When we look at the Trinitarian work of redemption, we make a distinction between its design and its accomplishment. Our redemption is designed and mandated by the Father (in conjunction with the other members of the Godhead), and the Father sends the Son into the world. This is why, throughout the Gospel of John, we repeatedly have heard Jesus say, both to His disciples and to His adversaries, that He came to do the will of the Father. The work of the Son of God was to accomplish the task of redemption that the Father intended.
