"I'm sorry," he says. "What? Why?" "You're fixing everything I set down." He nods at my hands, which are readjusting the elephant. "It wasn't polite of me to come in and start touching your things." "Oh, it's okay," I say quickly, letting go of the figurine. "You can touch anything of mine you want." He freezes. A funny look runs across his face before I realize what I've said. I didn't mean it like Not that would be so bad."

"I'm not leaving, Kitten. You're going to do this." My mouth opened as did the door behind us. Stomach dropping, I turned to see Mom standing there in all her fuzzy-bunny pajama glory. Oh, for the love of God."

One of the really bad things you can do to your writing is to dress up the vocabulary, looking for long words because you're maybe a little bit ashamed of your short ones. This is like dressing up a household pet in evening clothes. The pet is embarrassed and the person who committed this act of premeditated cuteness should be even more embarrassed.

"Ooh, big day in town for our park warden," I said. "They're even making you wear the uniform. Hayley's mom will be happy. She thinks you look hot in it." Dad turned as red as his hair. Mom's laugh floated out from her studio. "Maya Delaney. Leave your father alone."

"People are assholes, Mouse. You already know that." He paused as he scooped some of my hair back, gently tossing the strands over my shoulder. "And there's nothing to be embarrassed about." I glanced over at him. Everything about his steady gaze and the serious press of his lips screamed earnest. But he was wrong. "It is...embarrassing." "Not if you don't let it be." His leg brushed mine as he turned in his seat, facing me. Our eyes met. "You have the power over that. People can say crap. They can think whatever they want, but you control how you feel about it."

"Of course, in television's presentation of the "news of the day," we may see the Now...this" mode of discourse in it's boldest and most embarrassing form. For there, we are presented not only with fragmented news but news without context, without consequences, without value, and therefore without essential seriousness; that is to say, news as pure entertainment."

"I'll be honest," I said. "That's rather embarrassing. And also? So many remarks make much more sense now. I really need to be more aware of my surroundings." And then I walked into a large boulder. -- Sam"

There is nothing like you anywhere among all the stones in the sky, do you realize that? You are the wonder of the cosmos, possibly for embarrassing reasons, but anyway a wonder.
