Chapter 21
I Sa DRC 21:1  And David came to Nobe, to Achimelech, the priest and Achimelech was astonished at David's coming. And he said to him: Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
I Sa KJV 21:1  Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?
I Sa DRC 21:2  And David said to Achimelech, the priest: The king hath commanded me a business, and said: Let no man know the thing for which thou art sent by me, and what manner of commands I have given thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
I Sa KJV 21:2  And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business, and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.
I Sa VulgClem 21:2  Et ait David ad Achimelech sacerdotem : Rex præcepit mihi sermonem, et dixit : Nemo sciat rem propter quam missus es a me, et cujusmodi præcepta tibi dederim : nam et pueris condixi in illum et illum locum.
I Sa DRC 21:3  Now therefore if thou have any thing at hand, though it were but five loaves, give me, or whatsoever thou canst find.
I Sa KJV 21:3  Now therefore what is under thine hand? give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present.
I Sa DRC 21:4  And the priest answered David, saying: I have no common bread at hand, but only holy bread, if the young men be clean, especially from women?
I Sa KJV 21:4  And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.
I Sa VulgClem 21:4  Et respondens sacerdos ad David, ait illi : Non habeo laicos panes ad manum, sed tantum panem sanctum : si mundi sunt pueri, maxime a mulieribus ?
I Sa DRC 21:5  And David answered the priest, and said to him: Truly, as to what concerneth women, we have refrained ourselves from yesterday and the day before, when we came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy. Now this way is defiled, but it shall also be sanctified this day in the vessels.
I Sa KJV 21:5  And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
I Sa DRC 21:6  The priest therefore gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there, but only the loaves of proposition, which had been taken away from before the face of the Lord, that hot loaves might be set up.
I Sa KJV 21:6  So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the shewbread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.
I Sa VulgClem 21:6  Dedit ergo ei sacerdos sanctificatum panem : neque enim erat ibi panis, nisi tantum panes propositionis, qui sublati fuerant a facie Domini, ut ponerentur panes calidi.
I Sa DRC 21:7  Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, within the tabernacle of the Lord: and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of Saul's herdsmen.
I Sa KJV 21:7  Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the Lord; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the chiefest of the herdmen that belonged to Saul.
I Sa VulgClem 21:7  Erat autem ibi vir quidam de servis Saul in die illa, intus in tabernaculo Domini : et nomen ejus Doëg Idumæus, potentissimus pastorum Saul.
I Sa DRC 21:8  And David said to Achimelech: Hast thou here at hand a spear, or a sword? for I brought not my own sword, nor my own weapons with me, for the king's business required haste.
I Sa KJV 21:8  And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.
I Sa DRC 21:9  And the priest said: Lo, here is the sword of Goliath, the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Terebinth, wrapped up in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take this, take it, for here there is no other but this. And David said: There is none like that, give it me.
I Sa KJV 21:9  And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou slewest in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if thou wilt take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.
I Sa DRC 21:10  And David arose and fled that day from the face of Saul: and came to Achis, the king of Geth:
I Sa KJV 21:10  And David arose, and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.
I Sa VulgClem 21:10  Surrexit itaque David, et fugit in die illa a facie Saul : et venit ad Achis regem Geth.
I Sa DRC 21:11  And the servants of Achis, when they saw David, said to him: Is not this David, the king of the land? Did they not sing to him in their dances, saying: Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
I Sa KJV 21:11  And the servants of Achish said unto him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?
I Sa DRC 21:12  But David laid up these words in his heart, and was exceedingly afraid at the face of Achis, the king of Geth.
I Sa KJV 21:12  And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.
I Sa VulgClem 21:12  Posuit autem David sermones istos in corde suo, et extimuit valde a facie Achis regis Geth.
I Sa DRC 21:13  And he changed his countenance before them, and slipt down between their hands: and he stumbled against the doors of the gate, and his spittle ran down upon his beard.
I Sa KJV 21:13  And he changed his behaviour before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.
I Sa VulgClem 21:13  Et immutavit os suum coram eis, et collabebatur inter manus eorum : et impingebat in ostia portæ, defluebantque salivæ ejus in barbam.
I Sa DRC 21:14  And Achis said to his servants: You saw the man was mad: why have you brought him to me?
I Sa KJV 21:14  Then said Achish unto his servants, Lo, ye see the man is mad: wherefore then have ye brought him to me?
I Sa VulgClem 21:14  Et ait Achis ad servos suos : Vidistis hominem insanum : quare adduxistis eum ad me ?
I Sa DRC 21:15  Have we need of mad men, that you have brought in this fellow, to play the madman in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
I Sa KJV 21:15  Have I need of mad men, that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
I Sa VulgClem 21:15  an desunt nobis furiosi, quod introduxistis istum, ut fureret me præsente ? hiccine ingredietur domum meam ?
