2:1  I said in my heart: I will go, and abound with delights, and enjoy good things. And I saw that this also was vanity.

2:3  Usmyslel jsem si, že své tělo osvěžím vínem, ačkoli mé srdce tíhne k moudrosti, a že se chopím té pomatenosti, dokud nezjistím, co dobrého pod nebem mají lidští synové z toho, co konají ve vyměřených dnech svého života.

2:3  Rozhodl jsem se holdovat vínu a osvojit si ztřeštěnost, nadále se však v srdci řídit moudrostí, abych zjistil, v čem spočívá lidské štěstí v těch pár dnech života pod nebem.

2:3  Zkoumal jsem ve svém srdci, jak rozjařit své tělo vínem, zatímco mé srdce vede k moudrosti, abych se udržoval v pomatenosti, jen dokud nezjistím, co z toho, co vykonají pod nebem ve vyměřených dnech svých životů, je dobré pro lidské syny.

2:8  Nahromadil jsem si také stříbro a zlato a zabral i vlastnictví králů a krajin; opatřil jsem si zpěváky a zpěvačky i rozkoše synů lidských, milostnice.

2:8  Shromáždil jsem stříbra i zlata hromady, poklady králů, poklady mnoha krajin. Opatřil jsem si zpěváky a také zpěvačky, lidských rozkoší jsem užil s množstvím konkubín.

2:15  V srdci jsem si řekl: Co potkává hlupáka, potká i mne. Nač jsem tedy byl tak nadmíru moudrý? A v srdci jsem usoudil, že i to je pomíjivost.

2:15  Čeká-li mě i hlupáka týž osud, říkám si, nač je mi vůbec tolik moudrosti? A tak jsem usoudil, že i to je marnost.

2:15  Tu jsem si v duchu řekl: I mě postihne tentýž úděl jako toho hlupáka. Proč jsem potom já nadmíru zmoudřel? A v duchu jsem prohlásil, že také toto je marnost.

2:16  Nebo není památka moudrého jako i blázna na věky, proto že to, což nyní jest, ve dnech budoucích všecko v zapomenutí přichází, a že jakož umírá moudrý, tak i blázen.

2:18  Omrzelo mě všechno to pachtění, kterým se pachtím pod sluncem a které po mně zdědí můj následník.

2:18  Začal jsem nenávidět všechnu svou námahu, kterou se namáhám pod sluncem, protože ji zanechám člověku, jenž bude po mně.

2:19  Kdo ví, bude-li moudrý nebo pomatený, přesto se však zmocní všeho, čeho jsem se při své moudrosti pod sluncem klopotně dopachtil. Také to je pomíjivost.

2:19  Kdo ví, zda bude moudrý, anebo bláhový? Tak či tak získá vše, pro co jsem se lopotně pachtil a nač jsem vynaložil svou moudrost pod sluncem. I to je marnost.

2:21  Některý člověk se pachtí moudře, dovedně a prospěšně, ale musí svůj podíl předat člověku, který se s tím nepachtil. Také to je pomíjivost a prašpatná věc.

2:21  Někdo se pachtí moudře a zručně, svůj úspěch však odkáže tomu, kdo se s tím nepachtil. I to je marnost a hrozná věc.

2:24  Není pro člověka dobré jíst a pít a při svém pachtění se aspoň pomět? Shledal jsem, že i to je z Boží ruky.

2:24  Není pro člověka dobré, když bude jíst a pít a užije si ze své námahy blaho pro svou duši? I to jsem zjistil, že je z Boží ruky.

2:26  Svého oblíbence Bůh obdaří moudrostí, umem a radostí; hříšníku ale svěří úkol hromadit a kupit, co potom musí zanechat Božímu oblíbenci. I to je marnost a honba za větrem.
