9:1  At the first time the land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephtali was lightly touched: and at the last the way of the sea beyond the Jordan of the Galilee of the Gentiles was heavily loaded.

9:1  Primo tempore alleviata est terra Zabulon et terra Nephthali : et novissimo aggravata est via maris trans Jordanem Galilææ gentium.

9:1  Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

9:2  The people that walked in darkness, have seen a great light: to them that dwelt in the region of the shadow of death, light is risen.

9:3  Thou hast multiplied the nation, and hast not increased the joy. They shall rejoice before thee, as they that rejoice in the harvest, as conquerors rejoice after taking a prey, when they divide the spoils.

9:3  Multiplicasti gentem, et non magnificasti lætitiam. Lætabuntur coram te, sicut qui lætantur in messe ; sicut exsultant victores capta præda, quando dividunt spolia.

9:3  Thou hast multiplied the nation, and not increased the joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

9:4  For the yoke of their burden, and the rod of their shoulder, and the sceptre of their oppressor thou hast overcome, as in the day of Madian.

9:4  Jugum enim oneris ejus, et virgam humeri ejus, et sceptrum exactoris ejus superasti, sicut in die Madian.

9:5  For every violent taking of spoils, with tumult, and garment mingled with blood, shall be burnt, and be fuel for the fire.

9:5  For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.

9:6  For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and a son is given to us, and the government is upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, God the Mighty, the Father of the world to come, the Prince of Peace.

9:6  Parvulus enim natus est nobis, et filius datus est nobis, et factus est principatus super humerum ejus : et vocabitur nomen ejus, Admirabilis, Consiliarius, Deus, Fortis, Pater futuri sæculi, Princeps pacis.

9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

9:7  His empire shall be multiplied, and there shall be no end of peace: he shall sit upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom; to establish it and strengthen it with judgment and with justice, from henceforth and for ever: the zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

9:7  Multiplicabitur ejus imperium, et pacis non erit finis ; super solium David, et super regnum ejus sedebit, ut confirmet illud et corroboret in judicio et justitia, amodo et usque in sempiternum : zelus Domini exercituum faciet hoc.

9:7  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

9:8  The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

9:10  The bricks are fallen down, but we will build with square stones: they have cut down the sycamores, but we will change them for cedars.

9:11  And the Lord shall set up the enemies of Rasin over him, and shall bring on his enemies in a crowd:

9:11  Et elevabit Dominus hostes Rasin super eum, et inimicos ejus in tumultum vertet.

9:11  Therefore the Lord shall set up the adversaries of Rezin against him, and join his enemies together;

9:12  The Syrians from the east, and, the Philistines from the west: and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his indignation is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

9:12  Syriam ab oriente, et Philisthiim ab occidente ; et devorabunt Israël toto ore. In omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus, sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.

9:12  The Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

9:13  And the people are not returned to him who hath struck them, and have not sought after the Lord of hosts.

9:13  Et populus non est reversus ad percutientem se, et Dominum exercituum non inquisierunt.

9:13  For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the Lord of hosts.

9:14  And the Lord shall destroy out of Israel the head and the tail, him that bendeth down, and him that holdeth back, in one day.

9:14  Et disperdet Dominus ab Israël caput et caudam, incurvantem et refrenantem, die una.

9:14  Therefore the Lord will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day.

9:15  The aged and honourable, he is the head: and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

9:15  Longævus et honorabilis, ipse est caput ; et propheta docens mendacium, ipse est cauda.

9:15  The ancient and honourable, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

9:16  And they that call this people blessed, shall cause them to err: and they that are called blessed, shall be thrown down, headlong.

9:16  Et erunt qui beatificant populum istum, seducentes ; et qui beatificantur, præcipitati.

9:17  Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men: neither shall he have mercy on their fatherless, and widows: for every one is a hypocrite and wicked, and every mouth hath spoken folly. For all this his indignation is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

9:17  Propter hoc super adolescentulis ejus non lætabitur Dominus, et pupillorum ejus et viduarum non miserebitur : quia omnis hypocrita est et nequam, et universum os locutum est stultitiam ; in omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus, sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.

9:17  Therefore the Lord shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall have mercy on their fatherless and widows: for every one is an hypocrite and an evildoer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

9:18  For wickedness is kindled as a fire, it shall devour the brier and the thorn: and shall kindle in the thicket of the forest, and it shall be wrapped up in smoke ascending on high.

9:18  Succensa est enim quasi ignis impietas : veprem et spinam vorabit, et succendetur in densitate saltus, et convolvetur superbia fumi.

9:18  For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

9:19  By the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is troubled, and the people shall be as fuel for the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

9:19  In ira Domini exercituum conturbata est terra, et erit populus quasi esca ignis ; vir fratri suo non parcet.

9:19  Through the wrath of the Lord of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

9:20  And he shall turn to the right hand, and shall be hungry: and shall eat on the left hand, and shall not be filled: every one shall eat the flesh of his own arm: Manasses Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasses, and they together shall be against Juda.

9:20  Et declinabit ad dexteram, et esuriet ; et comedet ad sinistram, et non saturabitur ; unusquisque carnem brachii sui vorabit : Manasses Ephraim, et Ephraim Manassen ; simul ipsi contra Judam.

9:20  And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

9:21  After all these things his indignation is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

9:21  In omnibus his non est aversus furor ejus, sed adhuc manus ejus extenta.
