Chapter 4
Josh DRC 4:1  And when they were passed over, the Lord said to Joshua:
Josh KJV 4:1  And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over Jordan, that the Lord spake unto Joshua, saying,
Josh VulgClem 4:1  Quibus transgressis, dixit Dominus ad Josue :
Josh DRC 4:2  Choose twelve men, one of every tribe:
Josh KJV 4:2  Take you twelve men out of the people, out of every tribe a man,
Josh VulgClem 4:2  Elige duodecim viros singulos per singulas tribus :
Josh DRC 4:3  And command them to take out of the midst of the Jordan, where the feet of the priests stood, twelve very hard stones, which you shall set in the place of the camp, where you shall pitch your tents this night.
Josh KJV 4:3  And command ye them, saying, Take you hence out of the midst of Jordan, out of the place where the priests’ feet stood firm, twelve stones, and ye shall carry them over with you, and leave them in the lodging place, where ye shall lodge this night.
Josh VulgClem 4:3  et præcipe eis ut tollant de medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt pedes sacerdotum, duodecim durissimos lapides, quos ponetis in loco castrorum, ubi fixeritis hac nocte tentoria.
Josh DRC 4:4  And Joshua called twelve men, whom he had chosen out of the children of Israel, one out of every tribe,
Josh KJV 4:4  Then Joshua called the twelve men, whom he had prepared of the children of Israel, out of every tribe a man:
Josh VulgClem 4:4  Vocavitque Josue duodecim viros, quos elegerat de filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus,
Josh DRC 4:5  And he said to them: Go before the ark of the Lord your God to the midst of the Jordan, and carry from thence every man a stone on your shoulders, according to the number of the children of Israel,
Josh KJV 4:5  And Joshua said unto them, Pass over before the ark of the Lord your God into the midst of Jordan, and take ye up every man of you a stone upon his shoulder, according unto the number of the tribes of the children of Israel:
Josh VulgClem 4:5  et ait ad eos : Ite ante arcam Domini Dei vestri ad Jordanis medium, et portate inde singuli singulos lapides in humeris vestris, juxta numerum filiorum Israël,
Josh DRC 4:6  That it may be a sign among you: and when your children shall ask you tomorrow, saying: What means these stones?
Josh KJV 4:6  That this may be a sign among you, that when your children ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean ye by these stones?
Josh VulgClem 4:6  ut sit signum inter vos : et quando interrogaverint vos filii vestri cras, dicentes : Quid sibi volunt isti lapides ?
Josh DRC 4:7  You shall answer them: The waters of the Jordan ran off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord when it passed over the same: therefore were these stones set for a monument of the children of Israel forever.
Josh KJV 4:7  Then ye shall answer them, That the waters of Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it passed over Jordan, the waters of Jordan were cut off: and these stones shall be for a memorial unto the children of Israel for ever.
Josh VulgClem 4:7  respondebitis eis : Defecerunt aquæ Jordanis ante arcam fœderis Domini, cum transiret eum : idcirco positi sunt lapides isti in monimentum filiorum Israël usque in æternum.
Josh DRC 4:8  The children of Israel therefore did as Joshua commanded them, carrying out of the channel of the Jordan twelve stones, as the Lord had commanded him according to the number of the children of Israel unto the place wherein they camped, and there they set them.
Josh KJV 4:8  And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the Lord spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.
Josh VulgClem 4:8  Fecerunt ergo filii Israël sicut præcepit eis Josue, portantes de medio Jordanis alveo duodecim lapides, ut Dominus ei imperarat, juxta numerum filiorum Israël, usque ad locum in quo castrametati sunt, ibique posuerunt eos.
Josh DRC 4:9  And Joshua put other twelve stones in the midst of the channel of the Jordan, where the priests stood that carried the ark of the covenant: and they are there until this present day.
Josh KJV 4:9  And Joshua set up twelve stones in the midst of Jordan, in the place where the feet of the priests which bare the ark of the covenant stood: and they are there unto this day.
Josh VulgClem 4:9  Alios quoque duodecim lapides posuit Josue in medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt sacerdotes qui portabant arcam fœderis : et sunt ibi usque in præsentem diem.
Josh DRC 4:10  Now the priests that carried the ark, stood in the midst of the Jordan, till all things were accomplished, which the Lord had commanded Joshua to speak to the people, and Moses had said to him. And the people made haste, and passed over.
Josh KJV 4:10  For the priests which bare the ark stood in the midst of Jordan, until every thing was finished that the Lord commanded Joshua to speak unto the people, according to all that Moses commanded Joshua: and the people hasted and passed over.
Josh DRC 4:11  And when they had all passed over, the ark also of the Lord passed over, and the priests went before the people.
Josh KJV 4:11  And it came to pass, when all the people were clean passed over, that the ark of the Lord passed over, and the priests, in the presence of the people.
Josh VulgClem 4:11  Cumque transissent omnes, transivit et arca Domini, sacerdotesque pergebant ante populum.
Josh DRC 4:12  The children of Ruben also, and Gad, and half the tribe of Manasses, went armed before the children of Israel, as Moses had commanded them.
Josh KJV 4:12  And the children of Reuben, and the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh, passed over armed before the children of Israel, as Moses spake unto them:
Josh VulgClem 4:12  Filii quoque Ruben, et Gad, et dimidia tribus Manasse, armati præcedebant filios Israël, sicut eis præceperat Moyses :
Josh DRC 4:13  And forty thousand fighting men by their troops and bands, marched through the plains and fields of the city of Jericho.
Josh KJV 4:13  About forty thousand prepared for war passed over before the Lord unto battle, to the plains of Jericho.
Josh VulgClem 4:13  et quadraginta pugnatorum millia per turmas, et cuneos, incedebant per plana atque campestria urbis Jericho.
Josh DRC 4:14  In that day the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel, that they should fear him, as they had feared Moses, while he lived.
Josh KJV 4:14  On that day the Lord magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.
Josh VulgClem 4:14  In die illo magnificavit Dominus Josue coram omni Israël, ut timerent eum, sicut timuerant Moysen, dum adviveret.
Josh DRC 4:15  And he said to him:
Josh KJV 4:15  And the Lord spake unto Joshua, saying,
Josh VulgClem 4:15  Dixitque ad eum :
Josh DRC 4:16  Command the priests, that carry the ark of the covenant, to come up out of the Jordan.
Josh KJV 4:16  Command the priests that bear the ark of the testimony, that they come up out of Jordan.
Josh VulgClem 4:16  Præcipe sacerdotibus, qui portant arcam fœderis, ut ascendant de Jordane.
Josh DRC 4:17  And he commanded them, saying: Come ye up out of the Jordan.
Josh KJV 4:17  Joshua therefore commanded the priests, saying, Come ye up out of Jordan.
Josh VulgClem 4:17  Qui præcepit eis, dicens : Ascendite de Jordane.
Josh DRC 4:18  And when they that carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, were come up, and began to tread on the dry ground, the waters returned into their channel, and ran as they were wont before.
Josh KJV 4:18  And it came to pass, when the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord were come up out of the midst of Jordan, and the soles of the priests’ feet were lifted up unto the dry land, that the waters of Jordan returned unto their place, and flowed over all his banks, as they did before.
Josh VulgClem 4:18  Cumque ascendissent portantes arcam fœderis Domini, et siccam humum calcare cœpissent, reversæ sunt aquæ in alveum suum, et fluebant sicut ante consueverant.
Josh DRC 4:19  And the people came up out of the Jordan, the tenth day of the first month, and camped in Galgal, over against the east side of the city of Jericho.
Josh KJV 4:19  And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month, and encamped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho.
Josh VulgClem 4:19  Populus autem ascendit de Jordane decimo die mensis primi, et castrametati sunt in Galgalis contra orientalem plagam urbis Jericho.
Josh DRC 4:20  And the twelve stones, which they had taken out of the channel of the Jordan, Joshua pitched in Galgal,
Josh KJV 4:20  And those twelve stones, which they took out of Jordan, did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.
Josh VulgClem 4:20  Duodecim quoque lapides, quos de Jordanis alveo sumpserant, posuit Josue in Galgalis,
Josh DRC 4:21  And said to the children of Israel: When your children shall ask their fathers tomorrow, and shall say to them: What mean these stones?
Josh KJV 4:21  And he spake unto the children of Israel, saying, When your children shall ask their fathers in time to come, saying, What mean these stones?
Josh VulgClem 4:21  et dixit ad filios Israël : Quando interrogaverint filii vestri cras patres suos, et dixerint eis : Quid sibi volunt lapides isti ?
Josh DRC 4:22  You shall teach them, and say: Israel passed over this Jordan through the dry channel,
Josh KJV 4:22  Then ye shall let your children know, saying, Israel came over this Jordan on dry land.
Josh VulgClem 4:22  docebitis eos, atque dicetis : Per arentem alveum transivit Israël Jordanem istum,
Josh DRC 4:23  The Lord your God drying up the waters thereof in your sight, until you passed over:
Josh KJV 4:23  For the Lord your God dried up the waters of Jordan from before you, until ye were passed over, as the Lord your God did to the Red sea, which he dried up from before us, until we were gone over:
Josh VulgClem 4:23  siccante Domino Deo vestro aquas ejus in conspectu vestro, donec transiretis,
Josh DRC 4:24  As he had done before in the Red Sea, which he dried up till we passed through:
Josh KJV 4:24  That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the Lord, that it is mighty: that ye might fear the Lord your God for ever.
Josh VulgClem 4:24  sicut fecerat prius in mari Rubro, quod siccavit donec transiremus :
Josh DRC 4:25  That all the people of the earth may learn the most mighty hand of the Lord, that you also may fear the Lord your God for ever.
Josh KJV 4:25
Josh VulgClem 4:25  ut discant omnes terrarum populi fortissimam Domini manum, ut et vos timeatis Dominum Deum vestrum omni tempore.
