24:1  Behold the Lord shall lay waste the earth, and shall strip it, and shall afflict the face thereof, and scatter abroad the inhabitants thereof.

24:1  Ecce Dominus dissipabit terram : et nudabit eam, et affliget faciem ejus, et disperget habitatores ejus.

24:1  Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

24:2  And it shall be as with the people, so with the priest: and as with the servant so with his master: as with the handmaid, so with her mistress: as with the buyer, so with the seller: as with the lender, so with the borrower: as with him that calleth for his money, so with him that oweth.

24:2  Et erit sicut populus, sic sacerdos ; et sicut servus, sic dominus ejus ; sicut ancilla, sic domina ejus ; sicut emens, sic ille qui vendit ; sicut fœnerator, sic is qui mutuum accipit ; sicut qui repetit, sic qui debet.

24:2  And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.

24:3  With desolation shall the earth be laid waste, and it shall be utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.

24:3  Dissipatione dissipabitur terra, et direptione prædabitur ; Dominus enim locutus est verbum hoc.

24:3  The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the Lord hath spoken this word.

24:4  The earth mourned, and faded away, and is weakened: the world faded away, the height of the people of the earth is weakened.

24:4  Luxit, et defluxit terra, et infirmata est ; defluxit orbis, infirmata est altitudo populi terræ.

24:4  The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.

24:5  And the earth is infected by the inhabitants thereof: because they have transgressed the laws, they have changed the ordinance, they have broken the everlasting covenant.

24:5  Et terra infecta est ab habitatoribus suis, quia transgressi sunt leges, mutaverunt jus, dissipaverunt fœdus sempiternum.

24:5  The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.

24:6  Therefore shall a curse devour the earth, and the inhabitants thereof shall sin: and therefore they that dwell therein shall be mad, and few men shall be left.

24:6  Propter hoc maledictio vorabit terram, et peccabunt habitatores ejus ; ideoque insanient cultores ejus, et relinquentur homines pauci.

24:6  Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

24:7  The vintage hath mourned, the vine hath languished away, all the merry have sighed.

24:7  Luxit vindemia, infirmata est vitis, ingemuerunt omnes qui lætabantur corde ;

24:7  The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh.

24:8  The mirth of timbrels hath ceased, the noise of them that rejoice is ended, the melody of the harp is silent.

24:8  cessavit gaudium tympanorum, quievit sonitus lætantium, conticuit dulcedo citharæ.

24:8  The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.

24:9  They shall not drink wine with a song: the drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

24:9  Cum cantico non bibent vinum ; amara erit potio bibentibus illam.

24:10  The city of vanity is broken down, every house is shut up, no man cometh in.

24:11  There shall be a crying for wine in the streets: all mirth is forsaken: the joy of the earth is gone away.

24:11  Clamor erit super vino in plateis, deserta est omnia lætitia, translatum est gaudium terræ.

24:11  There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened, the mirth of the land is gone.

24:12  Desolation is left in the city, and calamity shall oppress the gates.

24:12  Relicta est in urbe solitudo, et calamitas opprimet portas.

24:12  In the city is left desolation, and the gate is smitten with destruction.

24:13  For it shall be thus in the midst of the earth, in the midst of the people, as if a few olives, that remain, should be shaken out of the olive tree: or grapes, when the vintage is ended.

24:13  Quia hæc erunt in medio terræ in medio populorum, quomodo si paucæ olivæ quæ remanserunt excutiantur ex olea et racemi, cum fuerit finita vindemia.

24:13  When thus it shall be in the midst of the land among the people, there shall be as the shaking of an olive tree, and as the gleaning grapes when the vintage is done.

24:14  These shall lift up their voice, and shall give praise: when the Lord shall be glorified, they shall make a joyful noise from the sea.

24:14  Hi levabunt vocem suam, atque laudabunt : cum glorificatus fuerit Dominus, hinnient de mari.

24:14  They shall lift up their voice, they shall sing for the majesty of the Lord, they shall cry aloud from the sea.

24:15  Therefore glorify ye the Lord in instruction: the name of the Lord God of Israel in the islands of the sea.

24:15  Propter hoc in doctrinis glorificate Dominum ; in insulis maris nomen Domini Dei Israël.

24:15  Wherefore glorify ye the Lord in the fires, even the name of the Lord God of Israel in the isles of the sea.

24:16  From the ends of the earth we have heard praises, the glory of the just one. And I said: My secret to myself, my secret to myself, woe is me: the prevaricators have prevaricated, and with the prevarication of transgressors they have prevaricated.

24:16  A finibus terræ laudes audivimus, gloriam Justi. Et dixi : Secretum meum mihi, secretum meum mihi. Væ mihi ! prævaricantes prævaricati sunt, et prævaricatione transgressorum prævaricati sunt.

24:16  From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

24:17  Fear, and the pit, and the snare are upon thee, O thou inhabitant of the earth.

24:17  Formido, et fovea, et laqueus super te, qui habitator es terræ.

24:18  And it shall come to pass, that he that shall flee from the noise of the fear, shall fall into the pit: and he that shall rid himself out of the pit, shall be taken in the snare: for the flood-gates from on high are opened, and the foundations of the earth shall be shaken.

24:18  Et erit : qui fugerit a voce formidinis cadet in foveam ; et qui se explicaverit de fovea tenebitur laqueo ; quia cataractæ de excelsis apertæ sunt et concutientur fundamenta terræ.

24:18  And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake.

24:19  With breaking shall the earth be broken, with crushing shall the earth be crushed, with trembling shall the earth be moved.

24:19  Confractione confringetur terra, contritione conteretur terra, commotione commovebitur terra ;

24:19  The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

24:20  With shaking shall the earth be shaken as a drunken man, and shall be removed as the tent of one night: and the iniquity thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

24:20  agitatione agitabitur terra sicut ebrius, et auferetur quasi tabernaculum unius noctis ; et gravabit eam iniquitas sua, et corruet, et non adjiciet ut resurgat.

24:20  The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

24:21  And it shall come to pass, that in that day the Lord shall visit upon the host of heaven on high, and upon the kings of the earth, on the earth.

24:21  Et erit : in die illa visitabit Dominus super militiam cæli in excelso, et super reges terræ qui sunt super terram ;

24:21  And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

24:22  And they shall be gathered together as in the gathering of one bundle into the pit, and they shall be shut up there in prison: and after many days they shall be visited.

24:22  et congregabuntur in congregatione unius fascis in lacum, et claudentur ibi in carcere, et post multos dies visitabuntur.

24:22  And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

24:23  And the moon shall blush, and the sun shall be ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Sion, and in Jerusalem, and shall be glorified in the sight of his ancients.

24:23  Et erubescet luna, et confundetur sol, cum regnaverit Dominus exercituum in monte Sion et in Jerusalem et in conspectu senum suorum fuerit glorificatus.

24:23  Then the moon shall be confounded, and the sun ashamed, when the Lord of hosts shall reign in mount Zion, and in Jerusalem, and before his ancients gloriously.
