Chapter 4
Roma DRC 4:1  What shall we say then that Abraham hath found, who is our father according to the flesh?
Roma VulgClem 4:1  Quid ergo dicemus invenisse Abraham patrem nostrum secundum carnem ?
Roma KJV 4:1  What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
Roma DRC 4:2  For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God.
Roma KJV 4:2  For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
Roma DRC 4:3  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God: and it was reputed to him unto justice.
Roma KJV 4:3  For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Roma DRC 4:4  Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned according to grace but according to debt.
Roma KJV 4:4  Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
Roma DRC 4:5  But to him that worketh not, yet believeth in him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reputed to justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.
Roma KJV 4:5  But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Roma DRC 4:6  As David also termeth the blessedness of a man to whom God reputeth justice without works:
Roma VulgClem 4:6  Sicut et David dicit beatitudinem hominis, cui Deus accepto fert justitiam sine operibus :
Roma KJV 4:6  Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Roma DRC 4:7  Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven: and whose sins are covered.
Roma KJV 4:7  Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Roma DRC 4:8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin.
Roma KJV 4:8  Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Roma DRC 4:9  This blessedness then, doth it remain in the circumcision only or in the uncircumcision also? For we say that unto Abraham faith was reputed to justice.
Roma VulgClem 4:9  Beatitudo ergo hæc in circumcisione tantum manet, an etiam in præputio ?
Roma KJV 4:9  Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
Roma DRC 4:10  How then was it reputed? When he was in circumcision or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Roma VulgClem 4:10  Quomodo ergo reputata est ? in circumcisione, an in præputio ? Non in circumcisione, sed in præputio.
Roma KJV 4:10  How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
Roma DRC 4:11  And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the justice of the faith which he had, being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, being uncircumcised: that unto them also it may be reputed to justice:
Roma KJV 4:11  And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
Roma DRC 4:12  And he might be the father of circumcision; not to them only that are of the circumcision, but to them also that follow the steps of the faith that is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
Roma KJV 4:12  And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
Roma DRC 4:13  For not through the law was the promise to Abraham or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world: but through the justice of faith.
Roma KJV 4:13  For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
Roma DRC 4:14  For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void: the promise is made of no effect.
Roma KJV 4:14  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
Roma DRC 4:15  For the law worketh wrath. For where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
Roma VulgClem 4:15  Lex enim iram operatur. Ubi enim non est lex, nec prævaricatio.
Roma KJV 4:15  Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Roma DRC 4:16  Therefore is it of faith, that according to grace the promise might be firm to all the seed: not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
Roma KJV 4:16  Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
Roma DRC 4:17  (As it is written: I have made thee a father of many nations), before God, whom he believed: who quickeneth the dead and calleth those things that are not, as those that are.
Roma KJV 4:17  (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
Roma DRC 4:18  Who against hope believed in hope; that he might be made the father of many nations, according to that which was said to him: So shall thy seed be.
Roma KJV 4:18  Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations; according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
Roma DRC 4:19  And he was not weak in faith. Neither did he consider his own body, now dead (whereas he was almost an hundred years old), nor the dead womb of Sara.
Roma KJV 4:19  And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
Roma DRC 4:20  In the promise also of God he staggered not by distrust: but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God:
Roma KJV 4:20  He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
Roma DRC 4:21  Most fully knowing that whatsoever he has promised, he is able also to perform.
Roma KJV 4:21  And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
Roma DRC 4:22  And therefore it was reputed to him unto justice.
Roma KJV 4:22  And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
Roma DRC 4:23  Now it is not written only for him. that it was reputed to him unto justice,
Roma KJV 4:23  Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
Roma DRC 4:24  But also for us, to whom it shall be reputed, if we believe in him that raised up Jesus Christ, our Lord, from the dead,
Roma KJV 4:24  But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
Roma DRC 4:25  Who was delivered up for our sins and rose again for our justification.
Roma KJV 4:25  Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
