LUKE
Chapter 16
Luke | Godbey | 16:1 | And He also spoke to His disciples, There was a certain rich man, who had a steward; and he was slandered to him as wasting his goods.
Luke | Godbey | 16:2 | And having called him, he said to him, What is this which I hear concerning thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou art not able to be steward any longer.
Luke | Godbey | 16:3 | And the steward said within himself, What shall I do, because my lord takes away my stewardship from me? I am not able to dig; I am ashamed to beg.
Luke | Godbey | 16:4 | I know what I shall do, in order that when I am deposed from the stewardship, they may receive me into their houses.
Luke | Godbey | 16:5 | And calling each one of the debtors of his lord, he said to the first, How much do you owe my lord?
Luke | Godbey | 16:6 | And he said; A hundred measures of oil. And he said to him, Take your accounts, and sitting down quickly write fifty.
Luke | Godbey | 16:7 | Then he said to another one, And how much do you owe? And he said, A hundred measures of wheat. He says to him, Take your account, and write fourscore.
Luke | Godbey | 16:8 | And the lord praised the steward of unrighteousness because he acted shrewdly: because the sons of this age are wiser in their generation than the sons of the light.
Luke | Godbey | 16:9 | And I say unto you, Make unto yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness, in order that, when it may fail, they may receive you into eternal tabernacles.
Luke | Godbey | 16:10 | He that is faithful in the least is also faithful in much: and he that is unrighteous in the least is unrighteous in much.
Luke | Godbey | 16:11 | If therefore you were not faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will intrust to you the true?
Luke | Godbey | 16:13 | No servant is able to serve two masters: for he will hate the one, and love the other; or he will cleave to the one, and despise the other. You are not able to serve God and mammon.
Luke | Godbey | 16:14 | And the Pharisees, being avaricious, were hearing all these things, and murmuring against Him.
Luke | Godbey | 16:15 | And He said to them, Ye are those who justify yourselves before the people; but God knows your hearts: because that which is exalted among the people is abomination in the sight of God.
Luke | Godbey | 16:16 | The law and the prophets were until John: from that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every one presses into it.
Luke | Godbey | 16:17 | And it is easier that heaven and earth pass away, than one tittle fall from the law.
Luke | Godbey | 16:18 | Every one sending away his wife, and marrying another, commits adultery; and the one marrying her who has been sent away by her husband commits adultery.
Luke | Godbey | 16:19 | There was a certain rich man, and he was habitually clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day.
Luke | Godbey | 16:21 | and desiring to be fed by the crumbs falling from the table of the rich man; but the dogs also coming continued to lick his sores.
Luke | Godbey | 16:22 | And it came to pass that the beggar died, and himself was carried by the angels into the bosom of Abraham: and the rich man also died, and was buried.
Luke | Godbey | 16:23 | And in Hades lifted up his eyes, being in torment, sees Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Luke | Godbey | 16:24 | And he calling said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, because I am tormented in this flame.
Luke | Godbey | 16:25 | But Abraham said, Child, remember that you received your good things in your life, and Lazarus likewise evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.
Luke | Godbey | 16:26 | And in addition to all these things, there is a great gulf fixed between us and you, in order that those wishing to go hence to you may not be able, neither can they come thence to us.
Luke | Godbey | 16:27 | And he said, Moreover I intreat you, father, that you may send him to the house of my father:
Luke | Godbey | 16:28 | for I have five brothers; in order that he may testify to them, that they may not also come to this place of the torment.
Luke | Godbey | 16:30 | But he said, No, father Abraham: but if one may go to them from the dead, they will repent.
