5:1  Call now, if there be any that will answer thee, and turn to some of the saints.

5:1  Voca ergo, si est qui tibi respondeat, et ad aliquem sanctorum convertere.

5:1  Call now, if there be any that will answer thee; and to which of the saints wilt thou turn?

5:2  Anger indeed killeth the foolish, and envy slayeth the little one.

5:2  Vere stultum interficit iracundia, et parvulum occidit invidia.

5:2  For wrath killeth the foolish man, and envy slayeth the silly one.

5:3  I have seen a fool with a strong root, and I cursed his beauty immediately.

5:3  Ego vidi stultum firma radice, et maledixi pulchritudini ejus statim.

5:3  I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation.

5:4  His children shall be far from safety, and shall be destroyed in the gate, and there shall be none to deliver them.

5:4  Longe fient filii ejus a salute, et conterentur in porta, et non erit qui eruat.

5:4  His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

5:5  Whose harvest the hungry shall eat, and the armed man shall take him by violence, and the thirsty shall drink up his riches.

5:5  Cujus messem famelicus comedet, et ipsum rapiet armatus, et bibent sitientes divitias ejus.

5:5  Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

5:6  Nothing upon earth is done without a cause, and sorrow doth not spring out of the ground.

5:6  Nihil in terra sine causa fit, et de humo non oritur dolor.

5:6  Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

5:7  Man is born to labour, and the bird to fly.

5:7  Homo nascitur ad laborem, et avis ad volatum.

5:8  Wherefore I will pray to the Lord, and address my speech to God:

5:8  Quam ob rem ego deprecabor Dominum, et ad Deum ponam eloquium meum :

5:8  I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

5:9  Who doth great things, and unsearchable and wonderful things without number:

5:9  qui facit magna et inscrutabilia, et mirabilia absque numero ;

5:9  Which doeth great things and unsearchable; marvellous things without number:

5:10  Who giveth rain upon the face of the earth, and watereth all things with waters:

5:10  qui dat pluviam super faciem terræ, et irrigat aquis universa ;

5:10  Who giveth rain upon the earth, and sendeth waters upon the fields:

5:11  Who setteth up the humble on high, and comforteth with health those that mourn.

5:11  qui ponit humiles in sublime, et mœrentes erigit sospitate ;

5:11  To set up on high those that be low; that those which mourn may be exalted to safety.

5:12  Who bringeth to nought the designs of the malignant, so that their hands cannot accomplish what they had begun:

5:12  qui dissipat cogitationes malignorum, ne possint implere manus eorum quod cœperant ;

5:12  He disappointeth the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise.

5:13  Who catcheth the wise in their craftiness, and disappointeth the counsel of the wicked:

5:13  qui apprehendit sapientes in astutia eorum, et consilium pravorum dissipat.

5:13  He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

5:14  They shall meet with darkness in the day, and grope at noonday as in the night.

5:14  Per diem incurrent tenebras, et quasi in nocte, sic palpabunt in meridie.

5:15  But he shall save the needy from the sword of their mouth, and the poor from the hand of the violent.

5:16  And to the needy there shall be hope, but iniquity shall draw in her mouth.

5:16  Et erit egeno spes ; iniquitas autem contrahet os suum.

5:16  So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

5:17  Blessed is the man whom God correcteth: refuse not, therefore, the chastising of the Lord.

5:17  Beatus homo qui corripitur a Deo : increpationem ergo Domini ne reprobes :

5:17  Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

5:18  For he woundeth, and cureth: he striketh, and his hands shall heal.

5:18  quia ipse vulnerat, et medetur ; percutit, et manus ejus sanabunt.

5:18  For he maketh sore, and bindeth up: he woundeth, and his hands make whole.

5:19  In six troubles he shall deliver thee, and in the seventh, evil shall not touch thee.

5:19  In sex tribulationibus liberabit te, et in septima non tanget te malum.

5:19  He shall deliver thee in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

5:20  In famine he shall deliver thee from death; and in battle, from the hand of the sword.

5:20  In fame eruet te de morte, et in bello de manu gladii.

5:21  Thou shalt be hidden from the scourge of the tongue: and thou shalt not fear calamity when it cometh.

5:21  A flagello linguæ absconderis, et non timebis calamitatem cum venerit.

5:21  Thou shalt be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shalt thou be afraid of destruction when it cometh.

5:22  In destruction and famine thou shalt laugh: and thou shalt not be afraid of the beasts of the earth.

5:22  In vastitate et fame ridebis, et bestias terræ non formidabis.

5:23  But thou shalt have a covenant with the stones of the lands, and the beasts of the earth shall be at peace with thee.

5:23  Sed cum lapidibus regionum pactum tuum, et bestiæ terræ pacificæ erunt tibi.

5:23  For thou shalt be in league with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with thee.

5:24  And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle is in peace, and visiting thy beauty, thou shalt not sin.

5:24  Et scies quod pacem habeat tabernaculum tuum ; et visitans speciem tuam, non peccabis.

5:24  And thou shalt know that thy tabernacle shall be in peace; and thou shalt visit thy habitation, and shalt not sin.

5:25  Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be multiplied, and thy offspring like the grass of the earth.

5:25  Scies quoque quoniam multiplex erit semen tuum, et progenies tua quasi herba terræ.

5:25  Thou shalt know also that thy seed shall be great, and thine offspring as the grass of the earth.

5:26  Thou shalt enter into the grave in abundance, as a heap of wheat is brought in its season.

5:26  Ingredieris in abundantia sepulchrum, sicut infertur acervus tritici in tempore suo.

5:26  Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age, like as a shock of corn cometh in in his season.

5:27  Behold, this is even so, as we have searched out: which thou having heard, consider it thoroughly in thy mind.

5:27  Ecce hoc, ut investigavimus, ita est : quod auditum, mente pertracta.

5:27  Lo this, we have searched it, so it is; hear it, and know thou it for thy good.
