JOSHUA
Chapter 8
Josh | DRC | 8:1 | And the Lord said to Joshua: Fear not, nor be thou dismayed: take with thee all the multitude of fighting men, arise, and go up to the town of Hai: Behold I have delivered into thy hand the king thereof, and the people, and the city, and the land.
Josh | KJV | 8:1 | And the Lord said unto Joshua, Fear not, neither be thou dismayed: take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai: see, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai, and his people, and his city, and his land:
Josh | VulgClem | 8:1 | Dixit autem Dominus ad Josue : Ne timeas, neque formides : tolle tecum omnem multitudinem pugnatorum, et consurgens ascende in oppidum Hai. Ecce tradidi in manu tua regem ejus et populum, urbemque et terram.
Josh | DRC | 8:2 | And thou shalt do to the city of Hai, and to the king thereof, as thou hast done to Jericho, and to the king thereof: but the spoils, and all the cattle, you shall take for a prey to yourselves: lay an ambush for the city behind it.
Josh | KJV | 8:2 | And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king: only the spoil thereof, and the cattle thereof, shall ye take for a prey unto yourselves: lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:2 | Faciesque urbi Hai, et regi ejus, sicut fecisti Jericho, et regi illius : prædam vero, et omnia animantia diripietis vobis : pone insidias urbi post eam.
Josh | DRC | 8:3 | And Joshua arose, and all the army of the fighting men with him, to go up against Hai: and he sent thirty thousand chosen valiant men in the night,
Josh | KJV | 8:3 | So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai: and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour, and sent them away by night.
Josh | DRC | 8:4 | And commanded them, saying: Lay an ambush behind the city: and go not very far from it: and be ye all ready.
Josh | KJV | 8:4 | And he commanded them, saying, Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city: go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready:
Josh | VulgClem | 8:4 | præcepitque eis, dicens : Ponite insidias post civitatem, nec longius recedatis : et eritis omnes parati.
Josh | DRC | 8:5 | But I, and the rest of the multitude which is with me, will approach on the contrary side against the city. And when they shall come out against us, we will flee, and turn our backs, as we did before:
Josh | KJV | 8:5 | And I, and all the people that are with me, will approach unto the city: and it shall come to pass, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them,
Josh | DRC | 8:6 | Till they pursuing us be drawn farther from the city: for they will think that we flee as before.
Josh | KJV | 8:6 | (For they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, They flee before us, as at the first: therefore we will flee before them.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:6 | donec persequentes ab urbe longius protrahantur : putabunt enim nos fugere sicut prius.
Josh | DRC | 8:7 | And whilst we are fleeing, and they pursuing, you shall rise out of the ambush, and shall destroy the city: and the Lord your God will deliver it into your hands.
Josh | KJV | 8:7 | Then ye shall rise up from the ambush, and seize upon the city: for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:7 | Nobis ergo fugientibus, et illis persequentibus, consurgetis de insidiis, et vastabitis civitatem : tradetque eam Dominus Deus vester in manus vestras.
Josh | DRC | 8:8 | And when you shall have taken it, set it on fire, and you shall do all things so as I have commanded.
Josh | KJV | 8:8 | And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire: according to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.
Josh | DRC | 8:9 | And he sent them away, and they went on to the place of the ambush, and abode between Bethel and Hai, on the west side of the city of Hai. But Joshua staid that night in the midst of the people,
Josh | KJV | 8:9 | Joshua therefore sent them forth: and they went to lie in ambush, and abode between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of Ai: but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
Josh | DRC | 8:10 | And rising early in the morning, he mustered his soldiers, and went up with the ancients in the front of the army, environed with the aid of the fighting men.
Josh | KJV | 8:10 | And Joshua rose up early in the morning, and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:10 | surgensque diluculo recensuit socios, et ascendit cum senioribus in fronte exercitus, vallatus auxilio pugnatorum.
Josh | DRC | 8:11 | And when they were come, and were gone up over against the city, they stood on the north side of the city, between which and them there was a valley in the midst.
Josh | KJV | 8:11 | And all the people, even the people of war that were with him, went up, and drew nigh, and came before the city, and pitched on the north side of Ai: now there was a valley between them and Ai.
Josh | DRC | 8:12 | And he had chosen five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Hai, on the west side of the same city:
Josh | KJV | 8:12 | And he took about five thousand men, and set them to lie in ambush between Beth–el and Ai, on the west side of the city.
Josh | DRC | 8:13 | But all the rest of the army went in battle array on the north side, so that the last of that multitude reached to the west side of the city. So Joshua went that night, and stood in the midst of the valley.
Josh | KJV | 8:13 | And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city, and their liers in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
Josh | DRC | 8:14 | And when the king of Hai saw this, he made haste in the morning, and went out with all the army of the city, and set it in battle array, toward the desert, not knowing that there lay an ambush behind his back.
Josh | KJV | 8:14 | And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hasted and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed, before the plain; but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behind the city.
Josh | DRC | 8:15 | But Joshua, and all Israel gave back, making as if they were afraid, and fleeing by the way of the wilderness.
Josh | KJV | 8:15 | And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
Josh | DRC | 8:16 | But they shouting together, and encouraging one another, pursued them. And when they were come from the city,
Josh | KJV | 8:16 | And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them: and they pursued after Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:16 | At illi vociferantes pariter, et se mutuo cohortantes, persecuti sunt eos. Cumque recessissent a civitate,
Josh | DRC | 8:17 | And not one remained in the city of Hai and of Bethel, that did not pursue after Israel, leaving the towns open as they had rushed out,
Josh | KJV | 8:17 | And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth–el, that went not out after Israel: and they left the city open, and pursued after Israel.
Josh | DRC | 8:18 | The Lord said to Joshua: Lift up the shield that is in thy hand, towards the city of Hai, for I will deliver it to thee.
Josh | KJV | 8:18 | And the Lord said unto Joshua, Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai; for I will give it into thine hand. And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
Josh | DRC | 8:19 | And when he had lifted up his shield towards the city, the ambush, that lay hid, rose up immediately: and going to the city, took it, and set it on fire.
Josh | KJV | 8:19 | And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hasted and set the city on fire.
Josh | DRC | 8:20 | And the men of the city, that pursued after Joshua, looking back, and seeing the smoke of the city rise up to heaven, had no more power to flee this way or that way: especially as they that had counterfeited flight, and were going toward the wilderness, turned back most valiantly against them that pursued.
Josh | KJV | 8:20 | And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and, behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
Josh | DRC | 8:21 | So Joshua, and all Israel, seeing that the city was taken, and that the smoke of the city rose up, returned, and slew the men of Hai.
Josh | KJV | 8:21 | And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and slew the men of Ai.
Josh | DRC | 8:22 | And they also that had taken and set the city on fire, issuing out of the city to meet their own men, began to cut off the enemies who were surrounded by them. So that the enemies being cut off on both sides, not one of so great a multitude was saved.
Josh | KJV | 8:22 | And the other issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side: and they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.
Josh | DRC | 8:23 | And they took the king of the city of Hai alive and brought him to Joshua.
Josh | KJV | 8:23 | And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Joshua.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:23 | regem quoque urbis Hai apprehenderunt viventem, et obtulerunt Josue.
Josh | DRC | 8:24 | So all being slain that had pursued after Israel, in his flight to the wilderness, and falling by the sword in the same place, the children of Israel returned and laid waste the city.
Josh | KJV | 8:24 | And it came to pass, when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chased them, and when they were all fallen on the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all the Israelites returned unto Ai, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:24 | Igitur omnibus interfectis, qui Israëlem ad deserta tendentem fuerant persecuti, et in eodem loco gladio corruentibus, reversi filii Israël percusserunt civitatem.
Josh | DRC | 8:25 | And the number of them that fell that day, both of men and women, was twelve thousand persons, all of the city of Hai.
Josh | KJV | 8:25 | And so it was, that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.
Josh | DRC | 8:26 | But Joshua drew not back his hand, which he had stretched out on high, holding the shield, till all the inhabitants of Hai were slain.
Josh | KJV | 8:26 | For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he stretched out the spear, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:26 | Josue vero non contraxit manum, quam in sublime porrexerat, tenens clypeum donec interficerentur omnes habitatores Hai.
Josh | DRC | 8:27 | And the children of Israel divided among them, the cattle and the prey of the city, as the Lord had commanded Joshua.
Josh | KJV | 8:27 | Only the cattle and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves, according unto the word of the Lord which he commanded Joshua.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:27 | Jumenta autem et prædam civitatis diviserunt sibi filii Israël, sicut præceperat Dominus Josue.
Josh | DRC | 8:28 | And he burnt the city, and made it a heap forever:
Josh | KJV | 8:28 | And Joshua burnt Ai, and made it an heap for ever, even a desolation unto this day.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:28 | Qui succendit urbem, et fecit eam tumulum sempiternum :
Josh | DRC | 8:29 | And he hung the king thereof on a gibbet, until the evening and the going down of the sun. Then Joshua commanded, and they took down his carcass from the gibbet: and threw it in the very entrance of the city, heaping upon it a great heap of stones, which remaineth until this present day.
Josh | KJV | 8:29 | And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until eventide: and as soon as the sun was down, Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree, and cast it at the entering of the gate of the city, and raise thereon a great heap of stones, that remaineth unto this day.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:29 | regem quoque ejus suspendit in patibulo usque ad vesperam et solis occasum. Præcepitque Josue, et deposuerunt cadaver ejus de cruce : projeceruntque in ipso introitu civitatis, congesto super eum magno acervo lapidum, qui permanet usque in præsentem diem.
Josh | DRC | 8:30 | Then Joshua built an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, in Mount Hebal,
Josh | KJV | 8:30 | Then Joshua built an altar unto the Lord God of Israel in mount Ebal,
Josh | VulgClem | 8:30 | Tunc ædificavit Josue altare Domino Deo Israël in monte Hebal,
Josh | DRC | 8:31 | As Moses, the servant of the Lord, had commanded the children of Israel, and it is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of unhewn stones, which iron had not touched: and he offered upon it holocausts to the Lord, and immolated victims of peace offerings.
Josh | KJV | 8:31 | As Moses the servant of the Lord commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of whole stones, over which no man hath lift up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt offerings unto the Lord, and sacrificed peace offerings.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:31 | sicut præceperat Moyses famulus Domini filiis Israël, et scriptum est in volumine legis Moysi : altare vero de lapidibus impolitis, quos ferrum non tetigit : et obtulit super eo holocausta Domino, immolavitque pacificas victimas.
Josh | DRC | 8:32 | And he wrote upon stones, the Deuteronomy of the law of Moses, which he had ordered before the children of Israel.
Josh | KJV | 8:32 | And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:32 | Et scripsit super lapides Deuteronomium legis Moysi, quod ille digesserat coram filiis Israël.
Josh | DRC | 8:33 | And all the people, and the ancients, and the princes, and judges, stood on both sides of the ark, before the priests that carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, both the stranger and he that was born among them, half of them by Mount Garizim, and half by Mount Hebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord, had commanded. And first he blessed the people of Israel.
Josh | KJV | 8:33 | And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.
Josh | DRC | 8:34 | After this, he read all the words of the blessing and the cursing, and all things that were written in the book of the law.
Josh | KJV | 8:34 | And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.
Josh | VulgClem | 8:34 | Post hæc legit omnia verba benedictionis et maledictionis, et cuncta quæ scripta erant in legis volumine.
Josh | DRC | 8:35 | He left out nothing of those things which Moses had commanded, but he repeated all before all the people of Israel, with the women and children, and strangers, that dwelt among them.
Josh | KJV | 8:35 | There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.
