41:1  O death, how bitter is the remembrance of thee to a man that hath peace in his possessions!

41:1  Ach, smrti, jak trpké je na tebe jen pomyslet, když člověk pokojně užívá svůj majetek, když má klid a ve všem se mu daří a ještě mu chutná jíst!

41:1  O mors, quam amara est memoria tua homini pacem habenti in substantiis suis :

41:2  To a man that is at rest, and whose ways are prosperous in all things, and that is yet able to take meat!

41:2  Ach, smrti, tvůj rozsudek je správný pro toho, kdo strádá a ubývá mu sil, kdo je přestárlý a plný starostí, kdo je popudlivý a ztratil naději.

41:2  viro quieto, et cujus viæ directæ sunt in omnibus, et adhuc valenti accipere cibum !

41:3  O death thy sentence is welcome to the man that is in need, and to him whose strength faileth:

41:3  Nestarej se, že musíš zemřít, pomysli na své předky i potomky.

41:3  O mors, bonum est judicium tuum homini indigenti, et qui minoratur viribus,

41:4  Who is in a decrepit age, and that is in care about all things, and to the distrustful that loseth patience!

41:4  Je to Hospodinův rozsudek nad vším živým – proč bys odmítal, co chce Nejvyšší? Ať jsi žil deset, sto, či tisíc let, v podsvětí ti to nikdo nevyčte.

41:4  defecto ætate, et cui de omnibus cura est, et incredibili, qui perdit patientiam !

41:5  Fear not the sentence of death. Remember what things have been before thee, and what shall come after thee: this sentence is from the Lord upon all flesh.

41:5  Děti hříšníků vyrostou v ohavné lidi, vždyť vyrůstají uprostřed bezbožných.

41:5  Noli metuere judicium mortis : memento quæ ante te fuerunt, et quæ superventura sunt tibi : hoc judicium a Domino omni carni.

41:6  And what shall come upon thee by the good pleasure of the most High? whether ten, or a hundred, or a thousand years.

41:6  Děti hříšníků přijdou o dědictví, jen hanba zůstane pro jejich potomky.

41:6  Et quid superveniet tibi in beneplacito Altissimi ? sive decem, sive centum, sive mille anni :

41:7  For among the dead there is no accusing of life.

41:7  Děti vyčtou svému bezbožnému otci, že kvůli němu musí snášet urážky.

41:7  non est enim in inferno accusatio vitæ.

41:8  The children of sinners become children of abominations, and they that converse near the houses of the ungodly.

41:8  Běda vám, bezbožní, že jste opustili Zákon Nejvyššího Boha!

41:8  Filii abominationum fiunt filii peccatorum, et qui conversantur secus domos impiorum.

41:9  The inheritance of the children of sinners shall perish, and with their posterity shall be a perpetual reproach.

41:9  Když jste se narodili, bylo to k prokletí, a když zemřete, kletba bude vaším dědictvím.

41:9  Filiorum peccatorum periet hæreditas, et cum semine illorum assiduitas opprobrii.

41:10  The children will complain of an ungodly father, because for his sake they are in reproach.

41:10  Vše, co vzešlo ze země, se do země navrátí; stejně tak bezbožní půjdou z kletby do záhuby.

41:10  De patre impio queruntur filii, quoniam propter illum sunt in opprobrio.

41:11  Woe to you, ungodly men, who have forsaken the law of the most high Lord.

41:11  Lidské tělo je pomíjivé, ale dobré jméno nikdy nezanikne.

41:11  Væ vobis, viri impii, qui dereliquistis legem Domini Altissimi !

41:12  And if you be born, you shall be born in malediction: and if you die, in malediction shall be your portion.

41:12  Starej se o své jméno, neboť ti zůstane déle než tisíc pokladů ve zlatě.

41:12  Et si nati fueritis, in maledictione nascemini : et si mortui fueritis, in maledictione erit pars vestra.

41:13  All things that are of the earth, shall return into the earth: so the ungodly shall from malediction to destruction.

41:13  Dny dobrého života jsou sečteny, ale dobré jméno trvá navěky.

41:13  Omnia quæ de terra sunt in terram convertentur : sic impii a maledicto in perditionem.

41:14  The mourning of men is about their body, but the name of the ungodly shall be blotted out.

41:14  Děti, držte se mých naučení a žijte v pokoji. K čemu je moudrost, která je skrytá, k čemu je zakopaný poklad?

41:14  Luctus hominum in corpore ipsorum : nomen autem impiorum delebitur.

41:15  Take care of a good name: for this shall continue with thee, more than a thousand treasures precious and great.

41:15  Lepší je ten, kdo skrývá hloupost, nežli ten, kdo skrývá moudrost.

41:15  Curam habe de bono nomine : hoc enim magis permanebit tibi quam mille thesauri pretiosi et magni.

41:16  A good life hath its number of days: but a good name shall continue for ever.

41:16  Nad mými slovy se proto zamyslete, ne vždy je totiž dobré se stydět a ne všechno se jistě líbí všem.

41:16  Bonæ vitæ numerus dierum : bonum autem nomen permanebit in ævum.

41:17  My children, keep discipline in peace: for wisdom that is hid, and a treasure that is not seen, what profit is there in them both?

41:17  Před otcem a matkou se styďte za smilstvo, před vládcem a velmožem za lež,

41:17  Disciplinam in pace conservate, filii : sapientia enim abscondita, et thesaurus invisus, quæ utilitas in utrisque ?

41:18  Better is the man that hideth his folly, than the man that hideth his wisdom.

41:18  před soudcem a hodnostářem za přestupek, před shromážděním lidu za špatnost,

41:18  Melior est homo qui abscondit stultitiam suam, quam homo qui abscondit sapientiam suam.

41:19  Wherefore have a shame of these things I am now going to speak of.

41:19  před společníkem a přítelem za křivdu a před sousedy za krádež.

41:19  Verumtamen reveremini in his quæ procedunt de ore meo :

41:20  For it is not good to keep all shamefacedness: and all things do not please all men in opinion.

41:20  Před Boží pravdou a smlouvou styď se, že se opíráš lokty při jídle,

41:20  non est enim bonum omnem reverentiam observare, et non omnia omnibus bene placent in fide.

41:21  Be ashamed of fornication before father and mother: and of a lie before a governor and a man in power:

41:21  že jsi nevrlý, když dáváš i dostáváš, že neodpovídáš na pozdrav,

41:21  Erubescite a patre et a matre de fornicatione : et a præsidente et a potente de mendacio :

41:22  Of an offence before a prince, and a judge: of iniquity before a congregation and a people:

41:22  že se díváš na lehkou ženu, že se od příbuzného odvracíš,

41:22  a principe et a judice de delicto : a synagoga et plebe de iniquitate :

41:23  Of injustice before a companion and friend: and in regard to the place where thou dwellest,

41:23  že si přivlastňuješ cizí podíl, že pokukuješ po něčí ženě,

41:23  a socio et amico de injustitia, et de loco in quo habitas :

41:24  Of theft, and of the truth of God, and the covenant: of leaning with thy elbow over meat, and of deceit in giving and taking:

41:24  že se pleteš kolem jeho otrokyně (jejímu lůžku se vyhýbej),

41:24  de furto, de veritate Dei, et testamento : de discubitu in panibus, et ab obfuscatione dati et accepti :

41:25  Of silence before them that salute thee: of looking upon a harlot: and of turning away thy face from thy kinsman.

41:25  že urážíš své přátele (když přidáváš k daru posměšek),

41:25  a salutantibus de silentio, a respectu mulieris fornicariæ, et ab aversione vultus cognati.

41:26  Turn not away thy face from thy neighbour, and of taking away a portion and not restoring.

41:26  že opakuješ, co jsi slyšel, a že prozrazuješ tajemství.

41:26  Ne avertas faciem a proximo tuo, et ab auferendo partem et non restituendo.

41:27  Gaze not upon another man's wife, and be not inquisitive after his handmaid, and approach not her bed.

41:27  Tehdy se budeš stydět oprávněně a všemi lidmi budeš oblíben.

41:27  Ne respicias mulierem alieni viri, et ne scruteris ancillam ejus, neque steteris ad lectum ejus.

41:28  Be ashamed of upbraiding speeches before friends: and after thou hast given, upbraid not.

41:28  Ab amicis de sermonibus improperii : et cum dederis, ne improperes.
