Chapter 48
Jere DRC 48:1  Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Woe to Nabo, for it is laid waste, and confounded: Cariathaim is taken: the strong city is confounded and hath trembled.
Jere VulgClem 48:1  Ad Moab.
Jere KJV 48:1  Against Moab thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel; Woe unto Nebo! for it is spoiled: Kiriathaim is confounded and taken: Misgab is confounded and dismayed.
Jere DRC 48:2  There is no more rejoicing in Moab over Hesebon: they have devised evil. Come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Therefore shalt thou in silence hold thy peace, and the sword shall follow thee.
Jere KJV 48:2  There shall be no more praise of Moab: in Heshbon they have devised evil against it; come, and let us cut it off from being a nation. Also thou shalt be cut down, O Madmen; the sword shall pursue thee.
Jere DRC 48:3  A voice of crying from Oronaim: waste, and great destruction.
Jere KJV 48:3  A voice of crying shall be from Horonaim, spoiling and great destruction.
Jere DRC 48:4  Moab is destroyed: proclaim a cry for her little ones.
Jere VulgClem 48:4  Contrita est Moab : annuntiate clamorem parvulis ejus.
Jere KJV 48:4  Moab is destroyed; her little ones have caused a cry to be heard.
Jere DRC 48:5  For by the ascent of Luith shall the mourner go up with weeping: for in the descent of Oronaim the enemies have heard a howling of destruction.
Jere VulgClem 48:5  Per ascensum enim Luith plorans ascendet in fletu, quoniam in descensu Oronaim hostes ululatum contritionis audierunt.
Jere KJV 48:5  For in the going up of Luhith continual weeping shall go up; for in the going down of Horonaim the enemies have heard a cry of destruction.
Jere DRC 48:6  Flee, save your lives: and be as heath in the wilderness.
Jere VulgClem 48:6  Fugite, salvate animas vestras, et eritis quasi myricæ in deserto :
Jere KJV 48:6  Flee, save your lives, and be like the heath in the wilderness.
Jere DRC 48:7  For because thou hast trusted in thy bulwarks, and in thy treasures, thou also shalt be taken: and Chamos shall go into captivity, his priests, and his princes together.
Jere KJV 48:7  For because thou hast trusted in thy works and in thy treasures, thou shalt also be taken: and Chemosh shall go forth into captivity with his priests and his princes together.
Jere DRC 48:8  And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: and the valleys shall perish, and the plains shall be destroyed, for the Lord hath spoken:
Jere VulgClem 48:8  Et veniet prædo ad omnem urbem, et urbs nulla salvabitur : et peribunt valles, et dissipabuntur campestria, quoniam dixit Dominus :
Jere KJV 48:8  And the spoiler shall come upon every city, and no city shall escape: the valley also shall perish, and the plain shall be destroyed, as the Lord hath spoken.
Jere DRC 48:9  Give a flower to Moab, for in its flower it shall go out: and the cities thereof shall be desolate, and uninhabited.
Jere VulgClem 48:9  Date florem Moab, quia florens egredietur : et civitates ejus desertæ erunt, et inhabitabiles.
Jere KJV 48:9  Give wings unto Moab, that it may flee and get away: for the cities thereof shall be desolate, without any to dwell therein.
Jere DRC 48:10  Cursed be he that doth the work of the Lord deceitfully: and cursed be he that withholdeth his sword from blood.
Jere KJV 48:10  Cursed be he that doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully, and cursed be he that keepeth back his sword from blood.
Jere DRC 48:11  Moab hath been fruitful from his youth, and hath rested upon his lees: and hath not been poured out from vessel to vessel, nor hath gone into captivity: therefore his taste hath remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
Jere KJV 48:11  Moab hath been at ease from his youth, and he hath settled on his lees, and hath not been emptied from vessel to vessel, neither hath he gone into captivity: therefore his taste remained in him, and his scent is not changed.
Jere DRC 48:12  Therefore behold the days come, saith the Lord, and I will send him men that shall order and overturn his bottles, and they shall cast him down, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles one against another.
Jere KJV 48:12  Therefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will send unto him wanderers, that shall cause him to wander, and shall empty his vessels, and break their bottles.
Jere DRC 48:13  And Moab shall be ashamed of Chamos, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, in which they trusted.
Jere VulgClem 48:13  Et confundetur Moab a Chamos sicut confusa est domus Israël a Bethel, in qua habebat fiduciam.
Jere KJV 48:13  And Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Beth–el their confidence.
Jere DRC 48:14  How do you say: We are valiant and stout men in battle?
Jere KJV 48:14  How say ye, We are mighty and strong men for the war?
Jere DRC 48:15  Moab is laid waste, and they have cast down her cities: and her choice young men are gone down to the slaughter: saith the king, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
Jere VulgClem 48:15  Vastata est Moab, et civitates illius succiderunt, et electi juvenes ejus descenderunt in occisionem, ait Rex : Dominus exercituum nomen ejus.
Jere KJV 48:15  Moab is spoiled, and gone up out of her cities, and his chosen young men are gone down to the slaughter, saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
Jere DRC 48:16  The destruction of Moab is near to come: the calamity thereof shall come on exceeding swiftly.
Jere KJV 48:16  The calamity of Moab is near to come, and his affliction hasteth fast.
Jere DRC 48:17  Comfort him, all you that are round about him, and all you that know his name, say: How is the strong staff broken, the beautiful rod?
Jere KJV 48:17  All ye that are about him, bemoan him; and all ye that know his name, say, How is the strong staff broken, and the beautiful rod!
Jere DRC 48:18  Come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst, O dwelling of the daughter of Dibon: because the spoiler of Moab is come up to thee, he hath destroyed thy bulwarks.
Jere VulgClem 48:18  Descende de gloria, et sede in siti, habitatio filiæ Dibon, quoniam vastator Moab ascendit ad te : dissipavit munitiones tuas.
Jere KJV 48:18  Thou daughter that dost inhabit Dibon, come down from thy glory, and sit in thirst; for the spoiler of Moab shall come upon thee, and he shall destroy thy strong holds.
Jere DRC 48:19  Stand in the way, and look out, O habitation of Aroer: inquire of him that fleeth: and say to him that hath escaped: What is done?
Jere KJV 48:19  O inhabitant of Aroer, stand by the way, and espy; ask him that fleeth, and her that escapeth, and say, What is done?
Jere DRC 48:20  Moab is confounded, because he is overthrown: howl ye, and cry, tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is wasted.
Jere VulgClem 48:20  Confusus est Moab, quoniam victus est. Ululate, et clamate : annuntiate in Arnon, quoniam vastata est Moab,
Jere KJV 48:20  Moab is confounded; for it is broken down: howl and cry; tell ye it in Arnon, that Moab is spoiled,
Jere DRC 48:21  And judgment is come upon the plain country: upon Helon, and upon Jasa, and upon Mephaath.
Jere KJV 48:21  And judgment is come upon the plain country; upon Holon, and upon Jahazah, and upon Mephaath,
Jere DRC 48:22  And upon Dibon, and upon Nabo, and upon the house of Deblathaim,
Jere VulgClem 48:22  et super Dibon, et super Nabo, et super domum Deblathaim,
Jere KJV 48:22  And upon Dibon, and upon Nebo, and upon Beth–diblathaim,
Jere DRC 48:23  And upon Cariathaim, and upon Bethgamul, and upon Bethmaon,
Jere VulgClem 48:23  et super Cariathaim, et super Bethgamul, et super Bethmaon,
Jere KJV 48:23  And upon Kiriathaim, and upon Beth–gamul, and upon Beth–meon,
Jere DRC 48:24  And upon Carioth, and upon Bosra: and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
Jere KJV 48:24  And upon Kerioth, and upon Bozrah, and upon all the cities of the land of Moab, far or near.
Jere DRC 48:25  The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the Lord.
Jere KJV 48:25  The horn of Moab is cut off, and his arm is broken, saith the Lord.
Jere DRC 48:26  Make him drunk, because he lifted up himself against the Lord: and Moab shall dash his hand in his own vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
Jere KJV 48:26  Make ye him drunken: for he magnified himself against the Lord: Moab also shall wallow in his vomit, and he also shall be in derision.
Jere DRC 48:27  For Israel hath been a derision unto them: as though thou hadst found him amongst thieves: for thy words therefore, which thou hast spoken against him, thou shalt be led away captive.
Jere VulgClem 48:27  Fuit enim in derisum tibi Israël : quasi inter fures reperisses eum : propter verba ergo tua quæ adversum illum locutus es, captivus duceris.
Jere KJV 48:27  For was not Israel a derision unto thee? was he found among thieves? for since thou spakest of him, thou skippedst for joy.
Jere DRC 48:28  Leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, you that dwell in Moab: and be ye like the dove that maketh her nest in the mouth of the hole in the highest place.
Jere VulgClem 48:28  Relinquite civitates, et habitate in petra, habitatores Moab : et estote quasi columba nidificans in summo ore foraminis.
Jere KJV 48:28  O ye that dwell in Moab, leave the cities, and dwell in the rock, and be like the dove that maketh her nest in the sides of the hole’s mouth.
Jere DRC 48:29  We have heard the pride of Moab, he is exceeding proud: his haughtiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the loftiness of his heart.
Jere KJV 48:29  We have heard the pride of Moab, (he is exceeding proud) his loftiness, and his arrogancy, and his pride, and the haughtiness of his heart.
Jere DRC 48:30  I know, saith the Lord, his boasting, and that the strength thereof is not according to it, neither hath it endeavoured to do according as it was able.
Jere KJV 48:30  I know his wrath, saith the Lord; but it shall not be so; his lies shall not so effect it.
Jere DRC 48:31  Therefore will I lament for Moab, and I will cry out to all Moab, for the men of the brick wall that mourn.
Jere KJV 48:31  Therefore will I howl for Moab, and I will cry out for all Moab; mine heart shall mourn for the men of Kir–heres.
Jere DRC 48:32  O vineyard of Sabama, I will weep for thee, with the mourning of Jazer: thy branches are gone over the sea, they are come even to the sea of Jazer: the robber hath rushed in upon thy harvest and thy vintage.
Jere VulgClem 48:32  de planctu Jazer plorabo tibi, vinea Sabama. Propagines tuæ transierunt mare ; usque ad mare Jazer pervenerunt : super messem tuam et vindemiam tuam prædo irruit.
Jere KJV 48:32  O vine of Sibmah, I will weep for thee with the weeping of Jazer: thy plants are gone over the sea, they reach even to the sea of Jazer: the spoiler is fallen upon thy summer fruits and upon thy vintage.
Jere DRC 48:33  Joy and gladness is taken away from Carmel, and from the land of Moab, and I have taken away the wine out of the presses: the treader of the grapes shall not sing the accustomed cheerful tune.
Jere KJV 48:33  And joy and gladness is taken from the plentiful field, and from the land of Moab; and I have caused wine to fail from the winepresses: none shall tread with shouting; their shouting shall be no shouting.
Jere DRC 48:34  From the cry of Hesebon even to Eleale, and to Jasa, they have uttered their voice: from Segor to Oronaim, as a heifer of three years old: the waters also of Nemrim shall be very bad.
Jere VulgClem 48:34  De clamore Hesebon usque Eleale et Jasa, dederunt vocem suam ; a Segor usque ad Oronaim, vitula conternante : aquæ quoque Nemrim pessimæ erunt.
Jere KJV 48:34  From the cry of Heshbon even unto Elealeh, and even unto Jahaz, have they uttered their voice, from Zoar even unto Horonaim, as an heifer of three years old: for the waters also of Nimrim shall be desolate.
Jere DRC 48:35  And I will take away from Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in the high places, and that sacrificeth to his gods.
Jere VulgClem 48:35  Et auferam de Moab, ait Dominus, offerentem in excelsis, et sacrificantem diis ejus.
Jere KJV 48:35  Moreover I will cause to cease in Moab, saith the Lord, him that offereth in the high places, and him that burneth incense to his gods.
Jere DRC 48:36  Therefore my heart shall sound for Moab like pipes and my heart shall sound like pipes for the men of the brick wall: because he hath done more than he could, therefore they have perished.
Jere VulgClem 48:36  Propterea cor meum ad Moab quasi tibiæ resonabit, et cor meum ad viros muri fictilis dabit sonitum tibiarum : quia plus fecit quam potuit, idcirco perierunt.
Jere KJV 48:36  Therefore mine heart shall sound for Moab like pipes, and mine heart shall sound like pipes for the men of Kir–heres: because the riches that he hath gotten are perished.
Jere DRC 48:37  For every head shall be bald, and every beard shall be shaven: all hands shall be tied together, and upon every back there shall be haircloth.
Jere KJV 48:37  For every head shall be bald, and every beard clipped: upon all the hands shall be cuttings, and upon the loins sackcloth.
Jere DRC 48:38  Upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof general mourning: because I have broken Moab as an useless vessel, saith the Lord.
Jere VulgClem 48:38  super omnia tecta Moab, et in plateis ejus, omnis planctus : quoniam contrivi Moab sicut vas inutile, ait Dominus.
Jere KJV 48:38  There shall be lamentation generally upon all the housetops of Moab, and in the streets thereof: for I have broken Moab like a vessel wherein is no pleasure, saith the Lord.
Jere DRC 48:39  How is it overthrown, and they have howled! How hath Moab bowed down the neck, and is confounded! And Moab shall be a derision, and an example to all round about him.
Jere VulgClem 48:39  Quomodo victa est, et ululaverunt ? quomodo dejecit cervicem Moab, et confusus est ? eritque Moab in derisum, et in exemplum omnibus in circuitu suo.
Jere KJV 48:39  They shall howl, saying, How is it broken down! how hath Moab turned the back with shame! so shall Moab be a derision and a dismaying to all them about him.
Jere DRC 48:40  Thus saith the Lord: Behold he shall fly as an eagle, and shall stretch forth his wings to Moab.
Jere VulgClem 48:40  Hæc dicit Dominus : Ecce quasi aquila volabit, et extendet alas suas ad Moab.
Jere KJV 48:40  For thus saith the Lord; Behold, he shall fly as an eagle, and shall spread his wings over Moab.
Jere DRC 48:41  Carioth is taken, and the strongholds are won: and the heart of the valiant men of Moab in that day shall be as the heart of a woman in labour.
Jere KJV 48:41  Kerioth is taken, and the strong holds are surprised, and the mighty men’s hearts in Moab at that day shall be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
Jere DRC 48:42  And Moab shall cease to be a people: because he hath gloried against the Lord.
Jere KJV 48:42  And Moab shall be destroyed from being a people, because he hath magnified himself against the Lord.
Jere DRC 48:43  Fear, and the pit, and the snare come upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.
Jere VulgClem 48:43  Pavor, et fovea, et laqueus super te, o habitator Moab, dicit Dominus.
Jere KJV 48:43  Fear, and the pit, and the snare, shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, saith the Lord.
Jere DRC 48:44  He that shall flee from the fear, shall fall into the pit: and he that shall get up out of the pit, shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon Moab the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
Jere KJV 48:44  He that fleeth from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that getteth up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for I will bring upon it, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, saith the Lord.
Jere DRC 48:45  They that fled from the snare stood in the shadow of Hesebon: but there came a fire out of Hesebon, and a flame out of the midst of Seon, and it shall devour part of Moab, and the crown of the head of the children of tumult.
Jere KJV 48:45  They that fled stood under the shadow of Heshbon because of the force: but a fire shall come forth out of Heshbon, and a flame from the midst of Sihon, and shall devour the corner of Moab, and the crown of the head of the tumultuous ones.
Jere DRC 48:46  Woe to thee, Moab, thou hast persisted, O people of Chamos: for thy sons, and thy daughters are taken captives.
Jere VulgClem 48:46  Væ tibi, Moab : periisti, popule Chamos, quia comprehensi sunt filii tui et filiæ tuæ in captivitatem.
Jere KJV 48:46  Woe be unto thee, O Moab! the people of Chemosh perisheth: for thy sons are taken captives, and thy daughters captives.
Jere DRC 48:47  And I will bring back the captivity of Moab in the last days, saith the Lord. Hitherto the judgments of Moab.
Jere VulgClem 48:47  Et convertam captivitatem Moab in novissimis diebus, ait Dominus. Hucusque judicia Moab.
Jere KJV 48:47  Yet will I bring again the captivity of Moab in the latter days, saith the Lord. Thus far is the judgment of Moab.
