6:1  Instead of a friend become not an enemy to thy neighbour: for an evil man shall inherit reproach and shame, so shall every sinner that is envious and double tongued.

6:1  Špatná pověst totiž působí ostudu a hanbu – to bude dědictví prolhaných hříšníků.

6:1  Noli fieri pro amico inimicus proximo : improperium enim et contumeliam malus hæreditabit : et omnis peccator invidus et bilinguis.

6:2  Extol not thyself in the thoughts of thy soul like a bull: lest thy strength be quashed by folly,

6:2  Nenech se unášet svými žádostmi, jinak tě rozsápají jako býk.

6:2  Non te extollas in cogitatione animæ tuæ velut taurus, ne forte elidatur virtus tua per stultitiam :

6:3  And it eat up thy leaves, and destroy thy fruit, and thou be left as a dry tree in the wilderness.

6:3  Přijdeš o své listí, ztratíš plody a zůstaneš jako suchý strom.

6:3  et folia tua comedat, et fructus tuos perdat, et relinquaris velut lignum aridum in eremo.

6:4  For a wicked soul shall destroy him that hath it, and maketh him to be a joy to his enemies, and shall lead him into the lot of the wicked.

6:4  Člověka zahubí jeho špatné sklony, jeho nepřátelé se mu vysmějí.

6:4  Anima enim nequam disperdet qui se habet, et in gaudium inimicis dat illum, et deducet in sortem impiorum.

6:5  A sweet word multiplieth friends, and appeaseth enemies, and a gracious tongue in a good man aboundeth.

6:5  Vlídná řeč ti přidá přátele, přívětivý jazyk vzbudí laskavost.

6:5  Verbum dulce multiplicat amicos et mitigat inimicos, et lingua eucharis in bono homine abundat.

6:6  Be in peace with many, but let one of a thousand be thy counsellor.

6:6  Mnoho ať je těch, kteří tě zdraví, tvým rádcem ať je však jen jeden z tisíce.

6:6  Multi pacifici sint tibi : et consiliarius sit tibi unus de mille.

6:7  If thou wouldst get a friend, try him before thou takest him, and do not credit him easily.

6:7  Hledáš-li přítele, podrob ho zkoušce, důvěřovat mu nespěchej.

6:7  Si possides amicum, in tentatione posside eum, et ne facile credas ei.

6:8  For there is a friend for his own occasion, and he will not abide in the day of thy trouble.

6:8  Někdo je přítelem, jen když se mu to hodí, v den tvého soužení tě však opustí.

6:8  Est enim amicus secundum tempus suum, et non permanebit in die tribulationis.

6:9  And there is a friend that turneth to enmity; and there is a friend that will disclose hatred and strife and reproaches.

6:9  Některý přítel se změní v nepřítele, prozradí váš spor, a tak tě zahanbí.

6:9  Et est amicus qui convertitur ad inimicitiam, et est amicus qui odium et rixam et convitia denudabit.

6:10  And there is a friend a companion at the table, and he will not abide in the day of distress.

6:10  Některý přítel s tebou sedá u stolu, v den tvého soužení tě však opustí.

6:10  Est autem amicus socius mensæ, et non permanebit in die necessitatis.

6:11  A friend if he continue steadfast, shall be to thee as thyself, and shall act with confidence among them of thy household.

6:11  Když se ti vede dobře, je s tebou jako stín, i tvé služebníky vyplísní.

6:11  Amicus si permanserit fixus, erit tibi quasi coæqualis, et in domesticis tuis fiducialiter aget.

6:12  If he humble himself before thee, and hide himself from thy face, thou shalt have unanimous friendship for good.

6:12  Když ale klesneš, obrátí se proti tobě, ani potkat tě chtít nebude.

6:12  Si humiliaverit se contra te, et a facie tua absconderit se, unanimem habebis amicitiam bonam.

6:13  Separate thyself from thy enemies, and take heed of thy friends.

6:13  Nepřátelům se vyhýbej a dávej si pozor i na přátele.

6:13  Ab inimicis tuis separare, et ab amicis tuis attende.

6:14  A faithful friend is a strong defence: and he that hath found him, hath found a treasure.

6:14  Věrný přítel je pevná záštita, kdo ho najde, našel poklad.

6:14  Amicus fidelis protectio fortis : qui autem invenit illum, invenit thesaurum.

6:15  Nothing can be compared to a faithful friend, and no weight of gold and silver is able to countervail the goodness of his fidelity.

6:15  Věrný přítel je k nezaplacení, jeho cenu nevyváží nic.

6:15  Amico fideli nulla est comparatio, et non est digna ponderatio auri et argenti contra bonitatem fidei illius.

6:16  A faithful friend is the medicine of life and immortality: and they that fear the Lord, shall find him.

6:16  Věrný přítel je elixír života – naleznou ho ti, kdo Hospodina ctí.

6:16  Amicus fidelis medicamentum vitæ et immortalitatis : et qui metuunt Dominum, invenient illum.

6:17  He that feareth God, shall likewise have good friendship: because according to him shall his friend be.

6:17  Ten, kdo ctí Hospodina, bude mít dobré přátele, bude si jich hledět jako sám sebe.

6:17  Qui timet Deum æque habebit amicitiam bonam, quoniam secundum illum erit amicus illius.

6:18  My son, from thy youth up receive instruction, and even to thy grey hairs thou shalt find wisdom.

6:18  Přijímej, chlapče, vzdělání už od mládí, a až do stáří budeš nacházet moudrost.

6:18  Fili, a juventute tua excipe doctrinam, et usque ad canos invenies sapientiam.

6:19  Come to her as one that plougheth, and soweth, and wait for her good fruits:

6:19  Přistupuj k ní jak oráč a rozsévač, čekej na její dobré plody. Při jejím pěstování se jen trochu přičiníš a brzy okusíš její úrody.

6:19  Quasi is qui arat et seminat accede ad eam, et sustine bonos fructus illius.

6:20  For in working about her thou shalt labour a little, and shalt quickly eat of her fruits.

6:20  Pro tupce je ale neúrodná, zabedněnec u ní nevytrvá.

6:20  In opere enim ipsius exiguum laborabis, et cito edes de generationibus illius.

6:21  How very unpleasant is wisdom to the unlearned, and the unwise will not continue with her.

6:21  Bude pro něj tvrdá jak prubířský kámen, a tak ji zanedlouho odvrhne.

6:21  Quam aspera est nimium sapientia indoctis hominibus ! et non permanebit in illa excors.

6:22  She shall be to them as a mighty stone of trial, and they will cast her from them before it be long.

6:22  Moudrost totiž ke cti svého jména je přístupná jen nemnohým.

6:22  Quasi lapidis virtus probatio erit in illis : et non demorabuntur projicere illam.

6:23  For the wisdom of doctrine is according to her name, and she is not manifest unto many, but with them to whom she is known, she continueth even to the sight of God.

6:23  Poslechni, chlapče, a přijmi mou radu, neodmítej mé poučení:

6:23  Sapientia enim doctrinæ secundum nomen est ejus, et non est multis manifestata : quibus autem cognita est, permanet usque ad conspectum Dei.

6:24  Give ear, my son, and take wise counsel, and cast not away my advice.

6:24  Strč své nohy do jejích okovů, svůj krk do jejího obojku.

6:24  Audi, fili, et accipe consilium intellectus, et ne abjicias consilium meum.

6:25  Put thy feet into her fetters, and thy neck into her chains:

6:25  Skloň se a nes ji na svých ramenou, jejím poutům se nezpěčuj.

6:25  Injice pedem tuum in compedes illius, et in torques illius collum tuum.

6:26  Bow down thy shoulder, and bear her, and be not grieved with her bands.

6:26  Vykroč k ní z celé duše své, ze všech sil se drž jejích cest.

6:26  Subjice humerum tuum, et porta illam, et ne acedieris vinculis ejus.

6:27  Come to her with all thy mind, and keep her ways with all thy power.

6:27  Sleduj a hledej ji, a dá se ti poznat; až se jí zmocníš, už ji nepouštěj.

6:27  In omni animo tuo accede ad illam, et in omni virtute tua conserva vias ejus.

6:28  Search for her, and she shall be made known to thee, and when thou hast gotten her, let her not go:

6:28  Nakonec v ní najdeš odpočinutí, ona se stane tvou radostí.

6:28  Investiga illam, et manifestabitur tibi : et continens factus, ne derelinquas eam :

6:29  For in the latter end thou shalt find rest in her, and she shall be turned to thy joy.

6:29  Její okovy ti budou mocnou záštitou a její obojek slavnostním rouchem.

6:29  in novissimis enim invenies requiem in ea, et convertetur tibi in oblectationem.

6:30  Then shall her fetters be a strong defence for thee, and a firm foundation, and her chain a robe of glory:

6:30  Její jho bude zlatou ozdobou a její pouta purpurovou šňůrou.

6:30  Et erunt tibi compedes ejus in protectionem fortitudinis et bases virtutis, et torques illius in stolam gloriæ :

6:31  For in her is the beauty of life, and her bands are a healthful binding.

6:31  Oblečeš si ji jako slavnostní roucho a nasadíš si jako nádhernou korunu.

6:31  decor enim vitæ est in illa, et vincula illius alligatura salutaris.

6:32  Thou shalt put her on as a robe of glory, and thou shalt set her upon thee as a crown of joy.

6:32  Budeš-li chtít, chlapče, dá ti vzdělání, oddáš-li se jí, budeš rozvážný.

6:32  Stolam gloriæ indues eam, et coronam gratulationis superpones tibi.

6:33  My son, if thou wilt attend to me, thou shalt learn: and if thou wilt apply thy mind, thou shalt be wise.

6:33  Budeš-li rád naslouchat, pochopíš, budeš-li dávat pozor, dojdeš moudrosti.

6:33  Fili, si attenderis mihi, disces : et si accommodaveris animum tuum, sapiens eris.

6:34  If thou wilt incline thy ear, thou shalt receive instruction: and if thou love to hear, thou shalt be wise.

6:34  Vyhledávej společnost starších, a kdo je moudrý, k tomu se připoj.

6:34  Si inclinaveris aurem tuam, excipies doctrinam : et si dilexeris audire, sapiens eris.

6:35  Stand in the multitude of ancients that are wise, and join thyself from thy heart to their wisdom, that thou mayst hear every discourse of God, and the sayings of praise may not escape thee.

6:35  Pilně poslouchej každý zbožný výklad, ať ti neuniknou hluboké výroky!

6:35  In multitudine presbyterorum prudentium sta, et sapientiæ illorum ex corde conjungere, ut omnem narrationem Dei possis audire, et proverbia laudis non effugiant a te.

6:36  And if thou see a man of understanding, go to him early in the morning, and let thy foot wear the steps of his doors.

6:36  Uvidíš-li rozumného, choď za ním hned zrána, tvé nohy ať ošlapají jeho práh!

6:36  Et si videris sensatum, evigila ad eum, et gradus ostiorum illius exterat pes tuus.

6:37  Let thy thoughts be upon the precepts of God, and meditate continually on his commandments: and he will give thee a heart, and the desire of wisdom shall be given to thee.

6:37  Uvažuj o Hospodinových zákonech, o jeho přikázáních stále přemítej. On sám pak posílí tvé srdce a touhou po moudrosti budeš obdařen.

6:37  Cogitatum tuum habe in præceptis Dei, et in mandatis illius maxime assiduus esto : et ipse dabit tibi cor, et concupiscentia sapientiæ dabitur tibi.
