4:1  The sons of Juda: Phares, Hesron, and Charmi and Hur, and Sobal.

4:1  The sons of Judah; Pharez, Hezron, and Carmi, and Hur, and Shobal.

4:1  Filii Juda : Phares, Hesron, et Charmi, et Hur, et Sobal.

4:2  And Raia the son of Sobal begot Jahath, of whom were born Ahumai, and Laad. These are the families of Sarathi.

4:2  And Reaiah the son of Shobal begat Jahath; and Jahath begat Ahumai, and Lahad. These are the families of the Zorathites.

4:2  Raia vero filius Sobal genuit Jahath, de quo nati sunt Ahumai, et Laad : hæ cognationes Sarathi.

4:3  And this is the posterity of Etam: Jezrahel, and Jesema, And Jedebos: and the name of their sister was Asalelphuni.

4:3  And these were of the father of Etam; Jezreel, and Ishma, and Idbash: and the name of their sister was Hazelelponi:

4:3  Ista quoque stirps Etam : Jezrahel, et Jesema, et Jedebos. Nomen quoque sororis eorum, Asalelphuni.

4:4  And Phanuel the father of Gedor, and Ezar the father of Hosa, these are the sons of Hur the firstborn of Ephratha the father of Bethlehem.

4:4  And Penuel the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephratah, the father of Beth–lehem.

4:4  Phanuel autem pater Gedor, et Ezer pater Hosa : isti sunt filii Hur primogeniti Ephratha patris Bethlehem.

4:5  And Assur the father of Thecua had two wives, Halaa and Naara:

4:5  And Ashur the father of Tekoa had two wives, Helah and Naarah.

4:5  Assur vero patri Thecuæ erant duæ uxores, Halaa et Naara.

4:6  And Naara bore him Ozam, and Hepher, and Themani, and Ahasthari: these are the sons of Naara.

4:6  And Naarah bare him Ahuzam, and Hepher, and Temeni, and Haahashtari. These were the sons of Naarah.

4:6  Peperit autem ei Naara, Oozam, et Hepher, et Themani, et Ahasthari : isti sunt filii Naara.

4:7  And the sons of Halaa, Sereth, Isaar, and Ethnan.

4:7  And the sons of Helah were, Zereth, and Jezoar, and Ethnan.

4:7  Porro filii Halaa, Sereth, Isaar et Ethnan.

4:8  And Cos begot Anob, and Soboba, and the kindred of Aharehel the son of Arum.

4:8  And Coz begat Anub, and Zobebah, and the families of Aharhel the son of Harum.

4:8  Cos autem genuit Anob, et Soboba, et cognationem Aharehel filii Arum.

4:9  And Jabes was more honourable than any of his brethren, and his mother called his name Jabes, saying: Because I bore him with sorrow.

4:9  And Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bare him with sorrow.

4:9  Fuit autem Jabes inclytus præ fratribus suis, et mater ejus vocavit nomen illius Jabes, dicens : Quia peperi eum in dolore.

4:10  And Jabes called upon the God of Israel, saying: If blessing thou wilt bless me, and wilt enlarge my borders, and thy hand be with me, and thou save me from being oppressed by evil. And God granted him the things he prayed for.

4:10  And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

4:10  Invocavit vero Jabes Deum Israël, dicens : Si benedicens benedixeris mihi, et dilataveris terminos meos, et fuerit manus tua mecum, et feceris me a malitia non opprimi. Et præstitit Deus quæ precatus est.

4:11  And Caleb the brother of Sua begot Mahir, who was the father of Esthon.

4:11  And Chelub the brother of Shuah begat Mehir, which was the father of Eshton.

4:11  Caleb autem frater Sua genuit Mahir, qui fuit pater Esthon.

4:12  And Esthon begot Bethrapha, and Phesse, and Tehinna father of the city of Naas: these are the men of Recha.

4:12  And Eshton begat Beth–rapha, and Paseah, and Tehinnah the father of Ir–nahash. These are the men of Rechah.

4:12  Porro Esthon genuit Bethrapha, et Phesse, et Tehinna patrem urbis Naas : hi sunt viri Recha.

4:13  And the sons of Cenez were Othoniel, and Saraia. And the sons of Othoniel, Hathath, and Maonathi.

4:13  And the sons of Kenaz; Othniel, and Seraiah: and the sons of Othniel; Hathath.

4:13  Filii autem Cenez, Othoniel, et Saraia. Porro filii Othoniel, Hathath, et Maonathi.

4:14  Maonathi begot Ophra, and Saraia begot Joab the father of the Valley of artificers: for artificers were there.

4:14  And Meonothai begat Ophrah: and Seraiah begat Joab, the father of the valley of Charashim; for they were craftsmen.

4:14  Maonathi genuit Ophra, Saraia autem genuit Joab patrem Vallis artificum : ibi quippe artifices erant.

4:15  And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephone, were Hir, and Ela, and Naham. And the sons of Ela: Cenez.

4:15  And the sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh; Iru, Elah, and Naam: and the sons of Elah, even Kenaz.

4:15  Filii vero Caleb filii Jephone, Hir, et Ela, et Naham. Filii quoque Ela : Cenez.

4:16  The sons also of Jaleleel: Ziph, and Zipha, Thiria and Asrael.

4:16  And the sons of Jehaleleel; Ziph, and Ziphah, Tiria, and Asareel.

4:16  Filii quoque Jaleleel : Ziph, et Zipha, Thiria, et Asraël.

4:17  And the sons of Esra, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon, and he begot Mariam, and Sammai, and Jesba the father of Esthamo.

4:17  And the sons of Ezra were, Jether, and Mered, and Epher, and Jalon: and she bare Miriam, and Shammai, and Ishbah the father of Eshtemoa.

4:17  Et filii Ezra, Jether, et Mered, et Epher, et Jalon, genuitque Mariam, et Sammai, et Jesba patrem Esthamo.

4:18  And his wife Judaia, bore Jared the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Icuthiel the father of Zanoe. And these are the sons of Bethia the daughter of Pharao, whom Mered took to wife.

4:18  And his wife Jehudijah bare Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Socho, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, which Mered took.

4:18  Uxor quoque ejus Judaia, peperit Jared patrem Gedor, et Heber patrem Socho, et Icuthiel patrem Zanoë : hi autem filii Bethiæ filiæ Pharaonis, quam accepit Mered.

4:19  And the sons of his wife Odaia the sister of Naham the father of Celia, Garmi, and Esthamo, who was of Machathi.

4:19  And the sons of his wife Hodiah the sister of Naham, the father of Keilah the Garmite, and Eshtemoa the Maachathite.

4:19  Et filii uxoris Odaiæ sororis Naham patris Ceila, Garmi, et Esthamo, qui fuit de Machathi.

4:20  The sons also of Simon, Amnon, and Rinna the son of Hanan, and Thilon. And the sons of Jesi Zoheth, and Benzoheth.

4:20  And the sons of Shimon were, Amnon, and Rinnah, Ben–hanan, and Tilon. And the sons of Ishi were, Zoheth, and Ben–zoheth.

4:20  Filii quoque Simon, Amnon, et Rinna filius Hanan, et Thilon. Et filii Jesi, Zoheth, et Benzoheth.

4:21  The sons of Sela the son of Juda: Her the father of Lecha, and Laada the father of Maresa, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen in the House of oath.

4:21  The sons of Shelah the son of Judah were, Er the father of Lecah, and Laadah the father of Mareshah, and the families of the house of them that wrought fine linen, of the house of Ashbea,

4:21  Filii Sela, filii Juda : Her pater Lecha, et Laada pater Maresa, et cognationes domus operantium byssum in domo juramenti.

4:22  And he that made the sun to stand, and the men of Lying, and Secure, and Burning, who were princes in Moab, and who returned into Lahem. Now these are things of old.

4:22  And Jokim, and the men of Chozeba, and Joash, and Saraph, who had the dominion in Moab, and Jashubi–lehem. And these are ancient things.

4:22  Et qui stare fecit solem, virique Mendacii, et Securus, et Incendens, qui principes fuerunt in Moab, et qui reversi sunt in Lahem : hæc autem verba vetera.

4:23  These are the potters, and they dwelt in Plantations, and Hedges, with the king for his works, and they abode there.

4:24  The sons of Simeon: Namuel and Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul:

4:24  The sons of Simeon were, Nemuel, and Jamin, Jarib, Zerah, and Shaul:

4:24  Filii Simeon : Namuel et Jamin, Jarib, Zara, Saul.

4:25  Sellum his son, Mapsam his son, Masma his son.

4:25  Shallum his son, Mibsam his son, Mishma his son.

4:25  Sellum filius ejus, Mapsam filius ejus, Masma filius ejus.

4:26  The sons of Masma: Hamuel his son, Zachur his son, Semei his son.

4:26  And the sons of Mishma; Hamuel his son, Zacchur his son, Shimei his son.

4:26  Filii Masma : Hamuel filius ejus, Zachur filius ejus, Semei filius ejus.

4:27  The sons of Semei were sixteen, and six daughters: but his brethren had not many sons, and the whole kindred could not reach to the sum of the children of Juda.

4:27  And Shimei had sixteen sons and six daughters; but his brethren had not many children, neither did all their family multiply, like to the children of Judah.

4:27  Filii Semei sedecim, et filiæ sex : fratres autem ejus non habuerunt filios multos, et universa cognatio non potuit adæquare summam filiorum Juda.

4:28  And they dwelt in Bersabee, and Molada, and Hasarsuhal,

4:29  And in Bala, and in Asom, and in Tholad,

4:30  And in Bathuel, and in Horma, and in Siceleg,

4:31  And in Bethmarchaboth, and in Hasarsusim, and in Bethberai, and in Saarim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

4:31  And at Beth–marcaboth, and Hazar–susim, and at Beth–birei, and at Shaaraim. These were their cities unto the reign of David.

4:32  Their towns also were Etam, and Aen, Remmon, and Thochen, and Asan, five cities.

4:32  And their villages were, Etam, and Ain, Rimmon, and Tochen, and Ashan, five cities:

4:32  Villæ quoque eorum : Etam, et Aën, Remmon, et Thochen, et Asan, civitates quinque.

4:33  And all their villages round about these cities as far as Baal. This was their habitation, and the distribution of their dwellings.

4:33  And all their villages that were round about the same cities, unto Baal. These were their habitations, and their genealogy.

4:33  Et universi viculi eorum per circuitum civitatum istarum usque ad Baal : hæc est habitatio eorum, et sedium distributio.

4:34  And Mosabab and Jemlech, and Josaphat, the son of Amasias,

4:34  And Meshobab, and Jamlech, and Joshah the son of Amaziah,

4:34  Mosobab quoque et Jemlech, et Josa filius Amasiæ,

4:35  And Joel, and Jehu the son of Josabia the son of Saraia, the son of Asiel,

4:35  And Joel, and Jehu the son of Josibiah, the son of Seraiah, the son of Asiel,

4:35  et Joël, et Jehu filius Josabiæ filii Saraiæ filii Asiel,

4:36  And Elioenai, and Jacoba, and Isuhaia, and Asaia, and Adiel, and Ismiel, and Banaia,

4:36  And Elioenai, and Jaakobah, and Jeshohaiah, and Asaiah, and Adiel, and Jesimiel, and Benaiah,

4:36  et Elioënai, et Jacoba, et Isuhaia, et Asaia, et Adiel, et Ismiel, et Banaia,

4:37  Ziza also the son of Sephei the son of Allon the son of Idaia the son of Semri the son of Samaia.

4:37  And Ziza the son of Shiphi, the son of Allon, the son of Jedaiah, the son of Shimri, the son of Shemaiah;

4:37  Ziza quoque filius Sephei filii Allon filii Idaia filii Semri filii Samaia.

4:38  These were named princes in their kindreds, and in the houses of their families were multiplied exceedingly.

4:38  These mentioned by their names were princes in their families: and the house of their fathers increased greatly.

4:38  Isti sunt nominati principes in cognationibus suis, et in domo affinitatum suarum multiplicati sunt vehementer.

4:39  And they went forth to enter into Gador as far as to the east side of the valley, to seek pastures for their flocks.

4:39  And they went to the entrance of Gedor, even unto the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks.

4:40  And they found fat pastures, and very good, and a country spacious, and quiet, and fruitful, in which some of the race of Cham had dwelt before.

4:41  And these whose names are written above, came in the days of Ezechias king of Juda: and they beat down their tents, and slew the inhabitants that were found there, and utterly destroyed them unto this day: and they dwelt in their place, because they found there fat pastures.

4:41  And these written by name came in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and smote their tents, and the habitations that were found there, and destroyed them utterly unto this day, and dwelt in their rooms: because there was pasture there for their flocks.

4:41  Hi ergo venerunt, quos supra descripsimus nominatim, in diebus Ezechiæ regis Juda : et percusserunt tabernacula eorum, et habitatores qui inventi fuerant ibi, et deleverunt eos usque in præsentem diem : habitaveruntque pro eis, quoniam uberrimas pascuas ibidem repererunt.

4:42  Some also of the children of Simeon, five hundred men, went into mount Seir, having for their captains Phaltias and Naaria and Raphaia and Oziel the sons of Jesi:

4:42  And some of them, even of the sons of Simeon, five hundred men, went to mount Seir, having for their captains Pelatiah, and Neariah, and Rephaiah, and Uzziel, the sons of Ishi.

4:42  De filiis quoque Simeon abierunt in montem Seir viri quingenti, habentes principes Phalthiam et Naariam et Raphaiam et Oziel filios Jesi :

4:43  And they slew the remnant of the Amalecites, who had been able to escape, and they dwelt there in their stead unto this day.

4:43  And they smote the rest of the Amalekites that were escaped, and dwelt there unto this day.

4:43  et percusserunt reliquias, quæ evadere potuerant, Amalecitarum, et habitaverunt ibi pro eis usque ad diem hanc.
