JUDGES
Chapter 20
Judg | DRC | 20:1 | Then all the children of Israel went out, and gathered together as one man, from Dan to Bersabee, with the land of Galaad, to the Lord in Maspha:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:1 | Egressi itaque sunt omnes filii Israël, et pariter congregati, quasi vir unus, de Dan usque Bersabee, et terra Galaad, ad Dominum in Maspha.
Judg | KJV | 20:1 | Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer–sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.
Judg | DRC | 20:2 | And all the chiefs of the people, and all the tribes of Israel, met together in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen fit for war.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:2 | Omnesque anguli populorum, et cunctæ tribus Israël in ecclesiam populi Dei convenerunt, quadringenta millia peditum pugnatorum.
Judg | KJV | 20:2 | And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.
Judg | DRC | 20:3 | (Nor were the children of Benjamin ignorant that the children of Israel were come up to Maspha.) And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was killed being asked, how so great a wickedness had been committed,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:3 | (Nec latuit filios Benjamin quod ascendissent filii Israël in Maspha.) Interrogatusque Levita, maritus mulieris interfectæ, quomodo tantum scelus perpetratum esset,
Judg | KJV | 20:3 | (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
Judg | DRC | 20:4 | Answered: I came into Gabaa, of Benjamin, with my wife, and there I lodged:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:4 | respondit : Veni in Gabaa Benjamin cum uxore mea, illucque diverti :
Judg | KJV | 20:4 | And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.
Judg | DRC | 20:5 | And behold the men of that city, in the night beset the house wherein I was, intending to kill me, and abused my wife with an incredible fury of lust, so that at last she died.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:5 | et ecce homines civitatis illius circumdederunt nocte domum in qua manebam, volentes me occidere, et uxorem meam incredibili furore libidinis vexantes, denique mortua est.
Judg | KJV | 20:5 | And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
Judg | DRC | 20:6 | And I took her and cut her in pieces, and sent the parts into all the borders of your possession: because there never was so heinous a crime, and so great an abomination committed in Israel.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:6 | Quam arreptam, in frustra concidi, misique partes in omnes terminos possessionis vestræ : quia numquam tantum nefas, et tam grande piaculum, factum est in Israël.
Judg | KJV | 20:6 | And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
Judg | DRC | 20:7 | You are all here, O children of Israel, determine what you ought to do.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:7 | Adestis, omnes filii Israël : decernite quid facere debeatis.
Judg | KJV | 20:7 | Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.
Judg | DRC | 20:8 | And all the people standing, answered as by the voice of one man: We will not return to our tents, neither shall any one of us go into his own house:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:8 | Stansque omnis populus, quasi unius hominis sermone respondit : Non recedemus in tabernacula nostra, nec suam quisquam intrabit domum :
Judg | KJV | 20:8 | And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
Judg | DRC | 20:9 | But this we will do in common against Gabaa:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:9 | sed hoc contra Gabaa in commune faciamus.
Judg | KJV | 20:9 | But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
Judg | DRC | 20:10 | We will take ten men of a hundred out of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to bring victuals for the army, that we may fight against Gabaa of Benjamin, and render to it for its wickedness, what it deserveth.
Judg | KJV | 20:10 | And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
Judg | DRC | 20:11 | And all Israel were gathered together against the city, as one man, with one mind, and one counsel:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:11 | Convenitque universus Israël ad civitatem, quasi homo unus eadem mente, unoque consilio.
Judg | KJV | 20:11 | So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
Judg | DRC | 20:12 | And they sent messengers to all the tribe of Benjamin, to say to them: Why hath so great an abomination been found among you?
Judg | KJV | 20:12 | And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
Judg | DRC | 20:13 | Deliver up the men of Gabaa, that have committed this heinous crime, that they may die, and the evil may be taken away out of Israel. But they would not hearken to the proposition of their brethren the children of Israel:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:13 | Tradite homines de Gabaa, qui hoc flagitium perpetrarunt, ut moriantur, et auferatur malum de Israël. Qui noluerunt fratrum suorum filiorum Israël audire mandatum :
Judg | KJV | 20:13 | Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Judg | DRC | 20:14 | But out of all the cities which were of their lot, they gathered themselves together into Gabaa, to aid them, and to fight against the whole people of Israel.
Judg | KJV | 20:14 | But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
Judg | DRC | 20:15 | And there were found of Benjamin five and twenty thousand men that drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gabaa,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:15 | Inventique sunt viginti quinque millia de Benjamin educentium gladium, præter habitatores Gabaa,
Judg | KJV | 20:15 | And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
Judg | DRC | 20:16 | Who were seven hundred most valiant men, fighting with the left hand as well as with the right: and slinging stones so sure that they could hit even a hair, and not miss by the stone's going on either side.
Judg | KJV | 20:16 | Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Judg | DRC | 20:17 | Of the men of Israel also, beside the children of Benjamin, were found four hundred thousand that drew swords and were prepared to fight.
Judg | KJV | 20:17 | And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
Judg | DRC | 20:18 | And they arose and came to the house of God, that is, to Silo: and they consulted God, and said: Who shall be in our army the first to go to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord answered them: Let Juda be your leader.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:18 | Qui surgentes venerunt in domum Dei, hoc est, in Silo : consulueruntque Deum, atque dixerunt : Quis erit in exercitu nostro princeps certaminis contra filios Benjamin ? Quibus respondit Dominus : Judas sit dux vester.
Judg | KJV | 20:18 | And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.
Judg | DRC | 20:19 | And forthwith the children of Israel rising in the morning, camped by Gabaa:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:19 | Statimque filii Israël surgentes mane, castrametati sunt juxta Gabaa :
Judg | KJV | 20:19 | And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
Judg | DRC | 20:20 | And going out from thence to fight against Benjamin, began to assault the city.
Judg | KJV | 20:20 | And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.
Judg | DRC | 20:21 | And the children of Benjamin coming out of Gabaa slew of the children of Israel that day two and twenty thousand men.
Judg | KJV | 20:21 | And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
Judg | DRC | 20:22 | Again Israel, trusting in their strength and their number, set their army in array in the same place, where they had fought before:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:22 | Rursum filii Israël et fortitudine et numero confidentes, in eodem loco in quo prius certaverant, aciem direxerunt :
Judg | KJV | 20:22 | And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.
Judg | DRC | 20:23 | Yet so that they first went up and wept before the Lord until night: and consulted him and said: Shall I go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin my brethren or not? And he answered them: Go up against them, and join battle.
Judg | KJV | 20:23 | (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)
Judg | DRC | 20:24 | And when the children of Israel went out the next day to fight against the children of Benjamin,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:24 | Cumque filii Israël altera die contra filios Benjamin ad prælium processissent,
Judg | KJV | 20:24 | And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
Judg | DRC | 20:25 | The children of Benjamin sallied forth out of the gates of Gabaa: and meeting them, made so great a slaughter of them, as to kill eighteen thousand men that drew the sword.
Judg | KJV | 20:25 | And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
Judg | DRC | 20:26 | Wherefore all the children of Israel came to the house of God, and sat and wept before the Lord: and they fasted that day till the evening, and offered to him holocausts, and victims of peace offerings,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:26 | Quam ob rem omnes filii Israël venerunt in domum Dei, et sedentes flebant coram Domino : jejunaveruntque die illo usque ad vesperam, et obtulerunt ei holocausta, atque pacificas victimas,
Judg | KJV | 20:26 | Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
Judg | DRC | 20:27 | And inquired of him concerning their state. At that time the ark of the covenant of the Lord was there,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:27 | et super statu suo interrogaverunt. Eo tempore ibi erat arca fœderis Dei,
Judg | KJV | 20:27 | And the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
Judg | DRC | 20:28 | And Phinees, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, was over the house. So they consulted the Lord, and said: Shall we go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin, our brethren, or shall we cease? And the Lord said to them: Go up, for to morrow I will deliver them into your hands.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:28 | et Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron præpositus domus. Consuluerunt igitur Dominum, atque dixerunt : Exire ultra debemus ad pugnam contra filios Benjamin fratres nostros, an quiescere ? Quibus ait Dominus : Ascendite : cras enim tradam eos in manus vestras.
Judg | KJV | 20:28 | And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
Judg | DRC | 20:29 | And the children of Israel set ambushes round about the city of Gabaa:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:29 | Posueruntque filii Israël insidias per circuitum urbis Gabaa :
Judg | KJV | 20:29 | And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
Judg | DRC | 20:30 | And they drew up their army against Benjamin the third time, as they had done the first and second.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:30 | et tertia vice, sicut semel et bis, contra Benjamin exercitum produxerunt.
Judg | KJV | 20:30 | And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
Judg | DRC | 20:31 | And the children of Benjamin boldly issued out of the city, and seeing their enemies flee, pursued them a long way, so as to wound and kill some of them, as they had done the first and second day, whilst they fled by two highways, whereof one goeth up to Bethel and the other to Gabaa, and they slew about thirty men:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:31 | Sed et filii Benjamin audacter eruperunt de civitate, et fugientes adversarios longius persecuti sunt, ita ut vulnerarent ex eis sicut primo die et secundo, et cæderent per duas semitas vertentes terga, quarum una ferebatur in Bethel et altera in Gabaa, atque prosternerent triginta circiter viros :
Judg | KJV | 20:31 | And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
Judg | DRC | 20:32 | For they thought to cut them off as they did before. But they artfully feigning a flight, designed to draw them away from the city, and by their seeming to flee, to bring them to the highways aforesaid.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:32 | putaverunt enim solito eos more cedere.
Judg | KJV | 20:32 | And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.
Judg | DRC | 20:33 | Then all the children of Israel rising up out of the places where they were, set their army in battle array, in the place which is called Baalthamar. The ambushes also, which were about the city, began by little and little to come forth,
Judg | VulgClem | 20:33 | Omnes itaque filii Israël surgentes de sedibus suis, tetenderunt aciem in loco qui vocatur Baalthamar. Insidiæ quoque, quæ circa urbem erant, paulatim se aperire cœperunt,
Judg | KJV | 20:33 | And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal–tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
Judg | DRC | 20:34 | And to march from the west side of the city. And other ten thousand men chosen out of all Israel, attacked the inhabitants of the city. And the battle grew hot against the children of Benjamin: and they understood not that present death threatened them on every side.
Judg | KJV | 20:34 | And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Judg | DRC | 20:35 | And the Lord defeated them before the children of Israel, and they slew of them in that day five and twenty thousand, and one hundred, all fighting men, and that drew the sword.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:35 | Percussitque eos Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, et interfecerunt ex eis in illo die viginti quinque millia, et centum viros, omnes bellatores et educentes gladium.
Judg | KJV | 20:35 | And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
Judg | DRC | 20:36 | But the children of Benjamin, when they saw themselves to be too weak, began to flee. Which the children of Israel seeing, gave them place to flee, that they might come to the ambushes that were prepared, which they had set near the city.
Judg | KJV | 20:36 | So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
Judg | DRC | 20:37 | And they that were in ambush arose on a sudden out of their coverts, and whilst Benjamin turned their backs to the slayers, went into the city, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
Judg | KJV | 20:37 | And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
Judg | DRC | 20:38 | Now the children of Israel had given a sign to them, whom they had laid in ambushes, that after they had taken the city, they should make a fire: that by the smoke rising on high, they might shew that the city was taken.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:38 | Signum autem dederant filii Israël his quos in insidiis collocaverant, ut postquam urbem cepissent, ignem accenderent : ut ascendente in altum fumo, captam urbem demonstrarent.
Judg | KJV | 20:38 | Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
Judg | DRC | 20:39 | And when the children of Israel saw this in the battle, (for the children of Benjamin thought they fled, and pursued them vigorously, killing thirty men of their army)
Judg | KJV | 20:39 | And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
Judg | DRC | 20:40 | And perceived, as it were, a pillar of smoke rise up from the city; and Benjamin looking back, saw that the city was taken, and that the flames ascended on high:
Judg | VulgClem | 20:40 | et viderent quasi columnam fumi de civitate conscendere : Benjamin quoque aspiciens retro, cum captam cerneret civitatem, et flammas in sublime ferri :
Judg | KJV | 20:40 | But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
Judg | DRC | 20:41 | They that before had made as if they fled, turning their faces, stood bravely against them. Which the children of Benjamin seeing, turned their backs,
Judg | KJV | 20:41 | And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
Judg | DRC | 20:42 | And began to go towards the way of the desert, the enemy pursuing them thither also. And they that fired the city came also out to meet them.
Judg | KJV | 20:42 | Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
Judg | DRC | 20:43 | And so it was, that they were slain on both sides by the enemies, and there was no rest of their men dying. They fell and were beaten down on the east side of the city of Gabaa.
Judg | KJV | 20:43 | Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
Judg | DRC | 20:44 | And they that were slain in the same place, were eighteen thousand men, all most valiant soldiers.
Judg | KJV | 20:44 | And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
Judg | DRC | 20:45 | And when they that remained of Benjamin saw this, they fled into the wilderness, and made towards the rock that is called Remmon. In that flight also, as they were straggling, and going different ways; they slew of them five thousand men. And as they went farther, they still pursued them, and slew also other two thousand.
Judg | KJV | 20:45 | And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
Judg | DRC | 20:46 | And so it came to pass, that all that were slain of Benjamin, in divers places, were five and twenty thousand fighting men, most valiant for war.
Judg | KJV | 20:46 | So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
Judg | DRC | 20:47 | And there remained of all the number of Benjamin only six hundred men that were able to escape, and flee to the wilderness: and they abode in the rock Remmon four months.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:47 | Remanserunt itaque de omni numero Benjamin, qui evadere et fugere in solitudinem potuerunt, sexcenti viri : sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quatuor.
Judg | KJV | 20:47 | But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
Judg | DRC | 20:48 | But the children of Israel returning, put all the remains of the city to the sword, both men and beasts, and all the cities and villages of Benjamin were consumed with devouring flames.
Judg | VulgClem | 20:48 | Regressi autem filii Israël, omnes reliquias civitatis a viris usque ad jumenta gladio percusserunt, cunctasque urbes et viculos Benjamin vorax flamma consumpsit.
Judg | KJV | 20:48 | And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
