Chapter 20
Judg DRC 20:1  Then all the children of Israel went out, and gathered together as one man, from Dan to Bersabee, with the land of Galaad, to the Lord in Maspha:
Judg KJV 20:1  Then all the children of Israel went out, and the congregation was gathered together as one man, from Dan even to Beer–sheba, with the land of Gilead, unto the Lord in Mizpeh.
Judg DRC 20:2  And all the chiefs of the people, and all the tribes of Israel, met together in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen fit for war.
Judg KJV 20:2  And the chief of all the people, even of all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand footmen that drew sword.
Judg VulgClem 20:2  Omnesque anguli populorum, et cunctæ tribus Israël in ecclesiam populi Dei convenerunt, quadringenta millia peditum pugnatorum.
Judg DRC 20:3  (Nor were the children of Benjamin ignorant that the children of Israel were come up to Maspha.) And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was killed being asked, how so great a wickedness had been committed,
Judg KJV 20:3  (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel were gone up to Mizpeh.) Then said the children of Israel, Tell us, how was this wickedness?
Judg VulgClem 20:3  (Nec latuit filios Benjamin quod ascendissent filii Israël in Maspha.) Interrogatusque Levita, maritus mulieris interfectæ, quomodo tantum scelus perpetratum esset,
Judg DRC 20:4  Answered: I came into Gabaa, of Benjamin, with my wife, and there I lodged:
Judg KJV 20:4  And the Levite, the husband of the woman that was slain, answered and said, I came into Gibeah that belongeth to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to lodge.
Judg VulgClem 20:4  respondit : Veni in Gabaa Benjamin cum uxore mea, illucque diverti :
Judg DRC 20:5  And behold the men of that city, in the night beset the house wherein I was, intending to kill me, and abused my wife with an incredible fury of lust, so that at last she died.
Judg KJV 20:5  And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and beset the house round about upon me by night, and thought to have slain me: and my concubine have they forced, that she is dead.
Judg VulgClem 20:5  et ecce homines civitatis illius circumdederunt nocte domum in qua manebam, volentes me occidere, et uxorem meam incredibili furore libidinis vexantes, denique mortua est.
Judg DRC 20:6  And I took her and cut her in pieces, and sent the parts into all the borders of your possession: because there never was so heinous a crime, and so great an abomination committed in Israel.
Judg KJV 20:6  And I took my concubine, and cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the country of the inheritance of Israel: for they have committed lewdness and folly in Israel.
Judg VulgClem 20:6  Quam arreptam, in frustra concidi, misique partes in omnes terminos possessionis vestræ : quia numquam tantum nefas, et tam grande piaculum, factum est in Israël.
Judg DRC 20:7  You are all here, O children of Israel, determine what you ought to do.
Judg KJV 20:7  Behold, ye are all children of Israel; give here your advice and counsel.
Judg VulgClem 20:7  Adestis, omnes filii Israël : decernite quid facere debeatis.
Judg DRC 20:8  And all the people standing, answered as by the voice of one man: We will not return to our tents, neither shall any one of us go into his own house:
Judg KJV 20:8  And all the people arose as one man, saying, We will not any of us go to his tent, neither will we any of us turn into his house.
Judg VulgClem 20:8  Stansque omnis populus, quasi unius hominis sermone respondit : Non recedemus in tabernacula nostra, nec suam quisquam intrabit domum :
Judg DRC 20:9  But this we will do in common against Gabaa:
Judg KJV 20:9  But now this shall be the thing which we will do to Gibeah; we will go up by lot against it;
Judg DRC 20:10  We will take ten men of a hundred out of all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred out of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to bring victuals for the army, that we may fight against Gabaa of Benjamin, and render to it for its wickedness, what it deserveth.
Judg KJV 20:10  And we will take ten men of an hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, and an hundred of a thousand, and a thousand out of ten thousand, to fetch victual for the people, that they may do, when they come to Gibeah of Benjamin, according to all the folly that they have wrought in Israel.
Judg DRC 20:11  And all Israel were gathered together against the city, as one man, with one mind, and one counsel:
Judg KJV 20:11  So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, knit together as one man.
Judg VulgClem 20:11  Convenitque universus Israël ad civitatem, quasi homo unus eadem mente, unoque consilio.
Judg DRC 20:12  And they sent messengers to all the tribe of Benjamin, to say to them: Why hath so great an abomination been found among you?
Judg KJV 20:12  And the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, What wickedness is this that is done among you?
Judg DRC 20:13  Deliver up the men of Gabaa, that have committed this heinous crime, that they may die, and the evil may be taken away out of Israel. But they would not hearken to the proposition of their brethren the children of Israel:
Judg KJV 20:13  Now therefore deliver us the men, the children of Belial, which are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death, and put away evil from Israel. But the children of Benjamin would not hearken to the voice of their brethren the children of Israel:
Judg VulgClem 20:13  Tradite homines de Gabaa, qui hoc flagitium perpetrarunt, ut moriantur, et auferatur malum de Israël. Qui noluerunt fratrum suorum filiorum Israël audire mandatum :
Judg DRC 20:14  But out of all the cities which were of their lot, they gathered themselves together into Gabaa, to aid them, and to fight against the whole people of Israel.
Judg KJV 20:14  But the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together out of the cities unto Gibeah, to go out to battle against the children of Israel.
Judg DRC 20:15  And there were found of Benjamin five and twenty thousand men that drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gabaa,
Judg KJV 20:15  And the children of Benjamin were numbered at that time out of the cities twenty and six thousand men that drew sword, beside the inhabitants of Gibeah, which were numbered seven hundred chosen men.
Judg VulgClem 20:15  Inventique sunt viginti quinque millia de Benjamin educentium gladium, præter habitatores Gabaa,
Judg DRC 20:16  Who were seven hundred most valiant men, fighting with the left hand as well as with the right: and slinging stones so sure that they could hit even a hair, and not miss by the stone's going on either side.
Judg KJV 20:16  Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss.
Judg DRC 20:17  Of the men of Israel also, beside the children of Benjamin, were found four hundred thousand that drew swords and were prepared to fight.
Judg KJV 20:17  And the men of Israel, beside Benjamin, were numbered four hundred thousand men that drew sword: all these were men of war.
Judg DRC 20:18  And they arose and came to the house of God, that is, to Silo: and they consulted God, and said: Who shall be in our army the first to go to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord answered them: Let Juda be your leader.
Judg KJV 20:18  And the children of Israel arose, and went up to the house of God, and asked counsel of God, and said, Which of us shall go up first to the battle against the children of Benjamin? And the Lord said, Judah shall go up first.
Judg VulgClem 20:18  Qui surgentes venerunt in domum Dei, hoc est, in Silo : consulueruntque Deum, atque dixerunt : Quis erit in exercitu nostro princeps certaminis contra filios Benjamin ? Quibus respondit Dominus : Judas sit dux vester.
Judg DRC 20:19  And forthwith the children of Israel rising in the morning, camped by Gabaa:
Judg KJV 20:19  And the children of Israel rose up in the morning, and encamped against Gibeah.
Judg VulgClem 20:19  Statimque filii Israël surgentes mane, castrametati sunt juxta Gabaa :
Judg DRC 20:20  And going out from thence to fight against Benjamin, began to assault the city.
Judg KJV 20:20  And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah.
Judg DRC 20:21  And the children of Benjamin coming out of Gabaa slew of the children of Israel that day two and twenty thousand men.
Judg KJV 20:21  And the children of Benjamin came forth out of Gibeah, and destroyed down to the ground of the Israelites that day twenty and two thousand men.
Judg DRC 20:22  Again Israel, trusting in their strength and their number, set their army in array in the same place, where they had fought before:
Judg KJV 20:22  And the people the men of Israel encouraged themselves, and set their battle again in array in the place where they put themselves in array the first day.
Judg VulgClem 20:22  Rursum filii Israël et fortitudine et numero confidentes, in eodem loco in quo prius certaverant, aciem direxerunt :
Judg DRC 20:23  Yet so that they first went up and wept before the Lord until night: and consulted him and said: Shall I go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin my brethren or not? And he answered them: Go up against them, and join battle.
Judg KJV 20:23  (And the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until even, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, Shall I go up again to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother? And the Lord said, Go up against him.)
Judg DRC 20:24  And when the children of Israel went out the next day to fight against the children of Benjamin,
Judg KJV 20:24  And the children of Israel came near against the children of Benjamin the second day.
Judg VulgClem 20:24  Cumque filii Israël altera die contra filios Benjamin ad prælium processissent,
Judg DRC 20:25  The children of Benjamin sallied forth out of the gates of Gabaa: and meeting them, made so great a slaughter of them, as to kill eighteen thousand men that drew the sword.
Judg KJV 20:25  And Benjamin went forth against them out of Gibeah the second day, and destroyed down to the ground of the children of Israel again eighteen thousand men; all these drew the sword.
Judg DRC 20:26  Wherefore all the children of Israel came to the house of God, and sat and wept before the Lord: and they fasted that day till the evening, and offered to him holocausts, and victims of peace offerings,
Judg KJV 20:26  Then all the children of Israel, and all the people, went up, and came unto the house of God, and wept, and sat there before the Lord, and fasted that day until even, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord.
Judg VulgClem 20:26  Quam ob rem omnes filii Israël venerunt in domum Dei, et sedentes flebant coram Domino : jejunaveruntque die illo usque ad vesperam, et obtulerunt ei holocausta, atque pacificas victimas,
Judg DRC 20:27  And inquired of him concerning their state. At that time the ark of the covenant of the Lord was there,
Judg KJV 20:27  And the children of Israel enquired of the Lord, (for the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,
Judg VulgClem 20:27  et super statu suo interrogaverunt. Eo tempore ibi erat arca fœderis Dei,
Judg DRC 20:28  And Phinees, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, was over the house. So they consulted the Lord, and said: Shall we go out any more to fight against the children of Benjamin, our brethren, or shall we cease? And the Lord said to them: Go up, for to morrow I will deliver them into your hands.
Judg KJV 20:28  And Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days,) saying, Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of Benjamin my brother, or shall I cease? And the Lord said, Go up; for to morrow I will deliver them into thine hand.
Judg VulgClem 20:28  et Phinees filius Eleazari filii Aaron præpositus domus. Consuluerunt igitur Dominum, atque dixerunt : Exire ultra debemus ad pugnam contra filios Benjamin fratres nostros, an quiescere ? Quibus ait Dominus : Ascendite : cras enim tradam eos in manus vestras.
Judg DRC 20:29  And the children of Israel set ambushes round about the city of Gabaa:
Judg KJV 20:29  And Israel set liers in wait round about Gibeah.
Judg VulgClem 20:29  Posueruntque filii Israël insidias per circuitum urbis Gabaa :
Judg DRC 20:30  And they drew up their army against Benjamin the third time, as they had done the first and second.
Judg KJV 20:30  And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in array against Gibeah, as at other times.
Judg VulgClem 20:30  et tertia vice, sicut semel et bis, contra Benjamin exercitum produxerunt.
Judg DRC 20:31  And the children of Benjamin boldly issued out of the city, and seeing their enemies flee, pursued them a long way, so as to wound and kill some of them, as they had done the first and second day, whilst they fled by two highways, whereof one goeth up to Bethel and the other to Gabaa, and they slew about thirty men:
Judg KJV 20:31  And the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city; and they began to smite of the people, and kill, as at other times, in the highways, of which one goeth up to the house of God, and the other to Gibeah in the field, about thirty men of Israel.
Judg DRC 20:32  For they thought to cut them off as they did before. But they artfully feigning a flight, designed to draw them away from the city, and by their seeming to flee, to bring them to the highways aforesaid.
Judg KJV 20:32  And the children of Benjamin said, They are smitten down before us, as at the first. But the children of Israel said, Let us flee, and draw them from the city unto the highways.
Judg VulgClem 20:32  putaverunt enim solito eos more cedere.
Judg DRC 20:33  Then all the children of Israel rising up out of the places where they were, set their army in battle array, in the place which is called Baalthamar. The ambushes also, which were about the city, began by little and little to come forth,
Judg KJV 20:33  And all the men of Israel rose up out of their place, and put themselves in array at Baal–tamar: and the liers in wait of Israel came forth out of their places, even out of the meadows of Gibeah.
Judg VulgClem 20:33  Omnes itaque filii Israël surgentes de sedibus suis, tetenderunt aciem in loco qui vocatur Baalthamar. Insidiæ quoque, quæ circa urbem erant, paulatim se aperire cœperunt,
Judg DRC 20:34  And to march from the west side of the city. And other ten thousand men chosen out of all Israel, attacked the inhabitants of the city. And the battle grew hot against the children of Benjamin: and they understood not that present death threatened them on every side.
Judg KJV 20:34  And there came against Gibeah ten thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and the battle was sore: but they knew not that evil was near them.
Judg DRC 20:35  And the Lord defeated them before the children of Israel, and they slew of them in that day five and twenty thousand, and one hundred, all fighting men, and that drew the sword.
Judg KJV 20:35  And the Lord smote Benjamin before Israel: and the children of Israel destroyed of the Benjamites that day twenty and five thousand and an hundred men: all these drew the sword.
Judg VulgClem 20:35  Percussitque eos Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, et interfecerunt ex eis in illo die viginti quinque millia, et centum viros, omnes bellatores et educentes gladium.
Judg DRC 20:36  But the children of Benjamin, when they saw themselves to be too weak, began to flee. Which the children of Israel seeing, gave them place to flee, that they might come to the ambushes that were prepared, which they had set near the city.
Judg KJV 20:36  So the children of Benjamin saw that they were smitten: for the men of Israel gave place to the Benjamites, because they trusted unto the liers in wait which they had set beside Gibeah.
Judg DRC 20:37  And they that were in ambush arose on a sudden out of their coverts, and whilst Benjamin turned their backs to the slayers, went into the city, and smote it with the edge of the sword.
Judg KJV 20:37  And the liers in wait hasted, and rushed upon Gibeah; and the liers in wait drew themselves along, and smote all the city with the edge of the sword.
Judg DRC 20:38  Now the children of Israel had given a sign to them, whom they had laid in ambushes, that after they had taken the city, they should make a fire: that by the smoke rising on high, they might shew that the city was taken.
Judg KJV 20:38  Now there was an appointed sign between the men of Israel and the liers in wait, that they should make a great flame with smoke rise up out of the city.
Judg VulgClem 20:38  Signum autem dederant filii Israël his quos in insidiis collocaverant, ut postquam urbem cepissent, ignem accenderent : ut ascendente in altum fumo, captam urbem demonstrarent.
Judg DRC 20:39  And when the children of Israel saw this in the battle, (for the children of Benjamin thought they fled, and pursued them vigorously, killing thirty men of their army)
Judg KJV 20:39  And when the men of Israel retired in the battle, Benjamin began to smite and kill of the men of Israel about thirty persons: for they said, Surely they are smitten down before us, as in the first battle.
Judg DRC 20:40  And perceived, as it were, a pillar of smoke rise up from the city; and Benjamin looking back, saw that the city was taken, and that the flames ascended on high:
Judg KJV 20:40  But when the flame began to arise up out of the city with a pillar of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and, behold, the flame of the city ascended up to heaven.
Judg DRC 20:41  They that before had made as if they fled, turning their faces, stood bravely against them. Which the children of Benjamin seeing, turned their backs,
Judg KJV 20:41  And when the men of Israel turned again, the men of Benjamin were amazed: for they saw that evil was come upon them.
Judg DRC 20:42  And began to go towards the way of the desert, the enemy pursuing them thither also. And they that fired the city came also out to meet them.
Judg KJV 20:42  Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel unto the way of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them; and them which came out of the cities they destroyed in the midst of them.
Judg DRC 20:43  And so it was, that they were slain on both sides by the enemies, and there was no rest of their men dying. They fell and were beaten down on the east side of the city of Gabaa.
Judg KJV 20:43  Thus they inclosed the Benjamites round about, and chased them, and trode them down with ease over against Gibeah toward the sunrising.
Judg DRC 20:44  And they that were slain in the same place, were eighteen thousand men, all most valiant soldiers.
Judg KJV 20:44  And there fell of Benjamin eighteen thousand men; all these were men of valour.
Judg DRC 20:45  And when they that remained of Benjamin saw this, they fled into the wilderness, and made towards the rock that is called Remmon. In that flight also, as they were straggling, and going different ways; they slew of them five thousand men. And as they went farther, they still pursued them, and slew also other two thousand.
Judg KJV 20:45  And they turned and fled toward the wilderness unto the rock of Rimmon: and they gleaned of them in the highways five thousand men; and pursued hard after them unto Gidom, and slew two thousand men of them.
Judg DRC 20:46  And so it came to pass, that all that were slain of Benjamin, in divers places, were five and twenty thousand fighting men, most valiant for war.
Judg KJV 20:46  So that all which fell that day of Benjamin were twenty and five thousand men that drew the sword; all these were men of valour.
Judg DRC 20:47  And there remained of all the number of Benjamin only six hundred men that were able to escape, and flee to the wilderness: and they abode in the rock Remmon four months.
Judg KJV 20:47  But six hundred men turned and fled to the wilderness unto the rock Rimmon, and abode in the rock Rimmon four months.
Judg VulgClem 20:47  Remanserunt itaque de omni numero Benjamin, qui evadere et fugere in solitudinem potuerunt, sexcenti viri : sederuntque in petra Remmon mensibus quatuor.
Judg DRC 20:48  But the children of Israel returning, put all the remains of the city to the sword, both men and beasts, and all the cities and villages of Benjamin were consumed with devouring flames.
Judg KJV 20:48  And the men of Israel turned again upon the children of Benjamin, and smote them with the edge of the sword, as well the men of every city, as the beast, and all that came to hand: also they set on fire all the cities that they came to.
Judg VulgClem 20:48  Regressi autem filii Israël, omnes reliquias civitatis a viris usque ad jumenta gladio percusserunt, cunctasque urbes et viculos Benjamin vorax flamma consumpsit.
