Chapter 31
Job DRC 31:1  I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.
Job KJV 31:1  I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?
Job DRC 31:2  For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?
Job KJV 31:2  For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?
Job DRC 31:3  Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?
Job KJV 31:3  Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
Job DRC 31:4  Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?
Job VulgClem 31:4  Nonne ipse considerat vias meas, et cunctos gressus meos dinumerat ?
Job KJV 31:4  Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?
Job DRC 31:5  If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:
Job VulgClem 31:5  Si ambulavi in vanitate, et festinavit in dolo pes meus,
Job KJV 31:5  If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;
Job DRC 31:6  Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.
Job VulgClem 31:6  appendat me in statera justa, et sciat Deus simplicitatem meam.
Job KJV 31:6  Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.
Job DRC 31:7  If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:
Job VulgClem 31:7  Si declinavit gressus meus de via, et si secutum est oculos meos cor meum, et si manibus meis adhæsit macula,
Job KJV 31:7  If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;
Job DRC 31:8  Then let me sow and let another reap: and let my offspring be rooted out.
Job VulgClem 31:8  seram, et alius comedat, et progenies mea eradicetur.
Job KJV 31:8  Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.
Job DRC 31:9  If my heart hath been deceived upon a woman, and if I have laid wait at my friend's door:
Job VulgClem 31:9  Si deceptum est cor meum super muliere, et si ad ostium amici mei insidiatus sum,
Job KJV 31:9  If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door;
Job DRC 31:10  Let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lie with her.
Job KJV 31:10  Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.
Job DRC 31:11  For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.
Job KJV 31:11  For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.
Job DRC 31:12  It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.
Job KJV 31:12  For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.
Job DRC 31:13  If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:
Job VulgClem 31:13  Si contempsi subire judicium cum servo meo et ancilla mea, cum disceptarent adversum me :
Job KJV 31:13  If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;
Job DRC 31:14  For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?
Job KJV 31:14  What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?
Job DRC 31:15  Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?
Job VulgClem 31:15  Numquid non in utero fecit me, qui et illum operatus est, et formavit me in vulva unus ?
Job KJV 31:15  Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?
Job DRC 31:16  If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:
Job VulgClem 31:16  Si negavi quod volebant pauperibus, et oculos viduæ expectare feci ;
Job KJV 31:16  If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;
Job DRC 31:17  If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:
Job VulgClem 31:17  si comedi buccellam meam solus, et non comedit pupillus ex ea
Job KJV 31:17  Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;
Job DRC 31:18  (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb:)
Job VulgClem 31:18  (quia ab infantia mea crevit mecum miseratio, et de utero matris meæ egressa est mecum) ;
Job KJV 31:18  (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)
Job DRC 31:19  If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:
Job VulgClem 31:19  si despexi pereuntem, eo quod non habuerit indumentum, et absque operimento pauperem ;
Job KJV 31:19  If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;
Job DRC 31:20  If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:
Job VulgClem 31:20  si non benedixerunt mihi latera ejus, et de velleribus ovium mearum calefactus est ;
Job KJV 31:20  If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
Job DRC 31:21  If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:
Job VulgClem 31:21  si levavi super pupillum manum meam, etiam cum viderem me in porta superiorem :
Job KJV 31:21  If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:
Job DRC 31:22  Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.
Job VulgClem 31:22  humerus meus a junctura sua cadat, et brachium meum cum suis ossibus confringatur.
Job KJV 31:22  Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.
Job DRC 31:23  For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was unable to bear.
Job KJV 31:23  For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
Job DRC 31:24  If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:
Job VulgClem 31:24  Si putavi aurum robur meum, et obrizo dixi : Fiducia mea ;
Job KJV 31:24  If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;
Job DRC 31:25  If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.
Job VulgClem 31:25  si lætatus sum super multis divitiis meis, et quia plurima reperit manus mea ;
Job KJV 31:25  If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;
Job DRC 31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined and the moon going in brightness:
Job VulgClem 31:26  si vidi solem cum fulgeret, et lunam incedentem clare,
Job KJV 31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
Job DRC 31:27  And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:
Job VulgClem 31:27  et lætatum est in abscondito cor meum, et osculatus sum manum meam ore meo :
Job KJV 31:27  And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:
Job DRC 31:28  Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.
Job KJV 31:28  This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.
Job DRC 31:29  If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.
Job KJV 31:29  If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:
Job DRC 31:30  For I have not been given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.
Job KJV 31:30  Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.
Job DRC 31:31  If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?
Job KJV 31:31  If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.
Job DRC 31:32  The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.
Job VulgClem 31:32  foris non mansit peregrinus : ostium meum viatori patuit.
Job KJV 31:32  The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.
Job DRC 31:33  If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.
Job VulgClem 31:33  Si abscondi quasi homo peccatum meum, et celavi in sinu meo iniquitatem meam ;
Job KJV 31:33  If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:
Job DRC 31:34  If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.
Job KJV 31:34  Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?
Job DRC 31:35  Who would grant me a hearing, that the Almighty may hear my desire: and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,
Job KJV 31:35  Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.
Job DRC 31:36  That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?
Job VulgClem 31:36  ut in humero meo portem illum, et circumdem illum quasi coronam mihi ?
Job KJV 31:36  Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.
Job DRC 31:37  At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.
Job VulgClem 31:37  Per singulos gradus meos pronuntiabo illum, et quasi principi offeram eum.
Job KJV 31:37  I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.
Job DRC 31:38  If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:
Job VulgClem 31:38  Si adversum me terra mea clamat, et cum ipsa sulci ejus deflent :
Job KJV 31:38  If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;
Job DRC 31:39  If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the son of the tillers thereof:
Job VulgClem 31:39  si fructus ejus comedi absque pecunia, et animam agricolarum ejus afflixi :
Job KJV 31:39  If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:
Job DRC 31:40  Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.
Job KJV 31:40  Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
