31:1  I made a covenant with my eyes, that I would not so much as think upon a virgin.

31:1  Pepigi fœdus cum oculis meis, ut ne cogitarem quidem de virgine.

31:1  I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

31:2  For what part should God from above have in me, and what inheritance the Almighty from on high?

31:2  Quam enim partem haberet in me Deus desuper, et hæreditatem Omnipotens de excelsis ?

31:3  Is not destruction to the wicked, and aversion to them that work iniquity?

31:3  Numquid non perditio est iniquo, et alienatio operantibus injustitiam ?

31:4  Doth not he consider my ways, and number all my steps?

31:4  Nonne ipse considerat vias meas, et cunctos gressus meos dinumerat ?

31:5  If I have walked in vanity, and my foot hath made haste to deceit:

31:5  Si ambulavi in vanitate, et festinavit in dolo pes meus,

31:5  If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

31:6  Let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.

31:6  appendat me in statera justa, et sciat Deus simplicitatem meam.

31:6  Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

31:7  If my step hath turned out of the way, and if my heart hath followed my eyes, and if a spot hath cleaved to my hands:

31:7  Si declinavit gressus meus de via, et si secutum est oculos meos cor meum, et si manibus meis adhæsit macula,

31:11  For this is a heinous crime, and a most grievous iniquity.

31:11  Hoc enim nefas est, et iniquitas maxima.

31:12  It is a fire that devoureth even to destruction, and rooteth up all things that spring.

31:13  If I have despised to abide judgment with my manservant, or my maidservant, when they had any controversy against me:

31:13  Si contempsi subire judicium cum servo meo et ancilla mea, cum disceptarent adversum me :

31:13  If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

31:14  For what shall I do when God shall rise to judge? and when he shall examine, what shall I answer him?

31:14  quid enim faciam cum surrexerit ad judicandum Deus ? et cum quæsierit, quid respondebo illi ?

31:14  What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

31:15  Did not he that made me in the womb make him also: and did not one and the same form me in the womb?

31:15  Numquid non in utero fecit me, qui et illum operatus est, et formavit me in vulva unus ?

31:16  If I have denied to the poor what they desired, and have made the eyes of the widow wait:

31:16  Si negavi quod volebant pauperibus, et oculos viduæ expectare feci ;

31:16  If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

31:17  If I have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof:

31:17  si comedi buccellam meam solus, et non comedit pupillus ex ea

31:17  Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

31:18  (For from my infancy mercy grew up with me: and it came out with me from my mother's womb:)

31:18  (quia ab infantia mea crevit mecum miseratio, et de utero matris meæ egressa est mecum) ;

31:18  (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)

31:19  If I have despised him that was perishing for want of clothing, and the poor man that had no covering:

31:19  si despexi pereuntem, eo quod non habuerit indumentum, et absque operimento pauperem ;

31:19  If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

31:20  If his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep:

31:20  si non benedixerunt mihi latera ejus, et de velleribus ovium mearum calefactus est ;

31:20  If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

31:21  If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw myself superior in the gate:

31:21  si levavi super pupillum manum meam, etiam cum viderem me in porta superiorem :

31:22  Let my shoulder fall from its joint, and let my arm with its bones be broken.

31:22  humerus meus a junctura sua cadat, et brachium meum cum suis ossibus confringatur.

31:22  Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

31:23  For I have always feared God as waves swelling over me, and his weight I was unable to bear.

31:23  Semper enim quasi tumentes super me fluctus timui Deum, et pondus ejus ferre non potui.

31:23  For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

31:24  If I have thought gold my strength, and have said to fine gold: My confidence:

31:24  Si putavi aurum robur meum, et obrizo dixi : Fiducia mea ;

31:24  If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

31:25  If I have rejoiced over my great riches, and because my hand had gotten much.

31:25  si lætatus sum super multis divitiis meis, et quia plurima reperit manus mea ;

31:25  If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined and the moon going in brightness:

31:26  si vidi solem cum fulgeret, et lunam incedentem clare,

31:26  If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

31:27  And my heart in secret hath rejoiced, and I have kissed my hand with my mouth:

31:27  et lætatum est in abscondito cor meum, et osculatus sum manum meam ore meo :

31:27  And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

31:28  Which is a very great iniquity, and a denial against the most high God.

31:28  quæ est iniquitas maxima, et negatio contra Deum altissimum.

31:28  This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

31:29  If I have been glad at the downfall of him that hated me, and have rejoiced that evil had found him.

31:29  Si gavisus sum ad ruinam ejus qui me oderat, et exsultavi quod invenisset eum malum :

31:29  If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

31:30  For I have not been given my mouth to sin, by wishing a curse to his soul.

31:30  non enim dedi ad peccandum guttur meum, ut expeterem maledicens animam ejus.

31:30  Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

31:31  If the men of my tabernacle have not said: Who will give us of his flesh that we may be filled?

31:31  Si non dixerunt viri tabernaculi mei : Quis det de carnibus ejus, ut saturemur ?

31:31  If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

31:32  The stranger did not stay without, my door was open to the traveller.

31:32  foris non mansit peregrinus : ostium meum viatori patuit.

31:32  The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

31:33  If as a man I have hid my sin, and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom.

31:33  Si abscondi quasi homo peccatum meum, et celavi in sinu meo iniquitatem meam ;

31:33  If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

31:34  If I have been afraid at a very great multitude, and the contempt of kinsmen hath terrified me: and have not rather held my peace, and not gone out of the door.

31:34  si expavi ad multitudinem nimiam, et despectio propinquorum terruit me : et non magis tacui, nec egressus sum ostium.

31:34  Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

31:35  Who would grant me a hearing, that the Almighty may hear my desire: and that he himself that judgeth would write a book,

31:35  Quis mihi tribuat auditorem, ut desiderium meum audiat Omnipotens, et librum scribat ipse qui judicat,

31:35  Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

31:36  That I may carry it on my shoulder, and put it about me as a crown?

31:36  ut in humero meo portem illum, et circumdem illum quasi coronam mihi ?

31:36  Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

31:37  At every step of mine I would pronounce it, and offer it as to a prince.

31:37  Per singulos gradus meos pronuntiabo illum, et quasi principi offeram eum.

31:37  I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

31:38  If my land cry against me, and with it the furrows thereof mourn:

31:38  Si adversum me terra mea clamat, et cum ipsa sulci ejus deflent :

31:38  If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

31:39  If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, and have afflicted the son of the tillers thereof:

31:39  si fructus ejus comedi absque pecunia, et animam agricolarum ejus afflixi :

31:39  If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

31:40  Let thistles grow up to me instead of wheat, and thorns instead of barley.

31:40  pro frumento oriatur mihi tribulus, et pro hordeo spina. Finita sunt verba Job.
