11:1  And it came to pass that as he was in a certain place praying, when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him: Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

11:1  Et factum est : cum esset in quodam loco orans, ut cessavit, dixit unus ex discipulis ejus ad eum : Domine, doce nos orare, sicut docuit et Joannes discipulos suos.

11:1  And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

11:2  And he said to them: When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.

11:2  Et ait illis : Cum oratis, dicite : Pater, sanctificetur nomen tuum. Adveniat regnum tuum.

11:2  And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

11:3  Give us this day our daily bread.

11:4  And forgive us our sins, for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.

11:5  And he said to them: Which of you shall have a friend and shall go to him at midnight and shall say to him: Friend, lend me three loaves,

11:5  Et ait ad illos : Quis vestrum habebit amicum, et ibit ad illum media nocte, et dicet illi : Amice, commoda mihi tres panes,

11:5  And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves;

11:6  Because a friend of mine is come off his journey to me and I have not what to set before him.

11:6  quoniam amicus meus venit de via ad me, et non habeo quod ponam ante illum,

11:6  For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him?

11:7  And he from within should answer and say: Trouble me not; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot rise and give thee.

11:7  et ille de intus respondens dicat : Noli mihi molestus esse, jam ostium clausum est, et pueri mei mecum sunt in cubili : non possum surgere, et dare tibi.

11:7  And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee.

11:8  Yet if he shall continue knocking, I say to you, although he will not rise and give him because he is his friend; yet, because of his importunity, he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

11:8  Et si ille perseveraverit pulsans : dico vobis, etsi non dabit illi surgens eo quod amicus ejus sit, propter improbitatem tamen ejus surget, et dabit illi quotquot habet necessarios.

11:8  I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth.

11:9  And I say to you: Ask, and it shall be given you: seek, and you shall find: knock, and it shall be opened to you.

11:9  Et ego dico vobis : Petite, et dabitur vobis ; quærite, et invenietis ; pulsate, et aperietur vobis.

11:9  And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.

11:10  For every one that asketh receiveth: and he that seeketh findeth: and to him that knocketh it shall be opened:

11:10  Omnis enim qui petit, accipit : et qui quærit, invenit : et pulsanti aperietur.

11:10  For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

11:11  And which of you, if he ask his father bread, will he give him a stone? Or a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

11:11  Quis autem ex vobis patrem petit panem, numquid lapidem dabit illi ? aut piscem, numquid pro pisce serpentem dabit illi ?

11:11  If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?

11:12  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he reach him a scorpion?

11:12  aut si petierit ovum, numquid porriget illi scorpionem ?

11:12  Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion?

11:13  If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father from heaven give the good Spirit to them that ask him?

11:13  Si ergo vos, cum sitis mali, nostis bona data dare filiis vestris : quanto magis Pater vester de cælo dabit spiritum bonum petentibus se ?

11:13  If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

11:14  And he was casting out a devil: and the same was dumb. And when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke: and the multitudes, were in admiration at it.

11:14  Et erat ejiciens dæmonium, et illud erat mutum. Et cum ejecisset dæmonium, locutus est mutus, et admiratæ sunt turbæ.

11:14  And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered.

11:15  But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils.

11:15  Quidam autem ex eis dixerunt : In Beelzebub principe dæmoniorum ejicit dæmonia.

11:15  But some of them said, He casteth out devils through Beelzebub the chief of the devils.

11:16  And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven.

11:16  Et alii tentantes, signum de cælo quærebant ab eo.

11:16  And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven.

11:17  But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation; and house upon house shall fall.

11:17  Ipse autem ut vidit cogitationes eorum, dixit eis : Omne regnum in seipsum divisum desolabitur, et domus supra domum cadet.

11:17  But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth.

11:18  And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because you say that through Beelzebub I cast out devils.

11:18  Si autem et Satanas in seipsum divisus est, quomodo stabit regnum ejus ? quia dicitis in Beelzebub me ejicere dæmonia.

11:18  If Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through Beelzebub.

11:19  Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore, they shall be your judges.

11:19  Si autem ego in Beelzebub ejicio dæmonia : filii vestri in quo ejiciunt ? ideo ipsi judices vestri erunt.

11:19  And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges.

11:20  But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you.

11:20  Porro si in digito Dei ejicio dæmonia : profecto pervenit in vos regnum Dei.

11:20  But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.

11:21  When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth.

11:21  Cum fortis armatus custodit atrium suum, in pace sunt ea quæ possidet.

11:21  When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace:

11:22  But if a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted and will distribute his spoils.

11:22  Si autem fortior eo superveniens vicerit eum, universa arma ejus auferet, in quibus confidebat, et spolia ejus distribuet.

11:22  But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils.

11:23  He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

11:23  Qui non est mecum, contra me est : et qui non colligit mecum, dispergit.

11:23  He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.

11:24  When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through places without water, seeking rest: and not finding, he saith: I will return into my house whence I came out.

11:24  Cum immundus spiritus exierit de homine, ambulat per loca inaquosa, quærens requiem : et non inveniens dicit : Revertar in domum meam unde exivi.

11:24  When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out.

11:25  And when he is come, he findeth it swept and garnished.

11:25  Et cum venerit, invenit eam scopis mundatam, et ornatam.

11:25  And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished.

11:26  Then he goeth and taketh with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself: and entering in they dwell there. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

11:26  Tunc vadit, et assumit septem alios spiritus secum, nequiores se, et ingressi habitant ibi. Et fiunt novissima hominis illius pejora prioribus.

11:26  Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first.

11:27  And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman from the crowd, lifting up her voice, said to him: Blessed is the womb that bore thee and the paps that gave thee suck.

11:27  Factum est autem, cum hæc diceret : extollens vocem quædam mulier de turba dixit illi : Beatus venter qui te portavit, et ubera quæ suxisti.

11:27  And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked.

11:28  But he said: Yea rather, blessed are they who hear the word of God and keep it.

11:28  At ille dixit : Quinimmo beati, qui audiunt verbum Dei et custodiunt illud.

11:28  But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

11:29  And the multitudes running together, he began to say: This generation is a wicked generation. It asketh a sign: and a sign shall not be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

11:29  Turbis autem concurrentibus cœpit dicere : Generatio hæc, generatio nequam est : signum quærit, et signum non dabitur ei, nisi signum Jonæ prophetæ.

11:29  And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.

11:30  For as Jonas was a sign to the Ninivites; so shall the Son of man also be to this generation.

11:30  Nam sicut fuit Jonas signum Ninivitis, ita erit et Filius hominis generationi isti.

11:30  For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.

11:31  The queen of the south shall rise in the judgment with the men of this generation and shall condemn them: because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon. And behold more than Solomon here.

11:31  Regina austri surget in judicio cum viris generationis hujus, et condemnabit illos : quia venit a finibus terræ audire sapientiam Salomonis : et ecce plus quam Salomon hic.

11:31  The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

11:32  The men of Ninive shall rise in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it; Because they did penance at the preaching of Jonas. And behold more than Jonas here.

11:32  Viri Ninivitæ surgent in judicio cum generatione hac, et condemnabunt illam : quia pœnitentiam egerunt ad prædicationem Jonæ, et ecce plus quam Jonas hic.

11:32  The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

11:33  No man lighteth a candle and putteth it in a hidden place, nor under a bushel: but upon a candlestick, that they that come in may see the light.

11:33  Nemo lucernam accendit, et in abscondito ponit, neque sub modio : sed supra candelabrum, ut qui ingrediuntur, lumen videant.

11:33  No man, when he hath lighted a candle, putteth it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light.

11:34  The light of thy body is thy eye. If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be lightsome: but if it be evil, thy body also will be darksome.

11:34  Lucerna corporis tui est oculus tuus. Si oculus tuus fuerit simplex, totum corpus tuum lucidum erit : si autem nequam fuerit, etiam corpus tuum tenebrosum erit.

11:34  The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.

11:35  Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

11:35  Vide ergo ne lumen quod in te est, tenebræ sint.

11:35  Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness.

11:36  If then thy whole body be lightsome, having no part of darkness: the whole shall be lightsome and, as a bright lamp, shall enlighten thee.

11:36  Si ergo corpus tuum totum lucidum fuerit, non habens aliquam partem tenebrarum, erit lucidum totum, et sicut lucerna fulgoris illuminabit te.

11:36  If thy whole body therefore be full of light, having no part dark, the whole shall be full of light, as when the bright shining of a candle doth give thee light.

11:37  And as he was speaking, a certain Pharisee prayed him that he would dine with him. And he going in, sat down to eat.

11:37  Et cum loqueretur, rogavit illum quidam pharisæus ut pranderet apud se. Et ingressus recubuit.

11:37  And as he spake, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to meat.

11:38  And the Pharisee began to say, thinking within himself, why he was not washed before dinner.

11:38  Pharisæus autem cœpit intra se reputans dicere, quare non baptizatus esset ante prandium.

11:38  And when the Pharisee saw it, he marvelled that he had not first washed before dinner.

11:39  And the Lord said to him: Now you, Pharisees, make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter: but your inside is full of rapine and iniquity.

11:39  Et ait Dominus ad illum : Nunc vos pharisæi, quod deforis est calicis et catini, mundatis : quod autem intus est vestrum, plenum est rapina et iniquitate.

11:39  And the Lord said unto him, Now do ye Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of ravening and wickedness.

11:40  Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make also that which is within?

11:40  Stulti ! nonne qui fecit quod deforis est, etiam id quod deintus est fecit ?

11:40  Ye fools, did not he that made that which is without make that which is within also?

11:41  But yet that which remaineth, give alms: and behold, all things are clean unto you.

11:41  Verumtamen quod superest, date eleemosynam : et ecce omnia munda sunt vobis.

11:41  But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

11:42  But woe to you, Pharisees, because you tithe mint and rue and every herb and pass over judgment and the charity of God. Now these things you ought to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

11:42  Sed væ vobis, pharisæis, quia decimatis mentham, et rutam, et omne olus, et præteritis judicium et caritatem Dei : hæc autem oportuit facere, et illa non omittere.

11:42  But woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over judgment and the love of God: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

11:43  Woe to you, Pharisees, because you love the uppermost seats in the synagogues and salutations in the marketplace.

11:43  Væ vobis, pharisæis, quia diligitis primas cathedras in synagogis, et salutationes in foro.

11:43  Woe unto you, Pharisees! for ye love the uppermost seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets.

11:44  Woe to you, because you are as sepulchres that appear not: and men that walk over are not aware.

11:44  Væ vobis, quia estis ut monumenta, quæ non apparent, et homines ambulantes supra, nesciunt.

11:44  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

11:45  And one of the lawyers answering, saith to him: Master, in saying these things, thou reproachest us also.

11:45  Respondens autem quidam ex legisperitis, ait illi : Magister, hæc dicens etiam contumeliam nobis facis.

11:45  Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.

11:46  But he said: Woe to you lawyers also, because you load men with burdens which they cannot bear and you yourselves touch not the packs with one of your fingers.

11:46  At ille ait : Et vobis legisperitis væ : quia oneratis homines oneribus, quæ portare non possunt, et ipsi uno digito vestro non tangitis sarcinas.

11:46  And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.

11:47  Woe to you who build the monuments of the prophets: and your fathers killed them.

11:47  Væ vobis, qui ædificatis monumenta prophetarum : patres autem vestri occiderunt illos.

11:47  Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and your fathers killed them.

11:48  Truly you bear witness that you consent to the doings of your fathers. For they indeed killed them: and you build their sepulchres.

11:48  Profecto testificamini quod consentitis operibus patrum vestrorum : quoniam ipsi quidem eos occiderunt, vos autem ædificatis eorum sepulchra.

11:48  Truly ye bear witness that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres.

11:49  For this cause also the wisdom of God said: I will send to them prophets and apostles: and some of them they will kill and persecute.

11:49  Propterea et sapientia Dei dixit : Mittam ad illos prophetas, et apostolos, et ex illis occident, et persequentur :

11:49  Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute:

11:50  That the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation,

11:50  ut inquiratur sanguis omnium prophetarum, qui effusus est a constitutione mundi a generatione ista,

11:50  That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation;

11:51  From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, who was slain between the altar and the temple. Yea I say to you: It shall be required of this generation.

11:51  a sanguine Abel, usque ad sanguinem Zachariæ, qui periit inter altare et ædem. Ita dico vobis, requiretur ab hac generatione.

11:51  From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zacharias, which perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation.

11:52  Woe to you lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge. You yourselves have not entered in: and those that were entering in, you have hindered.

11:52  Væ vobis, legisperitis, quia tulistis clavem scientiæ : ipsi non introistis, et eos qui introibant, prohibuistis.

11:52  Woe unto you, lawyers! for ye have taken away the key of knowledge: ye entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in ye hindered.

11:53  And as he was saying these things to them, the Pharisees and the lawyers began violently to urge him and to oppress his mouth about many things,

11:53  Cum autem hæc ad illos diceret, cœperunt pharisæi et legisperiti graviter insistere, et os ejus opprimere de multis,

11:53  And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things:

11:54  Lying in wait for him and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.

11:54  insidiantes ei, et quærentes aliquid capere de ore ejus, ut accusarent eum.

11:54  Laying wait for him, and seeking to catch something out of his mouth, that they might accuse him.
