38:1  Honour the physician for the need thou hast of him: for the most High hath created him.

38:1  Važ si lékaře, jak si za své služby zaslouží, vždyť i jeho stvořil Hospodin.

38:1  Honora medicum propter necessitatem : etenim illum creavit Altissimus.

38:2  For all healing is from God, and he shall receive gifts of the king.

38:2  Umění léčit má přece od Nejvyššího, i král se mu za ně dary odvděčí.

38:2  A Deo est enim omnis medela, et a rege accipiet donationem.

38:3  The skill of the physician shall lift up his head, and in the sight of great men he shall be praised.

38:3  Lékaře jeho vědění povýší, získá mu obdiv i před velmoži.

38:3  Disciplina medici exaltabit caput illius, et in conspectu magnatorum collaudabitur.

38:4  The most High hath created medicines out of the earth, and a wise man will not abhor them.

38:4  Hospodin dal ze země vyrůst léčivým bylinám a rozumný člověk jimi nepohrdá.

38:4  Altissimus creavit de terra medicamenta, et vir prudens non abhorrebit illa.

38:5  Was not bitter water made sweet with wood?

38:5  (Nezesládla snad voda od kusu dřeva, aby se ukázala jeho síla?

38:5  Nonne a ligno indulcata est aqua amara ?

38:6  The virtue of these things is come to the knowledge of men, and the most High hath given knowledge to men, that he may be honoured in his wonders.

38:6  Hospodin daroval lidem vědění, aby ho ctili za jeho divy.)

38:6  Ad agnitionem hominum virtus illorum : et dedit hominibus scientiam Altissimus, honorari in mirabilibus suis.

38:7  By these he shall cure and shall allay their pains, and of these the apothecary shall make sweet confections, and shall make up ointments of health, and of his works there shall be no end.

38:7  Lékař těmi bylinami léčí a odstraňuje bolest, mastičkář z nich připravuje lék.

38:7  In his curans mitigabit dolorem : et unguentarius faciet pigmenta suavitatis, et unctiones conficiet sanitatis : et non consummabuntur opera ejus.

38:8  For the peace of God is over all the face of the earth.

38:8  Jeho díla tak nikdy neskončí a jeho pokoj zavládne všude na zemi.

38:8  Pax enim Dei super faciem terræ.

38:9  My son, in thy sickness neglect not thyself, but pray to the Lord, and he shall heal thee.

38:9  Nepřehlížej to, chlapče, když jsi nemocný, ale modli se k Hospodinu a on tě uzdraví.

38:9  Fili, in tua infirmitate ne despicias teipsum : sed ora Dominum, et ipse curabit te.

38:10  Turn away from sin and order thy hands aright, and cleanse thy heart from all offence.

38:10  Zanech provinění, napřim své ruce a od každého hříchu očisti své srdce.

38:10  Averte a delicto, et dirige manus, et ab omni delicto munda cor tuum.

38:11  Give a sweet savour, and a memorial of fine flour, and make a fat offering, and then give place to the physician.

38:11  Obětuj kadidlo s bílou moukou jako památeční díl s nejlepším olejem, jaký si můžeš dovolit.

38:11  Da suavitatem et memoriam similaginis, et impingua oblationem, et da locum medico :

38:12  For the Lord created him: and let him not depart from thee, for his works are necessary.

38:12  Potom dej prostor lékaři – vždyť i jeho stvořil Hospodin – nenech ho odejít, vždyť je ti potřebný.

38:12  etenim illum Dominus creavit, et non discedat a te, quia opera ejus sunt necessaria.

38:13  For there is a time when thou must fall into their hands:

38:13  Někdy mají tvůj život v rukou lékaři;

38:13  Est enim tempus quando in manus illorum incurras :

38:14  And they shall beseech the Lord, that he would prosper what they give for ease and remedy, for their conversation.

38:14  i oni se totiž modlí k Hospodinu, aby jim pomohl dát nemocným úlevu a uzdravení, aby mohli žít.

38:14  ipsi vero Dominum deprecabuntur, ut dirigat requiem eorum, et sanitatem, propter conversationem illorum.

38:15  He that sinneth in the sight of his Maker, shall fall into the hands of the physician.

38:15  Kdo hřeší před svým Stvořitelem, ať padne do rukou lékaře!

38:15  Qui delinquit in conspectu ejus qui fecit eum, incidet in manus medici.

38:16  My son, shed tears over the dead, and begin to lament as if thou hadst suffered some great harm, and according to judgment cover his body, and neglect not his burial.

38:16  Chlapče, nad mrtvým prolévej slzy, naříkej jako v hrozné bolesti. Zaopatři tělo s patřičným obřadem a nezanedbej jeho pohřeb.

38:16  Fili, in mortuum produc lacrimas, et quasi dira passus incipe plorare : et secundum judicium contege corpus illius, et non despicias sepulturam illius.

38:17  And for fear of being ill spoken of weep bitterly for a day, and then comfort thyself in thy sadness.

38:17  Plakej hořce a vroucně naříkej, zachovej smutek podle pravidel – jeden dva dny, ať nepřijdeš do řečí, potom se ale nechej utěšit.

38:17  Propter delaturam autem amare fer luctum illius uno die, et consolare propter tristitiam :

38:18  And make mourning for him according to his merit for a day, or two, for fear of detraction.

38:18  Zármutek totiž vede ke smrti a zarmoucené srdce připravuje o síly.

38:18  et fac luctum secundum meritum ejus uno die, vel duobus, propter detractionem :

38:19  For of sadness cometh death, and it overwhelmeth the strength, and the sorrow of the heart boweth down the neck.

38:19  Zármutek zůstává i po neštěstí a život ubožáka je zoufalý.

38:19  a tristitia enim festinat mors, et cooperit virtutem, et tristitia cordis flectit cervicem.

38:20  In withdrawing aside sorrow remaineth: and the substance of the poor is according to his heart.

38:20  Nepropadej v srdci zármutku, zažeň jej a pamatuj na vlastní konec.

38:20  In abductione permanet tristitia, et substantia inopis secundum cor ejus.

38:21  Give not up thy heart to sadness, but drive it from thee: and remember the latter end.

38:21  Nezapomeň, že není návratu – mrtvému nepomůžeš, sobě ublížíš.

38:21  Ne dederis in tristitia cor tuum, sed repelle eam a te, et memento novissimorum.

38:22  Forget it not: for there is no returning, and thou shalt do him no good, and shalt hurt thyself.

38:22  Pamatuj na jeho osud, vždyť i tvůj bude takový – on včera, a dnes ty!

38:22  Noli oblivisci, neque enim est conversio : et huic nihil proderis, et teipsum pessimabis.

38:23  Remember my judgment: for thine also shall be so: yesterday for me, and to day for thee.

38:23  Ulož s mrtvým k odpočinku také vzpomínky a už netruchli – jeho duch je pryč.

38:23  Memor esto judicii mei : sic enim erit et tuum : mihi heri, et tibi hodie.

38:24  When the dead is at rest, let his remembrance rest, and comfort him in the departing of his spirit.

38:24  Znalec Písma pro svou moudrost potřebuje klid; kdo nemá moc povinností, dosáhne moudrosti.

38:24  In requie mortui requiescere fac memoriam ejus, et consolare illum in exitu spiritus sui.

38:25  The wisdom of a scribe cometh by his time of leisure: and he that is less in action, shall receive wisdom.

38:25  Jak může dojít moudrosti zemědělec, který se stará jenom o bodec? Jím žene krávy a stará se jen o ně a jediné, o čem mluví, je dobytek;

38:25  Sapientia scribæ in tempore vacuitatis, et qui minoratur actu sapientiam percipiet, qua sapientia replebitur.

38:26  With what wisdom shall he be furnished that holdeth the plough, and that glorieth in the goad, that driveth the oxen therewith, and is occupied in their labours, and his whole talk is about the offspring of bulls?

38:26  své srdce věnuje orání brázdy a spánek obětuje krmení jalovic.

38:26  Qui tenet aratrum, et qui gloriatur in jaculo, stimulo boves agitat, et conversatur in operibus eorum, et enarratio ejus in filiis taurorum.

38:27  He shall give his mind to turn up furrows, and his care is to give the kine fodder.

38:27  Tak i každý umělec a řemeslník, který pracuje dnem i nocí – jako ten, kdo vyrývá rytiny do pečetí a trpělivě vytváří stále nové vzory – své srdce věnuje zpodobení předlohy a spánek obětuje, aby dílo dokončil.

38:27  Cor suum dabit ad versandos sulcos, et vigilia ejus in sagina vaccarum.

38:28  So every craftsman and workmaster that laboureth night and day, he who maketh graven seals, and by his continual diligence varieth the figure: he shall give his mind to the resemblance of the picture, and by his watching shall finish the work.

38:28  Tak i kovář, co stojí u kovadliny a věnuje se práci s železem – oheň a kouř mu stravují tělo, zatímco bojuje s žárem pece, údery kladiva mu ohlušují sluch, zatímco sleduje tvar výkovku – své srdce věnuje dokončení díla a spánek obětuje konečné úpravě.

38:28  Sic omnis faber et architectus, qui noctem tamquam diem transigit : qui sculpit signacula sculptilia, et assiduitas ejus variat picturam : cor suum dabit in similitudinem picturæ, et vigilia sua perficiet opus.

38:29  So doth the smith sitting by the anvil and considering the iron work. The vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh, and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace.

38:29  Tak i hrnčíř, co sedí u svého kruhu a roztáčí ho nohama – stále má starosti o své dílo, přemýšlí, kolik by toho mohl udělat,

38:29  Sic faber ferrarius sedens juxta incudem, et considerans opus ferri : vapor ignis uret carnes ejus, et in calore fornacis concertatur.

38:30  The noise of the hammer is always in his ears, and his eye is upon the pattern of the vessel he maketh.

38:30  rukama dává hlíně tvar a přemáhá ji nohama – své srdce věnuje závěrečné glazuře a spánek obětuje, aby čistil pec.

38:30  Vox mallei innovat aurem ejus, et contra similitudinem vasis oculus ejus.

38:31  He setteth his mind to finish his work, and his watching to polish them to perfection.

38:31  Ti všichni se spoléhají na své ruce a každý je mistrem ve svém řemesle;

38:31  Cor suum dabit in consummationem operum, et vigilia sua ornabit in perfectionem.

38:32  So doth the potter sitting at his work, turning the wheel about with his feet, who is always carefully set to his work, and maketh all his work by number:

38:32  bez nich by nemohlo město rozkvétat, nedalo by se bydlet ani cestovat.

38:32  Sic figulus sedens ad opus suum, convertens pedibus suis rotam, qui in sollicitudine positus est semper propter opus suum, et in numero est omnis operatio ejus.

38:33  He fashioneth the clay with his arm, and boweth down his strength before his feet:

38:33  V městské radě ale nejsou k nalezení, neobsazují přední místa ve shromáždění, na soudném stolci nikdy nesedí, nerozjímají nad zákony a rozsudky.

38:33  In brachio suo formabit lutum, et ante pedes suos curvabit virtutem suam.

38:34  He shall give his mind to finish the glazing, and his watching to make clean the furnace.

38:34  Nevynikají právním vzděláním a nejsou zběhlí v moudrých výrocích. Svět ale stojí právě na nich – když konají svou práci, jako by se modlili!

38:34  Cor suum dabit ut consummet linitionem, et vigilia sua mundabit fornacem.

38:35  All these trust to their hands, and every one is wise in his own art.

38:35  Omnes hi in manibus suis speraverunt, et unusquisque in arte sua sapiens est.

38:36  Without these a city is not built.

38:36  Sine his omnibus non ædificatur civitas,

38:37  And they shall not dwell, nor walk about therein, and they shall not go up into the assembly.

38:37  et non inhabitabunt, nec inambulabunt, et in ecclesiam non transilient.

38:38  Upon the judges' seat they shall not sit, and the ordinance of judgment they shall not understand, neither shall they declare discipline and judgment, and they shall not be found where parables are spoken:

38:38  Super sellam judicis non sedebunt, et testamentum judicii non intelligent, neque palam facient disciplinam et judicium, et in parabolis non invenientur :

38:39  But they shall strengthen the state of the world, and their prayer shall be in the work of their craft, applying their soul, and searching in the law of the most High.

38:39  sed creaturam ævi confirmabunt : et deprecatio illorum in operatione artis, accomodantes animam suam, et conquirentes in lege Altissimi.
