106:1  Give glory to the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

106:1  Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.

106:1  Alleluja. Confitemini Domino, quoniam bonus, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.

106:2  Let them say so that have been redeemed by the Lord, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the enemy: and gathered out of the countries.

106:2  Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord? who can shew forth all his praise?

106:2  Dicant qui redempti sunt a Domino, quos redemit de manu inimici, et de regionibus congregavit eos,

106:3  From the rising and from the setting of the sun, from the north and from the sea.

106:3  Blessed are they that keep judgment, and he that doeth righteousness at all times.

106:3  a solis ortu, et occasu, ab aquilone, et mari.

106:4  They wandered in a wilderness, in a place without water: they found not the way of a city for their habitation.

106:4  Remember me, O Lord, with the favour that thou bearest unto thy people: O visit me with thy salvation;

106:4  Erraverunt in solitudine, in inaquoso ; viam civitatis habitaculi non invenerunt.

106:5  They were hungry and thirsty: their soul fainted in them.

106:5  That I may see the good of thy chosen, that I may rejoice in the gladness of thy nation, that I may glory with thine inheritance.

106:5  Esurientes et sitientes, anima eorum in ipsis defecit.

106:6  And they cried to the Lord in their tribulation: and he delivered them out of their distresses.

106:6  We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly.

106:6  Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur, et de necessitatibus eorum eripuit eos ;

106:7  And he led them into the right way, that they might go to a city of habitation.

106:7  Our fathers understood not thy wonders in Egypt; they remembered not the multitude of thy mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.

106:7  et deduxit eos in viam rectam, ut irent in civitatem habitationis.

106:8  Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.

106:8  Nevertheless he saved them for his name’s sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

106:8  Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.

106:9  For he hath satisfied the empty soul, and hath filled the hungry soul with good things.

106:9  He rebuked the Red sea also, and it was dried up: so he led them through the depths, as through the wilderness.

106:9  Quia satiavit animam inanem, et animam esurientem satiavit bonis.

106:10  Such as sat in darkness and in the shadow of death: bound in want and in iron.

106:10  And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy.

106:10  Sedentes in tenebris et umbra mortis ; vinctos in mendicitate et ferro.

106:11  Because they had exasperated the words of God: and provoked the counsel of the most High:

106:11  And the waters covered their enemies: there was not one of them left.

106:11  Quia exacerbaverunt eloquia Dei, et consilium Altissimi irritaverunt.

106:12  And their heart was humbled with labours: they were weakened, and there was none to help them.

106:12  Then believed they his words; they sang his praise.

106:12  Et humiliatum est in laboribus cor eorum ; infirmati sunt, nec fuit qui adjuvaret.

106:13  Then they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.

106:13  They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel:

106:13  Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur ; et de necessitatibus eorum liberavit eos.

106:14  And he brought them out of darkness, and the shadow of death; and broke their bonds in sunder.

106:14  But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert.

106:14  Et eduxit eos de tenebris et umbra mortis, et vincula eorum dirupit.

106:15  Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.

106:15  And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

106:15  Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.

106:16  Because he hath broken gates of brass, and burst iron bars.

106:16  They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the Lord.

106:16  Quia contrivit portas æreas, et vectes ferreos confregit.

106:17  He took them out of the way of their iniquity: for they were brought low for their injustices.

106:17  The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.

106:17  Suscepit eos de via iniquitatis eorum ; propter injustitias enim suas humiliati sunt.

106:18  Their soul abhorred all manner of meat: and they drew nigh even to the gates of death.

106:18  And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

106:18  Omnem escam abominata est anima eorum, et appropinquaverunt usque ad portas mortis.

106:19  And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he delivered them out of their distresses.

106:19  They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

106:19  Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur, et de necessitatibus eorum liberavit eos.

106:20  He sent his word, and healed them: and delivered them from their destructions.

106:20  Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

106:20  Misit verbum suum, et sanavit eos, et eripuit eos de interitionibus eorum.

106:21  Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him: and his wonderful works to the children of men.

106:21  They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

106:21  Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.

106:22  And let them sacrifice the sacrifice of praise: and declare his works with joy.

106:22  Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

106:22  Et sacrificent sacrificium laudis, et annuntient opera ejus in exsultatione.

106:23  They that go down to the sea in ships, doing business in the great waters:

106:23  Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

106:23  Qui descendunt mare in navibus, facientes operationem in aquis multis :

106:24  These have seen the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.

106:24  Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

106:24  ipsi viderunt opera Domini, et mirabilia ejus in profundo.

106:25  He said the word, and there arose a storm of wind: and the waves thereof were lifted up.

106:25  But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the Lord.

106:25  Dixit, et stetit spiritus procellæ, et exaltati sunt fluctus ejus.

106:26  They mount up to the heavens, and they go down to the depths: their soul pined away with evils.

106:26  Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

106:26  Ascendunt usque ad cælos, et descendunt usque ad abyssos ; anima eorum in malis tabescebat.

106:27  They were troubled, and reeled like a drunken man; and all their wisdom was swallowed up.

106:27  To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

106:27  Turbati sunt, et moti sunt sicut ebrius, et omnis sapientia eorum devorata est.

106:28  And they cried to the Lord in their affliction: and he brought them out of their distresses.

106:28  They joined themselves also unto Baal–peor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

106:28  Et clamaverunt ad Dominum cum tribularentur ; et de necessitatibus eorum eduxit eos.

106:29  And he turned the storm into a breeze: and its waves were still.

106:29  Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

106:29  Et statuit procellam ejus in auram, et siluerunt fluctus ejus.

106:30  And they rejoiced because they were still: and he brought them to the haven which they wished for.

106:30  Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

106:30  Et lætati sunt quia siluerunt ; et deduxit eos in portum voluntatis eorum.

106:31  Let the mercies of the Lord give glory to him, and his wonderful works to the children of men.

106:31  And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

106:31  Confiteantur Domino misericordiæ ejus, et mirabilia ejus filiis hominum.

106:32  And let them exalt him in the church of the people: and praise him in the chair of the ancients.

106:32  They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

106:32  Et exaltent eum in ecclesia plebis, et in cathedra seniorum laudent eum.

106:33  He hath turned rivers into a wilderness: and the sources of waters into dry ground:

106:33  Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

106:33  Posuit flumina in desertum, et exitus aquarum in sitim ;

106:34  A fruitful land into barrenness, for the wickedness of them that dwell therein.

106:34  They did not destroy the nations, concerning whom the Lord commanded them:

106:34  terram fructiferam in salsuginem, a malitia inhabitantium in ea.

106:35  He hath turned a wilderness into pools of waters, and a dry land into water springs.

106:35  But were mingled among the heathen, and learned their works.

106:35  Posuit desertum in stagna aquarum, et terram sine aqua in exitus aquarum.

106:36  And hath placed there the hungry; and they made a city for their habitation.

106:36  And they served their idols: which were a snare unto them.

106:36  Et collocavit illic esurientes, et constituerunt civitatem habitationis :

106:37  And they sowed fields, and planted vineyards: and they yielded fruit of birth.

106:37  Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils,

106:37  et seminaverunt agros et plantaverunt vineas, et fecerunt fructum nativitatis.

106:38  And he blessed them, and they were multiplied exceedingly: and their cattle he suffered not to decrease.

106:38  And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.

106:38  Et benedixit eis, et multiplicati sunt nimis ; et jumenta eorum non minoravit.

106:39  Then they were brought to be few: and they were afflicted through the trouble of evils and sorrow.

106:39  Thus were they defiled with their own works, and went a whoring with their own inventions.

106:39  Et pauci facti sunt et vexati sunt, a tribulatione malorum et dolore.

106:40  Contempt was poured forth upon their princes: and he caused them to wander where there was no passing, and out of the way.

106:40  Therefore was the wrath of the Lord kindled against his people, insomuch that he abhorred his own inheritance.

106:40  Effusa est contemptio super principes : et errare fecit eos in invio, et non in via.

106:41  And he helped the poor out of poverty: and made him families like a flock of sheep.

106:41  And he gave them into the hand of the heathen; and they that hated them ruled over them.

106:41  Et adjuvit pauperem de inopia, et posuit sicut oves familias.

106:42  The just shall see, and shall rejoice, and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

106:42  Their enemies also oppressed them, and they were brought into subjection under their hand.

106:42  Videbunt recti, et lætabuntur ; et omnis iniquitas oppilabit os suum.

106:43  Who is wise, and will keep these things; and will understand the mercies of the Lord?

106:43  Many times did he deliver them; but they provoked him with their counsel, and were brought low for their iniquity.

106:43  Quis sapiens, et custodiet hæc, et intelliget misericordias Domini ?

106:44  Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:

106:45  And he remembered for them his covenant, and repented according to the multitude of his mercies.

106:46  He made them also to be pitied of all those that carried them captives.

106:47  Save us, O Lord our God, and gather us from among the heathen, to give thanks unto thy holy name, and to triumph in thy praise.

106:48  Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting: and let all the people say, Amen. Praise ye the Lord.
