Chapter 27
Matt Worsley 27:1  And as soon as it was morning all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus, how to get Him executed:
Matt Worsley 27:2  so they bound Him and led Him away, and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the Roman governor.
Matt Worsley 27:3  Then Judas, who had betrayed Him, when he saw that He was condemned, being struck with remorse, brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders,
Matt Worsley 27:4  saying, I have sinned, for I have betrayed innocent blood: but they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
Matt Worsley 27:5  And he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
Matt Worsley 27:6  But the chief priests took up the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury of the temple, because it is the price of blood:
Matt Worsley 27:7  so they consulted together, and bought with them the potter's field for a burying-ground for strangers:
Matt Worsley 27:8  and therefore that field is called the field of blood to this day.
Matt Worsley 27:9  Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was estimated, on whom the children of Israel set the price,
Matt Worsley 27:10  and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.
Matt Worsley 27:11  And Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked Him, saying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And Jesus answered him, It is as thou sayest.
Matt Worsley 27:12  And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, He answered nothing.
Matt Worsley 27:13  Then saith Pilate to Him, Dost thou not hear how many things they witness against thee?
Matt Worsley 27:14  but He answered him not one word: so that the governor was much astonished.
Matt Worsley 27:15  Now the governor used at the feast to release a prisoner to the people, whomsoever they desired:
Matt Worsley 27:16  and they had then a notorious malefactor named Barabbas.
Matt Worsley 27:17  Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you?
Matt Worsley 27:18  Barabbas, or Jesus, who is called Christ? for he knew that out of envy they had delivered Him up.
Matt Worsley 27:19  (And while he was sitting on the tribunal, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that righteous man: for I have suffered much in a dream to day on his account.)
Matt Worsley 27:20  But the chief priests and elders persuaded the common people to ask for Barabbas, and so to destroy Jesus.
Matt Worsley 27:21  And the governor said to them, Which of the two would you have me release to you? and they said, Barabbas.
Matt Worsley 27:22  What shall I do then, saith Pilate, with Jesus, who is called Christ? They all cried out, Let Him be crucified.
Matt Worsley 27:23  And the governor said, Why, what evil hath He done? but they cried out the more, saying, Let Him be crucified.
Matt Worsley 27:24  Pilate seeing that he prevailed nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just man, look ye to it:
Matt Worsley 27:25  and all the people answered and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
Matt Worsley 27:26  Then he released to them Barabbas: but he ordered Jesus to be scourged, and delivered Him to be crucified.
Matt Worsley 27:27  Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the hall, and gathered the whole band about Him:
Matt Worsley 27:28  and when they had stript Him, they covered Him with a scarlet robe;
Matt Worsley 27:29  and having platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they bowed the knee before Him in derision, saying, Hail king of the Jews:
Matt Worsley 27:30  and they spit upon Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head.
Matt Worsley 27:31  And after they had thus abused Him, they took off the scarlet robe from Him, and put on Him his own clothes, and led Him away to be crucified.
Matt Worsley 27:32  And as they were going along they met with a man of Cyrene, whose name was Simon; and forced him to carry the cross.
Matt Worsley 27:33  And when they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say,
Matt Worsley 27:34  the place of a skull, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: but when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
Matt Worsley 27:35  And after they had fixed Him to the cross, they parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.
Matt Worsley 27:36  And they sat down and watched Him there: and put up over his head his accusation in writing,
Matt Worsley 27:38  And there were two thieves crucified with Him: one on his right hand, and one on the left.
Matt Worsley 27:39  And they that passed by reviled Him, shaking their heads,
Matt Worsley 27:40  and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it again in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross.
Matt Worsley 27:41  And in like manner the chief priests also insulting Him, with the scribes and elders,
Matt Worsley 27:42  said, He saved others, himself He cannot save: if He be the king of Israel, let Him come down now from the cross, and we will believe Him:
Matt Worsley 27:43  He trusted in God, let Him deliver Him now, if He will own Him; for He said, I am the Son of God.
Matt Worsley 27:44  And one of the thieves also, that were crucified with Him, cast the same reproach upon Him.
Matt Worsley 27:45  Now from the sixth hour to the ninth there was darkness over all the land.
Matt Worsley 27:46  And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani," that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Matt Worsley 27:47  And some of them that stood by, hearing Him, said, He calls upon Elias:
Matt Worsley 27:48  and immediately one of them ran, and took a spunge, and having filled it with vinegar put it upon a reed, and offered it Him to drink;
Matt Worsley 27:49  the rest said, Stay, let us see whether Elias will come and save Him.
Matt Worsley 27:50  But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice; and then gave up the ghost.
Matt Worsley 27:51  And behold the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom, and the earth was shaken, and the rocks were split:
Matt Worsley 27:52  and the graves opened, and many bodies of departed saints arose,
Matt Worsley 27:53  and coming out of the graves, after his resurrection, went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Matt Worsley 27:54  And when the centurion, and they that were with him guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake, and what was done, they were sore afraid, and said, This was indeed the Son of God.
Matt Worsley 27:55  And several women were there looking on at a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministring unto Him:
Matt Worsley 27:56  among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee's children.
Matt Worsley 27:57  And in the evening, there came a rich man of Arimathea, whose name was Joseph, who also himself was a disciple of Jesus, and went to Pilate,
Matt Worsley 27:58  and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered the body to be delivered to him;
Matt Worsley 27:59  and Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,
Matt Worsley 27:60  and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had had cut out in the rock; and when he had rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, he went away:
Matt Worsley 27:61  but there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary sitting over against the sepulchre.
Matt Worsley 27:62  Now the next day after the preparation, the chief priests and pharisees went together to Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that this impostor,
Matt Worsley 27:63  when He was alive, said, After three days I will rise again:
Matt Worsley 27:64  order therefore the sepulchre to be secured till the third day, least his disciples should come and steal Him away, and tell the people, He is risen from the dead: and so the last error will be worse than the first.
Matt Worsley 27:65  But Pilate said to them, Ye have a guard of your own, go and make it as secure as ye will.
Matt Worsley 27:66  So they went and made the sepulchre safe, sealing the stone, and setting a guard to watch it.
