2:1  In those days arose Mathathias, the son of John, the son of Simeon, a priest of the sons of Joarib, from Jerusalem, and he abode in the mountain of Modin:

2:1  Matatiáš, syn Jana, syna Šimonova, kněz ze synů Joaribových, v těch dnech odešel z Jeruzaléma a usadil se v Modiinu.

2:1  In diebus illis surrexit Mathathias filius Joannis filii Simeonis, sacerdos ex filiis Joarib, ab Jerusalem, et consedit in monte Modin :

2:2  And he had five sons: John, who was surnamed Gaddis:

2:2  Měl pět synů: Jana (přezdívaného Gadi),

2:2  et habebat filios quinque, Joannem, qui cognominabatur Gaddis :

2:3  And Simon, who was surnamed Thasi;

2:3  Šimona (zvaného Thasi),

2:3  et Simonem, qui cognominabatur Thasi :

2:4  And Judas, who was called Machabeus;

2:4  Judu (zvaného Makabejský),

2:4  et Judam, qui vocabatur Machabæus :

2:5  And Eleazar, who was surnamed Abaron; and Jonathan, who was surnamed Apphus.

2:5  Eleazara (zvaného Avaran) a Jonatana (zvaného Apfus).

2:5  et Eleazarum, qui cognominabatur Abaron : et Jonathan, qui cognominabatur Apphus :

2:6  These saw the evils that were done in the people of Juda, and in Jerusalem.

2:6  Když viděl, k jakým rouháním dochází v Judsku a v Jeruzalémě,

2:6  hi viderunt mala, quæ fiebant in populo Juda, et in Jerusalem.

2:7  And Mathathias said: Woe is me, wherefore was I born to see the ruin of my people, and the ruin of the holy city, and to dwell there, when it is given into the hands of the enemies?

2:7  zvolal: „Běda mi – proč jsem se narodil?! Abych přihlížel zkáze svého lidu a zkáze svatého města? Musím tu jen sedět, když město padlo do rukou nepřátel a svatyni ovládli cizáci?

2:7  Et dixit Mathathias : Væ mihi ! ut quid natus sum videre contritionem populi mei, et contritionem civitatis sanctæ, et sedere illic, cum datur in manibus inimicorum ?

2:8  The holy places are come into the hands of strangers her temple is become as a man without honour.

2:8  Jeho chrám skončil jako muž beze cti,

2:8  Sancta in manu extraneorum facta sunt : templum ejus sicut homo ignobilis.

2:9  The vessels of her glory are carried away captive; her old men are murdered in the streets, and her young men are fallen by the sword of the enemies.

2:9  jeho skvostné nářadí padlo za kořist, jeho nemluvňata pozabíjena v ulicích a jeho mládenci padli nepřátelskou čepelí.

2:9  Vasa gloriæ ejus captiva abducta sunt : trucidati sunt senes ejus in plateis, et juvenes ejus ceciderunt in gladio inimicorum.

2:10  What nation hath not inherited her kingdom, and gotten of her spoils?

2:10  Který národ neuchvátil část jeho království a nezmocnil se jeho kořisti?

2:10  Quæ gens non hæreditavit regnum ejus et non obtinuit spolia ejus ?

2:11  All her ornaments are taken away. She that was free is made a slave.

2:11  Jeruzalém byl obrán o všechny své ozdoby a místo svobody se ocitl v otroctví.

2:11  Omnis compositio ejus ablata est. Quæ erat libera, facta est ancilla.

2:12  And behold our sanctuary, and our beauty, and our glory is laid waste, and the Gentiles have defiled them.

2:12  Hle, naše svatá místa – naše krása a sláva – byla zničena! Pohané je znesvětili,

2:12  Et ecce sancta nostra, et pulchritudo nostra, et claritas nostra desolata est, et coinquinaverunt ea gentes.

2:13  To what end then should we live any longer?

2:13  nač máme ještě žít?!“

2:13  Quo ergo nobis adhuc vivere ?

2:14  And Mathathias and his sons rent their garments, and they covered themselves with haircloth, and made great lamentation.

2:14  Matatiáš i jeho synové roztrhli svá roucha, oblékli se do pytloviny a dali se do velikého nářku.

2:14  Et scidit vestimenta sua Mathathias, et filii ejus : et operuerunt se ciliciis, et planxerunt valde.

2:15  And they that were sent from king Antiochus, came thither, to compel them that were fled into the city of Modin, to sacrifice, and to burn incense, and to depart from the law of God.

2:15  Královi lidé, kteří nutili k odpadlictví, přišli také do města Modiin, aby místní přinutili obětovat.

2:15  Et venerunt illuc qui missi erant a rege Antiocho, ut cogerent eos, qui confugerant in civitatem Modin, immolare, et accendere thura, et a lege Dei discedere.

2:16  And many of the people of Israel consented and came to them: but Mathathias and his sons stood firm.

2:16  Mnozí Izraelci se k nim přidali, ale Matatiáš a jeho synové se drželi pospolu.

2:16  Et multi de populo Israël consentientes accesserunt ad eos : sed Mathathias et filii ejus constanter steterunt.

2:17  And they that were sent from Antiochus, answering, said to Mathathias: Thou art a ruler, and an honourable, and great man in this city, and adorned with sons, and brethren.

2:17  Královi lidé se obrátili na Matatiáše a řekli: „Jsi vážený a významný představitel tohoto města a máš podporu svých synů i bratrů.

2:17  Et respondentes qui missi erant ab Antiocho, dixerunt Mathathiæ : Princeps, et clarissimus et magnus es in hac civitate, et ornatus filiis et fratribus :

2:18  Therefore, come thou first, and obey the king's commandment, as all nations have done, and the men of Juda, and they that remain in Jerusalem: and thou, and thy sons shall be in the number of the king's friends, and enriched with gold, and silver, and many presents.

2:18  Pojď tedy hned jako první a splň královo nařízení, jak to udělaly všechny národy i mužové z Judska a ti, co zůstali v Jeruzalémě! Pak budeš i se svými syny patřit mezi královy přátele a budeš i se svými syny poctěn zlatem, stříbrem a mnoha dary.“

2:18  ergo accede prior, et fac jussum regis, sicut fecerunt omnes gentes, et viri Juda, et qui remanserunt in Jerusalem : et eris tu, et filii tui, inter amicos regis, et amplificatus auro, et argento, et muneribus multis.

2:19  Then Mathathias answered, and said with a loud voice: Although all nations obey king Antiochus, so as to depart every man from the service of the law of his fathers, and consent to his commandments:

2:19  Matatiáš jim odpověděl zvučným hlasem: „I když krále poslouchají všechny národy v říši, i když každý odpadl od náboženství svých otců a dal přednost jeho příkazům,

2:19  Et respondit Mathathias, et dixit magna voce : Etsi omnes gentes regi Antiocho obediunt, ut discedat unusquisque a servitute legis patrum suorum, et consentiat mandatis ejus :

2:20  I and my sons, and my brethren will obey the law of our fathers.

2:20  já a mí synové a bratři budeme žít podle smlouvy našich otců.

2:20  ego et filii mei, et fratres mei, obediemus legi patrum nostrorum :

2:21  God be merciful unto us: it is not profitable for us to forsake the law, and the justices of God:

2:21  V žádném případě neopustíme Zákon a ustanovení!

2:21  propitius sit nobis Deus : non est nobis utile relinquere legem, et justitias Dei :

2:22  We will not hearken to the words of king Antiochus, neither will we sacrifice and transgress the commandments of our law, to go another way.

2:22  Královy rozkazy neuposlechneme a od svého náboženství se neuchýlíme napravo ani nalevo.“

2:22  non audiemus verba regis Antiochi, nec sacrificabimus transgredientes legis nostræ mandata, ut eamus altera via.

2:23  Now as he left off speaking these words, there came a certain Jew in the sight of all to sacrifice to the idols upon the altar in the city of Modin, according to the king's commandment.

2:23  Sotva to dořekl, jeden Žid před očima všech přistoupil, aby podle králova nařízení obětoval na modiinském oltáři.

2:23  Et ut cessavit loqui verba hæc, accessit quidam Judæus in omnium oculis sacrificare idolis super aram in civitate Modin, secundum jussum regis :

2:24  And Mathathias saw, and was grieved, and his reins trembled, and his wrath was kindled according to the judgment of the law, and running upon him he slew him upon the altar:

2:24  Jak to Matatiáš uviděl, rozhorlil se a pohnut v nitru dal průchod spravedlivému hněvu: přiskočil k němu a na tom oltáři ho podřízl.

2:24  et vidit Mathathias, et doluit, et contremuerunt renes ejus, et accensus est furor ejus secundum judicium legis, et insiliens trucidavit eum super aram :

2:25  Moreover the man whom king Antiochus had sent, who compelled them to sacrifice, he slew at the same time, and pulled down the altar,

2:25  Zároveň zabil králova posla, který je nutil obětovat, a zbořil ten oltář.

2:25  sed et virum, quem rex Antiochus miserat, qui cogebat immolare, occidit in ipso tempore, et aram destruxit :

2:26  And shewed zeal for the law, as Phinees did by Zamri, the son of Salomi.

2:26  Rozhorlil se pro Zákon jako kdysi Pinchas proti Zimrimu, synu Salovu.

2:26  et zelatus est legem, sicut fecit Phinees Zamri filio Salomi.

2:27  And Mathathias cried out in the city with a loud voice, saying: Every one that hath zeal for the law, and maintaineth the testament, let him follow me.

2:27  Matatiáš začal ve městě hlasitě provolávat: „Každý, kdo horlí pro Zákon a zůstává ve Smlouvě, ať jde za mnou!“

2:27  Et exclamavit Mathathias voce magna in civitate, dicens : Omnis qui zelum habet legis, statuens testamentum, exeat post me.

2:28  So he and his sons fled into the mountains, and left all that they had in the city.

2:28  On i jeho synové pak utekli do hor. Všechno, co měli, nechali ve městě.

2:28  Et fugit ipse, et filii ejus in montes, et reliquerunt quæcumque habebant in civitate.

2:29  Then many that sought after judgment, and justice, went down into the desert

2:29  Mnozí, kdo hledali spravedlnost a právo, tehdy odešli do pustiny a usadili se tam

2:29  Tunc descenderunt multi quærentes judicium, et justitiam, in desertum :

2:30  And they abode there, they and their children, and their wives, and their cattle: because afflictions increased upon them.

2:30  i se svými dětmi, ženami a dobytkem, protože na ně všechno to zlo těžce doléhalo.

2:30  et sederunt ibi ipsi, et filii eorum, et mulieres eorum, et pecora eorum : quoniam inundaverunt super eos mala.

2:31  And it was told to the king's men, and to the army that was in Jerusalem, in the city of David, that certain men, who had broken the king's commandment, were gone away into the secret places in the wilderness, and that many were gone after them.

2:31  Královým mužům a jednotkám, které byly v Jeruzalémě, ve Městě Davidově, bylo oznámeno, že lidé, kteří mařili výkon králova rozhodnutí, se uchýlili do úkrytů v pustině.

2:31  Et renuntiatum est viris regis, et exercitui qui erat in Jerusalem civitate David, quoniam discessissent viri quidam, qui dissipaverunt mandatum regis, in loca occulta in deserto, et abiissent post illos multi.

2:32  And forthwith they went out towards them, and made war against them on the sabbath day.

2:32  Vyrazilo za nimi proto množství vojáků, dostihli je a utábořili se proti nim. V sobotu se proti nim sešikovali k boji

2:32  Et statim perrexerunt ad eos, et constituerunt adversus eos prælium in die sabbatorum,

2:33  And they said to them: Do you still resist? come forth, and do according to the edict of king Antiochus, and you shall live.

2:33  a volali na ně: „Už dost! Odejděte odsud, řiďte se královým nařízením a zůstanete naživu.“

2:33  et dixerunt ad eos : Resistitis et nunc adhuc ? exite, et facite secundum verbum regis Antiochi, et vivetis.

2:34  And they said: We will not come forth, neither will we obey the king's edict, to profane the sabbath day.

2:34  „Neodejdeme,“ odpověděli. „Královým nařízením se řídit nebudeme a sobotu neznesvětíme.“

2:34  Et dixerunt : Non exibimus, neque faciemus verbum regis, ut polluamus diem sabbatorum.

2:35  And they made haste to give them battle.

2:35  Vojáci je tedy ihned napadli,

2:35  Et concitaverunt adversus eos prælium.

2:36  But they answered them not, neither did they cast a stone at them, nor stopped up the secret places,

2:36  oni však na to neodpověděli. Nehodili po nich ani kamenem, ani nezatarasili své úkryty,

2:36  Et non responderunt eis, nec lapidem miserunt in eos, nec oppilaverunt loca occulta,

2:37  Saying: Let us all die in our innocency: and heaven and earth shall be witnesses for us, that you put us to death wrongfully.

2:37  ale prohlásili: „Raději všichni zemřeme v nevinnosti. Nebe a země jsou nám svědky, že nás zabíjíte nespravedlivě!“

2:37  dicentes : Moriamur omnes in simplicitate nostra : et testes erunt super nos cælum et terra, quod injuste perditis nos.

2:38  So they gave them battle on the sabbath: and they were slain, with their wives, and their children, and their cattle, to the number of a thousand persons.

2:38  Zaútočili na ně v sobotu a oni zemřeli i se svými ženami, dětmi a dobytkem – na tisíc lidských životů.

2:38  Et intulerunt illis bellum sabbatis : et mortui sunt ipsi, et uxores eorum, et filii eorum, et pecora eorum usque ad mille animas hominum.

2:39  And Mathathias and his friends heard of it, and they mourned for them exceedingly.

2:39  Když se to dozvěděl Matatiáš a jeho synové, velice nad nimi truchlili.

2:39  Et cognovit Mathathias et amici ejus, et luctum habuerunt super eos valde.

2:40  And every man said to his neighbour: If we shall all do as our brethren have done, and not fight against the heathens for our lives, and our justifications, they will now quickly root us out of the earth.

2:40  Potom si řekli: „Pokud se všichni zachováme tak jako naši bratři, pokud nebudeme proti pohanům bojovat za svůj život a své zákony, brzy nás ze země vyhladí.“

2:40  Et dixit vir proximo suo : Si omnes fecerimus sicut fratres nostri fecerunt, et non pugnaverimus adversus gentes pro animabus nostris et justificationibus nostris, nunc citius disperdent nos a terra.

2:41  And they determined in that day, saying: Whosoever shall come up against us to fight on the sabbath day, we will fight against him: and we will not all die, as our brethren that were slain in the secret places.

2:41  A tak se onoho dne usnesli: „Napadne-li nás někdo v sobotní den, budeme proti němu bojovat, abychom všichni nezemřeli, jako zemřeli naši bratři ve svých úkrytech.“

2:41  Et cogitaverunt in die illa, dicentes : Omnis homo, quicumque venerit ad nos in bello die sabbatorum, pugnemus adversus eum : et non moriemur omnes, sicut mortui sunt fratres nostri in occultis.

2:42  Then was assembled to them the congregation of the Assideans, the stoutest of Israel, every one that had a good will for the law.

2:42  Tehdy se k nim přidala skupina chasidů, udatných bojovníků z Izraele, samých oddaných stoupenců Zákona.

2:42  Tunc congregata est ad eos synagoga Assidæorum fortis viribus ex Israël, omnis voluntarius in lege :

2:43  And all they that fled from the evils, joined themselves to them, and were a support to them.

2:43  Připojili se k nim také všichni, kdo byli na útěku před tím zlem, a posílili jejich řady.

2:43  et omnes, qui fugiebant a malis, additi sunt ad eos, et facti sunt illis ad firmamentum.

2:44  And they gathered an army, and slew the sinners in their wrath, and the wicked men in their indignation: and the rest fled to the nations for safety.

2:44  Postavili tedy vojsko a pobili hříšníky ve svém hněvu a bezbožníky ve svém rozlícení. Ti, kdo přežili, utekli, aby se zachránili u pohanů.

2:44  Et collegerunt exercitum, et percusserunt peccatores in ira sua, et viros iniquos in indignatione sua : et ceteri fugerunt ad nationes, ut evaderent.

2:45  And Mathathias and his friends went round about, and they threw down the altars:

2:45  Matatiáš a jeho druhové pak obcházeli kolem, bořili všechny oltáře,

2:45  Et circuivit Mathathias et amici ejus, et destruxerunt aras :

2:46  And they circumcised all the children whom they found in the confines of Israel that were uncircumcised: and they did valiantly.

2:46  násilím obřezávali neobřezané chlapce, které na území Izraele našli,

2:46  et circumciderunt pueros incircumcisos quotquot invenerunt in finibus Israël : et in fortitudine.

2:47  And they pursued after the children of pride, and the work prospered in their hands:

2:47  a vyháněli nadutce. Dílo se jim dařilo.

2:47  Et persecuti sunt filios superbiæ, et prosperatum est opus in manibus eorum :

2:48  And they recovered the law out of the hands of the nations, and out of the hands of the kings: and they yielded not the horn to the sinner.

2:48  Uchránili Zákon před rukama pohanů a králů a nenechali hříšníka zvítězit.

2:48  et obtinuerunt legem de manibus gentium, et de manibus regum, et non dederunt cornu peccatori.

2:49  Now the days drew near that Mathathias should die, and he said to his sons: Now hath pride and chastisement gotten strength, and the time of destruction, and the wrath of indignation:

2:49  Když se přiblížil den jeho smrti, promluvil Matatiáš ke svým synům: „Dnes vládne zpupnost a výsměch; je čas zmaru a zuřivého hněvu.

2:49  Et appropinquaverunt dies Mathathiæ moriendi, et dixit filiis suis : Nunc confortata est superbia, et castigatio, et tempus eversionis, et ira indignationis.

2:50  Now, therefore, O my sons, be ye zealous for the law, and give your lives for the covenant of your fathers.

2:50  Nuže, chlapci, rozhorlete se pro Zákon a položte životy za smlouvu našich otců!

2:50  Nunc ergo, o filii, æmulatores estote legis, et date animas vestras pro testamento patrum vestrorum,

2:51  And call to remembrance the works of the fathers, which they have done in their generations: and you shall receive great glory, and an everlasting name.

2:51  Vzpomeňte si na skutky otců, které vykonali za svých časů, a přejte si sami velikou slávu a věčné jméno.

2:51  et mementote operum patrum, quæ fecerunt in generationibus suis : et accipietis gloriam magnam, et nomen æternum.

2:52  Was not Abraham found faithful in temptation, and it was reputed to him unto justice?

2:52  Neprokázal snad Abraham věrnost ve zkoušce a nebylo mu to uznáno za spravedlnost?

2:52  Abraham nonne in tentatione inventus est fidelis, et reputatum est ei ad justitiam ?

2:53  Joseph, in the time of his distress, kept the commandment, and he was made lord of Egypt.

2:53  Josef zachoval přikázání v čase svého soužení a stal se pánem Egypta.

2:53  Joseph in tempore angustiæ suæ custodivit mandatum, et factus est dominus Ægypti.

2:54  Phinees, our father, by being fervent in the zeal of God, received the covenant of an everlasting priesthood.

2:54  Náš otec Pinchas za svou velikou horlivost získal smlouvu věčného kněžství.

2:54  Phinees pater noster, zelando zelum Dei, accepit testamentum sacerdotii æterni.

2:55  Jesus, whilst he fulfilled the word, was made ruler in Israel.

2:55  Jozue splnil rozkaz a stal se soudcem Izraele.

2:55  Jesus dum implevit verbum, factus est dux in Israël.

2:56  Caleb, for bearing witness before the congregation, received an inheritance.

2:56  Káleb vydal svědectví před shromážděním a získal zemi za dědictví.

2:56  Caleb dum testificatur in ecclesia, accepit hæreditatem.

2:57  David, by his mercy, obtained the throne of an everlasting kingdom.

2:57  David za svou zbožnost získal královský trůn do věčného dědictví.

2:57  David in sua misericordia consecutus est sedem regni in sæcula.

2:58  Elias, while he is full of zeal for the law, was taken up into heaven.

2:58  Eliáš byl za svou velkou horlivost pro Zákon vzat do nebe.

2:58  Elias, dum zelat zelum legis, receptus est in cælum.

2:59  Ananias and Azarias and Misael, by believing, were delivered out of the flame.

2:59  Chananiáš, Azariáš a Mišael byli pro svou víru zachráněni z plamenů.

2:59  Ananias et Azarias et Misaël credentes, liberati sunt de flamma.

2:60  Daniel, in his innocency, was delivered out of the mouth of the lions.

2:60  Daniel byl pro svou nevinnost vysvobozen ze lvích tlam.

2:60  Daniel in sua simplicitate liberatus est de ore leonum.

2:61  And thus consider, through all generations: that none that trust in him, fail in strength.

2:61  Vězte, že kdokoli ve všech těch pokoleních spoléhal na Boha, nikdy nepadl.

2:61  Et ita cogitate per generationem et generationem : quia omnes qui sperant in eum, non infirmantur.

2:62  And fear not the words of a sinful man, for his glory is dung and worms:

2:62  Nelekejte se řečí hříšníka, protože jeho sláva skončí v hnoji a červech.

2:62  Et a verbis viri peccatoris ne timueritis, quia gloria ejus stercus et vermis est :

2:63  Today he is lifted up, and tomorrow he shall not be found, because he is returned into his earth and his thought is come to nothing.

2:63  Dnes se naparuje, zítra se ale po něm slehne zem; obrátí se v prach a z jeho plánů nic nezbude.

2:63  hodie extollitur, et cras non invenietur : quia conversus est in terram suam, et cogitatio ejus periit.

2:64  You, therefore, my sons, take courage, and behave manfully in the law: for by it you shall be glorious.

2:64  Vy, chlapci, ale buďte stateční a silní v Zákoně, neboť skrze něj dosáhnete slávy!

2:64  Vos ergo filii, confortamini, et viriliter agite in lege : quia in ipsa gloriosi eritis.

2:65  And behold, I know that your brother Simon is a man of counsel: give ear to him always, and he shall be a father to you.

2:65  Zde je váš bratr Šimon – vím, že je to rozvážný muž. Vždy ho poslouchejte, on vám bude místo otce.

2:65  Et ecce Simon frater vester, scio quod vir consilii est : ipsum audite semper, et ipse erit vobis pater.

2:66  And Judas Machabeus, who is valiant and strong from his youth up, let him be the leader of your army, and he shall manage the war of the people.

2:66  A Juda Makabejský, udatný bojovník už od mládí, bude vaším vojevůdcem a povede boj proti pohanům.

2:66  Et Judas Machabæus, fortis viribus a juventute sua, sit vobis princeps militiæ, et ipse aget bellum populi.

2:67  And you shall take to you all that observe the law: and revenge ye the wrong of your people.

2:67  Shromážděte k sobě všechny, kdo zachovávají Zákon, a vykonejte pomstu za svůj lid.

2:67  Et adducetis ad vos omnes factores legis : et vindicate vindictam populi vestri.

2:68  Render to the Gentiles their reward, and take heed to the precepts of the law.

2:68  Dejte pohanům plnou odplatu a držte se předpisů Zákona.“

2:68  Retribuite retributionem gentibus, et intendite in præceptum legis.

2:69  And he blessed them, and was joined to his fathers.

2:69  Pak jim požehnal a byl připojen ke svým otcům.

2:69  Et benedixit eos, et appositus est ad patres suos.

2:70  And he died in the hundred and forty-sixth year: and he was buried by his sons in the sepulchres of his fathers, in Modin, and all Israel mourned for him with great mourning.

2:70  Zemřel v roce 146. Byl pohřben do hrobu svých otců v Modiinu a celý Izrael ho oplakával s hlubokým zármutkem.

2:70  Et defunctus est anno centesimo et quadragesimo sexto : et sepultus est a filiis suis in sepulchris patrum suorum in Modin, et planxerunt eum omnis Israël planctu magno.
