Chapter 1
I Jo | Murdock | 1:1 | WE announce to you that, which was from the beginning, which we have heard, and have seen with our eyes, looked upon, and handled with our hands, that which is the word of life.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:2 | And the life was manifested, and we have seen and do testify and announce to you, the life which is eternal; which was with the Father, and was revealed to us.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:3 | And what we have seen and heard, we make known to you also, that ye may have fellowship with us; and our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus the Messiah.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:5 | And this is the announcement, which we have heard from him and declare to you, that God is light, and no darkness at all is in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:6 | And if we say that we have fellowship with him, and we walk in the darkness, we are liars, and walk not in the truth.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:7 | But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with each other and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all our sins.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:8 | And if we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
I Jo | Murdock | 1:9 | But if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all our iniquity.
Chapter 2
I Jo | Murdock | 2:1 | My children, these things I write to you, that ye sin not. But if any one should sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus the Messiah, the righteous.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:2 | For he is himself the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for all the world.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:4 | For he that saith, I know him, and doth not keep his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:5 | But he that keepeth his word, in him is the love of God truly completed: for by this we know that we are in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:7 | My beloved, I write no new commandment to you, but the old commandment which ye had from the beginning; and the old commandment is the word, which ye have heard.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:8 | Again, a new commandment I write to you, which is true in him and in you; because the darkness hath passed away, and the true light beginneth to appear.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:9 | Whoever therefore shall say that he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness until now.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:11 | But he that hateth his brother, is in darkness, and walketh in darkness; and he knoweth not whither he goeth, because the darkness hath blinded his eyes.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:12 | I write to you, ye children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:13 | I write to you, ye fathers, because ye have known him who existed from the beginning. I write to you, ye young men, because ye have vanquished the evil one.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:14 |
I have written to you, ye little ones, because ye have known the Father. I have written to you, ye fathers, because ye have known him who
I Jo | Murdock | 2:15 | Love not the world, nor any thing in it; for whoever loveth the world, hath not the love of the Father in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:16 | For all that is in the world, is, the lust of the body, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of the world; which are not from the Father, but from the world itself.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:17 |
And the world is passing away,
I Jo | Murdock | 2:18 | My children, it is the latter time; and as ye have heard that a false Messiah was to arise, so there are now many false Messiahs; and from this we know that it is the latter time.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:19 | From us they went out, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us: but they went out from us, that so it might be known, that they were not of us.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:21 | I have not written to you, because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and because no falsehood is of the truth.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:22 | Who is false, but he that denieth that Jesus is the Messiah? And that person is a false Messiah. He that denieth the Father, denieth also the Son.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:23 | And he that denieth the Son, also believeth not the Father. He that confesseth the Son, confesseth also the Father.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:24 | And what ye heard from the first, let that remain with you. For if that, which ye heard from the first, remaineth with you, ye also will remain in the Father and in the Son.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:27 | And ye also, if the unction which ye have received from him remaineth in you, need not that any one should teach you; but as that unction is from God, it teacheth you all things; and it is true, and no falsehood is in it. And as it hath taught you, remain ye in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 2:28 | And now, my children, remain ye in him; that so, when he shall be manifested, we may not be ashamed before him, but may have an open countenance at his coming.
Chapter 3
I Jo | Murdock | 3:1 |
And ye see, how great is the love of the Father towards us, who hath called us sons, and made us
I Jo | Murdock | 3:2 | My beloved, now are we the sons of God; and hitherto, it hath not appeared what we are to be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be in his likeness, and we shall see him as he is.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:6 | And every one that abideth in him, sinneth not: and every one that sinneth, hath not seen him, nor hath known him.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:7 | My children, let no one deceive you: he that doeth righteousness, is righteous, as the Messiah also is righteous.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:8 | And he that committeth sin, is of Satan; because Satan was a sinner from the beginning: and for this cause, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of Satan.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:9 | Every one that is born of God, doth not practise sin; because his seed is in him, and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:10 | By this are the children of God discriminated from the children of Satan. Every one that practiseth not righteousness, and that loveth not his brother, is not of God:
I Jo | Murdock | 3:11 | because this is the commandment, which ye heard from the beginning, that ye should love one another.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:12 | Not like Cain, who was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And why did he slay him, but because his own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous?
I Jo | Murdock | 3:14 | We know that we have turned from death unto life, by this, that we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother, remaineth in death.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:15 | For every one that hateth his brother, is a man-slayer; and ye know, that no man-slayer can have eternal life abiding in him.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:16 | By this we know his love towards us, because he gave up his life for us: and we also ought to give up our lives for our brethren.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:17 | But whoever hath worldly possessions, and seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his bowels from him, how is the love of God in him?
I Jo | Murdock | 3:18 | My children, let us not love one another in words and in tongue, but in acts and in truth.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:19 | And by this, we recognize that we are of the truth; and, before he shall come, we make our hearts confident.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:20 | But if our heart condemneth us, how much greater is God than our heart, and knowing all things?
I Jo | Murdock | 3:22 | And whatever we ask, we receive from him; because we keep his commandments, and do acceptable things before him.
I Jo | Murdock | 3:23 | And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus the Messiah, and that we love one another as he hath commanded us.
Chapter 4
I Jo | Murdock | 4:1 | My beloved, believe not all spirits; but discriminate among spirits, whether they are of God: for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:2 | By this the Spirit of God is known, every spirit that confesseth that Jesus the Messiah hath come in the flesh, is of God.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:3 | And every spirit which confesseth not that Jesus the Messiah hath come in the flesh, is not of God; but he is of the false Messiah, of whom ye have heard that he cometh, and now is he already in the world.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:4 | But ye children, are of God; and ye have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you, than he who is in the world.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:5 | And they are of the world: therefore they speak from the world, and the world heareth them.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:6 | But we are of God; and he that knoweth God, heareth us; and he that is not of God, heareth us not. By this, we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:7 | My beloved, let us love one another: because love is from God; and whoever loveth, is born of God and knoweth God.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:9 | By this was the love of God towards us made known, because God sent his only-begotten Son into the world, that we by him might live.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:10 | In this is love; it was not that we loved God, but that God loved us, and sent his Son a propitiation for our sins.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:12 | No one hath ever seen God; but if we love one another, God abideth in us, and his love is perfected in us.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:13 | And by this we know, that we abide in him and that he abideth in us, because he hath given of his Spirit to us.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:14 | And we have seen, and do testify, that the Father hath sent his Son, a Redeemer for the world.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:15 | Whoever confesseth Jesus to be the Son of God, God abideth in him, and he abideth in God.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:16 | And we have believed and known the love, which God hath towards us: for God is love, and whoever abideth in love, abideth in God.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:17 | And hereby is his love perfected with us; that we may have open countenances in the day of judgment; because as he was, so also are we in this world.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:18 | In love there is no fear; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear existeth in peril, and he that feareth is not perfected in love.
I Jo | Murdock | 4:20 | And if any one shall say, I love God, and yet hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother who is visible, how can he love God who is invisible?
Chapter 5
I Jo | Murdock | 5:1 | Whoever believeth that Jesus is the Messiah, is born of God. And whoever loveth the begetter, loveth him also that is begotten of him.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:2 | And by this we know, that we love the children of God, when we love God, and follow his commandments.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:3 | For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not burdensome.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:4 | Because, whoever is born of God, overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, our faith.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:5 | For who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
I Jo | Murdock | 5:6 | This is he who came by the water and the blood. Jesus the Messiah; not by the water only, but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit testifieth; because the Spirit is truth.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:7 |
| |
I Jo | Murdock | 5:8 | And there are three witnesses, the Spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three are in union.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:9 | If we receive the testimony of men, how much greater is the testimony of God? And this is the testimony of God, which he hath testified concerning his Son.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:10 | Whoever believeth in the Son of God, hath this testimony in himself. And whoever believeth not God, hath made him a liar, by not believing the testimony which God hath testified concerning his Son.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:11 | And this is the testimony, that God hath given to us life eternal, and this life is in his Son.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:12 | Every one that taketh hold of the Son, taketh hold of life; and every one that taketh not hold of the Son, hath not life.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:13 | These things have I written to you, that ye may know that ye have life eternal, ye who believe in the name of the Son of God.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:14 | And this is the confidence that we have towards him, that whatever we ask of him, agreeably to his will, he heareth us.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:15 | And if we are persuaded that he heareth us respecting what we ask of him, we are confident of receiving presently the petitions which we asked of him.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:16 |
If any one shall see his brother sin a sin which doth not deserve death, he shall ask, and life will be given him, to them
I Jo | Murdock | 5:18 | And we know, that every one who is born of God, sinneth not: for he that is born of God keepeth himself, and the evil one toucheth him not.
I Jo | Murdock | 5:20 | And we know that the Son of God hath come, and hath given us knowledge that we might know the True One; and that we might be in the True One, in his Son Jesus the Messiah. He is the true God, and the life eternal.
