Chapter 1
Lame GodsWord 1:1  "Look how deserted Jerusalem is! Once the city was crowded with people. Once it was important among the nations. Now it is a widow. Once it was a princess among the provinces. Now it does forced labor.
Lame GodsWord 1:2  Jerusalem cries bitterly at night with tears running down its cheeks. Out of all those who love the city, no one offers it comfort. All of Jerusalem's friends have betrayed it and become its enemies.
Lame GodsWord 1:3  "Judah has been exiled after much suffering and harsh treatment. Its people live among the nations; they find no rest. Those who chased them caught up with them in places where there was no way out.
Lame GodsWord 1:4  "The roads to Zion are deserted. No one comes to the annual festivals. No one passes through any of its gates. Its priests are groaning. Its young women are made to suffer. Zion is bitter.
Lame GodsWord 1:5  Its opponents are now in control. Its enemies have no worries. The LORD made Zion suffer for its many rebellious acts. Its children go ahead of their opponents into captivity.
Lame GodsWord 1:6  All splendor has abandoned the people of Zion. Its influential people were like deer that couldn't find any pasture. They ran without any strength ahead of the hunters.
Lame GodsWord 1:7  "Now, during its suffering and oppression, Jerusalem remembers all the treasures it had from ancient times, when its people fell into the power of their enemies with no one to help them. Their opponents looked on, and they laughed at Jerusalem's downfall.
Lame GodsWord 1:8  Jerusalem has sinned so much that it has become a filthy thing. Everyone who used to honor it now despises it. They've seen it naked. Jerusalem groans and turns away.
Lame GodsWord 1:9  Jerusalem's own filth covers its clothes. It gave no thought to its future. Its downfall was shocking. No one offers it comfort. 'O LORD, look at my suffering, because my enemies have triumphed.'
Lame GodsWord 1:10  The enemies laid their hands on all of the city's treasures. Jerusalem has seen the nations enter the holy place. 'O Lord, they are the same people you have forbidden to enter your congregation.'
Lame GodsWord 1:11  All the people are groaning as they beg for bread. They trade their treasures for food to keep themselves alive. 'O LORD, look and see how despised I am!'"
Lame GodsWord 1:12  "Doesn't this affect all of you who pass by? Look and see if there's any pain like the pain that the LORD has caused me, like the pain that he has made me suffer on the day of his fierce anger.
Lame GodsWord 1:13  He sent fire from above. He made it go deep into my bones. He spread a net for my feet. He made me turn back. He has left me devastated. He has made me sick all day long.
Lame GodsWord 1:14  My rebellious acts are a heavy burden for me. They were tied together by God's own hands. They were tied around my neck. He has weakened me with them. The Lord has handed me over to people I cannot oppose.
Lame GodsWord 1:15  The Lord has treated all the warriors inside my walls with contempt. He called an army to defeat my young men. The LORD trampled the people of Judah in a winepress.
Lame GodsWord 1:16  I'm crying because of all these things. My eyes--my eyes flow with tears. No one can give me the comfort I need to keep me alive. Everyone is too far away from me. My children are devastated because my enemies have won."
Lame GodsWord 1:17  Zion holds out its hands. No one offers it comfort. The LORD has given this order about Jacob: His own neighbors will become his opponents. Jerusalem has become a filthy thing among them.
Lame GodsWord 1:18  "The LORD is right in what he did, because I rebelled against his word. Please listen, all you people, and look at my pain. My young women and young men have gone into captivity.
Lame GodsWord 1:19  I called for those who love me, but they betrayed me. My priests and leaders breathed their last breath in the city, looking for food to keep themselves alive.
Lame GodsWord 1:20  "O LORD, see the distress I'm in! My stomach is churning. My heart is pounding because I've been very bitter. In the streets swords kill my children. Inside the houses it's like death.
Lame GodsWord 1:21  "All my enemies have heard that I am groaning. No one offers me comfort. All my enemies have heard about my disaster. They are happy that you did it. You have allowed the day to come, the one that you had announced. Let my enemies be like me now.
Lame GodsWord 1:22  Recall all of their wickedness. Then deal with them as you have dealt with me because of all my rebellious acts. I groan so much and feel so sick at heart."
Chapter 2
Lame GodsWord 2:1  "Look how the Lord has covered the people of Zion with the cloud of his anger! He has thrown down Israel's beauty from heaven to earth. He didn't even remember his footstool on the day of his anger.
Lame GodsWord 2:2  The Lord swallowed up all of Jacob's pastures without any pity. He tore down the fortified cities of Judah in his fury. He brought the kingdom of Judah and its leaders down to the ground in dishonor.
Lame GodsWord 2:3  In his burning anger he cut off all of Israel's strength. He withdrew his right hand when they faced their enemy. He burned like a raging fire in the land of Jacob, destroying everything around him.
Lame GodsWord 2:4  Like an enemy he bent his bow. Like an opponent his right hand held the arrow steady. He killed all the beautiful people. He poured out his fury like fire on the tent of Zion's people.
Lame GodsWord 2:5  The Lord became an enemy. He swallowed up Israel. He swallowed up all of its palaces. He destroyed its strongholds. He made the people of Judah mourn and moan.
Lame GodsWord 2:6  He stripped his own booth as if it were a garden and destroyed his own festivals. The LORD wiped out the memory of festivals and days of worship in Zion. He expelled kings and priests because of his fierce anger.
Lame GodsWord 2:7  The Lord rejected his altar and disowned his holy place. He handed the walls of Zion's palaces over to its enemies. The enemies made noise in the LORD's temple as though it were a festival day.
Lame GodsWord 2:8  The LORD planned to destroy the wall of Zion's people. He marked it off with a line. He didn't take his hand away until he had swallowed it up. He made the towers and walls mourn. They are completely dejected.
Lame GodsWord 2:9  "Zion's gates have sunk into the ground. The LORD destroyed and shattered the bars across its gates. Its king and influential people are scattered among the nations. There is no longer any instruction from Moses' Teachings. Its prophets can find no visions from the LORD.
Lame GodsWord 2:10  The respected leaders of Zion's people sit silently on the ground. They throw dirt on their heads and put on sackcloth. The young women of Jerusalem bow their heads to the ground.
Lame GodsWord 2:11  My eyes are worn out with tears. My stomach is churning. My heart is poured out on the ground because of the destruction of my people. Little children and infants faint in the city streets.
Lame GodsWord 2:12  They're asking their mothers for some bread and wine as they faint like wounded people in the city streets. Their lives dwindle away in their mothers' arms.
Lame GodsWord 2:13  "What example can I give you? What parallel can I show you, people of Jerusalem? What comparison can I make that will comfort you, beloved people of Zion? Your wounds are as deep as the sea. Who can heal you?
Lame GodsWord 2:14  Your prophets saw misleading visions about you. They painted a good picture of you. They didn't expose your guilt in order to make things better again. They gave you false prophecies that misled you.
Lame GodsWord 2:15  Everyone who walks along the road shakes a fist at you. They hiss and shake their heads at Jerusalem's people: 'Is this the city they used to call absolutely beautiful, the joy of the whole world?'
Lame GodsWord 2:16  All your enemies gawk at you. They hiss and grit their teeth. They say, 'We've swallowed it up. Yes, this is the day we've been waiting for. At last we have seen it!'
Lame GodsWord 2:17  The LORD has accomplished what he had planned to do. He carried out the threat he announced long ago. He tore you down without any pity, Jerusalem. He made your enemies gloat over you. He raised the weapons of your opponents.
Lame GodsWord 2:18  The hearts of Jerusalem's people cried out to the LORD, the wall of Zion's people. Let your tears run down like a river day and night. Don't let them stop. Don't let your eyes rest.
Lame GodsWord 2:19  Get up! Cry out at night, every hour on the hour. Pour your heart out like water in the presence of the LORD. Lift up your hands to him in prayer for the life of your little children who faint from hunger at every street corner."
Lame GodsWord 2:20  "O LORD, look and consider: Have you ever treated anyone like this? Should women eat their own children, the children they have nursed? Should priests and prophets be killed in the Lord's holy place?
Lame GodsWord 2:21  Young and old lie on the ground in the streets. My young women and men are cut down by swords. You killed them on the day of your anger. You slaughtered them without any pity.
Lame GodsWord 2:22  You have invited those who terrorize me on every side, as though they were invited to a festival. No one escaped or survived on the day of the LORD's anger. My enemy has murdered the children I nursed and raised."
Chapter 3
Lame GodsWord 3:1  "I am the man who has experienced suffering under the rod of God's fury.
Lame GodsWord 3:2  God has driven me away and made me walk in darkness instead of light.
Lame GodsWord 3:4  He has made my flesh and my skin waste away. He has broken my bones.
Lame GodsWord 3:5  He has attacked me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship.
Lame GodsWord 3:6  He has made me live in darkness, like those who died a long time ago.
Lame GodsWord 3:7  He has blocked me so that I can't get out. He has put heavy chains on me.
Lame GodsWord 3:8  Even when I cry and call for help, he shuts out my prayer.
Lame GodsWord 3:9  He has blocked my way with cut stones and made my paths crooked.
Lame GodsWord 3:10  He is like a bear waiting to ambush me, like a lion in hiding.
Lame GodsWord 3:11  He has forced me off the road I was taking, torn me to pieces, and left me with nothing.
Lame GodsWord 3:12  He has drawn his bow and made me the target for his arrows.
Lame GodsWord 3:13  He has shot the arrows from his quiver into my heart.
Lame GodsWord 3:14  I have become a laughingstock to all my people. All day long they make fun of me with their songs.
Lame GodsWord 3:15  He has filled me with bitterness. He has made me drink wormwood.
Lame GodsWord 3:16  He has ground my teeth with gravel. He has trampled me into the dust.
Lame GodsWord 3:17  "My soul has been kept from enjoying peace. I have forgotten what happiness is.
Lame GodsWord 3:18  I said, 'I've lost my strength to live and my hope in the LORD.'
Lame GodsWord 3:19  Remember my suffering and my aimless wandering, the wormwood and poison.
Lame GodsWord 3:20  My soul continues to remember these things and is so discouraged.
Lame GodsWord 3:21  "The reason I can still find hope is that I keep this one thing in mind:
Lame GodsWord 3:22  the LORD's mercy. We were not completely wiped out. His compassion is never limited.
Lame GodsWord 3:23  It is new every morning. His faithfulness is great.
Lame GodsWord 3:24  My soul can say, 'The LORD is my lot in life. That is why I find hope in him.'
Lame GodsWord 3:25  The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to anyone who seeks help from him.
Lame GodsWord 3:26  "It is good to continue to hope and wait silently for the LORD to save us.
Lame GodsWord 3:27  It is good for people to endure burdens when they're young.
Lame GodsWord 3:28  They should sit alone and remain silent because the LORD has laid these burdens on them.
Lame GodsWord 3:29  They should put their mouths in the dust. Maybe a reason to hope exists.
Lame GodsWord 3:30  They should turn their cheeks to the one who strikes them and take their fill of insults.
Lame GodsWord 3:32  Even if he makes us suffer, he will have compassion in keeping with the richness of his mercy.
Lame GodsWord 3:33  He does not willingly bring suffering or grief to anyone,
Lame GodsWord 3:35  deny people their rights in the presence of the Most High God,
Lame GodsWord 3:36  or deprive people of justice in court. The Lord isn't happy to see these things.
Lame GodsWord 3:37  Who was it who spoke and it came into being? It was the Lord who gave the order.
Lame GodsWord 3:38  Both good and bad come from the mouth of the Most High God.
Lame GodsWord 3:39  "Why should any living mortal (any person) complain about being punished for sin?
Lame GodsWord 3:40  Let us look closely at our ways and examine them and then return to the LORD.
Lame GodsWord 3:41  Let us raise our hearts and hands to God in heaven.
Lame GodsWord 3:42  "We have been disobedient and rebellious. You haven't forgiven us.
Lame GodsWord 3:43  You covered yourself with anger and pursued us. You killed without pity.
Lame GodsWord 3:44  You covered yourself with a cloud so that no prayer could get through it.
Lame GodsWord 3:47  Panic and pitfalls have found us, so have devastation and destruction.
Lame GodsWord 3:48  "Streams of tears run down from my eyes over the ruin of my dear people.
Lame GodsWord 3:49  My eyes will keep flowing without stopping for a moment
Lame GodsWord 3:51  What I see with my eyes disturbs me deeply because of all the young women in my city.
Lame GodsWord 3:52  "Those who were my enemies for no reason hunted me like a bird.
Lame GodsWord 3:53  They threw me alive into a pit and threw rocks at me.
Lame GodsWord 3:54  Water flowed over my head. I thought I was finished.
Lame GodsWord 3:56  Listen to my cry for help. Don't close your ears when I cry out for relief.
Lame GodsWord 3:57  Be close at hand when I call to you. You told me not to be afraid.
Lame GodsWord 3:59  Look at the wrong that has been done to me, O LORD. Give me a fair verdict.
Lame GodsWord 3:60  Look at all their malice, all their plots against me.
Lame GodsWord 3:61  Listen to their insults, all their plots against me.
Lame GodsWord 3:62  The words and thoughts of those who attack me are directed against me all day long.
Lame GodsWord 3:63  Look at them! Whether they are sitting or standing, they make fun of me in their songs.
Lame GodsWord 3:64  Pay them back, O LORD, for what they deserve, for what their own hands have done.
Lame GodsWord 3:66  Pursue them in anger, and wipe them out from under the LORD's heaven."
Chapter 4
Lame GodsWord 4:1  "Look how the gold has become tarnished! The fine gold has changed! The sacred stones are scattered at every street corner.
Lame GodsWord 4:2  "Zion's precious children, who are worth their weight in fine gold, are now treated like clay pots, like those made by a potter's hands.
Lame GodsWord 4:3  Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but the women of my people are as cruel as wild ostriches.
Lame GodsWord 4:4  The tongues of nursing infants stick to the roofs of their mouths because of their thirst. Little children beg for bread, but no one will break off a piece for them.
Lame GodsWord 4:5  Those who used to eat delicacies are now destitute in the streets. Those who used to wear expensive clothes now pick through piles of garbage.
Lame GodsWord 4:6  The punishment for my people's wickedness has been more severe than the punishment for the sins of Sodom. Sodom was destroyed instantly, without one human hand touching it.
Lame GodsWord 4:7  Zion's princes were purer than snow, whiter than milk. Their bodies were more pink than coral. Their hair was like sapphires.
Lame GodsWord 4:8  Their faces are now blacker than soot. No one recognizes them on the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones. It has become as dry as bark.
Lame GodsWord 4:9  Those who were killed with swords are better off than those who are dying from starvation. Those who were stabbed bled to death. The others are dying because there is nothing in the fields to eat.
Lame GodsWord 4:10  The hands of loving mothers cooked their own children. The children were used for food by my people when they were being destroyed by a blockade.
Lame GodsWord 4:11  The LORD's fury has accomplished his purpose. He unleashed his burning anger. He started a fire in Zion that even burned its foundations.
Lame GodsWord 4:12  Neither the kings of the earth nor anyone living on earth could believe that enemies or invaders would ever get through the gates of Jerusalem.
Lame GodsWord 4:13  They got through because of the sins of Jerusalem's prophets and the crimes of its priests, who spilled the blood of righteous people within it.
Lame GodsWord 4:14  My people staggered blindly through the streets. They were so contaminated with bloodstains that no one would touch their clothes.
Lame GodsWord 4:15  'Get away! You're unclean,' people yelled at them. 'Get away! Get away! Don't touch anyone.' When they fled and wandered around, the people of the nations said, 'They can't stay here any longer.'
Lame GodsWord 4:16  The LORD himself has scattered them. He will no longer look favorably on them. They no longer respected the priests, nor did they honor their older leaders."
Lame GodsWord 4:17  "We are still straining our eyes, trying in vain to find help. We waited and waited for a nation that didn't save us.
Lame GodsWord 4:18  The enemy kept tracking us down, so we couldn't even go out into the streets. Our end was near. Our time was up. Our end had come.
Lame GodsWord 4:19  Those who were hunting us were faster than eagles in the sky. They chased us in the mountains and ambushed us in the wilderness.
Lame GodsWord 4:20  The person the LORD anointed as king, who is the breath of our life, was caught in their pits. We had thought that we would live in our king's shadow among the nations."
Lame GodsWord 4:21  "Rejoice and be glad, people of Edom, inhabitants of the country of Uz. The cup of the LORD's fury will be passed to you next. You'll get drunk and take off all your clothes.
Lame GodsWord 4:22  People of Zion, the punishment for your wickedness will end. The LORD will not let you remain in exile. People of Edom, he will punish you for your wickedness. He will expose your sins."
Chapter 5
Lame GodsWord 5:1  "Remember, O LORD, what has happened to us. Take a look at our disgrace!
Lame GodsWord 5:2  "The land we inherited has been turned over to strangers. Our homes have been turned over to foreigners.
Lame GodsWord 5:3  We are orphans without a father. Our mothers are like widows.
Lame GodsWord 5:4  We have to pay to drink our own water. We have to pay to chop our own wood.
Lame GodsWord 5:5  Our enemies are breathing down our necks. We are worn out and not permitted to rest.
Lame GodsWord 5:7  Our ancestors sinned. Now they are gone, but we have to take the punishment for their wickedness.
Lame GodsWord 5:8  Slaves rule us. There is no one to rescue us from them.
Lame GodsWord 5:9  To get our food, we have to risk our lives in the heat of the desert.
Lame GodsWord 5:10  Our skin is as hot as an oven from the burning heat of starvation.
Lame GodsWord 5:11  Women in Zion are raped, so are the girls in the cities of Judah.
Lame GodsWord 5:12  Our leaders are hung by their hands. Our older leaders are shown no respect.
Lame GodsWord 5:13  Our young men work at the mill, and our boys stagger under loads of wood.
Lame GodsWord 5:14  Our older leaders have stopped meeting at the city gate, and our young men no longer play their music.
Lame GodsWord 5:15  There is no joy left in our hearts. Our dancing has turned into mourning.
Lame GodsWord 5:16  The crown has fallen from our head. Because we have sinned, it has been disastrous for us.
Lame GodsWord 5:17  This is why we feel sick. This is why our eyes see less and less.
Lame GodsWord 5:18  Foxes roam around on Mount Zion, which lies in ruins.
Lame GodsWord 5:19  "But you, O LORD, sit enthroned forever, and your reign continues throughout every generation.
Lame GodsWord 5:20  Why have you completely forgotten us? Why have you abandoned us for such a long time?
Lame GodsWord 5:21  O LORD, bring us back to you, and we'll come back. Give us back the life we had long ago,
Lame GodsWord 5:22  unless you have completely rejected us and are very angry with us."
