Chapter 1

1:1  In the eighth month, in the second year of king Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Barachias, the son of Addo, the prophet, saying:

1:1  In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

1:1  In mense octavo, in anno secundo Darii regis, factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam filium Barachiæ filii Addo prophetam, dicens :

1:2  The Lord hath been exceeding angry with your fathers.

1:2  The Lord hath been sore displeased with your fathers.

1:2  Iratus est Dominus super patres vestros iracundia.

1:3  And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Turn ye to me, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will turn to you, saith the Lord of hosts.

1:3  Therefore say thou unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye unto me, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will turn unto you, saith the Lord of hosts.

1:3  Et dices ad eos : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Convertimini ad me, ait Dominus exercituum, et convertar ad vos, dicit Dominus exercituum.

1:4  Be not as your fathers, to whom the former prophets have cried, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Turn ye from your evil ways, and from your wicked thoughts: but they did not give ear, neither did they hearken to me, saith the Lord.

1:4  Be ye not as your fathers, unto whom the former prophets have cried, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; Turn ye now from your evil ways, and from your evil doings: but they did not hear, nor hearken unto me, saith the Lord.

1:4  Ne sitis sicut patres vestri, ad quos clamabant prophetæ priores, dicentes : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Convertimini de viis vestris malis, et de cogitationibus vestris pessimis : et non audierunt, neque attenderunt ad me, dicit Dominus.

1:5  Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, shall they live always?

1:5  Your fathers, where are they? and the prophets, do they live for ever?

1:5  Patres vestri, ubi sunt ? et prophetæ numquid in sempiternum vivent ?

1:6  But yet my words, and my ordinances, which I gave in charge to my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers, and they returned, and said: As the Lord of hosts thought to do to us according to our ways, and according to our devices, so he hath done to us.

1:6  But my words and my statutes, which I commanded my servants the prophets, did they not take hold of your fathers? and they returned and said, Like as the Lord of hosts thought to do unto us, according to our ways, and according to our doings, so hath he dealt with us.

1:6  Verumtamen verba mea, et legitima mea, quæ mandavi servis meis prophetis, numquid non comprehenderunt patres vestros, et conversi sunt, et dixerunt : Sicut cogitavit Dominus exercituum facere nobis secundum vias nostras, et secundum adinventiones nostras, fecit nobis ?

1:7  In the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month which is called Sabath, in the second year of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah the son of Barachias, the son of Addo, the prophet, saying:

1:7  Upon the four and twentieth day of the eleventh month, which is the month Sebat, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord unto Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo the prophet, saying,

1:7  In die vigesima et quarta undecimi mensis Sabath, in anno secundo Darii, factum est verbum Domini ad Zachariam filium Barachiæ filii Addo prophetam, dicens :

1:8  I saw by night, and behold a man riding upon a red horse, and he stood among the myrtle trees, that were in the bottom: and behind him were horses, red, speckled, and white.

1:8  Vidi per noctem, et ecce vir ascendens super equum rufum, et ipse stabat inter myrteta, quæ erant in profundo, et post eum equi rufi, varii, et albi.

1:9  And I said: What are these, my Lord? and the angel that spoke in me, said to me: I will shew thee what these are:

1:9  Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the angel that talked with me said unto me, I will shew thee what these be.

1:9  Et dixi : Quid sunt isti, domine mi ? Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me : Ego ostendam tibi quid sint hæc.

1:10  And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered, and said: These are they, whom the Lord hath sent to walk through the earth.

1:10  And the man that stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the Lord hath sent to walk to and fro through the earth.

1:10  Et respondit vir qui stabat inter myrteta, et dixit : Isti sunt quos misit Dominus ut perambulent terram.

1:11  And they answered the angel of the Lord, that stood among the myrtle trees, and said: We have walked through the earth, and behold all the earth is inhabited, and is at rest.

1:11  And they answered the angel of the Lord that stood among the myrtle trees, and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth, and, behold, all the earth sitteth still, and is at rest.

1:11  Et responderunt angelo Domini, qui stabat inter myrteta, et dixerunt : Perambulavimus terram, et ecce omnis terra habitatur, et quiescit.

1:12  And the angel of the Lord answered, and said: O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem, and on the cities of Juda, with which thou hast been angry? this is now the seventieth year.

1:12  Then the angel of the Lord answered and said, O Lord of hosts, how long wilt thou not have mercy on Jerusalem and on the cities of Judah, against which thou hast had indignation these threescore and ten years?

1:12  Et respondit angelus Domini, et dixit : Domine exercituum, usquequo tu non misereberis Jerusalem, et urbium Juda, quibus iratus es ? iste jam septuagesimus annus est.

1:13  And the Lord answered the angel, that spoke in me, good words, comfortable words.

1:13  And the Lord answered the angel that talked with me with good words and comfortable words.

1:13  Et respondit Dominus angelo qui loquebatur in me verba bona, verba consolatoria.

1:14  And the angel that spoke in me, said to me: Cry thou, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I am zealous for Jerusalem, and Sion with a great zeal.

1:14  So the angel that communed with me said unto me, Cry thou, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.

1:14  Et dixit ad me angelus qui loquebatur in me : Clama, dicens : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Zelatus sum Jerusalem et Sion zelo magno,

1:15  And I am angry with a great anger with the wealthy nations: for I was angry a little, but they helped forward the evil.

1:15  And I am very sore displeased with the heathen that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

1:15  et ira magna ego irascor super gentes opulentas, quia ego iratus sum parum, ipsi vero adjuverunt in malum.

1:16  Therefore thus saith the Lord: I will return to Jerusalem in mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts: and the building line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

1:16  Therefore thus saith the Lord; I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, saith the Lord of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

1:16  Propterea hæc dicit Dominus : Revertar ad Jerusalem in misericordiis, et domus mea ædificabitur in ea, ait Dominus exercituum, et perpendiculum extendetur super Jerusalem.

1:17  Cry yet, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: My cities shall yet flow with good things: and the Lord will yet comfort Sion, and he will yet choose Jerusalem.

1:17  Cry yet, saying, Thus saith the Lord of hosts; My cities through prosperity shall yet be spread abroad; and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion, and shall yet choose Jerusalem.

1:17  Adhuc clama, dicens : Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Adhuc affluent civitates meæ bonis, et consolabitur adhuc Dominus Sion, et eliget adhuc Jerusalem.

1:18  And I lifted up my eyes, and saw: and behold four horns.

1:18  Then lifted I up mine eyes, and saw, and behold four horns.

1:18  Et levavi oculos meos, et vidi, et ecce quatuor cornua.

1:19  And I said to the angel that spoke in me: What are these? And he said to me: These are the horns that have scattered Juda, and Israel, and Jerusalem.

1:19  And I said unto the angel that talked with me, What be these? And he answered me, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.

1:19  Et dixi ad angelum qui loquebatur in me : Quid sunt hæc ? Et dixit ad me : Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam, et Israël, et Jerusalem.

1:20  And the Lord shewed me four smiths.

1:20  And the Lord shewed me four carpenters.

1:20  Et ostendit mihi Dominus quatuor fabros.

1:21  And I said: What come these to do? and he spoke, saying: These are the horns which have scattered Juda every man apart, and none of them lifted up his head: and these are come to fray them, to cast down the horns of the nations, that have lifted up the horn upon the land of Juda to scatter it.

1:21  Then said I, What come these to do? And he spake, saying, These are the horns which have scattered Judah, so that no man did lift up his head: but these are come to fray them, to cast out the horns of the Gentiles, which lifted up their horn over the land of Judah to scatter it.

1:21  Et dixi : Quid isti veniunt facere ? Qui ait, dicens : Hæc sunt cornua quæ ventilaverunt Judam per singulos viros, et nemo eorum levavit caput suum : et venerunt isti deterrere ea, ut dejiciant cornua gentium, quæ levaverunt cornu super terram Juda ut dispergerent eam.

Chapter 2

2:1  And I lifted up my eyes, and saw, and behold a man, with a measuring line in his hand.

2:1  I lifted up mine eyes again, and looked, and behold a man with a measuring line in his hand.

2:1  Et levavi oculos meos, et vidi, et ecce vir, et in manu ejus funiculus mensorum.

2:2  And I said: Whither goest thou? and he said to me: To measure Jerusalem, and to see how great is the breadth thereof, and how great the length thereof.

2:2  Then said I, Whither goest thou? And he said unto me, To measure Jerusalem, to see what is the breadth thereof, and what is the length thereof.

2:2  Et dixi : Quo tu vadis ? Et dixit ad me : Ut metiar Jerusalem, et videam quanta sit latitudo ejus, et quanta longitudo ejus.

2:3  And behold the angel that spoke in me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him.

2:3  And, behold, the angel that talked with me went forth, and another angel went out to meet him,

2:3  Et ecce angelus qui loquebatur in me egrediebatur, et angelus alius egrediebatur in occursum ejus :

2:4  And he said to him: Run, speak to this young man, saying: Jerusalem shall be inhabited without walls, by reason of the multitude of men, and of the beasts in the midst thereof.

2:4  And said unto him, Run, speak to this young man, saying, Jerusalem shall be inhabited as towns without walls for the multitude of men and cattle therein:

2:4  et dixit ad eum : Curre, loquere ad puerum istum, dicens : Absque muro habitabitur Jerusalem, præ multitudine hominum et jumentorum in medio ejus.

2:5  And I will be to it, saith the Lord, a wall of fire round about: and I will be in glory in the midst thereof.

2:5  For I, saith the Lord, will be unto her a wall of fire round about, and will be the glory in the midst of her.

2:5  Et ego ero ei, ait Dominus, murus ignis in circuitu, et in gloria ero in medio ejus.

2:6  O, O flee ye out of the land of the north, saith the Lord, for I have scattered you into the four winds of heaven, saith the Lord.

2:6  Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the Lord.

2:6  O, o, fugite de terra aquilonis, dicit Dominus, quoniam in quatuor ventos cæli dispersi vos, dicit Dominus.

2:7  O Sion, flee, thou that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon:

2:7  Deliver thyself, O Zion, that dwellest with the daughter of Babylon.

2:7  O Sion ! fuge, quæ habitas apud filiam Babylonis :

2:8  For thus saith the Lord of hosts: After the glory he hath sent me to the nations that have robbed you: for he that toucheth you, toucheth the apple of my eye:

2:8  For thus saith the Lord of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

2:8  quia hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Post gloriam misit me ad gentes quæ spoliaverunt vos : qui enim tetigerit vos, tangit pupillam oculi mei :

2:9  For behold, I lift up my hand upon them, and they shall be a prey to those that served them: and you shall know that the Lord of hosts sent me.

2:9  For, behold, I will shake mine hand upon them, and they shall be a spoil to their servants: and ye shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me.

2:9  quia ecce ego levo manum meam super eos, et erunt prædæ his qui serviebant sibi : et cognoscetis quia Dominus exercituum misit me.

2:10  Sing praise, and rejoice, O daughter of Sion: for behold I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee: saith the Lord.

2:10  Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the Lord.

2:10  Lauda et lætare, filia Sion, quia ecce ego venio, et habitabo in medio tui, ait Dominus.

2:11  And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall be my people, and I will dwell in the midst of thee: and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me to thee.

2:11  And many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and shall be my people: and I will dwell in the midst of thee, and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto thee.

2:11  Et applicabuntur gentes multæ ad Dominum in die illa, et erunt mihi in populum, et habitabo in medio tui : et scies quia Dominus exercituum misit me ad te.

2:12  And the Lord shall possess Juda his portion in the sanctified land: and he shall yet choose Jerusalem.

2:12  And the Lord shall inherit Judah his portion in the holy land, and shall choose Jerusalem again.

2:12  Et possidebit Dominus Judam partem suam in terra sanctificata, et eliget adhuc Jerusalem.

2:13  Let all flesh be silent at the presence of the Lord: for he is risen up out of his holy habitation.

2:13  Be silent, O all flesh, before the Lord: for he is raised up out of his holy habitation.

2:13  Sileat omnis caro a facie Domini, quia consurrexit de habitaculo sancto suo.

Chapter 3

3:1  And the Lord shewed me Jesus the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord: and Satan stood on his right hand to be his adversary.

3:1  And he shewed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

3:1  Et ostendit mihi Dominus Jesum sacerdotem magnum, stantem coram angelo Domini : et Satan stabat a dextris ejus ut adversaretur ei.

3:2  And the Lord said to Satan: The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan: and the Lord that chose Jerusalem rebuke thee: Is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

3:2  And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

3:2  Et dixit Dominus ad Satan : Increpet Dominus in te, Satan ! et increpet Dominus in te, qui elegit Jerusalem ! numquid non iste torris est erutus de igne ?

3:3  And Jesus was clothed with filthy garments: and he stood before the face of the angel.

3:3  Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

3:3  Et Jesus erat indutus vestibus sordidis, et stabat ante faciem angeli.

3:4  Who answered, and said to them that stood before him, saying: Take away the filthy garments from him. And he said to him: Behold I have taken away thy iniquity, and have clothed thee with change of garments.

3:4  And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

3:4  Qui respondit, et ait ad eos qui stabant coram se, dicens : Auferte vestimenta sordida ab eo. Et dixit ad eum : Ecce abstuli a te iniquitatem tuam, et indui te mutatoriis.

3:5  And he said: Put a clean mitre upon his head: and they put a clean mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments, and the angel of the Lord stood.

3:5  And I said, Let them set a fair mitre upon his head. So they set a fair mitre upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the Lord stood by.

3:5  Et dixit : Ponite cidarim mundam super caput ejus. Et posuerunt cidarim mundam super caput ejus, et induerunt eum vestibus : et angelus Domini stabat.

3:6  And the angel of the Lord protested to Jesus, saying:

3:6  And the angel of the Lord protested unto Joshua, saying,

3:6  Et contestabatur angelus Domini Jesum, dicens :

3:7  Thus saith the Lord of hosts: If thou wilt walk in my ways, and keep my charge, thou also shalt judge my house, and shalt keep my courts, and I will give thee some of them that are now present here to walk with thee.

3:7  Thus saith the Lord of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

3:7  Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Si in viis meis ambulaveris, et custodiam meam custodieris, tu quoque judicabis domum meam, et custodies atria mea, et dabo tibi ambulantes de his qui nunc hic assistunt.

3:8  Hear, O Jesus thou high priest, thou and thy friends that dwell before thee, for they are portending men: for behold, I WILL BRING MY SERVANT THE ORIENT.

3:8  Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

3:8  Audi, Jesu sacerdos magne, tu et amici tui, qui habitant coram te, quia viri portendentes sunt : ecce enim ego adducam servum meum Orientem.

3:9  For behold the stone that I have laid before Jesus: upon one stone there are seven eyes: behold I will grave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will take away the iniquity of that land in one day.

3:9  For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the Lord of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

3:9  Quia ecce lapis quem dedi coram Jesu : super lapidem unum septem oculi sunt : ecce ego cælabo sculpturam ejus, ait Dominus exercituum, et auferam iniquitatem terræ illius in die una.

3:10  In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, every man shall call his friend under the vine and under the fig tree.

3:10  In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbour under the vine and under the fig tree.

3:10  In die illa, dicit Dominus exercituum, vocabit vir amicum suum subter vitem et subter ficum.

Chapter 4

4:1  And the angel that spoke in me came again: and he waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep.

4:1  And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep,

4:1  Et reversus est angelus qui loquebatur in me, et suscitavit me quasi virum qui suscitatur de somno suo.

4:2  And he said to me: What seest thou? And I said: I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, and its lamp upon the top of it: and the seven lights thereof upon it: and seven funnels for the lights that were upon the top thereof.

4:2  And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof:

4:2  Et dixit ad me : Quid tu vides ? Et dixi : Vidi, et ecce candelabrum aureum totum, et lampas ejus super caput ipsius, et septem lucernæ ejus super illud, et septem infusoria lucernis quæ erant super caput ejus.

4:3  And two olive trees over it: one upon the right side of the lamp, and the other upon the left side thereof.

4:3  And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof.

4:3  Et duæ olivæ super illud : una a dextris lampadis, et una a sinistris ejus.

4:4  And I answered, and said to the angel that spoke in me, saying: What are these things, my lord?

4:4  So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord?

4:4  Et respondi, et aio ad angelum qui loquebatur in me, dicens : Quid sunt hæc, domine mi ?

4:5  And the angel that spoke in me answered, and said to me: Knowest thou not what these things are? And I said: No, my lord.

4:5  Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.

4:5  Et respondit angelus qui loquebatur in me, et dixit ad me : Numquid nescis quid sunt hæc ? Et dixi : Non, domine mi.

4:6  And he answered, and spoke to me, saying: This is the word of the Lord to Zorobabel, saying: Not with an army, nor by might, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

4:6  Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

4:6  Et respondit, et ait ad me, dicens : Hoc est verbum Domini ad Zorobabel, dicens : Non in exercitu, nec in robore, sed in spiritu meo, dicit Dominus exercituum.

4:7  Who art thou, O great mountain, before Zorobabel? thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring out the chief stone, and shall give equal grace to the grace thereof.

4:7  Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace unto it.

4:7  Quis tu, mons magne, coram Zorobabel ? In planum : et educet lapidem primarium, et exæquabit gratiam gratiæ ejus.

4:8  And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

4:8  Moreover the word of the Lord came unto me, saying,

4:8  Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens :

4:9  The hands of Zorobabel have laid the foundations of this house, and his hands shall finish it: and you shall know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me to you.

4:9  The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the Lord of hosts hath sent me unto you.

4:9  Manus Zorobabel fundaverunt domum istam, et manus ejus perficient eam : et scietis quia Dominus exercituum misit me ad vos.

4:10  For who hath despised little days? and they shall rejoice, and shall see the tin plummet in the hand of Zorobabel. These are the seven eyes of the Lord, that run to and fro through the whole earth.

4:10  For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the Lord, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

4:10  Quis enim despexit dies parvos ? Et lætabuntur, et videbunt lapidem stanneum in manu Zorobabel. Septem isti oculi sunt Domini, qui discurrunt in universam terram.

4:11  And I answered, and said to him: What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick, and upon the left side thereof ?

4:11  Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof?

4:11  Et respondi, et dixi ad eum : Quid sunt duæ olivæ istæ, ad dexteram candelabri, et ad sinistram ejus ?

4:12  And I answered again, and said to him: What are the two olive branches, that are by the two golden beaks, in which are the funnels of gold?

4:12  And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves?

4:12  Et respondi secundo, et dixi ad eum : Quid sunt duæ spicæ olivarum quæ sunt juxta duo rostra aurea in quibus sunt suffusoria ex auro ?

4:13  And he spoke to me, saying: Knowest thou not what these are? And I said: No, my lord.

4:13  And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord.

4:13  Et ait ad me, dicens : Numquid nescis quid sunt hæc ? Et dixi : Non, domine mi.

4:14  And he said: These are two sons of oil who stand before the Lord of the whole earth.

4:14  Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.

4:14  Et dixit : Isti sunt duo filii olei, qui assistunt Dominatori universæ terræ.

Chapter 5

5:1  And I turned and lifted up my eyes: and I saw, and behold a volume flying.

5:1  Then I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a flying roll.

5:1  Et conversus sum, et levavi oculos meos, et vidi, et ecce volumen volans.

5:2  And he said to me: What seest thou? And I said: I see a volume flying: the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

5:2  And he said unto me, What seest thou? And I answered, I see a flying roll; the length thereof is twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof ten cubits.

5:3  And he said to me: This is the curse that goeth forth over the face of the earth: for every thief shall be judged as is there written: and every one that sweareth in like manner shall be judged by it.

5:5  And the angel went forth that spoke in me, and he said to me: Lift up thy eyes, and see what this is, that goeth forth.

5:6  And I said: What is it? And he said: This is a vessel going forth. And he said: This is their eye in all the earth.

5:7  And behold a talent of lead was carried, and behold a woman sitting in the midst of the vessel.

5:7  And, behold, there was lifted up a talent of lead: and this is a woman that sitteth in the midst of the ephah.

5:8  And he said: This is wickedness. And he cast her into the midst of the vessel, and cast the weight of lead upon the mouth thereof.

5:10  And I said to the angel that spoke in me: Whither do these carry the vessel?

5:11  And he said to me: That a house may be built for it in the land of Sennaar, and that it may be established, and set there upon its own basis.

Chapter 6

6:1  And I turned, and lifted up my eyes, and saw: and behold four chariots came out from the midst of two mountains: and the mountains were mountains of brass.

6:1  And I turned, and lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came four chariots out from between two mountains; and the mountains were mountains of brass.

6:2  In the first chariot were red horses, and in the second chariot black horses.

6:5  And the angel answered, and said to me: These are the four winds of the heaven, which go forth to stand before the Lord of all the earth.

6:6  That in which were the black horses went forth into the land of the north, and the white went forth after them: and the grisled went forth to the land the south.

6:10  Take of them of the captivity, of Holdai, and of Tobias, and of Idaias; thou shalt come in that day, and shalt go into the house of Josias, the son of Sophonias, who came out of Babylon.

6:10  Take of them of the captivity, even of Heldai, of Tobijah, and of Jedaiah, which are come from Babylon, and come thou the same day, and go into the house of Josiah the son of Zephaniah;

6:10  Sume a transmigratione, ab Holdai, et a Tobia, et ab Idaia : et venies tu in die illa, et intrabis domum Josiæ filii Sophoniæ, qui venerunt de Babylone.

6:11  And thou shalt take gold and silver: and shalt make crowns, and thou shalt set them on the head of Jesus the son of Josedec, the high priest.

6:12  And thou shalt speak to him, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts, saying: BEHOLD A MAN, THE ORIENT IS HIS NAME: and under him shall he spring up, and shall build a temple to the Lord.

6:12  And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

6:14  And the crowns shall be to Helem, and Tobias, and Idaias, and to Hem, the son of Sophonias, a memorial in the temple of the Lord.

6:15  And they that are far off, shall come and shall build in the temple of the Lord: and you shall know that the Lord of hosts sent me to you. But this shall come to pass, if hearing you will hear the voice of the Lord your God.

Chapter 7

7:1  And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Darius, that the word of the Lord came to Zechariah, in the fourth day of the ninth month, which is Casleu.

7:2  When Sarasar, and Rogommelech, and the men that were with him, sent to the house of God, to entreat the face of the Lord:

7:5  Speak to all the people of the land, and to the priests, saying: When you fasted, and mourned in the fifth and the seventh month for these seventy years: did you keep a fast unto me?

7:6  And when you did eat and drink, did you not eat for yourselves, and drink for yourselves?

7:6  et cum comedistis et bibistis, numquid non vobis comedistis et vobismetipsis bibistis ?

7:7  Are not these the words which the Lord spoke by the hand of the former prophets, when Jerusalem as yet was inhabited, and was wealthy, both itself and the cities round about it, and there were inhabitants towards the south, and in the plain?

7:7  Should ye not hear the words which the Lord hath cried by the former prophets, when Jerusalem was inhabited and in prosperity, and the cities thereof round about her, when men inhabited the south and the plain?

7:12  And they made their heart as the adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts sent in his spirit by the hand of the former prophets: so a great indignation came from Lord of hosts.

7:12  Yea, they made their hearts as an adamant stone, lest they should hear the law, and the words which the Lord of hosts hath sent in his spirit by the former prophets: therefore came a great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

7:13  And it came to pass that as he spoke, and they heard not: so shall they cry, and I will not hear, saith the Lord of hosts.

7:13  Therefore it is come to pass, that as he cried, and they would not hear; so they cried, and I would not hear, saith the Lord of hosts:

7:13  Et factum est sicut locutus est, et non audierunt : sic clamabunt et non exaudiam, dicit Dominus exercituum.

7:14  And I dispersed them throughout all kingdoms, which they know not: and the land was left desolate behind them, so that no man passed through or returned: and they changed the delightful land into a wilderness.

7:14  But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations whom they knew not. Thus the land was desolate after them, that no man passed through nor returned: for they laid the pleasant land desolate.

Chapter 8

8:1  And the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying:

8:2  Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I have been jealous for Sion with a great jealousy, and with a great indignation have I been jealous for her.

8:2  Hæc dicit Dominus exercituum : Zelatus sum Sion zelo magno, et indignatione magna zelatus sum eam.

8:3  Thus saith the Lord of hosts: I am returned to Sion, and I will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called The city of truth, and the mountain of the Lord of hosts, The sanctified mountain.

8:3  Thus saith the Lord; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the Lord of hosts the holy mountain.

8:4  Thus saith the Lord of hosts: There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem: and every man with his staff in his hand through multitude of days.

8:10  For before those days there was no hire for men, neither was there hire for beasts, neither was there peace to him that came in, nor to him that went out, because of the tribulation: and I let all men go every one against his neighbour.

8:11  But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people according to the former days, saith the Lord of hosts.

8:19  Thus saith the Lord of hosts: The fast of the fourth month, and the fast of the fifth, and the fast of the seventh, and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Juda, joy, and gladness, and great solemnities: only love ye truth and peace.

8:20  Thus saith the Lord of hosts, until people come and dwell in many cities,

8:21  And the inhabitants go one to another, saying: Let us go, and entreat the face of the Lord, and let us seek the Lord of hosts: I also will go.

8:21  And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the Lord, and to seek the Lord of hosts: I will go also.

8:22  And many peoples, and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to entreat the face of the Lord.

8:22  Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the Lord of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the Lord.

10:1  Ask ye of the Lord rain in the latter season, and the Lord will make snows, and will give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

11:10  And I took my rod that was called Beauty, and I cut it asunder to make void my covenant, which I had made with all people.

11:10  Et tuli virgam meam quæ vocabatur Decus, et abscidi eam, ut irritum facerem fœdus meum quod percussi cum omnibus populis.

11:11  And it was made void in that day: and so the poor of the flock that keep for me, understood that it is the word of the Lord.

11:12  And I said to them: If it be good in your eyes, bring hither my wages: and if not, be quiet. And they weighed for my wages thirty pieces of silver.

11:13  And the Lord said to me: Cast it to the statuary, a handsome price, that I was prized at by them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and I cast them into the house of the Lord to the statuary.

11:13  And the Lord said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the Lord.

11:13  Et dixit Dominus ad me : Projice illud ad statuarium, decorum pretium quo appretiatus sum ab eis. Et tuli triginta argenteos, et projeci illos in domum Domini, ad statuarium.

11:14  And I cut off my second rod that was called a Cord, that I might break the brotherhood between Juda and Israel.

11:14  Then I cut asunder mine other staff, even Bands, that I might break the brotherhood between Judah and Israel.

11:15  And the Lord said to me: Take to thee yet the instruments of a foolish shepherd.

11:16  For, lo, I will raise up a shepherd in the land, which shall not visit those that be cut off, neither shall seek the young one, nor heal that that is broken, nor feed that that standeth still: but he shall eat the flesh of the fat, and tear their claws in pieces.

11:17  O shepherd, and idol, that forsaketh the flock: the sword upon his arm and upon his right eye: his arm shall quite wither away, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

11:17  Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! the sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened.

Chapter 12

12:1  The burden of the word of the Lord upon Israel. Thus saith the Lord, who stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundations of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man in him:

12:2  Behold I will make Jerusalem a lintel of surfeiting to all the people round about: and Juda also shall be in the siege against Jerusalem.

12:3  And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone to all people: all that shall lift it up shall be rent and torn, and all the kingdoms of the earth shall be gathered together against her.

12:7  And the Lord shall save the tabernacles of Juda, as in the beginning: that the house of David, and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, may not boast and magnify themselves against Juda.

12:7  Et salvabit Dominus tabernacula Juda, sicut in principio, ut non magnifice glorietur domus David, et gloria habitantium Jerusalem contra Judam.

Chapter 13

13:1  In that day there shall be a fountain open to the house of David, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem: for the washing of the sinner, and of the unclean woman.

13:8  And there shall be in all the earth, saith the Lord, two parts in it shall be scattered, and shall perish: but the third part shall be left therein.

Chapter 14

14:1  Behold the days of the Lord shall come, and thy spoils shall be divided in the midst of thee.

14:5  And you shall flee to the valley of those mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall be joined even to the next, and you shall flee as you fled from the face of the earthquake in the days of Ozias king of Juda: and the Lord my God shall come, and all the saints with him.

14:11  And people shall dwell in it, and there shall be no more an anathema: but Jerusalem shall sit secure.

14:15  And so shall be the plague of the horse, of the mule, of the camel, and of the ass, and of all the beasts that shall be in these tents, as this plague.

14:15  Et sic erit ruina equi, et muli, et cameli, et asini, et omnium jumentorum quæ fuerint in castris illis, sicut ruina hæc.

14:16  And all they that shall be left of all nations that came against Jerusalem, shall go up from year to year, to adore the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

14:16  And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

14:16  Et omnes qui reliqui fuerint de universis gentibus quæ venerunt contra Jerusalem, ascendent ab anno in annum ut adorent regem, Dominum exercituum, et celebrent festivitatem tabernaculorum.

14:17  And it shall come to pass, that he that shall not go up of the families of the land to Jerusalem, to adore the King, the Lord of hosts, there shall be no rain upon them.

14:17  And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

14:17  Et erit : qui non ascenderit de familiis terræ ad Jerusalem ut adoret regem, Dominum exercituum, non erit super eos imber.

14:18  And if the family of Egypt go not up nor come: neither shall it be upon them, but there shall be destruction wherewith the Lord will strike all nations that will not go up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

14:18  And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

14:18  Quod etsi familia Ægypti non ascenderit et non venerit, nec super eos erit : sed erit ruina, qua percutiet Dominus omnes gentes quæ non ascenderint ad celebrandam festivitatem tabernaculorum.

14:19  This shall be the sin of Egypt, and this the sin of all nations, that will not go up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

14:20  In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE Lord; and the pots in the Lord’s house shall be like the bowls before the altar.

14:20  In die illa, erit quod super frenum equi est, sanctum Domino : et erunt lebetes in domo Domini quasi phialæ coram altari.

14:21  And every caldron in Jerusalem and Juda shall be sanctified to the Lord of hosts: and all that sacrifice shall come, and take of them, and shall seethe in them: and the merchant shall be no more in the house of the Lord of hosts in that day.

14:21  Yea, every pot in Jerusalem and in Judah shall be holiness unto the Lord of hosts: and all they that sacrifice shall come and take of them, and seethe therein: and in that day there shall be no more the Canaanite in the house of the Lord of hosts.

14:21  Et erit omnis lebes in Jerusalem et in Juda sanctificatus Domino exercituum : et venient omnes immolantes, et sument ex eis, et coquent in eis : et non erit mercator ultra in domo Domini exercituum in die illo.
