Chapter 1

1:1  Now Arphaxad king of the Medes had brought many nations under his dominions, and he built a very strong city, which he called Ecbatana,

1:1  Ve dvanáctém roce vlády asyrského krále Nabukadnezara vládnoucího ve velikém městě Ninive vybudoval médský král Arfaxad vládnoucí v Ekbatanech

1:1  Arphaxad itaque, rex Medorum, subjugaverat multas gentes imperio suo, et ipse ædificavit civitatem potentissimam, quam appellavit Ecbatanis,

1:2  Of stones squared and hewed: he made the walls thereof seventy cubits broad, and thirty cubits high, and the towers thereof he made a hundred cubits high. But on the square of them, each side was extended the space of twenty feet.

1:2  kolem svého města hradby. Z kamenných kvádrů tři lokte širokých a šest loktů dlouhých vystavěl hradby sedmdesát loktů vysoké a padesát loktů široké.

1:2  ex lapidibus quadratis et sectis : fecit muros ejus in altitudinem cubitorum septuaginta, et in latitudinem cubitorum triginta : turres vero ejus posuit in altitudinem cubitorum centum.

1:3  And he made the gates thereof according to the height of the towers:

1:3  Nad branami města vztyčil hradební věže do výšky sto loktů se základy šedesát loktů našíř.

1:3  Per quadrum vero earum latus utrumque vicenorum pedum spatio tendebatur, posuitque portas ejus in altitudinem turrium :

1:4  And he gloried as a mighty one in the force of his army and in the glory of his chariots.

1:4  Městské brány, které vystavěl, byly sedmdesát loktů vysoké a čtyřicet loktů široké, aby jimi mohla vyrážet jeho jízdní vojska i sešikovaná pěchota.

1:4  et gloriabatur quasi potens in potentia exercitus sui, et in gloria quadrigarum suarum.

1:5  Now in the twelfth year of his reign, Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, who reigned in Ninive the great city, fought against Arphaxad and overcame him,

1:5  V oněch dnech král Nabukadnezar rozpoutal na rozlehlé planině v kraji Ragau proti Arfaxadovi válku.

1:5  Anno igitur duodecimo regni sui, Nabuchodonosor rex Assyriorum, qui regnabat in Ninive civitate magna, pugnavit contra Arphaxad, et obtinuit eum

1:6  In the great plain which is called Ragua, about the Euphrates, and the Tigris, and the Jadason, in the plain of Erioch the king of the Elicians.

1:6  Na jeho stranu se ale postavili všichni obyvatelé hor a všichni, kdo bydleli podél Eufratu, Tigridu a Hydaspu a také v rovinách, kde vládl elymský král Arioch; do řad Cheleudovců se tak shromáždilo mnoho národů.

1:6  in campo magno qui appellatur Ragau, circa Euphraten, et Tigrin, et Jadason, in campo Erioch regis Elicorum.

1:7  Then was the kingdom of Nabuchodonosor exalted, and his heart was elevated: and he sent to all that dwelt in Cilicia and Damascus, and Libanus,

1:7  Asyrský král Nabukadnezar proto poslal ke všem obyvatelům Persie a ke všem, kdo žili na západě – k obyvatelům Kilikie, Damašku, Libanonu a Antilibanonu, ke všem, kdo žili podél mořského pobřeží,

1:7  Tunc exaltatum est regnum Nabuchodonosor, et cor ejus elevatum est : et misit ad omnes qui habitabant in Cilicia, et Damasco, et Libano,

1:8  And to the nations that are in Carmelus, and Cedar, and to the inhabitants of Galilee in the great plain of Asdrelon,

1:8  k národům na Karmelu, v Gileádu, v Horní Galileji i na veliké pláni Esdraelon,

1:8  et ad gentes quæ sunt in Carmelo et Cedar, et inhabitantes Galilæam in campo magno Esdrelon,

1:9  And to all that were in Samaria, and beyond the river Jordan even to Jerusalem, and all the land of Jesse till you come to the borders of Ethiopia.

1:9  ke všem obyvatelům Samaří a jeho měst, za Jordán k Jeruzalému, Bataně, Chelúsu, Kádeši a až k egyptské řece – k Dafné a Ramesesu a k celé zemi Gošen

1:9  et ad omnes qui erant in Samaria, et trans flumen Jordanem usque ad Jerusalem, et omnem terram Jesse quousque perveniatur ad terminos Æthiopiæ.

1:10  To all these Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, sent messengers:

1:10  až za Soan a Memfis, ke všem obyvatelům Egypta až k hranicím Etiopie.

1:10  Ad hos omnes misit nuntios Nabuchodonosor rex Assyriorum :

1:11  But they all with one mind refused, and sent them back empty, and rejected them without honour.

1:11  Obyvatelé všech těch zemí ale na výzvu asyrského krále Nabukadnezara nedbali a nepřišli válčit po jeho boku, protože se ho nebáli. Nepřikládali mu žádnou váhu a jeho posly poslali s nepořízenou potupně zpět. Nabukadnezar se tehdy velice rozhněval na celou zemi a přísahal při svém trůnu a při svém království, že se pomstí a že svým mečem vyplení všechny kraje Kilikie, Damašku a Sýrie i obyvatele Moábu a syny Amonovy, celé Judsko i obyvatele Egypta – všechny, kdo žili mezi oběma moři. V sedmnáctém roce vytáhl Nabukadnezar se svým vojskem proti králi Arfaxadovi do bitvy a porazil jej. Celé Arfaxadovo vojsko, celou jeho jízdu i všechny jeho vozy obrátil na útěk, zmocnil se jeho měst a došel až k Ekbatanám. Dobyl hradební věže, vydrancoval ulice města a jeho dřívější slávu obrátil v potupu. V horách Ragau pak zajal Arfaxada, probodal ho kopími a jednou provždy ho zničil. Pak se s vojskem a se všemi, kdo se k němu přidali – s celým tím ohromným množstvím válečníků – vrátil do Ninive a tam s celou svou armádou odpočíval a hodoval sto dvacet dní.

1:11  qui omnes uno animo contradixerunt, et remiserunt eos vacuos, et sine honore abjecerunt.

1:12  Then king Nabuchodonosor being angry against all that land, swore by his throne and kingdom that he would revenge himself of all those countries.

1:12  Tunc indignatus Nabuchodonosor rex adversus omnem terram illam, juravit per thronum et regnum suum quod defenderet se de omnibus regionibus his.

Chapter 2

2:1  In the thirteenth year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, the two and twentieth day of the first month, the word was given out in the house of Nabuchodonosor king of the Assyrians, that he would revenge himself.

2:1  Dvaadvacátého dne prvního měsíce osmnáctého roku se v paláci asyrského krále Nabukadnezara začalo mluvit o pomstě, kterou král předtím vyhlásil celé zemi.

2:1  Anno tertiodecimo Nabuchodonosor regis, vigesima et secunda die mensis primi, factum est verbum in domo Nabuchodonosor regis Assyriorum ut defenderet se.

2:2  And he called all the ancients, and all the governors, and his officers of war, and communicated to them the secret of his counsel:

2:2  Tehdy k sobě svolal všechny své dvořany a pohlaváry, vyložil před nimi svůj tajný záměr a osobně rozhodl, že všechny ty proradné země budou zpustošeny.

2:2  Vocavitque omnes majores natu, omnesque duces et bellatores suos, et habuit cum eis mysterium consilii sui :

2:3  And he said that his thoughts were to bring all the earth under his empire.

2:3  Schválili pak, že každý, kdo by se tím rozkazem neřídil, bude popraven.

2:3  dixitque cogitationem suam in eo esse, ut omnem terram suo subjugaret imperio.

2:4  And when this saying pleased them all, Nabuchodonosor, the king, called Holofernes the general of his armies,

2:4  Když asyrský král Nabukadnezar ukončil poradu, zavolal si vrchního velitele své armády Holoferna, který byl ve velení druhý po něm, a řekl mu:

2:4  Quod dictum cum placuisset omnibus, vocavit Nabuchodonosor rex Holofernem principem militiæ suæ,

2:5  And said to him: Go out against all the kingdoms of the west, and against them especially that despised my commandment.

2:5  „Tak praví Veliký král, pán vší země: Hle, vydej se na cestu a vezmi s sebou zkušené bojovníky – 120 000 pěších, 12 000 jezdců a množství koní.

2:5  et dixit ei : Egredere adversus omne regnum occidentis, et contra eos præcipue, qui contempserunt imperium meum.

2:6  Thy eye shall not spare any kingdom, and all the strong cities thou shalt bring under my yoke.

2:6  Vytáhni proti všem zemím na západě, kde neposlechli můj rozkaz.

2:6  Non parcet oculus tuus ulli regno, omnemque urbem munitam subjugabis mihi.

2:7  Then Holofernes called the captains, and officers of the power of the Assyrians: and he mustered men for the expedition, and the king commanded him, a hundred and twenty thousand fighting men on foot, and twelve thousand archers, horsemen.

2:7  Vyřiď jim, ať si připraví půdu a vodu, protože na ně přitáhnu s hněvem. Celou zemi pokryji nohama svých vojsk a vydám ji za kořist svým vojákům.

2:7  Tunc Holofernes vocavit duces et magistratus virtutis Assyriorum, et dinumeravit viros in expeditionem sicut præcepit ei rex, centum viginti millia peditum pugnatorum, et equitum sagittariorum duodecim millia.

2:8  And he made all his warlike preparations to go before with a multitude of innumerable camels, with all provisions sufficient for the armies in abundance, and herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep, without number.

2:8  Jejich údolí budou plná raněných, každý potok i řeku naplní jejich mrtvoly, až se vylijí z koryt,

2:8  Omnemque expeditionem suam fecit præire in multitudine innumerabilium camelorum, cum his quæ exercitibus sufficerent copiose, boum quoque armenta, gregesque ovium, quorum non erat numerus.

2:9  He appointed corn to be prepared out of all Syria in his passage.

2:9  a jejich zajatce odvleču do vyhnanství až na konec světa!

2:9  Frumentum ex omni Syria in transitu suo parari constituit.

2:10  But gold and silver he took out of the king's house in great abundance.

2:10  Půjdeš tedy napřed a dobudeš pro mne celé jejich území. Když se ti vzdají, uchováš mi je, dokud je nepotrestám.

2:10  Aurum vero et argentum de domo regis assumpsit multum nimis.

2:11  And he went forth he and all the army, with the chariots, and horsemen, and archers, who covered the face of the earth, like locusts.

2:11  S těmi, kdo se vzepřou, však neměj slitování – po celé té zemi je vydej napospas vraždění a loupení.

2:11  Et profectus est ipse, et omnis exercitus cum quadrigis, et equitibus, et sagittariis : qui cooperuerunt faciem terræ sicut locustæ.

2:12  And when he had passed through the borders of the Assyrians, he came to the great mountains of Ange, which are on the left of Cilicia: and he went up to all their castles, and took all the strong places.

2:12  Přísahám na svůj život a na sílu svého království: Toto jsem řekl a toto svou mocí vykonám!

2:12  Cumque pertransisset fines Assyriorum, venit ad magnos montes Ange, qui sunt a sinistro Ciliciæ : ascenditque omnia castella eorum, et obtinuit omnem munitionem.

2:13  And he took by assault the renowned city of Melothus, and pillaged all the children of Tharsis, and the children of Ismahel, who were over against the face of the desert, and on the south of the land of Cellon.

2:13  Nezanedbej žádný z rozkazů svého pána, ale svědomitě vykonej, co jsem ti nařídil, a to bezodkladně.“

2:13  Effregit autem civitatem opinatissimam Melothi, prædavitque omnes filios Tharsis et filios Ismaël qui erant contra faciem deserti, et ad austrum terræ Cellon.

2:14  And he passed over the Euphrates and came into Mesopotamia: and he forced all the stately cities that were there, from the torrent of Mambre, till one comes to the sea:

2:14  Holofernes se vzdálil od svého panovníka a svolal všechny velmože a velitele a náčelníky asyrské armády.

2:14  Et transivit Euphraten, et venit in Mesopotamiam : et fregit omnes civitates excelsas quæ erant ibi, a torrente Mambre usquequo perveniatur ad mare :

2:15  And he took the borders thereof, from Cilicia to the coasts of Japheth, which are towards the south.

2:15  Nashromáždil 120 000 vybraných mužů do bitevních šiků a 12 000 jízdních lukostřelců, jak mu panovník nařídil,

2:15  et occupavit terminos ejus, a Cilicia usque ad fines Japheth qui sunt ad austrum.

2:16  And he carried away all the children of Madian, and stripped them of all their riches, and all that resisted him he slew with the edge of the sword.

2:16  a uspořádal je tak, jak se šikuje vojsko do války.

2:16  Abduxitque omnes filios Madian, et prædavit omnem locupletationem eorum, omnesque resistentes sibi occidit in ore gladii.

2:17  And after these things he went down into the plains of Damascus in the days of the harvest, and he set all the corn on fire, and he caused all the trees and vineyards to be cut down.

2:17  Vzal s sebou veliké množství velbloudů, oslů a mezků k přepravě nákladu a bezpočet ovcí, krav a koz k zajištění potravy.

2:17  Et post hæc descendit in campos Damasci in diebus messis, et succendit omnia sata, omnesque arbores, et vineas fecit incidi :

2:18  And the fear of them fell upon all the inhabitants of the land.

2:18  Celému mužstvu zajistil hojné příděly potravin a spoustu zlata a stříbra z královského paláce. S celou tou armádou vyrazil na pochod. Vytáhl před králem Nabukadnezarem a celou západní zemi pokryl válečnými vozy, jezdci a elitní pěchotou. Doprovázel je početný a rozmanitý zástup – bylo jich jako kobylek nebo písku na zemi – takové množství, že nešlo ani spočítat. Po třech dnech pochodu z Ninive dorazili na pláň Bektilet. Za Bektiletem, poblíž hor na sever od Horní Kilikie, se utábořili. Pak vzal Holofernes celou svou armádu, pěchotu, jezdce i vozy, a vydal se odtamtud do hor. Zpustošil kraje Put a Lud a vydrancoval celou zemi synů Rasisových a synů Izmaelových na pomezí pouště jižně od Cheleonu. Překročil Eufrat, táhl Mezopotámií a bořil všechna města na výšinách podél potoku Abron, až dorazil k moři. Dobyl území Kilikie a vraždil všechny, kdo se mu postavili na odpor. Dorazil až k jižní hranici Jáfetova území, kde sousedí s Arábií. Obklíčil všechny Midiánce, vypálil jejich stany a vyplenil jejich ovčince. V době sklizně pšenice pak sestoupil na rovinu u Damašku, vypálil jim všechna pole, vyhubil stáda ovcí a skotu, vyraboval města, zpustošil venkov a všechny mladé muže pobil ostřím meče. Na obyvatele Týru a Sidonu při mořském pobřeží padl strach a hrůza, stejně jako na obyvatele Šuru a Okiny a na všechny obyvatele Jamnie. Také obyvatelé Ašdodu a Aškelonu se ho velice báli.

2:18  et cecidit timor illius super omnes inhabitantes terram.

Chapter 3

3:1  Then the kings and the princes of all the cities and provinces, of Syria, Mesopotamia, and Syria Sobal, and Libya, and Cilicia sent their ambassadors, who coming to Holofernes, said:

3:1  Poslali k němu proto posly s žádostí o mír:

3:1  Tunc miserunt legatos suos universarum urbium ac provinciarum reges ac principes, Syriæ scilicet Mesopotamiæ, et Syriæ Sobal, et Libyæ, atque Ciliciæ : qui venientes ad Holofernem, dixerunt :

3:2  Let thy indignation towards us cease, for it is better for us to live and serve Nabuchodonosor the great king, and be subject to thee, than to die and to perish, or suffer the miseries of slavery.

3:2  „Hle, jsme otroci velikého krále Nabukadnezara a ležíme u tvých nohou. Nalož s námi podle své libosti.

3:2  Desinat indignatio tua circa nos : melius est enim ut viventes serviamus Nabuchodonosor regi magno, et subditi simus tibi, quam morientes cum interitu nostro ipsi servitutis nostræ damna patiamur.

3:3  All our cities and our possessions, all mountains and hills, and fields, and herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep, and goats, and horses, and camels, and all our goods, and families are in thy sight:

3:3  Hle, naše statky a celé naše území, všechna pšeničná pole, naše stáda ovcí, náš skot, všechny ohrady i naše stany ti leží u nohou. Nalož s nimi, jak se ti zlíbí.

3:3  Omnis civitas nostra, omnisque possessio, omnes montes, et colles, et campi, et armenta boum, gregesque ovium, et caprarum, equorumque et camelorum, et universæ facultates nostræ atque familiæ, in conspectu tuo sunt :

3:4  Let all we have be subject to thy law,

3:4  Hle, i naše města a jejich obyvatelé jsou tvými otroky. Přijď a nalož s nimi, jak se ti zlíbí.“

3:4  sint omnia nostra sub lege tua.

3:5  Both we and our children are thy servants.

3:5  Poté, co ti muži přišli za Holofernem a přednesli mu své poselství,

3:5  Nos, et filii nostri, servi tui sumus.

3:6  Come to us a peaceable lord, and use our service as it shall please thee,

3:6  sestoupil se svou armádou k mořskému pobřeží. V opevněných městech rozmístil své posádky a tamní vybrané bojovníky odvedl do svých pomocných oddílů.

3:6  Veni nobis pacificus dominus, et utere servitio nostro, sicut placuerit tibi.

3:7  Then he came down from the mountains with horsemen, in great power, and made himself master of every city, and all the inhabitants of the land.

3:7  Lidé ve městech i v celé okolní krajině ho vítali s věnci a tančili s tamburínami.

3:7  Tunc descendit de montibus cum equitibus in virtute magna, et obtinuit omnem civitatem, et omnem inhabitantem terram.

3:8  And from all the cities he took auxiliaries valiant men, and chosen for war,

3:8  On ale zpustošil všechny jejich svatyně a vykácel jejich posvátné háje, protože dostal za úkol vyhladit všechny místní bohy, aby všechny národy uctívaly jen samotného Nabukadnezara a aby ho všechny jejich kmeny a všechny jazyky vzývaly jako boha.

3:8  De universis autem urbibus assumpsit sibi auxiliarios viros fortes, et electos ad bellum.

3:9  And so great a fear lay upon all those provinces, that the inhabitants of all the cities, both princes and nobles, as well as the people, went out to meet him at his coming.

3:9  Tak dorazil až na okraj pláně Esdraelon, poblíž Dotanu naproti mohutnému Judskému pohoří.

3:9  Tantusque metus provinciis illis incubuit, ut universarum urbium habitatores principes et honorati simul cum populis exirent obviam venienti,

3:10  And received him with garlands, and lights, and dances, and timbrels, and flutes.

3:10  Utábořil se mezi Gebou a Skythopolí a zdržel se tam celý měsíc, aby doplnil zásoby pro celou svou armádu.

3:10  excipientes eum cum coronis et lampadibus, ducentes choros in tympanis et tibiis.

3:11  And though they did these things, they could not for all that mitigate the fierceness of his heart:

3:11  Nec ista tamen facientes, ferocitatem ejus pectoris mitigare potuerunt :

3:12  For he both destroyed their cities, and cut down their groves.

3:12  nam et civitates eorum destruxit, et lucos eorum excidit.

3:13  For Nabuchodonosor the king had commanded him to destroy all the gods of the earth, that he only might be called God by those nations which could be brought under him by the power of Holofernes.

3:13  Præceperat enim illi Nabuchodonosor rex, ut omnes deos terræ exterminaret, videlicet ut ipse solus diceretur deus ab his nationibus quæ potuissent Holofernis potentia subjugari.

3:14  And when he had passed through all Syria Sobal, and all Apamea, and all Mesopotamia, he came to the Idumeans into the land of Gabaa,

3:14  Pertransiens autem Syriam Sobal, et omnem Apameam, omnemque Mesopotamiam, venit ad Idumæos in terram Gabaa,

3:15  And he took possession of their cities, and stayed there for thirty days, in which days he commanded all the troops of his army to be united.

3:15  accepitque civitates eorum, et sedit ibi per triginta dies, in quibus diebus adunari præcepit universum exercitum virtutis suæ.

Chapter 4

4:1  Then the children of Israel, who dwelt in the land of Juda, hearing these things, were exceedingly afraid of him.

4:1  Když se synové Izraele, žijící v Judsku, doslechli o všem, co vrchní velitel asyrského krále Nabukadnezara Holofernes způsobil těm národům, a o tom, jak vyplenil všechny jejich chrámy a zpustošil je,

4:1  Tunc audientes hæc filii Israël qui habitabant in terra Juda, timuerunt valde a facie ejus.

4:2  Dread and horror seized upon their minds, lest he should do the same to Jerusalem and to the temple of the Lord, that he had done to other cities and their temples.

4:2  zmocnil se jich strašlivý strach a začali se obávat o Jeruzalém a o chrám Hospodina, svého Boha.

4:2  Tremor et horror invasit sensus eorum, ne hoc faceret Jerusalem et templo Domini, quod fecerat ceteris civitatibus et templis earum.

4:3  And they sent into all Samaria round about, as far as Jericho, and seized upon all the tops of the mountains:

4:3  (Jen nedlouho předtím se totiž vrátili ze zajetí a teprve nedávno se všechen lid Judska znovu shromáždil, aby znovu zasvětil chrám, oltář i chrámové náčiní poté, co to vše bylo znesvěceno.)

4:3  Et miserunt in omnem Samariam per circuitum usque Jericho, et præoccupaverunt omnes vertices montium :

4:4  And they compassed their towns with walls and gathered together corn for provision for war.

4:4  Poslali proto rozkazy do celého Samařska, do Kony a Bet-choronu, Abel-majimu a Jericha, do Choby a Aisoru i do údolí Salem.

4:4  et muris circumdederunt vicos suos, et congregaverunt frumenta in præparationem pugnæ.

4:5  And Eliachim the priest wrote to all that were over against Esdrelon, which faceth the great plain near Dothain, and to all by whom there might be a passage of way,

4:5  Rychle obsadili všechny horské vrcholy, opevnili tamní vesnice a připravili válečné zásoby potravin, protože na polích právě skončila sklizeň.

4:5  Sacerdos etiam Eliachim scripsit ad universos qui erant contra Esdrelon, quæ est contra faciem campi magni juxta Dothain, et universos per quos viæ transitus esse poterat,

4:6  that they should take possession of the ascents of the mountains, by which there might be any way to Jerusalem, and should keep watch where the way was narrow between the mountains.

4:6  Velekněz Joakim, který byl v těch dnech v Jeruzalémě, pak napsal obyvatelům Betulie a Betomestaimu (které leží naproti Esdraelonu u ústí pláně poblíž Dotanu),

4:6  ut obtinerent ascensus montium, per quos via esse poterat ad Jerusalem, et illic custodirent ubi angustum iter esse poterat inter montes.

4:7  And the children of Israel did as the priests of the Lord Eliachim had appointed them.

4:7  aby obsadili horské průsmyky, jimiž vede jediný přístup do Judska. Zde bylo možné postupující nepřátele snadno zastavit, protože těmi soutěskami mohli najednou projít nanejvýš dva muži.

4:7  Et fecerunt filii Israël secundum quod constituerat eis sacerdos Domini Eliachim.

4:8  And all the people cried to the Lord with great earnestness, and they humbled their souls in fastings, and prayers, both they and their wives.

4:8  Synové Izraele se tedy zachovali podle rozkazů velekněze Joakima a rady starších celého izraelského lidu, která zasedala v Jeruzalémě.

4:8  Et clamavit omnis populus ad Dominum instantia magna, et humiliaverunt animas suas in jejuniis et orationibus, ipsi et mulieres eorum.

4:9  And the priests put on haircloths, and they caused the little children to lie prostrate before the temple of the Lord, and the altar of the Lord they covered with haircloth.

4:9  Všichni izraelští muži začali s velikou horlivostí volat k Bohu a pokořovali se před ním přísným postem.

4:9  Et induerunt se sacerdotes ciliciis, et infantes prostraverunt contra faciem templi Domini, et altare Domini operuerunt cilicio :

4:10  And they cried to the Lord the God of Israel with one accord, that their children might not be made a prey, and their wives carried off, and their cities destroyed, and their holy things profaned, and that they might not be made a reproach to the Gentiles.

4:10  Oni i jejich ženy a děti, jejich chovná zvířata i každý host, námezdný dělník a otrok, všichni se opásali pytlovinou.

4:10  et clamaverunt ad Dominum Deum Israël unanimiter ne darentur in prædam infantes eorum, et uxores eorum in divisionem, et civitates eorum in exterminium, et sancta eorum in pollutionem, et fierent opprobrium gentibus.

4:11  Then Eliachim the high priest of the Lord went about all Israel and spoke to them,

4:11  Všichni izraelští muži žijící v Jeruzalémě i jejich ženy a děti padli na tvář před chrámem, sypali si hlavy popelem a rozprostírali před Hospodinem svůj šat z pytloviny.

4:11  Tunc Eliachim sacerdos Domini magnus circuivit omnem Israël, allocutusque est eos,

4:12  Saying: Know ye that the Lord will hear your prayers, if you continue with perseverance in fastings and prayers in the sight of the Lord.

4:12  Dokonce zahalili do pytloviny i oltář a začali jedním hlasem naléhavě volat k Bohu Izraele, aby nevydal jejich děti za kořist a jejich ženy napospas a aby nenechal zničit jejich dědičná města a znesvětit a zneuctít jejich posvátná místa, pohanům na posměch.

4:12  dicens : Scitote quoniam exaudiet Dominus preces vestras, si manentes permanseritis in jejuniis et orationibus in conspectu Domini.

4:13  Remember Moses the servant of the Lord overcame Amalec that trusted in his own strength, and in his power, and in his army, and in his shields, and in his chariots, and in his horsemen, not by fighting with the sword, but by holy prayers:

4:13  A Hospodin vyslyšel jejich hlas a shlédl na jejich trápení. Po celém Judsku a také v Jeruzalémě před chrámem Všemohoucího Pána se totiž lidé mnoho dní postili.

4:13  Memores estote Moysi servi Domini, qui Amalec confidentem in virtute sua, et in potentia sua, et in exercitu suo, et in clypeis suis, et in curribus suis, et in equitibus suis, non ferro pugnando, sed precibus sanctis orando dejecit :

4:14  So all the enemies of Israel be, if you persevere in this work which you have begun.

4:14  Velekněz Joakim a všichni kněží, kteří stojí před Hospodinem a slouží mu, přinášeli každodenní zápalnou oběť i záslibné a dobrovolné oběti lidu přepásáni pytlovinou. S popelem na svých turbanech volali ze všech sil k Hospodinu, aby se ve své dobrotivosti smiloval nad celým domem Izraele.

4:14  sic erunt universi hostes Israël, si perseveraveritis in hoc opere quod cœpistis.

4:15  So they being moved by this exhortation of his, prayed to the Lord, and continued in the sight of the Lord.

4:15  Ad hanc igitur exhortationem ejus deprecantes Dominum, permanebant in conspectu Domini,

4:16  So that even they who offered the holocausts to the Lord, offered the sacrifices to the Lord girded with haircloths, and with ashes upon their head.

4:16  ita ut etiam hi qui offerebant Domino holocausta, præcincti ciliciis offerrent sacrificia Domino, et erat cinis super capita eorum.

4:17  And they all begged of God with all their heart, that he would visit his people Israel.

4:17  Et ex toto corde suo omnes orabant Deum, ut visitaret populum suum Israël.

Chapter 5

5:1  And it was told Holofernes the general of the army of the Assyrians, that the children of Israel prepared themselves to resist, and had shut up the ways of the mountains.

5:1  Když Holofernes, vrchní velitel asyrské armády, dostal zprávu, že se Izraelci připravili k boji – že uzavřeli horské průsmyky, opevnili všechny vysoké vrcholy a na pláních postavili zátarasy –

5:1  Nuntiatumque est Holoferni principi militiæ Assyriorum, quod filii Israël præpararent se ad resistendum, ac montium itinera conclusissent :

5:2  And he was transported with exceeding great fury and indignation, and he called all the princes of Moab and the leaders of Ammon.

5:2  velice se rozzuřil. Zavolal si všechny moábské vůdce, amonské velitele i všechny satrapy přímořských oblastí

5:2  et furore nimio exarsit in iracundia magna, vocavitque omnes principes Moab et duces Ammon,

5:3  And he said to them: Tell me what is this people that besetteth the mountains: or what are their cities, and of what sort, and how great: also what is their power, or what is their multitude: or who is the king over their warfare:

5:3  a řekl jim: „Vysvětlete mi, Kanaánci, co je to za lid, který bydlí v těch horách? Co je to za města, která obývá? Jak velikou mají armádu a v čem spočívá jejich síla a moc? Co je to za krále, který jim vládne a velí jejich vojsku?

5:3  et dixit eis : Dicite mihi quis sit populus iste, qui montana obsidet : aut quæ, et quales, et quantæ sint civitates eorum : quæ etiam sit virtus eorum, aut quæ sit multitudo eorum, vel quis rex militiæ illorum :

5:4  And why they above all that dwell in the east, have despised us, and have not come out to meet us, that they might receive us with peace?

5:4  Jak to, že se mi nepřišli vzdát, tak jako všichni obyvatelé západu?“

5:4  et quare præ omnibus qui habitant in oriente, isti contempserunt nos, et non exierunt obviam nobis ut susciperent nos cum pace ?

5:5  Then Achior captain of all the children of Ammon answering, said; If thou vouchsafe, my lord, to hear, I will tell the truth in thy sight concerning this people, that dwelleth in the mountains, and there shall not a false word come out of my mouth.

5:5  Achior, vůdce všech Amonců, mu odpověděl: „Vyslechni, pane můj, řeč svého otroka. Povím ti pravdu o lidu, který bydlí v těchto horách naproti tobě. Z úst tvého otroka nevyjde žádná lež.

5:5  Tunc Achior dux omnium filiorum Ammon respondens, ait : Si digneris audire, domine mi, dicam veritatem in conspectu tuo de populo isto qui in montanis habitat, et non egredietur verbum falsum ex ore meo.

5:6  This people is of the offspring of the Chaldeans.

5:6  Tento lid pochází z Chaldejců.

5:6  Populus iste ex progenie Chaldæorum est.

5:7  They dwelt first in Mesopotamia, because they would not follow the gods of their fathers, who were in the land of the Chaldeans.

5:7  Kdysi se přestěhovali do Mezopotámie, protože nechtěli následovat bohy svých otců narozených v zemi Chaldejců.

5:7  Hic primum in Mesopotamia habitavit, quoniam noluerunt sequi deos patrum suorum, qui erant in terra Chaldæorum.

5:8  Wherefore forsaking the ceremonies of their fathers, which consisted in the worship of many gods,

5:8  Opustili cestu svých předků a začali uctívat Boha nebes – boha, kterého poznali. Když je proto vyhnali od tváře svých bohů, utekli do Mezopotámie a pobývali tam dlouhý čas.

5:8  Deserentes itaque cæremonias patrum suorum, quæ in multitudine deorum erant,

5:9  They worshipped one God of heaven, who also commanded them to depart from thence, and to dwell in Charan. And when there was a famine over all the land, they went down into Egypt, and there for four hundred years were so multiplied, that the army of them could not be numbered.

5:9  Jejich bůh jim ale řekl, ať z té cizí země odejdou a vydají se do země Kanaán. Zde se usadili a nahromadili množství zlata, stříbra i dobytka.

5:9  unum Deum cæli coluerunt, qui et præcepit eis ut exirent inde et habitarent in Charan. Cumque operuisset omnem terram fames, descenderunt in Ægyptum, illicque per quadringentos annos sic multiplicati sunt, ut dinumerari eorum non posset exercitus.

5:10  And when the king of Egypt oppressed them, and made slaves of them to labour in clay and brick, in the building of his cities, they cried to their Lord, and he struck the whole land of Egypt with divers plagues.

5:10  Potom odešli do Egypta, protože kanaánskou zemi postihl hlad. Žili tam, dokud měli co jíst, a tak se tam rozmnožili, že jejich potomstvo nešlo ani spočítat.

5:10  Cumque gravaret eos rex Ægypti, atque in ædificationibus urbium suarum in luto et latere subjugasset eos, clamaverunt ad Dominum suum, et percussit totam terram Ægypti plagis variis.

5:11  And when the Egyptians had cast them out from them, and the plague had ceased from them, and they had a mind to take them again, and bring them back to their service,

5:11  Egyptský král se ale postavil proti nim a lstivě je přinutil vyrábět cihly. Ponižovali je a zotročovali,

5:11  Cumque ejecissent eos Ægyptii a se, et cessasset plaga ab eis, et iterum eos vellent capere, et ad suum servitium revocare,

5:12  The God of heaven opened the sea to them in their flight, so that the waters were made to stand firm as a wall on either side, and they walked through the bottom of the sea and passed it dry foot.

5:12  ale oni volali k svému bohu, a on celou egyptskou zemi zasáhl ranami, proti kterým nebylo léku. Egypťané je proto od sebe vyhnali.

5:12  fugientibus his, Deus cæli mare aperuit, ita ut hinc inde aquæ quasi murus solidarentur, et isti pede sicco fundum maris perambulando transirent.

5:13  And when an innumerable army of the Egyptians pursued after them in that place, they were so overwhelmed with the waters, that there was not one left, to tell what had happened to posterity.

5:13  Bůh pak před nimi vysušil Rudé moře

5:13  In quo loco dum innumerabilis exercitus Ægyptiorum eos persequeretur, ita aquis coopertus est, ut non remaneret vel unus, qui factum posteris nuntiaret.

5:14  After they came out of the Red Sea, they abode in the deserts of mount Sina, in which never man could dwell, or son of man rested.

5:14  a vyvedl je směrem k Sinaji a Kádeš-barné. Vyhnali všechny obyvatele pouště,

5:14  Egressi vero mare Rubrum, deserta Sina montis occupaverunt, in quibus numquam homo habitare potuit, vel filius hominis requievit.

5:15  There bitter fountains were made sweet for them to drink, and for forty years they received food from heaven.

5:15  usadili se v zemi Emorejců a svou silou vyhladili všechny Chešbonce. Pak přešli Jordán a zabrali celé toto pohoří.

5:15  Illic fontes amari obdulcati sunt eis ad bibendum, et per annos quadraginta annonam de cælo consecuti sunt.

5:16  Wheresoever they went in without bow and arrow, and without shield and sword, their God fought for them and overcame.

5:16  Vyhnali před sebou Kanaánce, Perizejce, Jebusejce, Šechemské i všechny Girgašejce a žili tam dlouhý čas.

5:16  Ubicumque ingressi sunt sine arcu et sagitta, et absque scuto et gladio, Deus eorum pugnavit pro eis, et vicit.

5:17  And there was no one that triumphed over this people, but when they departed from the worship of the Lord their God.

5:17  Jejich bůh nenávidí nepravost, a tak dokud před ním nehřešili, vedlo se jim dobře.

5:17  Et non fuit qui insultaret populo isti, nisi quando recessit a cultu Domini Dei sui.

5:18  But as often as beside their own God, they worshipped any other, they were given to spoil and to the sword, and to reproach.

5:18  Když pak sešli z cesty, kterou jim určil, obrovské množství jich padlo v mnoha válkách a zbytek odvlekli do vyhnanství v cizí zemi. Chrám jejich boha byl srovnán se zemí a měst se zmocnili jejich nepřátelé.

5:18  Quotiescumque autem præter ipsum Deum suum, alterum coluerunt, dati sunt in prædam, et in gladium, et in opprobrium.

5:19  And as often as they were penitent for having revolted from the worship of their God, the God of heaven gave them power to resist.

5:19  Teď se ale znovu obrátili ke svému bohu a vrátili se zpět z míst, kam byli rozptýleni. Znovu ovládli Jeruzalém, kde stojí jejich svatyně, a usadili se na svých horách, předtím opuštěných.

5:19  Quotiescumque autem pœnituerunt se recessisse a cultura Dei sui, dedit eis Deus cæli virtutem resistendi.

5:20  So they overthrew the king of the Chanaanites, and of the Jebusites, and of the Pherezites, and of the Hethites, and of the Hevites, and of the Amorrhites, and all the mighty ones in Hesebon, and they possessed their lands, and their cities:

5:20  Nuže, můj pane a vládce, jestliže ten lid hřeší proti svému bohu, byť i nevědomky, a my se přesvědčíme o jejich poklesku, pak pojďme a vyhlasme jim válku.

5:20  Denique Chananæum regem, et Jebusæum, et Pherezæum, et Hethæum, et Hevæum, et Amorrhæum, et omnes potentes in Hesebon prostraverunt, et terras eorum et civitates eorum ipsi possederunt :

5:21  And as long as they sinned not in the sight of their God, it was well with them: for their God hateth iniquity.

5:21  Jestliže se ale ten národ neprovinil, pak si jich, můj pane, raději nevšímej. Jinak je jejich pán a bůh zaštítí a my budeme celému světu na posměch.“

5:21  et usque dum non peccarent in conspectu Dei sui, erant cum illis bona : Deus enim illorum odit iniquitatem.

5:22  And even some years ago when they had revolted from the way which God had given them to walk therein, they were destroyed in battles by many nations and very many of them were led away captive into a strange land.

5:22  Když Achior dokončil tuto řeč, všechen lid shromážděný kolem velitelova stanu začal reptat. Holofernovi pohlaváři i všichni obyvatelé mořského pobřeží a také Moábci Holoferna žádali, aby ho dal rozsekat:

5:22  Nam et ante hos annos cum recessissent a via quam dederat illis Deus ut ambularent in ea, exterminati sunt præliis a multis nationibus, et plurimi eorum captivi abducti sunt in terram non suam.

5:23  But of late returning to the Lord their God, from the different places wherein they were scattered, they are come together and are gone up into all these mountains, and possess Jerusalem again, where their holies are.

5:23  „Přece se nebudeme bát Izraelců! Jen se podívej – vždyť je to bezmocný lid, na pořádný odpor se nezmůžou.

5:23  Nuper autem reversi ad Dominum Deum suum, ex dispersione qua dispersi fuerant, adunati sunt, et ascenderunt montana hæc omnia, et iterum possident Jerusalem, ubi sunt sancta eorum.

5:24  Now therefore, my lord, search if there be any iniquity of theirs in the sight of their God: let us go up to them, because their God will surely deliver them to thee, and they shall be brought under the yoke of thy power:

5:24  Pojďme na ně, Holoferne, pane náš! Tvé mohutné vojsko je zhltne jako nic!“

5:24  Nunc ergo mi domine, perquire si est aliqua iniquitas eorum in conspectu Dei eorum : ascendamus ad illos, quoniam tradens tradet illos Deus eorum tibi, et subjugati erunt sub jugo potentiæ tuæ.

5:25  But if there be no offence of this people in the sight of their God, we cannot resist them because their God will defend them: and we shall be a reproach to the whole earth.

5:25  Si vero non est offensio populi hujus coram Deo suo, non poterimus resistere illis, quoniam Deus eorum defendet illos : et erimus in opprobrium universæ terræ.

5:26  And it came to pass, when Achior had ceased to speak these words, all the great men of Holofernes were angry, and they had a mind to kill him, saying to each other:

5:26  Et factum est, cum cessasset loqui Achior verba hæc, irati sunt omnes magnates Holofernis, et cogitabant interficere eum, dicentes ad alterutrum :

5:27  Who is this, that saith the children of Israel can resist king Nabuchodonosor, and his armies, men unarmed, and without force, and without skill in the art of war?

5:27  Quis est iste, qui filios Israël posse dicat resistere regi Nabuchodonosor et exercitibus ejus, homines inermes, et sine virtute, et sine peritia artis pugnæ ?

5:28  That Achior therefore may know that he deceiveth us, let us go up into the mountains: and when the bravest of them shall be taken, then shall he with them be stabbed with the sword,

5:28  Ut ergo agnoscat Achior quoniam fallit nos, ascendamus in montana : et cum capti fuerint potentes eorum, tunc cum eisdem gladio transverberabitur :

5:29  That every nation may know that Nabuchodonosor is god of the earth, and besides him there is no other.

5:29  ut sciat omnis gens quoniam Nabuchodonosor deus terræ est, et præter ipsum alius non est.

Chapter 6

6:1  And it came to pass when they had left off speaking, that Holofernes being in a violent passion, said to Achior:

6:1  Když muži okolo poradního shromáždění přestali povykovat, vrchní velitel asyrské armády Holofernes se na Achiora před všemi nastoupenými cizinci i Amonci obořil:

6:1  Factum est autem cum cessassent loqui, indignatus Holofernes vehementer, dixit ad Achior :

6:2  Because thou hast prophesied unto us, saying: That the nation of Israel is defended by their God, to shew thee that there is no God, but Nabuchodonosor:

6:2  „A ty jsi kdo, Achiore, s těmi svými efraimskými žoldáky, že nám tu prorokuješ? Že prý nemáme válčit proti Izraelcům, že je prý jejich bůh zaštítí! Copak je nějaký bůh kromě Nabukadnezara? Až ukáže svou moc, vyhladí je z povrchu země a jejich bůh je nezachrání.

6:2  Quoniam prophetasti nobis, dicens quod gens Israël defendatur a Deo suo, ut ostendam tibi quoniam non est deus nisi Nabuchodonosor,

6:3  When we shall slay them all as one man, then thou also shalt die with them by the sword of the Assyrians, and all Israel shall perish with thee:

6:3  Jsme královští služebníci, porazíme je jako jednoho muže! Neobstojí před silou naší jízdy,

6:3  cum percusserimus eos omnes, sicut hominem unum, tunc et ipse cum illis Assyriorum gladio interibis, et omnis Israël tecum perditione disperiet :

6:4  And thou shalt find that Nabuchodonosor is lord of the whole earth: and then the sword of my soldiers shall pass through thy sides, and thou shalt be stabbed and fall among the wounded of Israel, and thou shalt breathe no more till thou be destroyed with them.

6:4  kterou je smeteme! Jejich hory se zpijí jejich krví a jejich pláně naplní jejich mrtvoly. Po našem útoku po nich nezbude ani stopy, až do posledního budou zničeni! Tak praví král Nabukadnezar, pán vší země. Tak promluvil a žádné z jeho slov nevyjde naprázdno.

6:4  et probabis quoniam Nabuchodonosor dominus sit universæ terræ : tuncque gladius militiæ meæ transiet per latera tua, et confixus cades inter vulneratos Israël, et non respirabis ultra, donec extermineris cum illis.

6:5  But if thou think thy prophecy true, let not thy countenance sink, and let the paleness that is in thy face, depart from thee, if thou imaginest these my words cannot be accomplished.

6:5  A ty, Achiore, žoldáku amonský, který jsi dnes těmito slovy projevil svou zvrhlost, od této chvíle už neuvidíš mou tvář, dokud tu egyptskou sebranku neztrestám.

6:5  Porro autem si prophetiam tuam veram existimas, non concidat vultus tuus : et pallor qui faciem tuam obtinet abscedat a te, si verba mea hæc putas impleri non posse.

6:6  And that thou mayst know that thou shalt experience these things together with them, behold from this hour thou shalt be associated to their people, that when they shall receive the punishment they deserve from my sword, thou mayst fall under the same vengeance.

6:6  Až se pak vrátím, meč mého vojska a kopí mých služebníků probodne tvé boky a padneš jako jedna z jejich obětí.

6:6  Ut autem noveris quia simul cum illis hæc experieris, ecce ex hac hora illorum populo sociaberis, ut, dum dignas mei gladii pœnas exceperint, ipse simul ultioni subjaceas.

6:7  Then Holofernes commanded his servants to take Achior, and to lead him to Bethulia, and to deliver him into the hands of the children of Israel.

6:7  Prozatím tě ale mí služebníci odvedou do hor a nechají tě v jednom z měst v těch průsmycích.

6:7  Tunc Holofernes præcepit servis suis ut comprehenderent Achior, et perducerent eum in Bethuliam, et traderent eum in manus filiorum Israël.

6:8  And the servants of Holofernes taking him, went through the plains: but when they came near the mountains, the slingers came out against them.

6:8  Nezahyneš, dokud tě nestihne jejich záhuba.

6:8  Et accipientes eum servi Holofernis, profecti sunt per campestria : sed cum appropinquassent ad montana, exierunt contra eos fundibularii.

6:9  Then turning out of the way by the side of the mountain, they tied Achior to a tree hand and foot, and so left him bound with ropes, and returned to their master.

6:9  A netvař se tak sklíčeně – vždyť přece v nitru doufáš, že se těch měst nezmocním. Tak jsem promluvil a žádné z mých slov nepadne nadarmo.“

6:9  Illi autem divertentes a latere montis, ligaverunt Achior ad arborem manibus et pedibus, et sic vinctum restibus dimiserunt eum, et reversi sunt ad dominum suum.

6:10  And the children of Israel coming down from Bethulia, came to him, and loosing him they brought him to Bethulia, and setting him in the midst of the people, asked him what was the matter that the Assyrians had left him bound.

6:10  Holofernes pak nařídil mužům, kteří sloužili v jeho stanu, ať Achiora vezmou, odvedou ho do Betulie a předají do rukou Izraelcům.

6:10  Porro filii Israël descendentes de Bethulia, venerunt ad eum : quem solventes, duxerunt ad Bethuliam, atque in medium populi illum statuentes, percunctati sunt quid rerum esset quod illum vinctum Assyrii reliquissent.

6:11  In those days the rulers there, were Ozias the son of Micha of the tribe of Simeon, and Charmi, called also Gothoniel.

6:11  Služebníci se ho tedy chopili, vyvedli ho z tábora na otevřenou pláň a z té pláně ho vlekli do hor, až přišli k pramenům pod Betulií.

6:11  In diebus illis erant illic principes Ozias filius Micha de tribu Simeon, et Charmi, qui et Gothoniel.

6:12  And Achior related in the midst of the ancients, and in the presence of all the people, all that he had said being asked by Holofernes: and how the people of Holofernes would have killed him for this word,

6:12  Když je muži z města uviděli, vzali zbraně a vyběhli z města na vrchol hory. Ostatní zatím vrhali z praků kameny, aby Holofernovým služebníkům zabránili ve výstupu.

6:12  In medio itaque seniorum, et in conspectu omnium, Achior dixit omnia quæ locutus ipse fuerat ab Holoferne interrogatus : et qualiter populus Holofernis voluisset propter hoc verbum interficere eum,

6:13  And how Holofernes himself being angry had commanded him to be delivered for this cause to the Israelites: that when he should overcome the children of Israel, then he might command Achior also himself to be put to death by diverse torments, for having said: The God of heaven is their defender.

6:13  Ti se tedy schovali pod horou, Achiora svázali, nechali ho ležet na úpatí a vrátili se ke svému pánovi.

6:13  et quemadmodum ipse Holofernes iratus jusserit eum Israëlitis hac de causa tradi, ut dum vicerit filios Israël, tunc et ipsum Achior diversis jubeat interire suppliciis, propter hoc quod dixisset : Deus cæli defensor eorum est.

6:14  And when Achior had declared all these things, all the people fell upon their faces, adoring the Lord, and all of them together mourning and weeping poured out their prayers with one accord to the Lord,

6:14  Izraelci pak sestoupili z města až k němu, rozvázali ho a odvedli do Betulie před městské předáky.

6:14  Cumque Achior universa hæc exposuisset, omnis populus cecidit in faciem, adorantes Dominum, et communi lamentatione et fletu unanimes preces suas Domino effuderunt,

6:15  Saying: O Lord God of heaven and earth, behold their pride, and look on our low condition, and have regard to the face of thy saints, and shew that thou forsakest not them that trust on thee, and that thou humblest them that presume of themselves, and glory in their own strength.

6:15  V oněch dnech to byli Uziáš, syn Míkův z kmene Šimeonova, Chabris, syn Gothonielův, a Charmis, syn Melchielův.

6:15  dicentes : Domine Deus cæli et terræ, intuere superbiam eorum, et respice ad nostram humilitatem, et faciem sanctorum tuorum attende, et ostende quoniam non derelinquis præsumentes de te : et præsumentes de se, et de sua virtute gloriantes, humilias.

6:16  So when their weeping was ended, and the people's prayer, in which they continued all the day, was concluded, they comforted Achior,

6:16  Svolali všechny starší města a na shromáždění se seběhli i všichni jejich mladíci a ženy. Postavili Achiora před všechen lid a Uziáš se ho zeptal, co se přihodilo.

6:16  Finito itaque fletu, et per totam diem oratione populorum completa, consolati sunt Achior,

6:17  Saying: The God of our fathers, whose power thou hast set forth, will make this return to thee, that thou rather shalt see their destruction.

6:17  On jim pak vyprávěl, co se odehrálo před Holofernovou radou – co všechno pověděl asyrským vůdcům a také to, jak pyšně se Holofernes chvástal proti domu Izraele.

6:17  dicentes : Deus patrum nostrorum, cujus tu virtutem prædicasti, ipse tibi hanc dabit vicissitudinem, ut eorum magis tu interitum videas.

6:18  And when the Lord our God shall give this liberty to his servants, let God be with thee also in the midst of us: that as it shall please thee, so thou with all thine mayst converse with us.

6:18  Nato lid padl k zemi a klaněl se Bohu s voláním:

6:18  Cum vero Dominus Deus noster dederit hanc libertatem servis suis, sit et tecum Deus in medio nostri : ut sicut placuerit tibi, ita cum tuis omnibus converseris nobiscum.

6:19  Then Ozias, after the assembly was broken up, received him into his house, and made him a great supper.

6:19  „Hospodine, Bože nebes, pohleď na jejich pýchu! Smiluj se nad naším poníženým národem a shlédni dnes laskavě na ty, kdo se ti zasvětili.“

6:19  Tunc Ozias, finito consilio, suscepit eum in domum suam, et fecit ei cœnam magnam.

6:20  And all the ancients were invited, and they refreshed themselves together after their fast was over.

6:20  Potom Achiora povzbudili a velmi ho chválili. Uziáš ho po shromáždění vzal k sobě domů, uspořádal tam hostinu pro městské starší a celou tu noc volali k Bohu Izraele o pomoc.

6:20  Et vocatis omnibus presbyteris, simul expleto jejunio refecerunt.

6:21  And afterwards all the people were called together, and they prayed all the night long within the church, desiring help of the God of Israel.

6:21  Postea vero convocatus est omnis populus, et per totam noctem intra ecclesiam oraverunt, petentes auxilium a Deo Israël.

Chapter 7

7:1  But Holofernes on the next day gave orders to his army, to go up against Bethulia.

7:1  Nazítří pak Holofernes přikázal celé své armádě i všem, kdo se k němu přidali jako spojenci, ať vytáhnou proti Betulii, obsadí horské průsmyky a pustí se do boje proti Izraelcům.

7:1  Holofernes autem altera die præcepit exercitibus suis ut ascenderent contra Bethuliam.

7:2  Now there were in his troops a hundred and twenty thousand footmen, and two and twenty thousand horsemen, besides the preparations of those men who had been taken, and who had been brought away out of the provinces and cities of all the youth.

7:2  Toho dne se všichni bojeschopní muži vydali na pochod. Jejich armáda čítala 180 000 pěších a 12 000 jezdců, nepočítáme-li zásobování a nesmírné množství doprovodných pěších jednotek.

7:2  Erant autem pedites bellatorum centum viginti millia, et equites viginti duo millia, præter præparationes virorum illorum quos occupaverat captivitas, et abducti fuerant de provinciis et urbibus universæ juventutis.

7:3  All these prepared themselves together to fight against the children of Israel, and they came by the hillside to the top, which looketh toward Dothain, from the place which is called Belma, unto Chelmon, which is over against Esdrelon.

7:3  Utábořili se u pramene v údolí poblíž Betulie a jejich ležení sahalo na šířku od Dotanu až k Balbaimu a na délku od Betulie až po Kiamon, který leží naproti Esdraelonu.

7:3  Omnes paraverunt se pariter ad pugnam contra filios Israël, et venerunt per crepidinem montis usque ad apicem, qui respicit super Dothain, a loco qui dicitur Belma usque ad Chelmon, qui est contra Esdrelon.

7:4  But the children of Israel, when they saw the multitude of them, prostrated themselves upon the ground, putting ashes upon their heads, praying with one accord, that the God of Israel would shew his mercy upon his people.

7:4  Když Izraelci uviděli, kolik jich je, velmi se zhrozili a říkali jeden druhému: „Brzy spolykají celou zem! Vysoké hory, údolí ani návrší neobstojí před jejich náporem.“

7:4  Filii autem Israël, ut viderunt multitudinem illorum, prostraverunt se super terram, mittentes cinerem super capita sua, unanimes orantes ut Deus Israël misericordiam suam ostenderet super populum suum.

7:5  And taking their arms of war, they posted themselves at the places, which by a narrow pathway lead directly between the mountains, and they guarded them all day and night.

7:5  Všichni se pak chopili zbraní, na věžích zapálili hranice a celou noc zůstali na stráži.

7:5  Et assumentes arma sua bellica, sederunt per loca quæ ad angusti itineris tramitem dirigunt inter montosa, et erant custodientes ea tota die et nocte.

7:6  Now Holofernes, in going round about, found that the fountain which supplied them with water, ran through an aqueduct without the city on the south side: and he commanded their aqueduct to be cut off.

7:6  Druhého dne vyrazil Holofernes s celou svou jízdou před zraky Izraelců bydlících v Betulii.

7:6  Porro Holofernes, dum circuit per gyrum, reperit quod fons qui influebat, aquæductum illorum a parte australi extra civitatem dirigeret : et incidi præcepit aquæductum illorum.

7:7  Nevertheless there were springs not far from the walls, out of which they were seen secretly to draw water, to refresh themselves a little rather than to drink their fill.

7:7  Prozkoumal přístupy k městu, vypátral vodní prameny a obsadil je a rozmístil u nich bojové jednotky. Když se pak vrátil ke svému hlavnímu voji,

7:7  Erant tamen non longe a muris fontes, ex quibus furtim videbantur haurire aquam ad refocillandum potius quam ad potandum.

7:8  But the children of Ammon and Moab came to Holofernes, saying: The children of Israel trust not in their spears, nor in their arrows, but the mountains are their defence, and the steep hills and precipices guard them.

7:8  přišli za ním všichni edomští náčelníci, moábští vůdci i velitelé od pobřeží a řekli mu:

7:8  Sed filii Ammon et Moab accesserunt ad Holofernem, dicentes : Filii Israël non in lancea nec in sagitta confidunt, sed montes defendunt illos, et muniunt illos colles in præcipitio constituti.

7:9  Wherefore that thou mayst overcome them without joining battle, set guards at the springs that they may not draw water out of them, and thou shalt destroy them without sword, or at least being wearied out they will yield up their city, which they suppose, because it is situate in the mountains, to be impregnable.

7:9  „Pane náš, vyslechni naši řeč, ať tvoje armáda neutrpí ztráty.

7:9  Ut ergo sine congressione pugnæ possis superare eos, pone custodes fontium, ut non hauriant aquam ex eis, et sine gladio interficies eos, vel certe fatigati tradent civitatem suam, quam putant in montibus positam superari non posse.

7:10  And these words pleased Holofernes, and his officers, and he placed all round about a hundred men at every spring.

7:10  Tento lid, synové Izraele, nespoléhá na svá kopí, ale na to, že bydlí ve vysokých horách – dostat se k vrcholkům jejich hor přece není snadné.

7:10  Et placuerunt verba hæc coram Holoferne et coram satellitibus ejus, et constituit per gyrum centenarios per singulos fontes.

7:11  And when they had kept this watch for full twenty days, the cisterns, and the reserve of waters failed among all the inhabitants of Bethulia, so that there was not within the city, enough to satisfy them, no not for one day, for water was daily given out to the people by measure.

7:11  Proto s nimi, pane, raději nebojuj v běžné bitvě, a z tvého vojska nepadne ani jeden muž.

7:11  Cumque ista custodia per dies viginti fuisset expleta, defecerunt cisternæ et collectiones aquarum omnibus habitantibus Bethuliam, ita ut non esset intra civitatem unde satiarentur vel una die, quoniam ad mensuram dabatur populis aqua quotidie.

7:12  Then all the men and women, young men, and children, gathering themselves together to Ozias, all together with one voice,

7:12  Zůstaň v táboře a ušetříš každého muže ze svého vojska. Tví služebníci ať mezitím obsadí vodní pramen, který vyvěrá na úpatí hory –

7:12  Tunc ad Oziam congregati omnes viri feminæque, juvenes et parvuli, omnes simul una voce

7:13  Said: God be judge between us and thee, for thou hast done evil against us, in that thou wouldst not speak peaceably with the Assyrians, and for this cause God hath sold us into their hands.

7:13  odtud totiž všichni obyvatelé Betulie berou vodu. Až je přemůže žízeň, sami své město vydají. My se svými muži zatím vystoupíme na nejbližší horské vrcholy, utáboříme se na nich a budeme hlídat, aby z města nevyšel jediný muž.

7:13  dixerunt : Judicet Deus inter nos et te, quoniam fecisti in nos mala, nolens loqui pacifice cum Assyriis, et propter hoc vendidit nos Deus in manibus eorum.

7:14  And therefore there is no one to help us, while we are cast down before their eyes in thirst, and sad destruction.

7:14  Vyčerpá je hlad, tak jako jejich ženy a děti, a ještě než na ně přijde meč, popadají na ulicích před svými domy.

7:14  Et ideo non est qui adjuvet, cum prosternamur ante oculos eorum in siti, et perditione magna.

7:15  And now assemble ye all that are in the city, that we may of our own accord yield ourselves all up to the people of Holofernes.

7:15  Takto je krutě potrestáš za to, že se vzbouřili a nevyšli ti vstříc s prosbou o mír.“

7:15  Et nunc congregate universos qui in civitate sunt, ut sponte tradamus nos omnes populo Holofernis.

7:16  For it is better, that being captives we should live and bless the Lord, than that we should die, and be a reproach to all flesh, after we have seen our wives and our infants die before our eyes.

7:16  Jejich návrh se Holofernovi i celé jeho družině zalíbil, a tak nařídil, ať se stane, jak řekli.

7:16  Melius est enim ut captivi benedicamus Dominum viventes, quam moriamur, et simus opprobrium omni carni, cum viderimus uxores nostras et infantes nostros mori ante oculos nostros.

7:17  We call to witness this day heaven and earth, and the God of our fathers, who taketh vengeance upon us according to our sins, conjuring you to deliver now the city into the hand of the army of Holofernes, that our end may be short by the edge of the sword, which is made longer by the drought of thirst.

7:17  Oddíl Moábců vyrazil spolu s pěti tisíci Asyřanů, utábořili se v údolí a zmocnili se izraelských vodních zdrojů a pramenů.

7:17  Contestamur hodie cælum et terram, et Deum patrum nostrorum, qui ulciscitur nos secundum peccata nostra, ut jam tradatis civitatem in manu militiæ Holofernis, et sit finis noster brevis in ore gladii, qui longior efficitur in ariditate sitis.

7:18  And when they had said these things, there was great weeping and lamentation of all in the assembly, and for many hours with one voice they cried to God, saying:

7:18  Edomité a Amonci se zatím vydali vzhůru a utábořili se v horách naproti Dotanu. Část z nich poslali na jih a na východ naproti Egrebelu, který leží poblíž Chusu u potoka Mochmur. Zbytek asyrského vojska tábořil na pláni a pokrýval celý povrch země. Jejich stany a zásoby se táhly do všech stran; bylo jich obrovské množství.

7:18  Et cum hæc dixissent, factus est fletus et ululatus magnus in ecclesia ab omnibus, et per multas horas una voce clamaverunt ad Deum, dicentes :

7:19  We have sinned with our fathers, we have done unjustly, we have committed iniquity:

7:19  Synové Izraele byli zoufalí a začali volat k Hospodinu, svému Bohu. Obklíčili je totiž všichni jejich nepřátelé a nebylo před nimi úniku –

7:19  Peccavimus cum patribus nostris : injuste egimus, iniquitatem fecimus.

7:20  Have thou mercy on us, because thou art good, or punish our iniquities by chastising us thyself, and deliver not them that trust in thee to a people that knoweth not thee,

7:20  vždyť je obléhalo celé asyrské vojsko – pěchota, vozy i jezdci. Po čtyřiatřiceti dnech došla obyvatelům Betulie všechna voda v nádobách

7:20  Tu, quia pius es, miserere nostri, aut in tuo flagello vindica iniquitates nostras, et noli tradere confitentes te populo qui ignorat te,

7:21  That they may not say among the Gentiles: Where is their God?

7:21  a vyprázdnily se i všechny nádrže. Neměli už vodu k pití ani na den (dostávali totiž denní příděly).

7:21  ut non dicant inter gentes : Ubi est Deus eorum ?

7:22  And when being wearied with these cries, and tired with these weepings, they held their peace,

7:22  Jejich nemluvňata byla malátná, ženy a mladíci umdlévali žízní a padali ve městě na ulicích i v průchodech bran. Už jim došly síly.

7:22  Et cum fatigati ex his clamoribus et his fletibus lassati siluissent,

7:23  Ozias rising up all in tears, said: Be of good courage, my brethren, and let us wait these five days for mercy from the Lord.

7:23  Všechen lid, mladíci, ženy i děti, se tehdy shromáždil k Uziášovi a městským předákům a s hlasitým křikem přede všemi staršími prohlásili:

7:23  exsurgens Ozias infusus lacrimis, dixit : Æquo animo estote, fratres, et hos quinque dies expectemus a Domino misericordiam.

7:24  For perhaps he will put a stop to his indignation, and will give glory to his own name.

7:24  „Ať nás Bůh s vámi rozsoudí – vždyť jste nám velice ublížili! Nejednali jste s Asyřany o míru, a teď už nám není pomoci. Bůh nás vydal do jejich rukou, abychom před nimi padli žízní a úplným vyčerpáním. Tak už je zavolejte! Vydejte celou obec napospas Holofernovým mužům a celé jeho armádě. Je pro nás přece lepší padnout jim za kořist. Budou z nás otroci, ale přežijeme a nebudeme se muset dívat, jak nám naše nemluvňata umírají před očima a jak naše ženy a děti přicházejí o život. Zapřísaháme vás při nebi a zemi, při našem Bohu a Pánu našich otců, který nás trestá za naše hříchy a za prohřešky našich otců – udělejte ještě dnes, jak jsme řekli!“ Celé shromáždění se pak jako jeden muž dalo do velikého nářku a hlasitě volali k Hospodinu, svému Bohu. Uziáš k nim pak promluvil: „Hlavu vzhůru, bratři! Vydržme ještě pět dní, než nám Hospodin, náš Bůh, znovu prokáže své milosrdenství. Přece nás nadobro neopustí. Jestliže ty dny uběhnou a nepřijde nám žádná pomoc, pak udělám, jak jste řekli.“ S tím rozpustil lid, každého na jeho stanoviště. Muži odešli k městským hradbám a věžím a své ženy a děti poslali domů. V celém městě zavládla veliká sklíčenost.

7:24  Forsitan enim indignationem suam abscindet, et dabit gloriam nomini suo.

7:25  But if after five days be past there come no aid, we will do the things which you have spoken.

7:25  Si autem transactis quinque diebus non venerit adjutorium, faciemus hæc verba quæ locuti estis.

Chapter 8

8:1  Now it came to pass, when Judith a widow had heard these words, who was the daughter of Merari, the son of Idox, the son of Joseph, the son of Ozias, the son of Elai, the son of Jamnor, the son of Gedeon, the son of Raphaim, the son of Achitob, the son of Melchias, the son of Enan, the son of Nathanias, the son of Salathiel, the son of Simeon, the son of Ruben:

8:1  Tehdy se o tom všem doslechla Judita, dcera Merariho, syna Oxova, syna Josefova, syna Uzielova, syna Elkiova, syna Ananiášova, syna Gedeonova, syna Rafainova, syna Achitubova, syna Eliášova, syna Chilkiášova, syna Eliabova, syna Natanaelova, syna Salamielova, syna Sarašadajova, syna Izraelova.

8:1  Et factum est cum audisset hæc verba Judith vidua, quæ erat filia Merari filii Idox filii Joseph filii Oziæ filii Elai filii Jamnor filii Gedeon filii Raphaim filii Achitob filii Melchiæ filii Enan filii Nathaniæ filii Salathiel filii Simeon filii Ruben,

8:2  And her husband was Manasses, who died in the time of the barley harvest:

8:2  Její muž Manases, pocházející z téhož kmene a rodu, zemřel během sklizně ječmene,

8:2  et vir ejus fuit Manasses, qui mortuus est in diebus messis hordeaceæ :

8:3  For he was standing over them that bound sheaves in the field; and the heat came upon his head, and he died in Bethulia his own city, and was buried there with his fathers.

8:3  když na poli dohlížel na vazače snopů a dostal úpal. Doma v Betulii pak ulehl na lůžko a zemřel, a tak ho pohřbili k jeho předkům na poli mezi Dotanem a Balamonem.

8:3  instabat enim super alligantes manipulos in campo, et venit æstus super caput ejus, et mortuus est in Bethulia civitate sua, et sepultus est illic cum patribus suis.

8:4  And Judith his relict was a widow now three years and six months.

8:4  Judita žila už tři roky a čtyři měsíce ve svém domě jako vdova.

8:4  Erat autem Judith relicta ejus vidua jam annis tribus et mensibus sex.

8:5  And she made herself a private chamber in the upper part of her house, in which she abode shut up with her maids.

8:5  Na střešní terase si postavila stan, na bedrech se opásala pytlovinou a nosila vdovské šaty.

8:5  Et in superioribus domus suæ fecit sibi secretum cubiculum, in quo cum puellis suis clausa morabatur,

8:6  And she wore haircloth upon her loins, and fasted all the days of her life, except the sabbaths, and new moons, and the feasts of the house of Israel.

8:6  Po všechny dny svého vdovství se postila, s výjimkou sobot a dnů před sobotou, novoluní a dnů před novoluním a dalších svátků a slavností Izraelova domu.

8:6  et habens super lumbos suos cilicium, jejunabat omnibus diebus vitæ suæ, præter sabbata et neomenias et festa domus Israël.

8:7  And she was exceedingly beautiful, and her husband left her great riches, and very many servants, and large possessions of herds of oxen, and flocks of sheep.

8:7  Byla to velmi pohledná, překrásná žena. Její muž Manases jí po sobě zanechal zlato a stříbro, služebníky a služebnice, dobytek a pole a ona se o to vše dál starala.

8:7  Erat autem eleganti aspectu nimis, cui vir suus reliquerat divitias multas, et familiam copiosam, ac possessiones armentis boum, et gregibus ovium plenas.

8:8  And she was greatly renowned among all, because she feared the Lord very much, neither was there any one that spoke an ill word of her.

8:8  Nikdo proti ní nemohl říct zlého slova, protože byla velmi bohabojná.

8:8  Et erat hæc in omnibus famosissima, quoniam timebat Dominum valde, nec erat qui loqueretur de illa verbum malum.

8:9  When therefore she had heard that Ozias had promised that he would deliver up the city after the fifth day, she sent to the ancients Chabri and Charmi.

8:9  Judita se doslechla, jak lidé, zoufalí kvůli nedostatku vody, reptali proti svému předákovi. Doslechla se také, jak jim Uziáš odpověděl a jak jim přísahal, že za pět dní vydá město Asyřanům.

8:9  Hæc itaque cum audisset quoniam Ozias promisisset quod transacto quinto die traderet civitatem, misit ad presbyteros Chabri et Charmi.

8:10  And they came to her, and she said to them: What is this word, by which Ozias hath consented to give up the city to the Assyrians, if within five days there come no aid to us?

8:10  Poslala proto svou služebnou, správkyni celého svého majetku, a pozvala starší města Uziáše, Chabrise a Charmise na návštěvu.

8:10  Et venerunt ad illam, et dixit illis : Quod est hoc verbum, in quo consensit Ozias, ut tradat civitatem Assyriis si intra quinque dies non venerit vobis adjutorium ?

8:11  And who are you that tempt the Lord?

8:11  Přišli za ní a ona jim řekla: „Poslyšte, předáci lidu Betulie. Nebylo správné, jak jste dnes mluvili před lidem. Dokonce jste před Bohem přísahali, že vydáte město našim nepřátelům, pokud vám Hospodin v těchto dnech nepřijde na pomoc.

8:11  et qui estis vos, qui tentatis Dominum ?

8:12  This is not a word that may draw down mercy, but rather that may stir up wrath, and enkindle indignation.

8:12  Vždyť kdo jste vy, že pokoušíte Boha a stavíte se před lidmi nad něj?

8:12  non est iste sermo qui misericordiam provocet, sed potius qui iram excitet, et furorem accendat.

8:13  You have set a time for the mercy of the Lord, and you have appointed him a day, according to your pleasure.

8:13  Zkoušíte teď Hospodina Všemohoucího – a přitom nic nechápete a nikdy nepochopíte!

8:13  Posuistis vos tempus miserationis Domini, et in arbitrium vestrum, diem constituistis ei.

8:14  But forasmuch as the Lord is patient, let us be penitent for this same thing, and with many tears let us beg his pardon:

8:14  Když nevidíte do hloubky lidského srdce a nerozumíte pohnutkám lidské mysli, jak potom chcete vystihnout Boha, který to vše stvořil? Jak chcete porozumět jeho myšlení a pochopit jeho uvažování? Ne, bratři, nehněvejte Hospodina, našeho Boha!

8:14  Sed quia patiens Dominus est, in hoc ipso pœniteamus, et indulgentiam ejus fusis lacrimis postulemus :

8:15  For God will not threaten like man, nor be inflamed to anger like the son of man.

8:15  Jestliže nám nechce pomoci během pěti dnů, může nás zachránit, kdykoli bude chtít, anebo nás také může před zraky našich nepřátel zahubit.

8:15  non enim quasi homo sic Deus comminabitur, neque sicut filius hominis ad iracundiam inflammabitur.

8:16  And therefore let us humble our souls before him, and continuing in an humble spirit, in his service:

8:16  Neklaďte Hospodinu, našemu Bohu, podmínky. Bůh není člověk, aby si nechal vyhrožovat, není lidský syn, aby se nechal ovládat.

8:16  Et ideo humiliemus illi animas nostras, et in spiritu constituti humiliato, servientes illi

8:17  Let us ask the Lord with tears, that according to his will so he would shew his mercy to us: that as our heart is troubled by their pride, so also we may glorify in our humility.

8:17  Proto od něj i nadále čekejme záchranu a volejme k němu o pomoc. Když se mu zlíbí, vyslyší nás.

8:17  dicamus flentes Domino, ut secundum voluntatem suam sic faciat nobiscum misericordiam suam : ut sicut conturbatum est cor nostrum in superbia eorum, ita etiam de nostra humilitate gloriemur :

8:18  For we have not followed the sins of our fathers, who forsook their God, and worshipped strange gods.

8:18  Neklaníme se přece bohům vyrobeným lidskýma rukama – takové věci se děly v dřívějších dobách, ale za našich časů až dodnes se žádný náš kmen, rod, okrsek ani město ničím takovým neprovinili.

8:18  quoniam non sumus secuti peccata patrum nostrorum, qui dereliquerunt Deum suum, et adoraverunt deos alienos,

8:19  For which crime they were given up to their enemies, to the sword, and to pillage, and to confusion: but we know no other God but him.

8:19  Naši otcové bývali kvůli tomu vydáni napospas meči a plenění, takže utrpěli hroznou porážku od svých nepřátel.

8:19  pro quo scelere dati sunt in gladium, et in rapinam, et in confusionem inimicis suis : nos autem alterum deum nescimus præter ipsum.

8:20  Let us humbly wait for his consolation, and the Lord our God will require our blood of the afflictions of our enemies, and he will humble all the nations that shall rise up against us, and bring them to disgrace.

8:20  My ale neznáme jiného Boha kromě něj, a tak spoléháme, že námi ani nikým z našeho národa nepohrdne.

8:20  Expectemus humiles consolationem ejus, et exquiret sanguinem nostrum de afflictionibus inimicorum nostrorum, et humiliabit omnes gentes, quæcumque insurgunt contra nos, et faciet illas sine honore Dominus Deus noster.

8:21  And now, brethren, as you are the ancients among the people of God, and their very soul resteth upon you: comfort their hearts by your speech, that they may be mindful how our fathers were tempted that they might be proved, whether they worshipped their God truly.

8:21  Vždyť dobudou-li nás, dobudou celé Judsko a vyplení i naši svatyni. Bůh nás za to znesvěcení nechá zaplatit naší vlastní krví!

8:21  Et nunc fratres, quoniam vos estis presbyteri in populo Dei, et ex vobis pendet anima illorum, ad eloquium vestrum corda eorum erigite, ut memores sint quia tentati sunt patres nostri, ut probarentur si vere colerent Deum suum.

8:22  They must remember how our father Abraham was tempted, and being proved by many tribulations, was made the friend of God.

8:22  Budou-li naši bratři vyvražděni, půjde-li země do vyhnanství, a bude-li naše dědictví zpustošeno, Bůh to obrátí na naši hlavu. Kdekoli mezi národy budeme otročit, tam se pro své pány staneme urážkou a nadávkou.

8:22  Memores esse debent quomodo pater noster Abraham tentatus est, et per multas tribulationes probatus, Dei amicus effectus est.

8:23  So Isaac, so Jacob, so Moses, and all that have pleased God, passed through many tribulations, remaining faithful.

8:23  Když se vydáme do otroctví, nezískáme tím žádnou přízeň. Hospodin, náš Bůh, to obrátí k naší potupě.

8:23  Sic Isaac, sic Jacob, sic Moyses, et omnes qui placuerunt Deo, per multas tribulationes transierunt fideles.

8:24  But they that did not receive the trials with the fear of the Lord, but uttered their impatience and the reproach of their murmuring against the Lord,

8:24  Nuže, bratři, dejme teď svým bratřím příklad. Jejich život závisí na nás. Osud svatyně, chrámu i oltáře, spočívá na nás.

8:24  Illi autem qui tentationes non susceperunt cum timore Domini, et impatientiam suam et improperium murmurationis suæ contra Dominum protulerunt,

8:25  Were destroyed by the destroyer, and perished by serpents.

8:25  Především ale děkujme Hospodinu, našemu Bohu, že nás zkouší stejně jako naše otce.

8:25  exterminati sunt ab exterminatore, et a serpentibus perierunt.

8:26  As for us therefore let us not revenge ourselves for these things which we suffer.

8:26  Jen si vzpomeňte, jak naložil s Abrahamem, jak zkoušel Izáka a co se přihodilo Jákobovi, když v syrské Mezopotámii pásl ovce svého strýce Lábana.

8:26  Et nos ergo non ulciscamur nos pro his quæ patimur,

8:27  But esteeming these very punishments to be less than our sins deserve, let us believe that these scourges of the Lord, with which like servants we are chastised, have happened for our amendment, and not for our destruction.

8:27  Vždyť jako Hospodin čistil ohněm je, aby vyzkoušel jejich srdce, tak ani nás nebije ze msty, nýbrž pro výstrahu těm, kdo jsou mu blízko.“

8:27  sed reputantes peccatis nostris hæc ipsa supplicia minora esse flagella Domini, quibus quasi servi corripimur ad emendationem, et non ad perditionem nostram evenisse credamus.

8:28  And Ozias and the ancients said to her: All things which thou hast spoken are true, and there is nothing to be reprehended in thy words.

8:28  Uziáš jí odpověděl: „Všechno, co jsi řekla, jsi řekla dobře, a tvým slovům nemůže nikdo odporovat. Dnes to není poprvé, co se ukázala tvá moudrost. Už od počátku tvého života zná všechen lid tvou rozvážnost a dobrotu tvého srdce. Lid měl ale ukrutnou žízeň, a tak nás donutili pronést tu řeč, a zavázat se přísahou, kterou nemůžeme zrušit. Ty jsi ale zbožná žena; pomodli se za nás, ať Hospodin sešle déšť a naplní naše nádrže, ať s námi ještě není konec.“ Na to jim Judita řekla: „Poslyšte, udělám něco, co si potomci našeho rodu budou připomínat z pokolení na pokolení. Vy dnes v noci stůjte u brány a já se svou služebnou vyjdu ven. A než uplyne lhůta, po níž jste chtěli vydat město našim nepřátelům, Hospodin skrze mě zachrání Izrael. Neptejte se ale, co se chystám udělat. Nic vám neřeknu, dokud to nevykonám.“ Uziáš a ostatní předáci jí řekli: „Jdi v pokoji. A kéž tě předchází Hospodin, náš Bůh, aby potrestal naše nepřátele.“ S tím opustili její stan a vrátili se na svá stanoviště.

8:28  Et dixerunt illi Ozias et presbyteri : Omnia quæ locuta es, vera sunt, et non est in sermonibus tuis ulla reprehensio.

8:29  Now therefore pray for us, for thou art a holy woman, and one fearing God.

8:29  Nunc ergo ora pro nobis, quoniam mulier sancta es, et timens Deum.

8:30  And Judith said to them: As you know that what I have been able to say is of God:

8:30  Et dixit illis Judith : Sicut quod potui loqui, Dei esse cognoscitis,

8:31  So that which I intend to do prove ye if it be of God, and pray that God may strengthen my design.

8:31  ita quod facere disposui, probate si ex Deo est, et orate ut firmum faciat Deus consilium meum.

8:32  You shall stand at the gate this night, and I will go out with my maidservant: and pray ye, that as you have said, in five days the Lord may look down upon his people Israel.

8:32  Stabitis vos ad portam nocte ista, et ego exeam cum abra mea : et orate, ut sicut dixistis, in diebus quinque respiciat Dominus populum suum Israël.

8:33  But I desire that you search not into what I am doing, and till I bring you word let nothing else be done but to pray for me to the Lord our God.

8:33  Vos autem nolo ut scrutemini actum meum, et usque dum renuntiem vobis, nihil aliud fiat, nisi oratio pro me ad Dominum Deum nostrum.

8:34  And Ozias the prince of Juda said to her: Go in peace, and the Lord be with thee to take revenge of our enemies. So returning they departed.

8:34  Et dixit ad eam Ozias princeps Juda : Vade in pace, et Dominus sit tecum in ultionem inimicorum nostrorum. Et revertentes abierunt.

Chapter 9

9:1  And when they were gone, Judith went into her oratory: and putting on haircloth, laid ashes on her head: and falling down prostrate before the Lord, she cried to the Lord, saying:

9:1  Judita padla na tvář, hlavu posypanou popelem, obnažená až na pytlovinu na holém těle. Právě ve chvíli, kdy se v Božím chrámě v Jeruzalémě přinášela večerní kadidlová oběť, začala Judita hlasitě volat k Hospodinu:

9:1  Quibus ascendentibus, Judith ingressa est oratorium suum : et induens se cilicio, posuit cinerem super caput suum : et prosternens se Domino, clamabat ad Dominum, dicens :

9:2  Lord God of my father Simeon, who gavest him a sword to execute vengeance against strangers, who had defiled by their uncleanness, and uncovered the virgin unto confusion:

9:2  „Hospodine, Bože mého praotce Šimeona! Ty jsi mu vložil do ruky meč, aby ztrestal cizince, kteří rozvázali panně pás, aby ji poskvrnili. Obnažili její stehna, aby ji zhanobili. Poskvrnili její lůno, aby ji potupili. Ty jsi řekl: „To se nesmí,“ ale oni to udělali!

9:2  Domine Deus patris mei Simeon, qui dedisti illi gladium in defensionem alienigenarum, qui violatores extiterunt in coinquinatione sua, et denudaverunt femur virginis in confusionem :

9:3  And who gavest their wives to be made a prey, and their daughters into captivity: and all their spoils to be divided to the servants, who were zealous with thy zeal: assist, I beseech thee, O Lord God, me a widow.

9:3  Za to jsi nechal povraždit jejich vůdce; jejich lůžko, zahanbené jejich svodem, bylo zbroceno krví, když byli sami svedeni. Pobil jsi otroky i s pány a pány i s jejich trůny.

9:4  For thou hast done the things of old, and hast devised one thing after another: and what thou hast designed hath been done.

9:4  Jejich ženy jsi vydal za kořist a jejich dcery do zajetí. Všechnu kořist jsi nechal rozdělit svým milovaným synům, kteří horlili tvou horlivostí. Nemohli snést poskvrnění své rodné krve, a tak volali o pomoc k tobě. Ach Bože, Bože můj, vyslyš také mne, vdovu!

9:4  Tu enim fecisti priora, et illa post illa cogitasti : et hoc factum est quod ipse voluisti.

9:5  For all thy ways are prepared, and in thy providence thou hast placed thy judgments.

9:6  Look upon the camp of the Assyrians now, as thou wast pleased to look upon the camp of the Egyptians, when they pursued armed after thy servants, trusting in their chariots, and in their horsemen, and in a multitude of warriors.

9:6  Věci, o nichž jsi rozhodl, nastoupily a ohlásily se: „Zde jsme.“ Všechny tvé cesty jsou připraveny a tvůj soud je předem stanoven.

9:6  Respice castra Assyriorum nunc, sicut tunc castra Ægyptiorum videre dignatus es, quando post servos tuos armati currebant, confidentes in quadrigis, et in equitatu suo, et in multitudine bellatorum.

9:7  But thou lookedst over their camp, and darkness wearied them.

9:7  Nuže pohleď – jsou tu Asyřané se svou obrovskou armádou. Chlubí se svými koňmi a jezdci, pyšní se silou své pěchoty a spoléhají na štíty a kopí, na luky a praky. Nevědí, že ty jsi Hospodin, který maří války.

9:7  Sed aspexisti super castra eorum, et tenebræ fatigaverunt eos.

9:8  The deep held their feet, and the waters overwhelmed them.

9:8  Tvé jméno je Hospodin. Rozdrť jejich sílu svou mocí, rozbij svým hněvem jejich panství! Vždyť chtějí znesvětit tvoji svatyni, poskvrnit stánek, kde přebývá tvé slavné jméno, čepelí urazit rohy na tvém oltáři.

9:8  Tenuit pedes eorum abyssus, et aquæ operuerunt eos.

9:9  So may it be with these also, O Lord, who trust in their multitude, and in their chariots, and in their pikes, and in their shields, and in their arrows, and glory in their spears,

9:9  Pohleď na jejich pýchu, sešli svůj hněv na jejich hlavy a vlož do mé vdovské ruky sílu vykonat, co zamýšlím.

9:9  Sic fiant et isti, Domine, qui confidunt in multitudine sua, et in curribus suis, et in contis, et in scutis, et in sagittis suis, et in lanceis gloriantur,

9:10  And know not that thou art our God, who destroyest wars from the beginning, and the Lord is thy name.

9:10  Skrze mé svůdné rty znič otroka i s velitelem a velitele i s jeho pomocníkem – rozdrť jejich pýchu rukou ženy!

9:10  et nesciunt quia tu ipse es Deus noster, qui conteris bella ab initio, et Dominus nomen est tibi.

9:11  Lift up thy arm as from the beginning, and crush their power with thy power: let their power fall in their wrath, who promise themselves to violate thy sanctuary, and defile the dwelling place of thy name, and to beat down with their sword the horn of thy altar.

9:11  Tvá síla přece není v množství a nevládneš díky silným. Ty jsi Bůh ponížených, pomocník nepatrných, zastánce slabých, obhájce zavržených a zachránce zoufalých.

9:11  Erige brachium tuum sicut ab initio, et allide virtutem illorum in virtute tua : cadat virtus eorum in iracundia tua, qui promittunt se violare sancta tua, et polluere tabernaculum nominis tui, et dejicere gladio suo cornu altaris tui.

9:12  Bring to pass, O Lord, that his pride may be cut off with his own sword.

9:12  Ano, Bože mého otce, Bože Izraelova dědictví, Panovníku nebe a země, Stvořiteli vší vody, Králi veškerého svého stvoření, vyslyš prosím moji modlitbu!

9:12  Fac, Domine, ut gladio proprio ejus superbia amputetur :

9:13  Let him be caught in the net of his own eyes in my regard, and do thou strike him by the graces of the words of my lips.

9:13  Dej, abych svými svůdnými slovy zasáhla a zranila ty, kdo se krutě spikli proti tvé smlouvě, proti tvému svatému chrámu, proti hoře Sion a proti domovu tvých synů.

9:13  capiatur laqueo oculorum suorum in me, et percuties eum ex labiis caritatis meæ.

9:14  Give me constancy in my mind, that I may despise him: and fortitude that I may overthrow him.

9:14  Dej, ať celý tvůj národ a každý kmen pozná a porozumí, že ty jsi Bůh, Bůh vší moci a síly – že jsi jediný, kdo zaštiťuje izraelský lid.“

9:14  Da mihi in animo constantiam ut contemnam illum, et virtutem, ut evertam illum.

9:15  For this will be a glorious monument for thy name, when he shall fall by the hand of a woman.

9:15  Erit enim hoc memoriale nominis tui, cum manus feminæ dejecerit eum.

9:16  For thy power, O Lord, is not in a multitude, nor is thy pleasure in the strength of horses, nor from the beginning have the proud been acceptable to thee: but the prayer of the humble and the meek hath always pleased thee.

9:16  Non enim in multitudine est virtus tua, Domine, neque in equorum viribus voluntas tua est, nec superbi ab initio placuerunt tibi : sed humilium et mansuetorum semper tibi placuit deprecatio.

9:17  O God of the heavens, creator of the waters, and Lord of the whole creation, hear me a poor wretch, making supplication to thee, and presuming of thy mercy.

9:17  Deus cælorum, creator aquarum, et Dominus totius creaturæ, exaudi me miseram deprecantem, et de tua misericordia præsumentem.

9:18  Remember, O Lord, thy covenant, and put thou words in my mouth, and strengthen the resolution in my heart, that thy house may continue in thy holiness:

9:18  Memento, Domine, testamenti tui, et da verbum in ore meo, et in corde meo consilium corrobora, ut domus tua in sanctificatione tua permaneat :

9:19  And all nations may acknowledge that thou art God, and there is no other besides thee.

9:19  et omnes gentes agnoscant quia tu es Deus, et non est alius præter te.

Chapter 10

10:1  And it came to pass, when she had ceased to cry to the Lord, that she rose from the place wherein she lay prostrate before the Lord.

10:1  Takto Judita volala k Bohu Izraele. Když dokončila svou modlitbu,

10:1  Factum est autem, cum cessasset clamare ad Dominum, surrexit de loco in quo jacuerat prostrata ad Dominum.

10:2  And she called her maid, and going down into her house she took off her haircloth, and put away the garments of her widowhood,

10:2  vstala, zavolala svou služebnou a sestoupila dovnitř domu, kde bydlela o sobotách a svátcích.

10:2  Vocavitque abram suam, et descendens in domum suam, abstulit a se cilicium, et exuit se vestimentis viduitatis suæ,

10:3  And she washed her body, and anointed herself with the best ointment, and plaited the hair of her head, and put a bonnet upon her head, and clothed herself with the garments of her gladness, and put sandals on her feet, and took her bracelets, and lilies, and earlets, and rings, and adorned herself with all her ornaments.

10:3  Svlékla pytlovinu, kterou měla na sobě, odložila vdovské šaty, umyla si tělo vodou a natřela se vzácným olejem. Rozčesala si vlasy, nasadila si čelenku a oblékla se do svátečních šatů, kterými se strojila, když ještě žil její muž Manases.

10:3  et lavit corpus suum, et unxit se myro optimo, et discriminavit crinem capitis sui, et imposuit mitram super caput suum, et induit se vestimentis jucunditatis suæ, induitque sandalia pedibus suis, assumpsitque dextraliola, et lilia, et inaures, et annulos, et omnibus ornamentis suis ornavit se.

10:4  And the Lord also gave her more beauty: because all this dressing up did not proceed from sensuality, but from virtue: and therefore the Lord increased this her beauty, so that she appeared to all men's eyes incomparably lovely.

10:4  Obula si střevíce, navlékla si řetízky a náramky, prsteny a náušnice a všechny ostatní ozdoby. Takto se velice nazdobila, aby svedla oči všech mužů, kteří na ni pohlédnou.

10:4  Cui etiam Dominus contulit splendorem : quoniam omnis ista compositio non ex libidine, sed ex virtute pendebat : et ideo Dominus hanc in illam pulchritudinem ampliavit, ut incomparabili decore omnium oculis appareret.

10:5  And she gave to her maid a bottle of wine to carry, and a vessel of oil, and parched corn, and dry figs, and bread and cheese, and went out.

10:5  Své služebné dala měch vína a džbán oleje, naplnila jí mošnu pečivem z ječné mouky, sušenými fíky a čistými chleby, všechno to zabalila a nechala ji to nést.

10:5  Imposuit itaque abræ suæ ascoperam vini, et vas olei, et polentam, et palathas, et panes, et caseum, et profecta est.

10:6  And when they came to the gate of the city, they found Ozias, and the ancients of the city waiting.

10:6  Pak se obě vydaly k bráně města Betulie, kde našly na stráži Uziáše s městskými staršími Chabrisem a Charmisem.

10:6  Cumque venissent ad portam civitatis, invenerunt expectantem Oziam et presbyteros civitatis.

10:7  And when they saw her they were astonished, and admired her beauty exceedingly.

10:7  Qui cum vidissent eam, stupentes mirati sunt nimis pulchritudinem ejus.

10:8  But they asked her no question, only they let her pass, saying: The God of our fathers give thee grace, and may he strengthen all the counsel of thy heart with his power, that Jerusalem may glory in thee, and thy name may be in the number of the holy and just.

10:8  „Kéž ti Bůh našich otců dá milost a kéž naplní tvá předsevzetí ke chloubě synů Izraele a k slávě Jeruzaléma!“

10:8  Nihil tamen interrogantes eam, dimiserunt transire, dicentes : Deus patrum nostrorum det tibi gratiam, et omne consilium tui cordis sua virtute corroboret, ut glorietur super te Jerusalem, et sit nomen tuum in numero sanctorum et justorum.

10:9  And they that were there said, all with one voice: So be it, so be it.

10:9  Judita se poklonila Bohu a řekla jim: „Přikažte, ať mi otevřou městskou bránu, a já půjdu a provedu to, o čem jsme spolu mluvili.“ Přikázali tedy mladíkům, ať jí otevřou, jak požádala.

10:9  Et dixerunt hi qui illic erant omnes una voce : Fiat, fiat.

10:10  But Judith praying to the Lord, passed through the gates, she and her maid.

10:10  Judith vero orans Dominum, transivit per portas, ipsa et abra ejus.

10:11  And it came to pass, when she went down the hill, about break of day, that the watchmen of the Assyrians met her, and stopped her, saying: Whence comest thou or whither goest thou?

10:11  Factum est autem cum descenderet montem, circa ortum diei, occurrerunt ei exploratores Assyriorum, et tenuerunt eam, dicentes : Unde venis ? aut quo vadis ?

10:12  And she answered: I am a daughter of the Hebrews, and I am fled from them, because I knew they would be made a prey to you, because they despised you, and would not of their own accord yield themselves, that they might find mercy in your sight.

10:12  Chopili se Judity a ptali se jí: „Z jakého jsi národa? Odkud přicházíš a kam jdeš?“ „Jsem dcera Hebrejů,“ odpověděla. „Utíkám ale od nich pryč, protože vám brzy padnou za kořist.

10:13  For this reason I thought with myself, saying: I will go to the presence of the prince Holofernes, that I may tell him their secrets, and shew him by what way he may take them, without the loss of one man of his army.

10:14  And when the men had heard her words, they beheld her face, and their eyes were amazed, for they wondered exceedingly at her beauty.

10:14  Et cum audissent viri illi verba ejus, considerabant faciem ejus, et erat in oculis eorum stupor, quoniam pulchritudinem ejus mirabantur nimis.

10:15  And they said to her: Thou hast saved thy life by taking this resolution, to come down to our lord.

10:15  Et dixerunt ad eam : Conservasti animam tuam, eo quod tale reperisti consilium, ut descenderes ad dominum nostrum.

10:16  And be assured of this, that when thou shalt stand before him, he will treat thee well, and thou wilt be most acceptable to his heart. And they brought her to the tent of Holofernes, telling him of her.

10:16  Až staneš před ním, oznam mu úplně bez obav, cos řekla nám, a zachová se k tobě dobrotivě.“

10:16  Hoc autem scias, quoniam cum steteris in conspectu ejus, bene tibi faciet, et eris gratissima in corde ejus. Duxeruntque illam ad tabernaculum Holofernis, annuntiantes eam.

10:17  And when she was come into his presence, forthwith Holofernes was caught by his eyes.

10:17  Cumque intrasset ante faciem ejus, statim captus est in suis oculis Holofernes.

10:18  And his officers said to him: Who can despise the people of the Hebrews, who have such beautiful women, that we should not think it worth our while for their sakes to fight against them?

10:18  Zpráva o jejím příchodu se rozkřikla po stanech a muži se začali sbíhat z celého tábora. Přicházeli a shlukovali se kolem ní, zatímco stála venku před Holofernovým stanem a čekala, až ji ohlásí.

10:18  Dixeruntque ad eum satellites ejus : Quis contemnat populum Hebræorum, qui tam decoras mulieres habent, ut non pro his merito pugnare contra eos debeamus ?

10:19  And Judith seeing Holofernes sitting under a canopy, which was woven of purple and gold, with emeralds and precious stones:

10:19  Všichni žasli nad její krásou a díky ní obdivovali také syny Izraele. Říkali si mezi sebou: „Kdo by mohl podceňovat lid, který má mezi sebou takové ženy? Raději z nich nenechme ani jediného muže. Kdyby někteří přežili, jistě by dokázali oklamat celý svět!“

10:19  Videns itaque Judith Holofernem sedentem in conopeo, quod erat ex purpura, et auro, et smaragdo, et lapidibus pretiosis intextum,

10:20  After she had looked on his face, bowed down to him, prostrating herself to the ground. And the servants of Holofernes lifted her up, by the command of their master.

10:20  Vtom vyšla Holofernova tělesná stráž a celá jeho družina, aby Juditu uvedli do stanu.

10:20  et cum in faciem ejus intendisset, adoravit eum, prosternens se super terram. Et elevaverunt eam servi Holofernis, jubente domino suo.

10:21  Holofernes odpočíval na svém lůžku pod purpurovým závěsem vyšívaným zlatem, smaragdy a jinými drahokamy, a když mu Juditu ohlásili, zamířil v doprovodu stříbrných lamp ke vstupní části stanu. Jakmile předstoupila před Holoferna a jeho družinu, všichni užasli nad její krásnou tváří. Judita se vrhla k zemi, aby se mu klaněla, ale jeho sloužící ji znovu postavili na nohy.

Chapter 11

11:1  Then Holofernes said to her: Be of good comfort, and fear not in thy heart: for I have never hurt a man that was willing to serve Nabuchodonosor the king.

11:2  And if thy people had not despised me, I would never have lifted up my spear against them.

11:2  Ani proti tvému lidu, bydlícímu v horách, bych nepozvedl kopí, kdyby mnou neopovrhli. Můžou si za to sami.

11:2  populus autem tuus, si non contempsisset me, non levassem lanceam meam super eum.

11:3  But now tell me, for what cause hast thou left them, and why it hath pleased thee to come to us?

11:3  Teď mi ale řekni, proč jsi od nich utekla a přešla k nám. Buď klidná, jsi v bezpečí. Budeš žít – dnes v noci i potom.

11:3  Nunc autem dic mihi, qua ex causa recessisti ab illis, et placuit tibi ut venires ad nos ?

11:4  And Judith said to him: Receive the words of thy handmaid, for if thou wilt follow the words of thy handmaid, the Lord will do with thee a perfect thing.

11:4  Nikdo ti neublíží. Naopak, bude se s tebou zacházet dobrotivě, jako s každým, kdo slouží mému pánu, králi Nabukadnezarovi.“

11:4  Et dixit illi Judith : Sume verba ancillæ tuæ, quoniam si secutus fueris verba ancillæ tuæ, perfectam rem faciet Dominus tecum.

11:5  For as Nabuchodonosor the king of the earth liveth, and his power liveth which is in thee for chastising of all straying souls: not only men serve him through thee, but also the beasts of the field obey him.

11:5  Judita mu na to řekla: „Vyslechni milostivě slova své služebnice a dovol, ať tvá otrokyně před tebou promluví. Dnes v noci před svým pánem neřeknu žádnou lež.

11:5  Vivit enim Nabuchodonosor rex terræ, et vivit virtus ejus, quæ est in te ad correptionem omnium animarum errantium : quoniam non solum homines serviunt illi per te, sed et bestiæ agri obtemperant illi.

11:6  For the industry of thy mind is spoken of among all nations, and it is told through the whole world, that thou only art excellent, and mighty in all his kingdom, and thy discipline is cried up in all provinces.

11:6  Budeš-li se řídit slovy své otrokyně, Bůh tvé počínání zdárně skončí a můj pán neselže v tom, co si předsevzal.

11:6  Nuntiatur enim animi tui industria universis gentibus, et indicatum est omni sæculo quoniam tu solus bonus et potens es in omni regno ejus : et disciplina tua omnibus provinciis prædicatur.

11:7  It is known also what Achior said, nor are we ignorant of what thou hast commanded to be done to him.

11:7  Ať žije Nabukadnezar, král vší země, ať žije jeho moc! On tě poslal uvést na správnou cestu všechny živé tvory. Díky tobě mu budou sloužit nejen lidé, ale dokonce i divoká zvěř, dobytek a nebeští ptáci budou díky tvé síle žít pro Nabukandezara a celý jeho dům.

11:7  Nec hoc latet, quod locutus est Achior, nec illud ignoratur, quod ei jusseris evenire.

11:8  For it is certain that our God is so offended with sins, that he hath sent word by his prophets to the people, that he will deliver them up for their sins.

11:8  Doslechli jsme se, jak jsi moudrý a všehoschopný. Po celém světě se šíří zpráva, že právě ty jsi nejlepší v celém království, zkušený a znalý a obdivuhodný ve vojenském umění.

11:8  Constat enim Deum nostrum sic peccatis offensum, ut mandaverit per prophetas suos ad populum quod tradat eum pro peccatis suis.

11:9  And because the children of Israel know they have offended their God, thy dread is upon them.

11:9  Teď ale k řeči, kterou přednesl na tvé poradě Achior. Slyšeli jsme jeho slova, protože muži z Betulie ho nechali naživu a on jim zopakoval všechno, co pověděl tobě.

11:9  Et quoniam sciunt se offendisse Deum suum filii Israël, tremor tuus super ipsos est.

11:10  Moreover also a famine hath come upon them, and for drought of water they are already to be counted among the dead.

11:10  Nuže, můj pane a vládce, nepodceňuj to, co řekl, ale vezmi si to k srdci, protože je to pravda. Náš národ skutečně nebude potrestán a nepodlehne meči, pokud nezhřeší proti svému Bohu.

11:10  Insuper etiam fames invasit eos, et ab ariditate aquæ jam inter mortuos computantur.

11:11  And they have a design even to kill their cattle, and to drink the blood of them.

11:11  Můj pán však nyní neodejde bez úspěchu a s prázdnou. Čeká je smrt, protože už je ovládl hřích, a jakmile tu nepředloženost spáchají, rozhněvají svého Boha.

11:11  Denique hoc ordinant, ut interficient pecora sua, et bibant sanguinem eorum :

11:12  And the consecrated things of the Lord their God which God forbade them to touch, in corn, wine, and oil, these have they purposed to make use of, and they design to consume the things which they ought not to touch with their hands: therefore because they do these things, it is certain they will be given up to destruction.

11:12  Došlo jim totiž jídlo a nemají ani dost vody, a tak se usnesli, že porazí všechen svůj dobytek, a jsou rozhodnuti využít i všechno to, co jim Bůh v jejich zákonech jíst zakázal.

11:12  et sancta Domini Dei sui, quæ præcepit Deus non contingi, in frumento, vino, et oleo, hæc cogitaverunt impendere, et volunt consumere quæ nec manibus deberent contingere : ergo quoniam hæc faciunt, certum est quod in perditionem dabuntur.

11:13  And I thy handmaid knowing this, am fled from them, and the Lord hath sent me to tell thee these very things.

11:13  Rozhodli se, že spotřebují také prvotiny obilí a desátky vína a oleje, které předtím zasvětili a oddělili pro kněze, kteří slouží v Jeruzalémě před tváří našeho Boha. Těchto věcí se přitom nesmí nikdo z lidu ani jen rukou dotknout.

11:13  Quod ego ancilla tua cognoscens, fugi ab illis, et misit me Dominus hæc ipsa nuntiare tibi.

11:14  For I thy handmaid worship God even now that I am with thee, and thy handmaid will go out, and I will pray to God,

11:14  Obyvatelé Betulie už vyslali poselstvo do Jeruzaléma (kde místní provádějí totéž), aby od rady starších přinesli povolení.

11:14  Ego enim ancilla tua Deum colo, etiam nunc apud te : et exiet ancilla tua, et orabo Deum,

11:15  And he will tell me when he will repay them for their sins, and I will come and tell thee, so that I may bring thee through the midst of Jerusalem, and thou shalt have all the people of Israel, as sheep that have no shepherd, and there shall not so much as one dog bark against thee:

11:15  Jakmile ho dostanou a provedou to, v ten den ti budou vydáni k záhubě.

11:15  et dicet mihi quando eis reddat peccatum suum, et veniens nuntiabo tibi, ita ut ego adducam te per mediam Jerusalem, et habebis omnem populum Israël, sicut oves quibus non est pastor, et non latrabit vel unus canis contra te :

11:16  Because these things are told me by the providence of God.

11:16  Když jsem to já, tvá otrokyně, všechno zjistila, utekla jsem od nich. Bůh mě poslal, abych s tebou vykonala věci, které ohromí celý svět, kdekoli o tom lidé uslyší.

11:16  quoniam hæc mihi dicta sunt per providentiam Dei,

11:17  And because God is angry with them, I am sent to tell these very things to thee.

11:17  Tvá otrokyně je totiž bohabojná a slouží Bohu nebes dnem i nocí. Zůstanu nyní u tebe, můj pane. Tvá otrokyně bude vycházet v noci ven do údolí; tam se budu modlit k Bohu a on mi řekne, až své hříchy spáchají. Pak přijdu a povím ti to. Ty vyrazíš s celou svou armádou a nikdo z nich se ti nepostaví na odpor. Provedu tě celým Judskem až před Jeruzalém a postavím tvůj trůn uprostřed něj. Povedeš je jako ovce, které nemají pastýře, a ani pes na tebe nezavrčí. Toto mi bylo předpovězeno a zjeveno mou jasnozřivostí a byla jsem poslána, abych ti to vyřídila.“ Juditina slova se Holofernovi a celé jeho družině zalíbila. Žasli nad její moudrostí a říkali: „Od jednoho konce světa po druhý není žena, která by tak krásně vypadala a tak moudře mluvila!“ Holofernes jí řekl: „Bůh udělal dobře, když tě poslal před tvým lidem, aby nám dal převahu a uvedl zkázu na všechny, kteří opovrhli mým pánem. Opravdu krásně vypadáš a skvěle i mluvíš. Budeš-li jednat tak, jak jsi řekla, tvůj Bůh bude mým bohem a ty budeš bydlet v domě krále Nabukadnezara a budeš slavná po celé zemi.“

11:17  et quoniam iratus est illis Deus, hæc ipsa missa sum nuntiare tibi.

11:18  And all these words pleased Holofernes, and his servants, and they admired her wisdom, and they said one to another:

11:18  Placuerunt autem omnia verba hæc coram Holoferne, et coram pueris ejus, et mirabantur sapientiam ejus, et dicebant alter ad alterum :

11:19  There is not such another woman upon earth in look, in beauty, and in sense of words.

11:19  Non est talis mulier super terram in aspectu, in pulchritudine, et in sensu verborum.

11:20  And Holofernes said to her: God hath done well who sent thee before the people, that thou mightest give them into our hands:

11:20  Et dixit ad illam Holofernes : Benefecit Deus, qui misit te ante populum, ut des illum tu in manibus nostris :

11:21  And because thy promise is good, if thy God shall do this for me, he shall also be my God, and thou shalt be great in the house of Nabuchodonosor, and thy name shall be renowned through all the earth.

11:21  et quoniam bona est promissio tua, si fecerit mihi hoc Deus tuus, erit et Deus meus, et tu in domo Nabuchodonosor magna eris, et nomen tuum nominabitur in universa terra.

Chapter 12

12:1  Then he ordered that she should go in where his treasures were laid up, and bade her tarry there, and he appointed what should be given her from his own table.

12:1  Pak nechal Juditu zavést do místnosti, kde už bylo prostřeno jeho stříbrné nádobí, a nařídil, ať ji obslouží jeho vlastním jídlem a dají jí napít jeho vína.

12:1  Tunc jussit eam introire ubi repositi erant thesauri ejus, et jussit illic manere eam, et constituit quid daretur illi de convivio suo.

12:2  And Judith answered him and said: Now I cannot eat of these things which thou commandest to be given me, lest sin come upon me: but I will eat of the things which I have brought.

12:2  Judita ale řekla: „Nemohu to jíst, abych se neprohřešila. Vystačím s tím, co jsem si vzala s sebou.“

12:2  Cui respondit Judith, et dixit : Nunc non potero manducare ex his quæ mihi præcipis tribui, ne veniat super me offensio : ex his autem quæ mihi detuli, manducabo.

12:3  And Holofernes said to her: If these things which thou hast brought with thee fail thee, what shall we do for thee?

12:3  Holofernes se jí zeptal: „Ale když ti dojde, co máš s sebou, kde seženeme podobné jídlo? Nemáme tu přece nikoho z tvého národa.“

12:3  Cui Holofernes ait : Si defecerint tibi ista, quæ tecum detulisti, quid faciemus tibi ?

12:4  And Judith said: As thy soul liveth, my lord, thy handmaid shall not spend all these things till God do by my hand that which I have purposed. And his servants brought her into the tent which he had commanded.

12:4  „Jakože jsi živ, můj pane,“ odpověděla mu Judita, „tvá otrokyně nespotřebuje, co má s sebou, dokud Pán mou rukou nevykoná to, co rozhodl.“

12:4  Et dixit Judith : Vivit anima tua, domine meus, quoniam non expendet omnia hæc ancilla tua, donec faciat Deus in manu mea hæc quæ cogitavi. Et induxerunt illam servi ejus in tabernaculum quod præceperat.

12:5  And when she was going in, she desired that she might have liberty to go out at night and before day to prayer, and to beseech the Lord.

12:5  Členové Holofernovy družiny pak Juditu zavedli do stanu. Až do půlnoci tam spala, ale za jitřní hlídky vstala

12:5  Et petiit dum introiret, ut daretur ei copia nocte et ante lucem egrediendi foras ad orationem, et deprecandi Dominum.

12:6  And he commanded his chamberlains, that she might go out and in, to adore her God as she pleased, for three days.

12:6  a vzkázala Holofernovi: „Nechť můj pán nařídí, ať jeho otrokyni nechají vyjít ven k modlitbě.“

12:6  Et præcepit cubiculariis suis ut sicut placeret illi, exiret et introiret ad adorandum Deum suum per triduum :

12:7  And she went out in the nights into the valley of Bethulia, and washed herself in a fountain of water.

12:7  Holofernes tedy svým strážím nařídil, ať jí nebrání. Takto zůstala v táboře tři dni. Každou noc se vydávala do údolí pod Betulií a tam se omývala u vodního pramene obsazeného hlídkou.

12:7  et exibat noctibus in vallem Bethuliæ, et baptizabat se in fonte aquæ.

12:8  And as she came up, she prayed to the Lord the God of Israel, that he would direct her way to the deliverance of his people.

12:8  Po koupeli se vždy modlila k Hospodinu, Bohu Izraele, aby ji vedl k vítězství jejího lidu.

12:8  Et ut ascendebat, orabat Dominum Deum Israël ut dirigeret viam ejus ad liberationem populi sui.

12:9  And going in, she remained pure in the tent, until she took her own meat in the evening.

12:9  Když se pak očištěná vrátila zpět, zůstávala ve stanu, dokud jí večer nepřinesli její jídlo.

12:9  Et introiens, munda manebat in tabernaculo usque dum acciperet escam suam in vespere.

12:10  And it came to pass on the fourth day, that Holofernes made a supper for his servants, and said to Vagao his eunuch: Go, and persuade that Hebrew woman, to consent of her own accord to dwell with me.

12:10  Čtvrtého dne uspořádal Holofernes hostinu pouze pro své sloužící; nepozval na ni žádného ze svých velitelů.

12:10  Et factum est, in quarto die Holofernes fecit cœnam servis suis, et dixit ad Vagao eunuchum suum : Vade, et suade Hebræam illam ut sponte consentiat habitare mecum.

12:11  For it is looked upon as shameful among the Assyrians, if a woman mock a man, by doing so as to pass free from him.

12:11  Eunuchovi Bagóovi, správci všech svých osobních záležitostí, řekl: „Jdi za tou Hebrejkou, kterou máš na starosti, a přemluv ji, ať s námi přijde pojíst a popít.

12:11  Fœdum est enim apud Assyrios, si femina irrideat virum agendo ut immunis ab eo transeat.

12:12  Then Vagao went in to Judith, and said: Let not my good maid be afraid to go in to my lord, that she may be honoured before his face, that she may eat with him and drink wine and be merry.

12:12  Byla by to přece hanba, nechat takovou ženu jít a ani se s ní nepobavit. Vždyť by se nám vysmála, kdybychom s ní nespali!“

12:12  Tunc introivit Vagao ad Judith, et dixit : Non vereatur bona puella introire ad dominum meum, ut honorificetur ante faciem ejus, ut manducet cum eo, et bibat vinum in jucunditate.

12:13  And Judith answered him: Who am I, that I should gainsay my lord?

12:13  Bagóas se tedy vzdálil od Holoferna, přišel za Juditou a řekl jí: „Takové krásné děvče by se nemělo zdráhat přijít k mému pánovi. Byla by to pocta, být mu nablízku, napít se s námi vína pro obveselení a být dnes jako jedna z Asyřanek, které slouží v Nabukadnezarově paláci.“

12:13  Cui Judith respondit : Quæ ego sum, ut contradicam domino meo ?

12:14  All that shall be good and best before his eyes, I will do. And whatsoever shall please him, that shall be best to me all the days of my life.

12:14  „Kdo jsem já, abych směla odporovat svému pánovi?“ odpověděla mu Judita. „Udělám hned vše, co mu uvidím na očích. Bude mi nadosmrti potěšením!“

12:14  omne quod erit ante oculos ejus bonum et optimum, faciam. Quidquid autem illi placuerit, hoc mihi erit optimum omnibus diebus vitæ meæ.

12:15  And she arose and dressed herself out with her garments, and going in she stood before his face.

12:15  Vstala a oblékla si skvostné šaty a všechny ženské ozdoby. Její služebná jí zatím šla prostřít na zem před Holofernem kožešiny, které Judita dostala od Bagóa, aby na nich mohla každodenně odpočívat při jídle.

12:15  Et surrexit, et ornavit se vestimento suo, et ingressa stetit ante faciem ejus.

12:16  And the heart of Holofernes was smitten, for he was burning with the desire of her.

12:16  Poté Judita přišla a ulehla k hostině. Holofernes z ní byl úplně bez sebe. Vášní se jen chvěl a nesmírně toužil se jí zmocnit. Ode dne, kdy ji uviděl, totiž jen čekal na příležitost, aby ji svedl.

12:16  Cor autem Holofernes concussum est : erat enim ardens in concupiscentia ejus.

12:17  And Holofernes said to her: Drink now, and sit down and be merry; for thou hast found favour before me.

12:17  A tak jí Holofernes řekl: „Napij se a povesel se s námi.“

12:17  Et dixit ad eam Holofernes : Bibe nunc, et accumbe in jucunditate, quoniam invenisti gratiam coram me.

12:18  And Judith said: I will drink my lord, because my life is magnified this day above all my days.

12:18  „Napiju se, pane,“ odpověděla mu Judita, „vždyť dnes je největší den mého života.“

12:18  Et dixit Judith : Bibam, domine, quoniam magnificata est anima mea hodie præ omnibus diebus meis.

12:19  And she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared for her.

12:19  Pak si vzala, co jí připravila její služebná, a jedla a pila před ním.

12:19  Et accepit, et manducavit et bibit coram ipso ea quæ paraverat illi ancilla ejus.

12:20  And Holofernes was made merry on her occasion, and drank exceeding much wine, so much as he had never drunk in his life.

12:20  Holofernes se kvůli ní celý rozjařil a vypil takové množství vína, jaké v jednom dni nevypil za celý svůj život.

12:20  Et jucundus factus est Holofernes ad eam, bibitque vinum multum nimis, quantum numquam biberat in vita sua.

Chapter 13

13:1  And when it was grown late, his servants made haste to their lodgings, and Vagao shut the chamber doors, and went his way.

13:1  Když se připozdilo, Holofernovi sloužící se začali rychle loučit. Bagóas zvenčí zavřel stan a oddělil tak služebnictvo od svého pána. Všichni si šli lehnout, zmoženi dlouhou pitkou.

13:1  Ut autem sero factum est, festinaverunt servi illius ad hospitia sua, et conclusit Vagao ostia cubiculi, et abiit.

13:2  And they were all overcharged with wine.

13:2  Judita zůstala ve stanu sama s Holofernem rozvaleným na lůžku, jak byl zpitý vínem.

13:2  Erant autem omnes fatigati a vino,

13:3  And Judith was alone in the chamber.

13:3  Její služebná čekala venku před ložnicí, protože jí Judita řekla, že se půjde ven modlit jako každou noc. Totéž řekla i Bagóovi.

13:3  eratque Judith sola in cubiculo.

13:4  But Holofernes lay on his bed, fast asleep, being exceedingly drunk.

13:4  Všichni od prvního do posledního tedy od Holoferna odešli a v ložnici nikdo nezůstal. Judita stanula u jeho lůžka a v duchu zašeptala: „Hospodine, všemohoucí Bože, shlédni v tuto hodinu na to, co svýma rukama vykonám k slávě Jeruzaléma!

13:4  Porro Holofernes jacebat in lecto, nimia ebrietate sopitus.

13:5  And Judith spoke to her maid to stand without before the chamber, and to watch:

13:5  Teď je ta chvíle, aby ses ujal svého dědictví a naplnil mé předsevzetí rozdrtit nepřátele, kteří povstali proti nám.“

13:5  Dixitque Judith puellæ suæ ut staret foris ante cubiculum, et observaret.

13:6  And Judith stood before the bed praying with tears, and the motion of her lips in silence,

13:6  Stetitque Judith ante lectum, orans cum lacrimis, et labiorum motu in silentio,

13:7  Saying: Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, and in this hour look on the works of my hands, that as thou hast promised, thou mayst raise up Jerusalem thy city: and that I may bring to pass that which I have purposed, having a belief that it might be done by thee.

13:7  nahnula se nad lůžkem, popadla Holoferna za vlasy a řekla: „Hospodine, Bože Izraele, posilni mě v tento den!“

13:7  dicens : Confirma me, Domine Deus Israël, et respice in hac hora ad opera manuum mearum, ut, sicut promisisti, Jerusalem civitatem tuam erigas : et hoc quod credens per te posse fieri cogitavi, perficiam.

13:8  And when she had said this, she went to the pillar that was at his bed's head, and loosed his sword that hung tied upon it.

13:8  Potom ho dvakrát vší silou sekla do krku a uťala mu hlavu.

13:8  Et cum hæc dixisset, accessit ad columnam quæ erat ad caput lectuli ejus, et pugionem ejus, qui in ea ligatus pendebat, exsolvit.

13:9  And when she had drawn it out, she took him by the hair of his head, and said: Strengthen me, O Lord God, at this hour.

13:9  Svalila jeho tělo z lůžka, ze sloupků strhla závěs a hned vyšla ven. Holofernovu hlavu předala své služebné

13:9  Cumque evaginasset illum, apprehendit comam capitis ejus, et ait : Confirma me, Domine Deus, in hac hora.

13:10  And she struck twice upon his neck, and cut off his head, and took off his canopy from the pillars, and rolled away his headless body.

13:10  a ta ji strčila do mošny na jídlo. Pak šly obě ven jako vždy, když se spolu chodívaly modlit. Prošly táborem, obešly údolí a stoupaly po svahu k Betulii. Když se přiblížily k městské bráně,

13:10  Et percussit bis in cervicem ejus, et abscidit caput ejus, et abstulit conopeum ejus a columnis, et evolvit corpus ejus truncum.

13:11  And after a while she went out, and delivered the head of Holofernes to her maid, and bade her put it into her wallet.

13:11  Judita už zdálky na strážné volala: „Otevřete mi, otevřete bránu! Bůh, náš Bůh, je s námi! Ještě stále dokazuje svou sílu v Izraeli a svou moc proti nepřátelům, jak to učinil právě dnes!“

13:11  Et post pusillum exivit, et tradidit caput Holofernis ancillæ suæ, et jussit ut mitteret illud in peram suam.

13:12  And they two went out according to their custom, as it were to prayer, and they passed the camp, and having compassed the valley, they came to the gate of the city.

13:12  Když ji tamní muži uslyšeli, pospíchali k bráně a svolali starší města.

13:12  Et exierunt duæ, secundum consuetudinem suam, quasi ad orationem, et transierunt castra, et gyrantes vallem, venerunt ad portam civitatis.

13:13  And Judith from afar off cried to the watchmen upon the walls: Open the gates for God is with us, who hath shewn his power in Israel.

13:13  Všichni se seběhli, od nejmenšího po největšího, protože nemohli uvěřit, že přišla. Otevřeli bránu a přivítali obě ženy. Pak zapálili oheň, aby bylo světlo, a postavili se kolem nich.

13:13  Et dixit Judith a longe custodibus murorum : Aperite portas, quoniam nobiscum est Deus, qui fecit virtutem in Israël.

13:14  And it came to pass, when the men had heard her voice, that they called the ancients of the city.

13:14  Judita před nimi hlasitě zvolala: „Chvalte Boha! Chvalte ho! Chvalte Boha, který nevzdálil své milosrdenství od Izraelova domu, ale rozdrtil dnes v noci nepřátele mou rukou.“

13:14  Et factum est cum audissent viri vocem ejus, vocaverunt presbyteros civitatis.

13:15  And all ran to meet her from the least to the greatest: for they now had no hopes that she would come.

13:15  Potom vytáhla z mošny tu hlavu a ukázala jim ji se slovy: „Pohleďte, hlava Holoferna, vrchního velitele asyrské armády. A zde je závěs, pod kterým ležel opilý. Hospodin ho zabil rukou ženy.

13:15  Et concurrerunt ad eam omnes, a minimo usque ad maximum : quoniam sperabant eam jam non esse venturam.

13:16  And lighting up lights they all gathered round about her: and she went up to a higher place, and commanded silence to be made. And when all had held their peace,

13:16  Jakože je živ Hospodin, který mě ochránil na cestě, kterou jsem se vydala, přísahám, že Holoferna svedla a zahubila moje krása, ale nespáchal se mnou hřích, který by mě poskvrnil a zhanobil.“

13:16  Et accendentes luminaria, congyraverunt circa eam universi : illa autem ascendens in eminentiorem locum, jussit fieri silentium. Cumque omnes tacuissent,

13:17  Judith said: Praise ye the Lord our God, who hath not forsaken them that hope in him.

13:17  Všichni byli naprosto ohromeni. Padli tváří k zemi, klaněli se Bohu a volali jako jeden muž: „Požehnaný jsi, Bože náš, že jsi dnes zahubil nepřátele svého lidu!“

13:17  dixit Judith : Laudate Dominum Deum nostrum, qui non deseruit sperantes in se,

13:18  And by me his handmaid he hath fulfilled his mercy, which he promised to the house of Israel: and he hath killed the enemy of his people by my hand this night.

13:18  Uziáš jí potom řekl: „Požehnaná jsi, dcero, od nejvyššího Boha nade všechny ženy na zemi! Požehnaný je Hospodin Bůh, Stvořitel nebe a země, který tě vedl, abys srazila hlavu vůdci našich nepřátel!

13:18  et in me ancilla sua adimplevit misericordiam suam, quam promisit domui Israël : et interfecit in manu mea hostem populi sui hac nocte.

13:19  Then she brought forth the head of Holofernes out of the wallet, and shewed it them, saying: Behold the head of Holofernes the general of the army of the Assyrians, and behold his canopy, wherein he lay in his drunkenness, where the Lord our God slew him by the hand of a woman.

13:19  Ti, kdo si připomínají Boží moc, nikdy nezapomenou na to, jak ses na něj spolehla.

13:19  Et proferens de pera caput Holofernis, ostendit illis, dicens : Ecce caput Holofernis principis militiæ Assyriorum, et ecce conopeum illius, in quo recumbebat in ebrietate sua, ubi per manum feminæ percussit illum Dominus Deus noster.

13:20  But as the same Lord liveth, his angel hath been my keeper both going hence, and abiding there, and returning from thence hither: and the Lord hath not suffered me his handmaid to be defiled, but hath brought me back to you without pollution of sin, rejoicing for his victory, for my escape, and for your deliverance.

13:20  Kéž tě proto Bůh navěky poctí a zahrne tě dobrodiním, neboť když byl náš národ ponížen, nasadila jsi vlastní život a odvrátila naši záhubu, když jsi před naším Bohem kráčela přímou cestou.“ A všechen lid zvolal: „Amen, amen!“

13:20  Vivit autem ipse Dominus, quoniam custodivit me angelus ejus et hinc euntem, et ibi commorantem, et inde huc revertentem, et non permisit me Dominus ancillam suam coinquinari, sed sine pollutione peccati revocavit me vobis gaudentem in victoria sua, in evasione mea, et in liberatione vestra.

13:21  Give all of you glory to him, because he is good, because his mercy endureth for ever.

13:21  Confitemini illi omnes, quoniam bonus, quoniam in sæculum misericordia ejus.

13:22  And they all adored the Lord, and said to her: The Lord hath blessed thee by his power, because by thee he hath brought our enemies to nought.

13:22  Universi autem adorantes Dominum, dixerunt ad eam : Benedixit te Dominus in virtute sua, quia per te ad nihilum redegit inimicos nostros.

13:23  And Ozias the prince of the people of Israel, said to her: Blessed art thou, O daughter, by the Lord the most high God, above all women upon the earth.

13:23  Porro Ozias princeps populi Israël dixit ad eam : Benedicta es tu, filia, a Domino Deo excelso præ omnibus mulieribus super terram.

13:24  Blessed be the Lord who made heaven and earth, who hath directed thee to the cutting off the head of the prince of our enemies.

13:24  Benedictus Dominus, qui creavit cælum et terram, qui te direxit in vulnera capitis principis inimicorum nostrorum :

13:25  Because he hath so magnified thy name this day, that thy praise shall not depart out of the mouth of men who shall be mindful of the power of the Lord for ever, for that thou hast not spared thy life, by reason of the distress and tribulation of thy people, but hast prevented our ruin in the presence of our God.

13:25  quia hodie nomen tuum ita magnificavit, ut non recedat laus tua de ore hominum qui memores fuerint virtutis Domini in æternum, pro quibus non pepercisti animæ tuæ propter angustias et tribulationem generis tui, sed subvenisti ruinæ ante conspectum Dei nostri.

13:26  And all the people said: So be it, so be it.

13:26  Et dixit omnis populus : Fiat, fiat.

13:27  And Achior being called for came, and Judith said to him: The God of Israel, to whom thou gavest testimony, that he revengeth himself of his enemies, he hath cut off the head of all the unbelievers this night by my hand.

13:27  Porro Achior vocatus venit, et dixit ei Judith : Deus Israël, cui tu testimonium dedisti quod ulciscatur se de inimicis suis, ipse caput omnium incredulorum incidit hac nocte in manu mea.

13:28  And that thou mayst find that it is so, behold the head of Holofernes, who in the contempt of his pride despised the God of Israel: and threatened them with death, saying: When the people of Israel shall be taken, I will command thy sides to be pierced with a sword.

13:28  Et ut probes quia ita est, ecce caput Holofernis, qui in contemptu superbiæ suæ Deum Israël contempsit, et tibi interitum minabatur, dicens : Cum captus fuerit populus Israël, gladio perforari præcipiam latera tua.

13:29  Then Achior seeing the head of Holofernes, being seized with a great fear he fell on his face upon the earth, and his soul swooned away.

13:29  Videns autem Achior caput Holofernis, angustiatus præ pavore cecidit in faciem suam super terram, et æstuavit anima ejus.

13:30  But after he had recovered his spirits he fell down at her feet, and reverenced her, and said:

13:30  Postea vero quam resumpto spiritu recreatus est, procidit ad pedes ejus, et adoravit eam, et dixit :

13:31  Blessed art thou by thy God in every tabernacle of Jacob, for in every nation which shall hear thy name, the God of Israel shall be magnified on occasion of thee.

13:31  Benedicta tu a Deo tuo in omni tabernaculo Jacob, quoniam in omni gente quæ audierit nomen tuum, magnificabitur super te Deus Israël.

Chapter 14

14:1  And Judith said to all the people: Hear me, my brethren, hang ye up this head upon our walls.

14:1  Judita jim řekla: „Poslyšte, bratři. Vezměte tu hlavu a pověste ji na cimbuří našich hradeb.

14:1  Dixit autem Judith ad omnem populum : Audite me, fratres : suspendite caput hoc super muros nostros :

14:2  And as soon as the sun shall rise, let every man take his arms, and rush ye out, not as going down beneath, but as making an assault.

14:2  Až se ráno rozední a nad obzorem vyjde slunce, každý se chopte zbraní. Všichni bojeschopní muži ať v čele s veliteli vyrazí z města, jako byste se chystali postupovat na pláň proti asyrské předsunuté hlídce – ale dál nepokračujte.

14:2  et erit, cum exierit sol, accipiat unusquisque arma sua, et exite cum impetu, non ut descendatis deorsum, sed quasi impetum facientes.

14:3  Then the watchmen must needs run to awake their prince for the battle.

14:3  Asyřané popadnou zbraně a poběží do svého tábora vzbudit své velitele. Ti se seběhnou k Holofernovu stanu, ale jeho tam nenajdou. Padne na ně strach a dají se před vámi na útěk.

14:3  Tunc exploratores necesse erit ut fugiant ad principem suum excitandum ad pugnam.

14:4  And when the captains of them shall run to the tent of Holofernes, and shall find him without his head wallowing in his blood, fear shall fall upon them.

14:4  Vy se spolu se všemi ostatními Izraelci pustíte za nimi a pobijete je na cestách.

14:4  Cumque duces eorum cucurrerint ad tabernaculum Holofernis, et invenerint eum truncum in suo sanguine volutatum, decidet super eos timor.

14:5  And when you shall know that they are fleeing, go after them securely, for the Lord will destroy them under your feet.

14:5  Před tím vším mi ale zavolejte Amonce Achiora, aby viděl a poznal toho, kdo pohrdal domem Izraele a kdo ho k nám poslal na smrt.“

14:5  Cumque cognoveritis fugere eos, ite post illos securi, quoniam Dominus conteret eos sub pedibus vestris.

14:6  Then Achior seeing the power that the God of Israel had wrought, leaving the religion of the Gentiles, he believed God, and circumcised the flesh of his foreskin, and was joined to the people of Israel, with all the succession of his kindred until this present day.

14:6  Poslali tedy pro Achiora do Uziášova domu. Když přišel a v ruce jednoho ze shromážděných mužů uviděl Holofernovu hlavu, omdlel a zhroutil se na zem.

14:6  Tunc Achior, videns virtutem quam fecit Deus Israël, relicto gentilitatis ritu, credidit Deo, et circumcidit carnem præputii sui, et appositus est ad populum Israël, et omnis successio generis ejus usque in hodiernum diem.

14:7  And immediately at break of day, they hung up the head of Holofernes upon the walls, and every man took his arms, and they went out with a great noise and shouting.

14:7  Když ho znovu zvedli, padl Juditě k nohám a klaněl se jí se slovy: „Ať ti dobrořečí ve všech judských příbytcích a všechny národy ať se hrozí tvého jména!

14:7  Mox autem ut ortus est dies, suspenderunt super muros caput Holofernis, accepitque unusquisque vir arma sua, et egressi sunt cum grandi strepitu et ululatu.

14:8  And the watchmen seeing this, ran to the tent of Holofernes.

14:8  Prosím, pověz mi, cos v těchto dnech udělala.“ Judita mu tedy přede všemi vyprávěla, co dělala ode dne, kdy odešla, až do chvíle, kdy s nimi takto hovořila.

14:9  And they that were in the tent came, and made a noise, before the door of the chamber to awake him, endeavouring by art to break his rest, that Holofernes might awake, not by their calling him, but by their noise.

14:9  Když domluvila, propukl hlasitý jásot a celým městem se nesl radostný křik.

14:9  Porro hi qui in tabernaculo erant, venientes, et ante ingressum cubiculi perstrepentes, excitandi gratia, inquietudinem arte moliebantur, ut non ab excitantibus, sed a sonantibus Holofernes evigilaret.

14:10  For no man durst knock, or open and go into the chamber of the general of the Assyrians.

14:10  Když Achior pochopil, co všechno udělal Bůh Izraele, horlivě v něho uvěřil a nechal se obřezat. Připojil se k domu Izraele a patří k němu až dodnes.

14:10  Nullus enim audebat cubiculum virtutis Assyriorum pulsando aut intrando aperire.

14:11  But when his captains and tribunes were come, and all the chiefs of the army of the king of the Assyrians, they said to the chamberlains:

14:11  Za úsvitu tedy pověsili Holofernovu hlavu na hradby, všichni muži se chopili zbraní a vyrazili po četách k horským průsmykům.

14:11  Sed cum venissent ejus duces ac tribuni, et universi majores exercitus regis Assyriorum, dixerunt cubiculariis :

14:12  Go in, and awake him, for the mice, coming out of their holes, have presumed to challenge us to fight.

14:12  Jakmile je Asyřané spatřili, poslali zprávu svým velitelům. Ti se pak s vojevůdci, setníky a všemi ostatními veliteli

14:12  Intrate, et excitate illum, quoniam egressi mures de cavernis suis, ausi sunt provocare nos ad prælium.

14:15  And he went into the tent of Judith, and not finding her, he ran out to the people,

14:15  Když nikdo neodpovídal, rozhrnul plentu, vstoupil do ložnice a tam ho našel, jak leží na podlaze mrtvý s useknutou hlavou.

14:15  Et ingressus tabernaculum Judith, non invenit eam, et exiliit foras ad populum,

14:16  And said: One Hebrew woman hath made confusion in the house of king Nabuchodonosor: for behold Holofernes lieth upon the ground, and his head is not upon him.

14:16  Hlasitě vykřikl a s velikým nářkem, sténáním a bědováním roztrhl své roucho. Potom vpadl do stanu, kde bydlela Judita. Když ji tam nenašel, vyběhl mezi vojsko a křičel: „Ti otroci nás přelstili! Jediná hebrejská žena zhanobila dům krále Nabukadnezara! Podívejte, Holofernes leží na zemi, a bez hlavy!“ Když ta slova uslyšeli asyrští vojevůdci, zmocnila se jich hrůza. Roztrhli své košile a jejich hlasité kvílení a bědování se rozléhalo celým táborem.

14:16  et dixit : Una mulier hebræa fecit confusionem in domo regis Nabuchodonosor : ecce enim Holofernes jacet in terra, et caput ejus non est in illo.

14:17  Now when the chiefs of the army of the Assyrians had heard this, they all rent their garments, and an intolerable fear and dread fell upon them, and their minds were troubled exceedingly.

14:17  Quod cum audissent principes virtutis Assyriorum, sciderunt omnes vestimenta sua, et intolerabilis timor et tremor cecidit super eos, et turbati sunt animi eorum valde.

14:18  And there was a very great cry in the midst of their camp.

14:18  Et factus est clamor incomparabilis in medio castrorum eorum.

Chapter 15

15:1  And when all the army heard that Holofernes was beheaded, courage and counsel fled from them, and being seized with trembling and fear they thought only to save themselves by flight.

15:1  Když to uslyšeli ti, kdo zůstali ve stanech, byli bez sebe

15:1  Cumque omnis exercitus decollatum Holofernem audisset, fugit mens et consilium ab eis, et solo tremore et metu agitati, fugæ præsidium sumunt,

15:2  So that no one spoke to his neighbour, but hanging down the head, leaving all things behind, they made haste to escape from the Hebrews, who, as they heard, were coming armed upon them, and fled by the ways of the fields, and the paths of the hills.

15:2  strachem a hrůzou. Ani jeden z nich nezůstal druhému po boku, ale všichni se svorně ve zmatku rozutekli po všech cestách do údolí i do hor.

15:2  ita ut nullus loqueretur cum proximo suo, sed inclinato capite, relictis omnibus, evadere festinabant Hebræos, quos armatos super se venire audiebant, fugientes per vias camporum et semitas collium.

15:3  So the children of Israel seeing them fleeing, followed after them. And they went down sounding with trumpets and shouting after them.

15:3  Videntes itaque filii Israël fugientes, secuti sunt illos. Descenderuntque clangentes tubis, et ululantes post ipsos.

15:4  And because the Assyrians were not united together, they went without order in their flight; but the children of Israel pursuing in one body, defeated all that they could find.

15:4  Uziáš tehdy poslal do Betomestaimu, Beby, Choby a Kony a do všech končin Izraele posly, aby rozhlásili, co se událo, a aby se všichni vrhli na nepřátele a zničili je.

15:4  Et quoniam Assyrii non adunati, in fugam ibant præcipites : filii autem Israël uno agmine persequentes debilitabant omnes quos invenire potuissent.

15:5  And Ozias sent messengers through all the cities and countries of Israel.

15:5  Když to synové Izraele uslyšeli, všichni jako jeden muž zaútočili na Asyřany a pobíjeli je až k Chobě. Dorazili i obyvatelé Jeruzaléma a celého pohoří, neboť i oni dostali zprávu, co se stalo v nepřátelském táboře. Muži z Gileádu a Galileje na nepřátele zaútočili z boku a krutě je bili až k damašským hranicím.

15:5  Misit itaque Ozias nuntios per omnes civitates et regiones Israël.

15:6  And every country, and every city, sent their chosen young men armed after them, and they pursued them with the edge of the sword until they came to the extremities of their confines.

15:6  Ostatní obyvatelé Betulie pak vtrhli do asyrského tábora, vydrancovali ho a pobrali tam veliké bohatství.

15:6  Omnis itaque regio, omnisque urbs electam juventutem armatam misit post eos, et persecuti sunt eos in ore gladii, quousque pervenirent ad extremitatem finium suorum.

15:7  And the rest that were in Bethulia went into the camp of the Assyrians, and took away the spoils which the Assyrians in their flight had left behind them, and they were laden exceedingly,

15:7  Co zbylo, si po návratu z oné řeže rozdělili izraelští bojovníci a bylo tam toho tak ohromné množství, že spousta kořisti připadla také vesničkám a statkům v horách i na pláni.

15:7  Reliqui autem qui erant in Bethulia, ingressi sunt castra Assyriorum, et prædam quam fugientes Assyrii reliquerant, abstulerunt, et onustati sunt valde.

15:8  But they that returned conquerors to Bethulia, brought with them all things that were theirs, so that there was no numbering of their cattle, and beasts, and all their moveables, insomuch that from the least to the greatest all were made rich by their spoils.

15:8  Z Jeruzaléma pak přicestoval velekněz Joakim s radou izraelských starších, aby viděli to dobrodiní, které Hospodin prokázal Izraeli, a navštívili Juditu a pozdravili ji.

15:8  Hi vero qui victores reversi sunt ad Bethuliam, omnia quæ erant illorum attulerunt secum, ita ut non esset numerus in pecoribus et jumentis et universis mobilibus eorum, ut a minimo usque ad maximum omnes divites fierent de prædationibus eorum.

15:9  And Joachim the high priest came from Jerusalem to Bethulia with all his ancients to see Judith.

15:9  Když k ní přišli, všichni jí jedním hlasem dobrořečili: „Jsi slávou Jeruzaléma a velikou pýchou Izraele, velikou chloubou našeho národa!

15:9  Joacim autem summus pontifex de Jerusalem venit in Bethuliam cum universis presbyteris suis ut videret Judith.

15:10  And when she was come out to him, they all blessed her with one voice, saying: Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, thou art the joy of Israel, thou art the honour of our people:

15:10  Toto vše jsi dokázala svou vlastní rukou. Prokázala jsi Izraeli dobrodiní a Bohu jsi udělala radost. Kéž ti Všemohoucí Hospodin žehná na věčné časy.“ A všechen lid na to řekl: „Amen.“

15:10  Quæ cum exisset ad illum, benedixerunt eam omnes una voce, dicentes : Tu gloria Jerusalem ; tu lætitia Israël ; tu honorificentia populi nostri :

15:11  For thou hast done manfully, and thy heart has been strengthened, because thou hast loved chastity, and after thy husband hast not known any other: therefore also the hand of the Lord hath strengthened thee, and therefore thou shalt be blessed for ever.

15:11  Třicet dní trvalo, než lid vyplenil tábor. Juditě připadl Holofernův stan a všechno jeho stříbrné nádobí, jeho lehátka, umyvadla i veškerý nábytek. Ona to vzala a naložila na mezky, zapřáhla vozy a navršila je kořistí.

15:11  quia fecisti viriliter, et confortatum est cor tuum, eo quod castitatem amaveris, et post virum tuum, alterum nescieris : ideo et manus Domini confortavit te, et ideo eris benedicta in æternum.

15:12  And all the people said: So be it, so be it.

15:12  Všechny izraelské ženy se seběhly, aby ji spatřily. Dobrořečily jí a tančily na její počest. Judita natrhala zelené proutky a rozdávala je ženám okolo.

15:12  Et dixit omnis populus : Fiat, fiat.

15:13  And thirty days were scarce sufficient for the people of Israel to gather up the spoils of the Assyrians.

15:13  Společně se ověnčily olivovými ratolestmi a všechen lid vyrazil ve slavnostním průvodu. Judita v čele vedla tančící ženy a všichni izraelští muži šli za nimi v plné zbroji s věnci a zpívali oslavné písně.

15:13  Per dies autem triginta, vix collecta sunt spolia Assyriorum a populo Israël.

15:14  But all those things that were proved to be the peculiar goods of Holofernes, they gave to Judith in gold, and silver, and garments and precious stones, and all household stuff, and they all were delivered to her by the people.

15:14  Judita celému Izraeli předzpěvovala tento chvalozpěv a všechen lid se k ní přidal z plných plic.

15:14  Porro autem universa quæ Holofernis peculiaria fuisse probata sunt, dederunt Judith in auro, et argento, et vestibus, et gemmis, et omni supellectili : et tradita sunt omnia illi a populo.

15:15  And all the people rejoiced, with the women, and virgins, and young men, playing on instruments and harps.

15:15  Et omnes populi gaudebant cum mulieribus, et virginibus, et juvenibus, in organis et citharis.

Chapter 16

16:1  Then Judith sung this canticle to the Lord, saying:

16:1  Judita zpívala: „Zahrajte mému Bohu na tamburíny, zpívejte Hospodinu s činely! Zanotujte mu novou píseň, jeho jméno vyvyšujte a vzývejte!

16:1  Tunc cantavit canticum hoc Domino Judith, dicens :

16:2  Begin ye to the Lord with timbrels, sing ye to the Lord with cymbals, tune unto him a new psalm, extol and call upon his name.

16:2  Hospodin je Bůh, který maří války, uprostřed svého lidu táboří, vytrhl mě z rukou těch, kdo mě napadli.

16:2  Incipite Domino in tympanis ; cantate Domino in cymbalis ; modulamini illi psalmum novum : exaltate, et invocate nomen ejus.

16:3  The Lord putteth an end to wars, the Lord is his name.

16:3  Asyřan přitáhl z hor na severu, přitáhl se svou nespočetnou armádou. Jeho mužstvo ucpalo říční koryta, jeho jízda všechny kopce pokryla.

16:3  Dominus conterens bella, Dominus nomen est illi.

16:4  He hath set his camp in the midst of his people, to deliver us from the hand of all our enemies.

16:4  Prohlásili, že vypálí mé území, že mečem pobijí mé mladíky, že mé kojence na zem pohodí, že mé děti vezmou za kořist, že mé panny uloupí.

16:4  Qui posuit castra sua in medio populi sui, ut eriperet nos de manu omnium inimicorum nostrorum.

16:5  The Assyrian came out of the mountains from the north in the multitude of his strength: his multitude stopped up the torrents, and their horses covered the valleys.

16:5  Všemohoucí Hospodin je ale přelstil – rukou ženy!

16:5  Venit Assur ex montibus ab aquilone in multitudine fortitudinis suæ : cujus multitudo obturavit torrentes, et equi eorum cooperuerunt valles.

16:6  He bragged that he would set my borders on fire, and kill my young men with the sword, to make my infants a prey, and my virgins captives.

16:6  Jejich vladař nepadl rukou mladíků, nesrazili ho synové Titánů, nepřepadli ho pyšní Giganti, ale Judita, dcera Merariho, svou krásou ho zbavila všech sil.

16:6  Dixit se incensurum fines meos, et juvenes meos occisurum gladio ; infantes meos dare in prædam, et virgines in captivitatem.

16:7  But the almighty Lord hath struck him, and hath delivered him into the hands of a woman, and hath slain him.

16:7  Odložila své vdovské šaty, aby pozvedla trpící v Izraeli. Tvář si potřela vonnou mastí,

16:7  Dominus autem omnipotens nocuit eum, et tradidit eum in manus feminæ, et confodit eum.

16:8  For their mighty one did not fall by young men, neither did the sons of Titan strike him, nor tall giants oppose themselves to him, but Judith the daughter of Merari weakened him with the beauty of her face.

16:9  For she put off her the garments of widowhood, and put on her the garments of joy, to give joy to the children of Israel.

16:9  Exuit enim se vestimento viduitatis, et induit se vestimento lætitiæ in exultatione filiorum Israël.

16:10  She anointed her face with ointment, and bound up her locks with a crown, she took a new robe to deceive him.

16:10  Peršané strnuli nad její odvahou, Médové se zhrozili její smělosti.

16:10  Unxit faciem suam unguento, et colligavit cincinnos suos mitra ; accepit stolam novam ad decipiendum illum.

16:11  Her sandals ravished his eyes, her beauty made his soul her captive, with a sword she cut off his head.

16:11  Můj ponížený lid tehdy spustil křik a nepřítel se vyděsil. Moji zesláblí vykřikli a nepřátelé se zachvěli, jakmile jen začali křičet, obrátili je na útěk.

16:11  Sandalia ejus rapuerunt oculos ejus ; pulchritudo ejus captivam fecit animam ejus : amputavit pugione cervicem ejus.

16:12  The Persians quaked at her constancy, and the Medes at her boldness.

16:13  Then the camp of the Assyrians howled, when my lowly ones appeared, parched with thirst.

16:13  Zazpívám svému Bohu novou píseň: Veliký jsi, Hospodine, a slavný, podivuhodný v síle a nepřemožitelný.

16:13  Tunc ululaverunt castra Assyriorum, quando apparuerunt humiles mei, arescentes in siti.

16:14  The sons of the damsels have pierced them through, and they have killed them like children fleeing away: they perished in battle before the face of the Lord my God.

16:14  Ať ti slouží celé tvé stvoření, vždyť jsi jen promluvil, a ono vzniklo; poslal jsi svého ducha a ten je vytvořil, vždyť tvému hlasu se nevzepře nikdo!

16:14  Filii puellarum compunxerunt eos, et sicut pueros fugientes occiderunt eos : perierunt in prælio a facie Domini Dei mei.

16:15  Let us sing a hymn to the Lord, let us sing a new hymn to our God.

16:15  Základy hor se otřesou i s vodami, skály jak vosk před tvou tváří roztají, k těm, kdo tě uctívají, však budeš milosrdný.

16:15  Hymnum cantemus Domino ; hymnum novum cantemus Deo nostro.

16:16  O Adonai, Lord, great art thou, and glorious in thy power, and no one can overcome thee.

16:16  Vždyť všechny vonné oběti neznamenají skoro nic a všechen tuk celopalů ještě míň, ale ten, kdo Hospodina ctí, bude navěky významný.

16:16  Adonai Domine, magnus es tu, et præclarus in virtute tua : et quem superare nemo potest.

16:17  Let all thy creatures serve thee: because thou hast spoken, and they were made: thou didst send forth thy spirit, and they were created, and there is no one that can resist thy voice.

16:17  Běda národům, jež se staví proti mému lidu; v soudný den je ztrestá Všemohoucí Hospodin! Jejich tělo vydá ohni a červům a budou navěky plakat bolestí.“

16:17  Tibi serviat omnis creatura tua, quia dixisti, et facta sunt ; misisti spiritum tuum, et creata sunt : et non est qui resistat voci tuæ.

16:18  The mountains shall be moved from the foundations with the waters: the rocks shall melt as wax before thy face.

16:18  Tak dorazili do Jeruzaléma. Klaněli se Bohu, a jakmile se lid očistil, obětovali své celopaly, dobrovolné oběti a dary.

16:18  Montes a fundamentis movebuntur cum aquis ; petræ, sicut cera, liquescent ante faciem tuam.

16:19  But they that fear thee, shall be great with thee in all things.

16:19  Judita Bohu s přísahou zasvětila všechny Holofernovy věci, které dostala od lidu, i onen závěs, který si sama vzala z jeho ložnice.

16:19  Qui autem timent te, magni erunt apud te per omnia.

16:20  Woe be to the nation that riseth up against my people: for the Lord almighty will take revenge on them, in the day of judgment he will visit them.

16:20  Tři měsíce pak lid oslavoval před jeruzalémskou svatyní a Judita s nimi.

16:20  Væ genti insurgenti super genus meum : Dominus enim omnipotens vindicabit in eis ; in die judicii visitabit illos.

16:21  For he will give fire, and worms into their flesh, that they may burn, and may feel for ever.

16:21  Potom se všichni rozešli domů. Také Judita se vrátila do Betulie, aby žila na svém statku. Po zbytek svého života byla slavná po celé zemi.

16:21  Dabit enim ignem et vermes in carnes eorum, ut urantur et sentiant usque in sempiternum.

16:22  And it came to pass after these things, that all the people, after the victory, came to Jerusalem to adore the Lord: and as soon as they were purified, they all offered holocausts, and vows, and their promises.

16:22  Mnozí po ní toužili, ale ona se neoddala žádnému muži ode dne, kdy zemřel její manžel Manases a byl připojen ke svému lidu, až do konce svého života.

16:22  Et factum est post hæc, omnis populus post victoriam venit in Jerusalem adorare Dominum : et mox ut purificati sunt, obtulerunt omnes holocausta, et vota, et repromissiones suas.

16:23  And Judith offered for an anathema of oblivion all the arms of Holofernes, which the people gave her, and the canopy that she had taken away out of his chamber.

16:23  Její pověst stále rostla. V domě svého muže se dožila stáří sto pěti let. Své služebné darovala svobodu, a když pak v Betulii zemřela, pochovali ji v hrobce jejího muže Manasese

16:23  Porro Judith universa vasa bellica Holofernis, quæ dedit illi populus, et conopeum quod ipsa sustulerat de cubili ipsius, obtulit in anathema oblivionis.

16:24  And the people were joyful in the sight of the sanctuary, and for three months the joy of this victory was celebrated with Judith.

16:24  a dům Izraele ji oplakával po sedm dní. Svůj majetek ještě před smrtí rozdělila mezi příbuzné svého muže Manasese a své vlastní příbuzné.

16:24  Erat autem populus jucundus secundum faciem sanctorum : et per tres menses gaudium hujus victoriæ celebratum est cum Judith.

16:25  And after those days every man returned to his house, and Judith was made great in Bethulia, and she was most renowned in all the land of Israel.

16:25  Za Juditiných dnů a ještě dlouho po její smrti už nikdo synům Izraele nenaháněl strach.

16:25  Post dies autem illos, unusquisque rediit in domum suam : et Judith magna facta est in Bethulia, et præclarior erat universæ terræ Israël.

16:26  And chastity was joined to her virtue, so that she knew no man all the days of her life, after the death of Manasses her husband.

16:26  Erat enim virtuti castitas adjuncta, ita ut non cognosceret virum omnibus diebus vitæ suæ, ex quo defunctus est Manasses vir ejus.

16:27  And on festival days she came forth with great glory.

16:27  Erat autem, diebus festis, procedens cum magna gloria.

16:28  And she abode in her husband's house a hundred and five years, and made her handmaid free, and she died, and was buried with her husband in Bethulia.

16:28  Mansit autem in domo viri sui annos centum quinque, et dimisit abram suam liberam : et defuncta est ac sepulta cum viro suo in Bethulia.

16:29  And all the people mourned for seven days.

16:29  Luxitque illam omnis populus diebus septem.

16:30  And all the time of her life there was none that troubled Israel, nor many years after her death.

16:30  In omni autem spatio vitæ ejus non fuit qui perturbaret Israël, et post mortem ejus annis multis.

16:31  But the day of the festivity of this victory is received by the Hebrews in the number of holy days, and is religiously observed by the Jews from that time until this day.

16:31  Dies autem victoriæ hujus festivitatis ab Hebræis in numero sanctorum dierum accipitur, et colitur a Judæis ex illo tempore usque in præsentem diem.
