Chapter 1
Prov Noyes 1:1  The proverbs of Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel:
Prov Noyes 1:2  That one may learn wisdom and instruction, And receive words of understanding;
Prov Noyes 1:3  That one may gain the instruction of prudence, Justice, equity, and uprightness;
Prov Noyes 1:4  Which will give caution to the simple, To the young man wisdom and discretion;
Prov Noyes 1:5  Let the wise man hear, and he will increase his knowledge, And the man of understanding will gain wise counsels;
Prov Noyes 1:6  So as to understand a proverb and a deep maxim, The words of the wise and their dark sayings.
Prov Noyes 1:7  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; Fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Prov Noyes 1:8  Hear, O my son! the instruction of thy father, And neglect not the teaching of thy mother!
Prov Noyes 1:9  For they shall be a graceful wreath for thy head, And a chain around thy neck.
Prov Noyes 1:10  My son, if sinners entice thee, Consent thou not!
Prov Noyes 1:11  If they say, "Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us lurk secretly for him who is innocent in vain;
Prov Noyes 1:12  Let us swallow them up alive, like the underworld, Yea, in full health, as those that go down into the pit;
Prov Noyes 1:13  We shall find all kinds of precious substance, We shall fill our houses with spoil;
Prov Noyes 1:14  Thou shalt cast thy lot among us; We will all have one purse;"—
Prov Noyes 1:15  My son, walk thou not in their way, Refrain thy foot from their path!
Prov Noyes 1:16  For their feet run to evil, And make haste to shed blood.
Prov Noyes 1:17  For as the net is spread in vain Before the eyes of any bird,
Prov Noyes 1:18  So they lie in wait for their own blood; They lurk secretly for their own lives.
Prov Noyes 1:19  Such are the ways of every one greedy of unjust gain; It taketh away the life of the possessor thereof.
Prov Noyes 1:20  Wisdom crieth out in the highway; In the market-place she uttereth her voice;
Prov Noyes 1:21  At the head of the noisy streets she crieth aloud; At the entrances of the gates, throughout the city, she proclaimeth her words [saying]:
Prov Noyes 1:22  How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? How long will scoffers delight themselves in scoffing, And fools hate knowledge?
Prov Noyes 1:23  Turn ye at my reproof! Behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make known my words to you!
Prov Noyes 1:24  "Because I have called, and ye have refused,—Because I have stretched out my hand, and no one hath regarded.
Prov Noyes 1:25  Because ye have rejected all my counsel, And have slighted my rebuke,—
Prov Noyes 1:26  I also will laugh at your calamity, I will mock when your fear cometh;
Prov Noyes 1:27  When your fear cometh upon you like a storm. And destruction overtaketh you like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you.
Prov Noyes 1:28  Then will they call upon me, but I will not answer! They will seek me early, But they shall not find me!
Prov Noyes 1:29  Because they have hated knowledge, And have not chosen the fear of the LORD,—
Prov Noyes 1:30  Because they would not attend to my counsel, And have despised all my reproof,—
Prov Noyes 1:31  Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, And be filled to the full with their own devices;
Prov Noyes 1:32  Yea, the turning away of the simple shall slay them, And the carelessness of fools shall destroy them.
Prov Noyes 1:33  But whoso hearkeneth to me shall dwell securely, And shall not be disquieted with the fear of evil."
Chapter 2
Prov Noyes 2:1  Oh, my son, that thou wouldst receive my words, And treasure up my precepts within thee;
Prov Noyes 2:2  That thou wouldst apply thine ear to wisdom, And incline thy heart to understanding!
Prov Noyes 2:3  For if thou wilt call aloud to knowledge, And lift up thy voice to understanding,—
Prov Noyes 2:4  If thou wilt seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures,
Prov Noyes 2:5  Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God.
Prov Noyes 2:6  For the LORD giveth wisdom; From his mouth proceed knowledge and understanding:
Prov Noyes 2:7  He layeth up safety for the righteous; He is a shield to them that walk uprightly:
Prov Noyes 2:8  He guardeth the paths of equity, And defendeth the way of his servants.
Prov Noyes 2:9  Then shalt thou understand righteousness and equity And uprightness, yea, every good path.
Prov Noyes 2:10  When wisdom entereth into thy heart, And knowledge is pleasant to thy soul,
Prov Noyes 2:11  Discretion will guard thee, Understanding will preserve thee.
Prov Noyes 2:12  It will deliver thee from the way of the wicked, From the men who speak perverse things;
Prov Noyes 2:13  Who forsake the paths of uprightness, To walk in the ways of darkness;
Prov Noyes 2:14  Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perverseness of the wicked;
Prov Noyes 2:15  Whose paths are crooked, And who are froward in their ways.
Prov Noyes 2:16  It will deliver thee from the wife of another, From the stranger, who useth smooth words;
Prov Noyes 2:17  Who forsaketh the friend of her youth, And forgetteth the covenant of her God.
Prov Noyes 2:18  For her house sinketh down to Death, And her paths to the shades of the dead:
Prov Noyes 2:19  None that go to her return again; They will not attain the paths of life.
Prov Noyes 2:20  Therefore walk thou in the way of good men, And keep the paths of the righteous:
Prov Noyes 2:21  For the upright shall dwell in the land, And the righteous shall remain in it;
Prov Noyes 2:22  But the wicked shall be cut off from the land, And transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
Chapter 3
Prov Noyes 3:1  My son, forget not my teaching, And let thy heart observe my precepts!
Prov Noyes 3:2  For length of days, and years of life, And peace shall they multiply to thee.
Prov Noyes 3:3  Let not kindness and truth forsake thee; Bind them around thy neck, Write them upon the tablet of thy heart:
Prov Noyes 3:4  Then shalt thou find favor and good success In the sight of God and man.
Prov Noyes 3:5  Trust in the LORD with all thy heart, And lean not on thine own understanding;
Prov Noyes 3:6  In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he will make thy paths plain.
Prov Noyes 3:7  Be not wise in thine own eyes; Fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
Prov Noyes 3:8  It shall be health to thy muscles, And moisture to thy bones.
Prov Noyes 3:9  Honor the LORD with thy substance, And with the first-fruits of all thy increase;
Prov Noyes 3:10  So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, And thy vats overflow with new wine.
Prov Noyes 3:11  My son, despise not the correction of the LORD, Nor be impatient under his chastisement!
Prov Noyes 3:12  For whom the LORD loveth he chasteneth, Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Prov Noyes 3:13  Happy the man who findeth wisdom; Yea, the man who getteth understanding!
Prov Noyes 3:14  For the profit thereof is greater than that of silver, And the gain thereof than that of fine gold.
Prov Noyes 3:15  More precious is she than pearls, And none of thy jewels is to be compared with her.
Prov Noyes 3:16  Length of days is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.
Prov Noyes 3:17  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.
Prov Noyes 3:18  She is a tree of life to them that lay hold of her, And happy is every one who hath her in his grasp.
Prov Noyes 3:19  The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding he framed the heavens.
Prov Noyes 3:20  By his knowledge the deep waters were cleft, And the clouds drop down the dew.
Prov Noyes 3:21  My son, let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep sound wisdom and discretion!
Prov Noyes 3:22  For they shall be life to thy soul, And grace to thy neck.
Prov Noyes 3:23  Then shalt thou go on thy way securely, And thy foot shall not stumble;
Prov Noyes 3:24  When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid, Yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
Prov Noyes 3:25  Be not thou afraid of sudden alarm, Nor of the storm that is for the wicked, when it cometh;
Prov Noyes 3:26  For the LORD shall be thy confidence; Yea, he will keep thy foot from being taken.
Prov Noyes 3:27  Withhold not kindness from those who need it, When it is in the power of thy hand to do it.
Prov Noyes 3:28  Say not to thy neighbor, "Go, and come again, And to-morrow I will give to thee," when thou hast it by thee.
Prov Noyes 3:29  Devise not evil against thy neighbor, While he dwelleth securely by thee.
Prov Noyes 3:30  Contend not with a man without cause, When he hath done thee no harm.
Prov Noyes 3:31  Envy not the oppressor, And choose none of his ways.
Prov Noyes 3:32  For the perverse man is the abomination of the LORD, But he is in friendship with the upright.
Prov Noyes 3:33  The curse of the LORD is upon the house of the wicked, But he blesseth the dwelling of the righteous.
Prov Noyes 3:34  Surely the scorners he treadeth scornfully, But giveth favor to the lowly.
Prov Noyes 3:35  The wise shall obtain honor, But fools shall bear off shame.
Chapter 4
Prov Noyes 4:1  Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, And attend, that ye may learn understanding!
Prov Noyes 4:2  For I give you good instruction; Forsake ye not my commandments.
Prov Noyes 4:3  For I was my father’s son, A tender and only child in the sight of my mother.
Prov Noyes 4:4  He taught me, and said to me, Let thy heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments, and live.
Prov Noyes 4:5  Get wisdom, get understanding; Forget not, and depart not from, the words of my mouth.
Prov Noyes 4:6  Forsake her not, and she will guard thee: Love her, and she will preserve thee.
Prov Noyes 4:7  Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore gain wisdom, And with all thy gain, gain understanding.
Prov Noyes 4:8  Exalt her, and she will promote thee; She will bring thee to honor, when thou dost embrace her;
Prov Noyes 4:9  She will give to thy head a graceful wreath, A beautiful crown will she bestow upon thee.
Prov Noyes 4:10  Hear, O my son! and receive my sayings! So shall the years of thy life be many.
Prov Noyes 4:11  I have taught thee the way of wisdom, I have guided thee in the right path.
Prov Noyes 4:12  When thou goest, thy steps shall not be confined; And, when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
Prov Noyes 4:13  Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go; Keep her, for she is thy life.
Prov Noyes 4:14  Enter not into the path of the wicked, And go not in the way of evil men;
Prov Noyes 4:15  Avoid it, pass not upon it, Turn from it, and go away.
Prov Noyes 4:16  For they sleep not, unless they have done mischief; Yea, their sleep is taken away, unless they have caused some to fall.
Prov Noyes 4:17  For they eat the bread of wickedness, And drink the wine of violence.
Prov Noyes 4:18  But the path of the righteous is as the light of dawn, Which groweth brighter and brighter unto the perfect day.
Prov Noyes 4:19  The way of the wicked is as thick darkness; They know not at what they stumble.
Prov Noyes 4:20  My son, attend to my words; Incline thine ear to my sayings;
Prov Noyes 4:21  Let them not depart from thine eyes; Keep them in the midst of thy heart!
Prov Noyes 4:22  For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.
Prov Noyes 4:23  More than any thing which thou watchest, watch thy heart; For from it goeth forth life.
Prov Noyes 4:24  Put away from thee a deceitful mouth, And remove far from thee perverse lips.
Prov Noyes 4:25  Let thine eyes look straight forward, And thine eyelids be directed before thee.
Prov Noyes 4:26  Give heed to the path of thy foot, And let all thy ways be steadfast.
Prov Noyes 4:27  Turn not to the right hand or to the left; Remove thy foot from evil.
Chapter 5
Prov Noyes 5:1  My son, attend to my wisdom. And bow thine ear to my understanding;
Prov Noyes 5:2  That thou mayest keep discretion, And that thy lips may preserve knowledge!
Prov Noyes 5:3  Truly, the lips of a strange woman drop honey, And her mouth is smoother than oil;
Prov Noyes 5:4  But her end is bitter as wormwood, Sharp as a two-edged sword.
Prov Noyes 5:5  Her feet go down to death; Her steps lay hold of the under-world.
Prov Noyes 5:6  That she may not ponder the way of life, Her paths waver when she heedeth it not.
Prov Noyes 5:7  Hear me now, therefore, O children! And turn not away from the words of my mouth!
Prov Noyes 5:8  Remove thy way far from her. And come not nigh the door of her house:
Prov Noyes 5:9  Lest thou give thy bloom to others, And thy years to a cruel one;
Prov Noyes 5:10  Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, And thine earnings be in the house of an alien;
Prov Noyes 5:11  And lest thou mourn in thy latter end. When thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
Prov Noyes 5:12  And say, "How have I hated instruction! And how hath my heart despised reproof!
Prov Noyes 5:13  I have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, Nor inclined mine ear to my instructors;
Prov Noyes 5:14  I have well-nigh fallen into utter misery; In the midst of the congregation and the assembly."
Prov Noyes 5:15  Drink water out of thine own cistern. And running water out of thine own well:
Prov Noyes 5:16  So shall thy fountains overflow in the streets, In the wide streets, as streams of water;
Prov Noyes 5:17  They shall belong to thee alone, And not to strangers with thee;
Prov Noyes 5:18  And thy fountain shall be blessed, Yea, thou shalt have joy in the wife of thy youth.
Prov Noyes 5:19  A lovely hind, a graceful doe, Her breasts shall satisfy thee at all times, And thou shalt be always ravished with her love.
Prov Noyes 5:20  Why, then, my son, wilt thou be ravished with a wanton, And embrace the bosom of a stranger?
Prov Noyes 5:21  For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, And he weigheth well all his paths.
Prov Noyes 5:22  His own iniquities shall ensnare the wicked; Yea, he shall be held fast by the cords of his own sins.
Prov Noyes 5:23  He shall die for want of instruction; Yea, through the greatness of his folly he shall stagger.
Chapter 6
Prov Noyes 6:1  My son, if thou hast become surety for another, If thou hast stricken hands for another,
Prov Noyes 6:2  If thou hast become ensnared by the words of thy mouth, If thou hast been caught by the words of thy mouth,
Prov Noyes 6:3  Do this now, my son, and rescue thyself,—Since thou hast fallen into the hands of thy neighbor,—Go, prostrate thyself, and be urgent with thy neighbor!
Prov Noyes 6:4  Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids;
Prov Noyes 6:5  Rescue thyself, as a roe from the hand, And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
Prov Noyes 6:6  Go to the ant, O sluggard! Consider her ways, and be wise!
Prov Noyes 6:7  She hath no governor, Nor overseer, nor ruler;
Prov Noyes 6:8  Yet she prepareth in the summer her food, She gathereth in the harvest her meat.
Prov Noyes 6:9  How long wilt thou lie in bed, O sluggard? When wilt thou arise from thy sleep?
Prov Noyes 6:10  "A little sleep,—a little slumber,—A little folding of the hands to rest:"
Prov Noyes 6:11  So shall thy poverty come upon thee like a robber, Yea, thy want, as an armed man!
Prov Noyes 6:12  A worthless wretch is the unrighteous man, Who walketh with a deceitful mouth;
Prov Noyes 6:13  Who winketh with his eyes, Speaketh with his feet, And teacheth with his fingers.
Prov Noyes 6:14  Fraud is in his heart; He deviseth mischief continually; He scattereth contentions.
Prov Noyes 6:15  Therefore shall calamity come upon him suddenly; In a moment shall he be destroyed, and that without remedy;
Prov Noyes 6:16  These six things doth the LORD hate; Yea, seven are an abomination to him:
Prov Noyes 6:17  Lofty eyes, a false tongue, And hands which shed innocent blood;
Prov Noyes 6:18  A heart that contriveth wicked devices; Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
Prov Noyes 6:19  A false witness, that uttereth lies, And him that soweth discord among brethren.
Prov Noyes 6:20  Keep, O my son! the commandment of thy father, And forsake not the precepts of thy mother!
Prov Noyes 6:21  Bind them continually to thy heart, Tie them around thy neck!
Prov Noyes 6:22  When thou goest forth, they shall guide thee; When thou sleepest, they shall watch over thee; And, when thou awakest, they shall talk with thee.
Prov Noyes 6:23  For the commandment is a lamp, and instruction a light; Yea, the rebukes of correction lead to life.
Prov Noyes 6:24  They shall guard thee from the evil woman, From the smooth tongue of the unchaste woman.
Prov Noyes 6:25  Desire not her beauty in thy heart, Nor let her catch thee with her eyelids;
Prov Noyes 6:26  For by a harlot a man is brought to a morsel of bread, And the adulteress layeth snares for the precious life.
Prov Noyes 6:27  Can a man take fire into his bosom, And his clothes not be burned?
Prov Noyes 6:28  Can one walk upon burning coals, And his feet not be scorched?
Prov Noyes 6:29  So is it with him who goeth in to his neighbor’s wife; Whoever toucheth her shall not go unpunished.
Prov Noyes 6:30  Men do not overlook a thief, Though he steal to satisfy his appetite, when he is hungry;
Prov Noyes 6:31  If found, he must repay sevenfold, And give up all the substance of his house.
Prov Noyes 6:32  Whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding; He that doeth it destroyeth himself;
Prov Noyes 6:33  Blows and dishonor shall he get, And his reproach shall not be wiped away.
Prov Noyes 6:34  For jealousy is the fury of a man; He will not spare in the day of vengeance;
Prov Noyes 6:35  And he will not pay regard to any ransom, Nor be content, though thou offer many gifts.
Chapter 7
Prov Noyes 7:1  My son, keep my words, And treasure up my commandments with thee!
Prov Noyes 7:2  Keep my commandments and live! Yea, my teaching, as the apple of thine eye!
Prov Noyes 7:3  Bind them upon thy fingers, Write them upon the tablet of thy heart!
Prov Noyes 7:4  Say unto wisdom, "Thou art my sister!" And call understanding thy near acquaintance;
Prov Noyes 7:5  That they may keep thee from the wife of another, From the stranger, that useth smooth words.
Prov Noyes 7:6  For through the window of my house, Through the lattice I was looking forth,
Prov Noyes 7:7  And I saw among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, A young man void of understanding.
Prov Noyes 7:8  He was passing through the street near her corner, And was going the way to her house,
Prov Noyes 7:9  At twilight, in the evening, At midnight, yea, in the thick darkness.
Prov Noyes 7:10  And, behold, a woman met him, In the attire of a harlot, and subtle of heart,—
Prov Noyes 7:11  One noisy and unruly, Whose feet abide not in her house;
Prov Noyes 7:12  Who is now in the streets, now in the broad places, And lurketh near every corner.
Prov Noyes 7:13  She caught hold of him and kissed him, And with a shameless face said to him,
Prov Noyes 7:14  "Thank-offerings have been upon me, And this day have I performed my vows;
Prov Noyes 7:15  Therefore came I forth to meet thee,—Diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee!
Prov Noyes 7:16  I have spread my bed with coverlets, With tapestry of the thread of Egypt.
Prov Noyes 7:17  I have sprinkled my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
Prov Noyes 7:18  Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning; Let us solace ourselves with caresses.
Prov Noyes 7:19  For the good-man is not at home; He is gone a long journey;
Prov Noyes 7:20  He hath taken a purse of money with him; At the day of the full moon he will return."
Prov Noyes 7:21  By her much fair speech she seduced him; By the smoothness of her lips she drew him away.
Prov Noyes 7:22  He goeth after her straightway, As an ox goeth to the slaughter, Or as one in fetters to the chastisement of the fool,
Prov Noyes 7:23  Till an arrow strike through his liver; —As a bird hasteneth into the snare, And knoweth not that it is laid for its life.
Prov Noyes 7:24  Now, therefore, ye children, hearken to me, And attend to the words of my mouth!
Prov Noyes 7:25  Let not thy heart turn aside to her ways; Go not astray in her paths!
Prov Noyes 7:26  For many are the wounded which she hath cast down; Yea, countless is the number of those slain by her.
Prov Noyes 7:27  Her house is the way to the under-world, Leading down to the chambers of death.
Chapter 8
Prov Noyes 8:1  Doth not wisdom cry aloud, And understanding put forth her voice?
Prov Noyes 8:2  Upon the top of the high places, By the wayside, In the cross-ways, She taketh her station.
Prov Noyes 8:3  By the side of the gates, In the entrance of the city, In the approaches to the doors, she crieth aloud.
Prov Noyes 8:4  "To you, O men! do I call, And my voice is to the sons of men!
Prov Noyes 8:5  O ye simple ones! learn wisdom, And ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart!
Prov Noyes 8:6  Hear, for I speak excellent things, And my lips utter that which is right.
Prov Noyes 8:7  For my mouth speaketh truth, And wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
Prov Noyes 8:8  All the words of my mouth are in uprightness; There is nothing crooked or deceitful in them;
Prov Noyes 8:9  They are all plain to the man of understanding, And right to those who find knowledge.
Prov Noyes 8:10  Receive my instruction, and not silver. And knowledge rather than choice gold!
Prov Noyes 8:11  For wisdom is better than pearls, And no precious things are to be compared with her.
Prov Noyes 8:12  "I, wisdom, dwell with prudence, And find out the knowledge of sagacious counsels.
Prov Noyes 8:13  The fear of the LORD is to hate evil; Pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, And the deceitful mouth, do I hate.
Prov Noyes 8:14  Counsel is mine, and sound reason; I am understanding; I have strength.
Prov Noyes 8:16  By me princes rule, And nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
Prov Noyes 8:17  I love them that love me, And they who seek me early shall find me.
Prov Noyes 8:18  Riches and honor are with me; Yea, durable riches and prosperity.
Prov Noyes 8:19  My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold. And my revenue than choice silver.
Prov Noyes 8:20  I walk in the way of righteousness, In the midst of the paths of equity.
Prov Noyes 8:21  I cause those who love me to possess substance; Yea, I fill their treasuries.
Prov Noyes 8:22  "The LORD created me, the firstling of his course, Before his works, of old;
Prov Noyes 8:23  I was anointed from everlasting, From the beginning, even before the earth was made.
Prov Noyes 8:24  When as yet there were no deeps, I was brought forth. When there were no springs, abounding with water.
Prov Noyes 8:25  Before the mountains were settled, Yea, before the hills, I was brought forth;
Prov Noyes 8:26  Ere yet he had made the land and the wastes, And the first of the clods of the earth.
Prov Noyes 8:27  When he framed the heavens, I was there; When he drew a circle upon the face of the deep;
Prov Noyes 8:28  When he made firm the sky above, And the fountains of the deep rushed forth;
Prov Noyes 8:29  When he gave to the sea its bounds, that the waters should not pass their border; When he marked out the foundations of the earth,—
Prov Noyes 8:30  Then was I by him as a master-builder; I was his delight day by day, Exulting before him at all times;
Prov Noyes 8:31  Exulting in the habitable part of his earth, And my delight was with the sons of men.
Prov Noyes 8:32  "Now, therefore, ye children, hearken to me! For happy are they who keep my ways!
Prov Noyes 8:33  Hear instruction, and be wise! Yea, reject it not!
Prov Noyes 8:34  Happy the man who hearkeneth to me, Who watcheth day by day at my gates, Who waiteth at the posts of my doors;
Prov Noyes 8:35  For he that findeth me findeth life, And obtaineth favor from the LORD;
Prov Noyes 8:36  But he who misseth me doeth violence to himself; All they who hate me love death."
Chapter 9
Prov Noyes 9:1  Wisdom hath builded her house; She hath hewn out her seven pillars.
Prov Noyes 9:2  She hath killed her fatlings; She hath mingled her wine; Yea, she hath furnished her table.
Prov Noyes 9:3  She hath sent forth her maidens; She crieth aloud upon the highest places of the city:
Prov Noyes 9:4  "Whoever is simple, let him turn in hither!" To him that is void of understanding she saith,
Prov Noyes 9:5  "Come, eat of my bread, And drink of the wine which I have mingled!
Prov Noyes 9:6  Forsake folly, and live! And go forward in the way of understanding!
Prov Noyes 9:7  "He who correcteth a scoffer Bringeth shame upon himself; And he who rebuketh the wicked Bringeth upon himself a stain.
Prov Noyes 9:8  Rebuke not a scoffer, lest he hate thee; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Prov Noyes 9:9  Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser; Teach a righteous man, and he will increase his learning.
Prov Noyes 9:10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Most Holy is understanding.
Prov Noyes 9:11  Yea, through me thy days shall be multiplied, And the years of thy life shall be increased.
Prov Noyes 9:12  If thou art wise, thou art wise for thyself; And if thou art a scoffer, thou alone must bear it."
Prov Noyes 9:13  The foolish woman is clamorous; She is very simple, and careth for nothing.
Prov Noyes 9:14  She sitteth at the door of her house, Upon a seat in the high places of the city,
Prov Noyes 9:15  To call aloud to those that pass by, Who go straight forward in their ways,
Prov Noyes 9:16  "Whoever is simple, let him turn in hither!" And to him that is void of understanding she saith,
Prov Noyes 9:17  "Stolen water is sweet, And bread eaten in secret is pleasant."
Prov Noyes 9:18  But he considereth not that the dead are there, That in the vales of the under-world are her guests.
Chapter 10
Prov Noyes 10:1  The Proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.
Prov Noyes 10:2  Treasures of wickedness do not profit; But righteousness delivereth from death.
Prov Noyes 10:3  The LORD will not suffer the righteous to famish; But he disappointeth the craving of the wicked.
Prov Noyes 10:4  He that worketh with a slack hand becometh poor; But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.
Prov Noyes 10:5  He that gathereth in summer is a wise son; But he that sleepeth in harvest is a son causing shame.
Prov Noyes 10:6  Blessings are upon the head of the just; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
Prov Noyes 10:7  The memory of the righteous man shall be blessed; But the name of the wicked shall rot.
Prov Noyes 10:8  He who is wise in heart receiveth precepts; But the foolish talker falleth headlong.
Prov Noyes 10:9  He that walketh uprightly walketh securely; But he that perverteth his ways shall be punished.
Prov Noyes 10:10  He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow; And a foolish talker falleth headlong.
Prov Noyes 10:11  The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life; But the mouth of the wicked concealeth violence.
Prov Noyes 10:12  Hatred stirreth up strife; But love covereth all offences.
Prov Noyes 10:13  Upon the lips of a man of understanding wisdom is found; But a rod is for the back of him that lacketh understanding.
Prov Noyes 10:14  Wise men treasure up knowledge; But the mouth of the foolish is destruction close at hand.
Prov Noyes 10:15  The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; The destruction of the poor is their poverty.
Prov Noyes 10:16  The earnings of the righteous minister to life; The revenues of the wicked, to sin.
Prov Noyes 10:17  He that keepeth instruction is in the path of life; But he that refuseth reproof goeth astray.
Prov Noyes 10:18  He that hideth hatred hath lying lips; And he that uttereth slander is a fool.
Prov Noyes 10:19  In the multitude of words there wanteth not offence; But he who restraineth his lips is wise.

Prov Noyes 27:20  The realms of the dead are never full; So the eyes of man are never satisfied.
Prov Noyes 27:21  The refining-pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; So let a man be to the mouth that giveth him praise.
Prov Noyes 27:22  Though thou shouldst beat a fool in a mortar, Among bruised wheat, with a pestle, Yet will not his folly depart from him.
Prov Noyes 27:23  Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, And look well to thy herds!
Prov Noyes 27:24  For riches last not for ever; Not even a crown endureth from generation to generation.
Prov Noyes 27:25  The hay disappeareth, and the tender grass showeth itself, And the herbage of the mountains is gathered in.
Prov Noyes 27:26  The lambs are thy clothing, And the goats the price of thy field.
Prov Noyes 27:27  There is goat’s milk enough for thy food, For the food of thy household, And for the sustenance of thy maidens.
Chapter 28
Prov Noyes 28:1  The wicked flee when no one pursueth; But the righteous is as bold as a lion.
Prov Noyes 28:2  Through the transgression of a land many are its rulers; But through men of prudence and understanding the prince shall live long.
Prov Noyes 28:3  A poor man who oppresseth the needy Is a sweeping rain which leaveth no food.
Prov Noyes 28:4  They who forsake the law praise the wicked; But they who keep the law contend with them.
Prov Noyes 28:5  Wicked men understand not equity; But they who seek the LORD understand all things.
Prov Noyes 28:6  Better is a poor man who walketh in uprightness, Than he who is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
Prov Noyes 28:7  He that keepeth the law is a wise son; But he that is the companion of prodigals bringeth shame on his father.
Prov Noyes 28:8  He that increaseth his substance by usurious gain Gathereth it for him who will pity the poor.
Prov Noyes 28:9  He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer shall be an abomination.
Prov Noyes 28:10  He that causeth the righteous to go astray in an evil way Shall himself fall into his own pit; But the upright shall have good things in possession.
Prov Noyes 28:11  The rich man is wise in his own conceit; But the poor man, who hath understanding, will search him through.
Prov Noyes 28:12  When the righteous rejoice, there is great glorying; But, when the wicked are exalted, men hide themselves.
Prov Noyes 28:13  He that covereth his sins shall not prosper; But he that confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.
Prov Noyes 28:14  Happy the man who feareth always! But he who hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.
Prov Noyes 28:15  As a roaring lion and a hungry bear, So is a wicked ruler over a needy people.
Prov Noyes 28:16  The prince who is weak in understanding is great in oppression; But he who hateth unjust gain shall prolong his days.
Prov Noyes 28:17  A man who is burdened with life-blood—Let him flee to the pit! let no man stay him!
Prov Noyes 28:18  He who walketh uprightly shall be safe; But he who is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.
Prov Noyes 28:19  He who tilleth his land shall have bread enough; And he that followeth after worthless persons shall have poverty enough.
Prov Noyes 28:20  A faithful man shall abound with blessings; But he that maketh haste to be rich shall not go unpunished.
Prov Noyes 28:21  To have respect to persons is not good; Since for a piece of bread that man will transgress.
Prov Noyes 28:22  He who hath an evil eye hasteth after wealth, And considereth not that poverty will come upon him.
Prov Noyes 28:23  He who rebuketh a man shall afterwards find favor More than he who flattereth with his tongue.
Prov Noyes 28:24  Whoso stealeth from his father or his mother, And saith, "It is no transgression," The same is the companion of a robber.
Prov Noyes 28:25  He who is of a proud heart stirreth up strife; But he that trusteth in the LORD shall be rich.
Prov Noyes 28:26  He who trusteth in his own understanding is a fool; But he who walketh wisely shall be delivered.
Prov Noyes 28:27  He who giveth to the poor shall not want; But he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
Prov Noyes 28:28  When the wicked are exalted, men hide themselves; But, when they perish, the righteous increase.
Chapter 29
Prov Noyes 29:1  He who, being often reproved, hardeneth his neck, Shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.
Prov Noyes 29:2  When the righteous are powerful, the people rejoice; But when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.
Prov Noyes 29:3  He who loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father; But he who is a companion of harlots destroyeth his substance.
Prov Noyes 29:4  A king by equity establisheth a land; But he who receiveth gifts overthroweth it.
Prov Noyes 29:5  A man who flattereth his neighbor Spreadeth a net for his feet.
Prov Noyes 29:6  In the transgression of a wicked man there is a snare; But the righteous shall sing and rejoice.
Prov Noyes 29:7  A righteous man careth for the cause of the poor; A wicked man discerneth not knowledge.
Prov Noyes 29:8  Scoffers kindle a city into a flame; But wise men pacify wrath.
Prov Noyes 29:9  If a wise man contend in a cause with a fool, Whether he rage or laugh, there will be no rest.
Prov Noyes 29:10  The bloodthirsty man hateth the upright; But the righteous seek to preserve his life.
Prov Noyes 29:11  A fool letteth all his anger come out; But a wise man keepeth it back.
Prov Noyes 29:12  If a ruler listen to words of falsehood, All his servants become wicked.
Prov Noyes 29:13  The poor man and the oppressor meet together: The LORD giveth light to the eyes of them both.
Prov Noyes 29:14  The king that judgeth the poor with uprightness, His throne shall be established for ever.
Prov Noyes 29:15  The rod and reproof give wisdom; But a child left to himself bringeth shame to his mother.
Prov Noyes 29:16  When the wicked are powerful, transgression increaseth; But the righteous shall see their fall.
Prov Noyes 29:17  Chastise thy son, and he will give thee rest; Yea, he will give delight to thy soul.
Prov Noyes 29:18  Where there is no vision, the people become unruly; But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
Prov Noyes 29:19  A servant will not be corrected by words; For, though he understand, he will not obey.
Prov Noyes 29:20  Seest thou a man hasty in his words? There is more hope of a fool than of him.
Prov Noyes 29:21  He that bringeth up his servant delicately from childhood Shall have him become a son at the last.
Prov Noyes 29:22  An angry man stirreth up strife, And a passionate man aboundeth in transgression.
Prov Noyes 29:23  A man’s pride will bring him low; But he that is of a humble spirit shall obtain honor.
Prov Noyes 29:24  He who shareth with a thief hateth himself: He heareth the curse, but maketh no discovery.
Prov Noyes 29:25  The fear of man bringeth a snare; But whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.
Prov Noyes 29:26  Many are they who seek the ruler’s favor; But every man’s judgment cometh from the LORD.
Prov Noyes 29:27  As the unjust man is an abomination to the righteous, So the upright in his way is an abomination to the wicked.
Chapter 30
Prov Noyes 30:1  The words of Agur, the son of Jakeh, even his prophecy; the inspired utterance of the man to Ithiel, even to Ithiel and Ucal.
Prov Noyes 30:2  Truly I am more stupid than any man; There is not in me the understanding of a man.
Prov Noyes 30:3  I have not learned wisdom, Nor have I gained the knowledge of the Most Holy.
Prov Noyes 30:4  Who hath gone up into heaven and come down? Who hath gathered the wind in his fists? Who hath bound up the waters in a garment? Who hath established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what his son’s name, if thou knowest?
Prov Noyes 30:5  Every word of God is pure; A shield is he to them that put their trust in him.
Prov Noyes 30:6  Add not to his words, Lest he rebuke thee, and thou be found a liar.
Prov Noyes 30:7  Two things do I ask of thee; Withhold them not from me, before I die!
Prov Noyes 30:8  Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food which is needful for me;
Prov Noyes 30:9  Lest I be full, and deny thee, And say, "Who is the LORD?" Or lest I be poor, and steal, And violate the name of my God.
Prov Noyes 30:10  Talk not against a servant to his master, Lest he curse thee, and thou suffer for it.
Prov Noyes 30:11  There is a class of men that curse their fathers, And do not bless their mothers.
Prov Noyes 30:12  There is a class who are pure in their own eyes, And yet are not washed from their filthiness.
Prov Noyes 30:13  There is a class,—O how lofty are their eyes, And how are their eyelids lifted up!
Prov Noyes 30:14  There is a class, whose teeth are swords, And their jaw-teeth knives, To devour the poor from off the earth, And the needy from among men.
Prov Noyes 30:15  The vampire hath two daughters; "Give! give!" [is their cry.] There are three things which are never satisfied; Yea, four which say not, "Enough!"
Prov Noyes 30:16  The underworld, and the barren womb; The earth, which is not satiated with water, And fire, which never saith, "It is enough!"
Prov Noyes 30:17  The eye that mocketh at a father, And scorneth to obey a mother, The ravens of the valley shall pick it out, And the young eagles shall eat it.
Prov Noyes 30:18  These three things are too wonderful for me; Yea, there are four which I understand not:
Prov Noyes 30:19  The track of an eagle in the air, The track of a serpent upon a rock, The track of a ship in the midst of the sea, And the track of a man with a maid.
Prov Noyes 30:20  Such is the way of an adulterous woman; She eateth, and wipeth her mouth, And saith, "I have done nothing wrong."
Prov Noyes 30:21  Under three things is the earth disquieted; Yea, under four it cannot bear up:
Prov Noyes 30:22  Under a servant when he becometh a king, And a fool when he is filled with bread;
Prov Noyes 30:23  Under an odious woman when she becometh a wife, And a handmaid when she becometh heir to her mistress.
Prov Noyes 30:24  There are four things which are small upon the earth, Yet are they wise, instructed in wisdom.
Prov Noyes 30:25  The ants are a people not strong, Yet they prepare in the summer their food.
Prov Noyes 30:26  The conies are a feeble people, Yet do they make their houses in the rocks.
Prov Noyes 30:27  The locusts have no king, Yet do they all go forth in bands.
Prov Noyes 30:28  The lizard seizeth with its hands, And is in king’s palaces.
Prov Noyes 30:29  These three have a graceful step; Yea, four are graceful in their walk:
Prov Noyes 30:30  The lion, the hero among beasts, Which turneth not back for any;
Prov Noyes 30:31  The loin-girded war-horse, the he-goat, And a king who cannot be withstood.
Prov Noyes 30:32  If thou hast been foolish in lifting thyself up, And hast meditated evil, Put thy hand on thy mouth!
Prov Noyes 30:33  For, as the pressing of milk bringeth forth cheese, And as the pressing of the nose bringeth forth blood, So the pressing of anger bringeth forth strife.
Chapter 31
Prov Noyes 31:1  The words given to King Lemuel; the prophecy which his mother taught him.
Prov Noyes 31:2  What, O my son! and what, O son of my womb! Yea, what, O son of my vows! [shall I say to thee?]
Prov Noyes 31:3  Give not thy strength to women, Nor thy ways to that which destroyeth kings!
Prov Noyes 31:4  It is not for kings, O Lemuel! It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes to desire strong drink;
Prov Noyes 31:5  Lest they drink, and forget the law, And pervert the rights of any of the afflicted.
Prov Noyes 31:6  Give strong drink to him who is ready to perish, And wine to him that hath a heavy heart;
Prov Noyes 31:7  Let him drink and forget his poverty, And remember his misery no more!
Prov Noyes 31:8  Open thy mouth for the dumb, In the cause of every orphan!
Prov Noyes 31:9  Open thy mouth, judge righteously, And maintain the cause of the poor and needy!
Prov Noyes 31:10  Who can find a capable woman? Her worth is far above pearls.
Prov Noyes 31:11  The heart of her husband trusteth in her, And he is in no want of gain.
Prov Noyes 31:12  She doeth him good, and not evil, All the days of her life.
Prov Noyes 31:13  She seeketh wool and flax, And worketh willingly with her hands.
Prov Noyes 31:14  She is like the merchants’ ships; She bringeth her food from afar.
Prov Noyes 31:15  She riseth while it is yet night, And giveth food to her family, And a task to her maidens.
Prov Noyes 31:16  She layeth a plan for a field, and buyeth it; With the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard.
Prov Noyes 31:17  She girdeth her loins with strength, And maketh strong her arms.
Prov Noyes 31:18  She perceiveth how pleasant is her gain, And her lamp is not extinguished in the night.
Prov Noyes 31:19  She putteth forth her hands to the distaff, And her hands take hold of the spindle.
Prov Noyes 31:20  She spreadeth out her hand to the poor, Yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy.
Prov Noyes 31:21  She hath no fear for her household on account of the snow, For all her household are clothed with crimson.
Prov Noyes 31:22  She maketh for herself coverlets; Her clothing is of fine linen and purple.
Prov Noyes 31:23  Her husband is known in the gates, When he sitteth with the elders of the land.
Prov Noyes 31:24  She maketh linen garments and selleth them, And delivereth girdles to the merchant.
Prov Noyes 31:25  Strength and honor are her clothing; And she laugheth at the days to come.
Prov Noyes 31:26  She openeth her mouth with wisdom, And kind instruction is upon her tongue.
Prov Noyes 31:27  She looketh well to the ways of her household, And eateth not the bread of idleness.
Prov Noyes 31:28  Her children rise up, and extol her; Her husband, and praiseth her, [saving,]
Prov Noyes 31:29  "Many daughters have done, virtuously, But thou excellest them all."
Prov Noyes 31:30  Grace is deceitful, and beauty vain; But the woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.
Prov Noyes 31:31  Give ye her of the fruit of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
